Bill Duke: My Great Grandparents were Slaves, I Hated White People as a Child (Part 1)

  • In this clip, Bill Duke spoke about growing up in Poughkeepsie, NY during the 1940s and 1950s. His parents moved north to escape the oppression of the Jim Crow south equipped with just a 2nd and 3rd-grade education, respectively. Bill Duke opened up about some his early experiences dealing with racism and how some whites defied the racist logic of the time as well. He recalled what it was like being a pre-teen when the Emmitt Till story made national headlines.

You can judge whoever you like. If they subject themselves to your judgement, that's on them. Indeed, no one is any greater or less than any others. But imagine asking a person for freedom or equality... You decide to be free and determine your own value. If you have to ask to be free, you aren't free. If you have to ask for equality, you aren't equal.

The last 100-150 years, was a time in America where, ppl could be successful, off of very little, if they were special eneough, determined.
My grandpa was pretty successful as a 9th grade dropout. Wasn’t rich, but when I was a kid I thought he was, cause of how I was comin up.
Mostly it always amazed me how smart he was.
Though he wasn’t a entrepreneur like you’re father.
I feel like it’s hard to be a entrepreneur these days, especially with a limited education.
A lot has been done, and the avenues are less.

Those stories are something I hear from my aunt's, uncles, and Dad all of the time when I sit ask and listen. Bill Mauldin b.k.a Bill Duke came from strength, resolve, and determination. I'm sure all of my great great grandparents kids passed this on to every child.
Seeing him for the first time as a child in the movie Car Wash, the role he played, Abdullah, was him for the times. And for his family and race who felt like him. The role is for me and the rest of his lil cousins who deal with the same bigotry, racism, and hate that was passed on to people of today. "When we know better, we should always do better" something said to me over the years by elders who lived through the bs.

I agree but don’t say “Theres only one race the human race” people get mad annoyed by that because humans are not a race we are a species and races do exist. Being a different race from someone is not a bad thing you just have to accept that people are different and glorious in their own ways.

During the Riots black people were going after Asians also because of the shooting of Latasha Harlins by a Korean lady when she mistakenly thought Latasha stole something and shot her in the back of her head as she was walking away but for some crazy reason the judge decided not to give the Asian lady any prison time. Black people started attacking Asians after that murder Korean or not, anyone who looked Eastern Asian was being attacked if they walked into the wrong place. I had two Japanese friends that were beaten almost to death in a shopping plaza by 4 black men who told them that the beating is for Latasha. The gun store owners couldn't keep up with the demand for guns from the Asian community in the LA area.

People do what makes money for them not for a few people who will not check for them.. If we go to our jobs we go there to make money! I met Bill Duke while working on a movie set. Even though I was only an film extra then, he treated me as though I was an equal. Later, when I became a professional working actor, I would run into him on other movie sets from time to time, and he would always greet me with a smile and his wonderful spirit. I would see him go on to be a great director as well, and am proud to think of him as a friend. But I had never heard of his background experiences as a child, so thank you for posting this great tribute, to a great man.

I was relieved to hear Mr. Duke talk about the sidewalk thing as I have been lied to by older, Southern white people when I try to get them to tell the truth about the sidewalk race rules for Atlanta.
Poor whites who grew up at the Atlanta Milltown neighborhood have told me that the Atlanta police enforced the unwritten sidewalk rules based on whether or not the black person had a white "angel" ( usually an elite Atlanta AngloSaxon Klansmen or DoC relative or boss) who vouched for them.
Sometimes, the black person did not know they had a white "angel" who was giving them a little leeway to walk on the sidewalk that other black people did not have.
The most dangerous time for an elite black person in Atlanta was when their white " angel" died. Sometimes the white "angel"'s heirs secretly withdrew protection. The first inkling the unprotected Black Atlanta elite had that their privilege was revoked was when they walked down the sidewalk like they had for years, but ended up arrested for not jumping into the gutter for a "white" woman.
It didn't matter to the police that the "white" woman wasn't really white, but "Atlanta Yellow" and that she was a prostitute who had been trafficked into Atlanta by the Klan police at such a young age she didn't know who she belonged to. It didnt matter that she did not want the black man arrested. The only thing that mattered was SWK Atlanta AngloSaxon power.

I always listened in history and read the books because I was intrigued by how a person could be so hateful towards another race simply because of skin color. The books only ever talked about the enslavement, the lynchings it talked about black people being burned, but not the way he just described in this video.. @Ivy King "African American are the only set of black people in the world that think they are something else other than Africans let me set that straight not all but a lot think so and always act like they are better than other blacks around the world
      ."
What? Everybody is from Africa, but the only people who do not live there and are forced to adhere to that continent rather than the one they have been in for hundreds of years are Black Americans. Your rhetoric is so backwards. Do you go under Austrialian videos and complain that the aboriginals built their own culture upon moving? What about those in South America? No right? So where is the logic here?
"and always act like they are better than other blacks around the world
      .""
Have you traveled abroad? The only inclusive Black culture in the WORLD is in the US. Its why every other Blacks and "POC" die to live there. The hate for BAs is far greater than what you are making up in your mind.
"the brainwashing starts in the African American community thinking they Indians lol"
Indians are from India. Native American is a legal classification, not a race nor ethnicity. The truth is that only 5% of West africans in the slave trade arrived during the Transatlantic slave trade, hundreds of thousands occupied the land before after migrating on their own from Africa. You should travel more.

Did you hear Vlad's, yeah, okay at the 3:44 mark. Although he knows the history of America, it is still difficult for non-black people to hear it and it should be. People really think just because a law was implemented (slavery ended, civil rights bill) that people changed the way they felt about black people. As if they had a racist switch in them that they could cut off. This was just 50 years ago people. So that means if your mother was a racist then, she is just a tolerable racist now. But you grew up with racist parents, grandparents, uncles cousins and aunties. They BBQ's black folks, lynched, castrated, bombed children. That is some deeply rooted hatred for another human being just because they are a different color. So don't think that deep rooted hatred just went away because a so called law went into affect. How old is the President of the USA? The senators and their families? What side of the fence do you think they were on in the 50s and 60s? Do you think they changed their view just because of a law? This is why they want to control the law and are afraid of those that implement it. Good interview VLAD .. proud to be a subscriber of your channel. It should be impossible to hate yourself when others are ready to kill and destroy you without pause (because "...no one is better than you"). most_fly I mean if that’s your child then you clearly got nothing against them evidently but the issue is they have and had something against you unfortunately and to many fail to even get the depths of what has happened and is happening and It seems your one of them, well that feeling a way won’t stop you from running away from your own genes I just find it quite funny the amount of black men who don’t want their children to be actual black men and women like them if that’s not white inferiority rearing it’s head I don’t know what else is the future is racially ambiguous I guess I mean it’s littrally all you see promoted either all white or interracial families and it’s clearly in some peoples interest more than others
