Part 6: • Bill Duke on Getting B...
Part 1: • Bill Duke Tells a Joke...
    ----------------
Bill Duke spoke to VladTV about witnessing the progression in society since the 1940s and realizing that integration brought more freedoms and access to black people, but he added that there was never an economic integration. During the conversation, Bill Duke also stated that he wanted the 40 acres and a mule that President Lincoln promised, and he went on to speak about the division of races in society today.
Elsewhere in the clip, he also opens up about how his commitment to his career kept him from having children, noting that parenting is not actually about 'having' children, as opposed to being about fathering, mothering, and providing. Additionally, Duke notes that the racism he faced over his dark complexion had at times led him to not want to be a father, as he points out that dark skin has universally been discriminated against around the globe.

THIS IS why Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad went hard during those days because they know how damaged our mindsets were then. "Who taught you to hate yourselves".

Bill Duke was a very nice man that I had the pleasure of knowing. He was our neighbor “Cloverdale.” I remember when he told me that I should consider becoming a Model😌 Never once did I think that I was Model material. He boost my self esteem and did not know it. I watch this man on Television and read about his success, never once knew what a successful Man he would become. Never once did Mr. Bill Duke know, those words he spoke to me was an encouragement and motivational words that help shape me into the young lady that I was, that lead to A Mature, Successful and Productive Woman that I am Today. Thanks Mr. Duke ❤️

Yes, me and Billy were close as well. He was a pleasant man, very well mannered and uplifting. Always giving out loose compliments and helping the community. He was a near perfect citizen, until he got drunk. We were participants of anti neo nazi raids together, as well as several bar brawls. Yes I remember William quite well, this man was the epitome of a hell raiser. Fun as hell to be around might I add. We go on those raids dressed in black with metal baseball bats, and any fuckin known racist would have to be dealt with.

I carry a guilt inside of my soul because yearrrs ago in my late teens, a friend of mine who was very dark skin, was dumped by a really gorgeous guy whose skin was also extremely dark. He just up and dropped her for what we assumed was no reason. He confessed to me when I ran into him some time later that he only let my friend go because he was falling in love with her. He was afraid that they would "fuck around and have a Black ass baby." She and I are still very close to this day but I never revealed that bit of info to her. I always thought that it would break her heart.

This is so sad. Most black folks don't even realize that the most radical action we as a people can perform in this society is to love ourselves. I've never thought white folks' ice cubes were colder - I've said this to my white friends - and I never will. I refuse to hate myself. I have better things to do with my time.

It matters, it goes to show he's lived and seen the progression of American against Black people and, while some things have changed, we are still having the same issues with race so many years later. It's also of critical importance because too many of our youth don't listen to the elders, who have been through it. Maybe if we did, we wouldn't hate our own, we'd leave that colorism bullshit aside and unite together and try to get shit done so we can, maybe one day, drastically reduce, if not eliminate, racism.

I so agree with you. I find Bill Duke fascinating, his talent, intelligence, heart, and bravery all valuable nuggets that have led me to admire this good man.
There is a story he tells relating to his childhood, he was ostracized by whites because of his dark complexion, a skin color which I believe to be absolutely beautiful. Well, one day, he comes home from school and in his mind, he thought he could drink bleach and his dark skin would change. Fortunately, his mom caught him before he could drink any. My heart was absolutely broken for him, as a mother, I would have been furious at the white people who made this kid feel this way. But, the lesson learned is how deeply scarred a Black person can become from this grotesque hatred, how this admonishment of skin color follows generations, this is how colorism was ingrained in some Blacks. But, I love dark skin, always have and always will.
I love this man because he's a thinker, I'd love to meet him.

      www.imdb.com/title/tt1966396/?ref_=nm_flmg_prd_10
It's a good docu that covers part of the topic. It brought up some questions that I wished they would've also gotten into. Bill Duke brings up one of the people featured in the movie when he talks about a man saying that a dark skinned girl doesn't look good on his arm.
But there was also another male that answered the same question and he he didn't answer that he doesn't because of looks. He said dark skinned girls are mean. I went through hell during the 70s growing up in LA a very dark skinned African looking child, probably twice as dark as I am now. Not only did I catch hell in the streets, from kids at schools, teachers, relatives, but even my own mother told me at 12 that I should not try to talk to good lookin girls because they would only want someone who looked like me if I was a rich ball player. I can only hope that things are different for kids growing up today, but it’s laughable to me when people compare what light skinned blacks experience with what dark skinned blacks experience. I’m sure that light skinned people catch hell growing up but at some point they realize that the hell they caught was due to envy and jealousy. At the end of the day when they live the rest of their lives, they will not be looked at as less attractive or less intelligent or less human the way darker skinned people are in every culture and every race.

This also happened in my family when we were growing up. Some relatives treated us differently because we were darker than some of our cousins even though my Grandfather was a dark man. He was enraged when he found that some of his own children (my aunts who were fairer complected) treated us badly because of our complexion. I witnessed him cry as he walked with us to calm himself down. I was more hurt seeing him cry than my own pain of being treated badly by those who were supposed to love us. I guess that's why I was always so close to him because I know without any doubt that he truly loved us all despite our complexion. Shout outs to VLAD and Bill Duke!

Crazy hearing Bill Duke speak on his experiences and then seeing him watch the young rapper echo the same sentiments but in a much less
eloquent way. Anti black propaganda has really done a number. This is why knowledge of self is so essential. Turn those radios and TVs off sometimes, and pick up some books.

liam white people brought the hatred and oppression/power play to it-prior to the 1500’s it was mainly just tribal discrimination. The original people were BLACK and Caucasians came on the scene with pure evil and insanity. They have caused the most global violence and historical destruction. Letting white play out their own extinction is like letting a petulant spoiled (but in this case power hungry and oppressive ) toddler wear himself out into a very long nap. And never wake up

I hate that darker skin blacks get treated this way and is made to feel this way. I try to treat everyone the same. It takes great courage to go above ones ego to realize "even though I may be happy with my to be child. To force a child into this world is in alot of ways unfair just for my own pleasure". I came to this truth that this isnt a good world and for me on one hand to say I love my child but on the other hand throw my child into a world of nepotism, favoritism, classicism, racism, colorism is pure hypocrisy.
