It has come to my attention that I made an error: Basic Carpentry practice will not raise your fabrication above 2. If you are at 2 and need to get to 3 in the version of the game linked in the description, you should be able to craft a "distaff and spindle" two or three times to get the final rank. As of November 21, 2022, you no longer need 1 rank of throwing to perform the throwing practice action. You can skip the step at 2:54 and go directly to 4:05.
Pockets are still somewhat new and there isn't a good guide for setting them up for organization yet, so allow me to share my biggest tip learned through hundreds of hours of gameplay: Set the pockets on your backpack to priority 5 and don't put a whitelist or blacklist on it. Pockets default to priority 0 and the game tries to fill high priority pockets first, so if you pick up a pebble the game will default to your backpack. Once your backpack is full items will start going into pockets, so they act as extra storage when needed. Want to store ammo outside the backpack so you have it even when you drop your backpack? Set an ammo pouch to priority 10 and whitelist the ammo. With whitelists only the items on the whitelist are allowed in the pocket, and combined with a higher priority than the backpack (10 vs 5) the game will automatically see that ammo pouch as the best place to put your ammo.
In the latest experimental, the throwing practice recipe is available at throwing zero. As you showed, there is no point in gatekeeping that behind throwing 1.
Tips for new players: 1. If you find a small boulder, wield a rock using the 'w' key (then use arrow keys to select the rock and press the 'Enter/Return' key), and then smash 's' key followed by direction of the boulder. Eventually the boulder will break and drop a lot of rocks. 2. You can batch make items by going into the crafting menu, selecting the craft you want to make, and pressing the 'b' key. Then you can choose how many times you want to make that craft. Also, in the main game window, one can repeat their last craft by pressing the '-' (dash/hyphen/minus) key.

These are very high quality tutorials, please don't stop making these. I'm a long term player, and learned something here! Yeah a sling sounds like a tool that deserves dedicated training, due to its quirk in throwing. The same should apply to a typical bow. A simple throwing skill I suppose is just general aim, but doesn't account for the quirks of the various individual weapons.
I highly recommend going into Settings->Interface->Aim window display style (line 43) and changing it from "Bars" to "Numbers". That shows you the actual percentage chance to get various kinds of hit or miss instead of having to interpret the weird bars.
@@mutantwormgirl nobody knows it's a thing, which is a shame because it's so useful. This actually reminded me to put in an issue suggesting we change it to Numbers by default, so maybe that'll be a thing.
Thank you for making this video! After seeing this, in my game I went on a massive rampage with my staff sling that unfortunately ended in my death due to a zombie dog catching me and letting the horde get to me. Whoops. Worth it

Very handy. Didn't know how to manually aim. The whole aiming mechanic was confusing to me. I also had never touched the pocket mechanics. That stuff was new to me too. Entertaining video too.
Worth mentioning that Taekwondo is a martial arts you can use while holding something (eg a sling), since it's all kicks. So you can shoot something until it gets into melee range and then kick it to death while still holding your ranged weapon. Caution: hard to give up once you've tried it though, like infidelity.
Incredible tutorial series! Don't know if I would play the game without you, keep it up! One question though, at 16:58 how do I get 'long sticks' required for the craft?
Saplings. Hit them with stout sticks or rocks. You can use unarmed but it takes longer usually. If you have any kind of ax that's usually the fastest way to smash them.
Interesting. I've never used manual aim, only regular or careful since I'm too lazy to adjust it every time Once I got my hands on a hunting rifle my aiming choice is always p
I like to manually aim because it makes it a lot easier to keep track of where all the enemies are, you don't get any big time jumps where suddenly someone is right in your face.
Ok, please explain me why you managed to get Fresh weariness coming from Very Weary while my character struggles to fully recover starting from half Lightly Weary bar. What am I doing wrong? I have 200 health and 24 health modifier (checked via debug), eat super healthy, go to sleep at 9 PM and wake up at 4 AM.
The weariness calculations are pretty complicated, I'd be interested to know more about your situation. One big thing is that if your body is low on stored calories (ie underweight), you'll actually recover more slowly, I think injury might also contribute. Age and body size can also be a factor, but unless you are heavily mutated or extremely old, it shouldn't be a factor. Are you running any CBMs? The metabolic battery charger will prevent you from properly resting as it's leeching off your body's energy stores. The only other thing I can think of is if you're super overburdened, it might be negatively impacting your rest rate.
@@mutantwormgirl Sorry I'm late but only managed to have some time now. MSXOtto+. It and Ultica are the most regularly updated and complete of all the sets. MSXOtto+ looks the best in my opinion, though Chibi Ultica (Ultica tiles with MSXOtto sprites) is good too.
I usually skip the primitive ranged weapons, never found them truly worth using. I'll just make myself a homemade halfpike or a wooden spear and try to get a gun. Get yourself a suppressed pistol caliber carbine and you're set for a very long time. Otherwise you can sneak into a FEMA camp and snatch an M4 from the armory. It'll do in a pinch, but it's sure to attract a lot of attention every time you use it.
I usually just make a cudgel and roll with that until I find something better or can make a shillelagh/loaded stick. But my goal with this series was to give new players a foundation of knowledge using items that are guaranteed to be lying around the shelter. In future episodes we'll cover looting and the importance of trying to find a gun before you bump into a hulk or shocker and really need one.
@@mutantwormgirl oh no yeah i agree, i actually learned that you can indeed make slings thanks to this series, you're doing a good job showing people the basics.
It's weird how weak a basic sling is in this game, considering how in real life a good sling can send a pebble or ball bearing downrange with the force of a bullet...
I'd say it's pretty accurate. Real slings are nowhere near as powerful as a handgun is. Yes there's some mouthbreathers who both up some maths and unironically think that a small sling is just as powerful as a 9x19 handgun but it's.... not even close. And we're using it against zombies in game, who don't feel pain. So that extra stopping power really makes a difference.

Not to mention, that the projectile itself is ill suited for penetration, as it's shape favors it crushing rather than piercing, which makes it even less effective. The 9x19 bullet is small, and shaped correctly for a penetrating effect. A well placed sling shot will kill you, but so will a not as well placed handgun shot.
