How do you feel about full day of eating videos?

    • @dreamer7198

I feel that these kind of videos are somehow unrealistic for the majority of people. People who also workout, but they have an 8-9 shift jobs and do other things for a living. So, they can be disappointed for not be able to follow a lifestyle like that. And there are other factors which can lead to frustrating, such as the prices of the products, or the culture of each one. For example, other foods we eat traditionally here in Greece and different things consume people in Asia. Not to mention that, these videos may be triggering for someone who suffers from ED

When I first turned my life around they were very useful to gauge what a normal portion looks like, because I've been raised by morbidly obese feeders who also forced me to eat like them. A full pizza was a 'portion' and I got a lot of shit if I didn't finish it in a single dinner (for example.) But I was lucky to watch the right content creators and not the 1200kcal ones, nowadays I might still use them for recipe inspiration but I prefer videos where they're part of it but not the only focus, like Will Tennyson.

    • @katlavender2806

Some of them can really make you feel inadequate. For example, if you follow someone whose physique inspires you, and they post a video where they eat foods that you've been restricting for months hoping to achieve their physique/better physique.... It really fucks with your head.

    • @bettyhannah5916
      @bettyhannah5916 2 роки тому +4

Personally, I just don't see the point of them. Sure, there may be the odd person who actually recreates a meal or two they see on those videos but the vast vast majority probably just watches them and moves on. Plus, if you want meal inspiration, there are literally billions of recipes out there, online and on paper.
I think the biggest problem that comes with full-day of eating or similar videos is that they're not just triggering for people with eating disorders, they are part of the disorder. As far as I understand, from myself and research on EDs, in the depth of the illness, many sufferers, including my-(former)-self, tend to obsess not just about the food they're eating but also the food everyone else eats. Some people even start becoming amateur chefs and feed everyone else around them 3 course meals while restricting/purging their own. And the worst part is that you don't realise that it's harmful at the time. It doesn't feel triggering or upsetting, it's almost joyful because it allows you to interact with food without the "guilt" that comes with consuming it.
So while I agree with some other comments that some of the videos can be helpful in showing people in recovery what normal portions look like, the vast majority of ED sufferers will seek out the very low calorie ones and use those to justify their own restriction. I'd go so far as to say that the predominant audience of WIEIAD videos are those with disordered eating of some form.
Long story short, there's just no point of comparing one's diet with someone else's especially not over just one day. These videos may be entertaining for some at best but hugely debilitating for most.

I think you have to take them with a grain-no- boulder of salt and only watch from trusted content providers who can contextualize the information. When done well, they can help me calibrate my eating and get a sense if I am maybe out of balance. For example, Redefining Strength did one and it was very helpful to me because it was presented in a very contextualized way. But many of these are really just lies. You see people with six pack abs eating pancakes, fatty rich foods and saying "see? I can eat like this" and that can really make you feel like a loser.

I suffer from anorexia , but I actually find your videos the opposite of triggering. You bring compassion, insight and are quite inspiring. I very much enjoy your content and appreciate that you tackle difficult topics with nuance. I definitely think full day of eating can impact people for the better or the worse, it really just depends. Comparisons are often problematic, and, yes, calories certainly can be triggering for many people.

To TFNL Friends: remember an influencer is a brand, the product most often is themselves. While you're working at your job or are in school, you're producing work like a report or spreadsheet, those same hours the influencer is producing work i.e themselves as a product through social media/video creation. So don't feel down when you can't achieve their fitness or lifestyle, they just spent X hours working on their self-spreadsheet. If they have a team, then multiple people spent their days working on influencer spreadsheet.
What they post isn't realistic because its just a snapshot and the work is self-focused. Don't ever feel like you have failed for not dedicating 7/7 days to yourself - imagine that their assistant is in the same boat as you are.

I approach full day of eating videos in kind of the same way you discussed. I will watch some (from trusted creators) for food or recipe inspiration. However, as someone with a history of EDs, I do try to be extremely careful in my consumption of content that is centered exclusively around tracking/recording all food. In my experience, I think full day of eating videos can be helpful in terms of understanding how MUCH food one could be eating (ie: Jeff Nipper or MegSquats who are showing full days of eating when training). In my opinion, and personal experience, I think the more restrictive ones (ie: 1200 calories or less) can be quite dangerous especially for younger viewers. I won't name any names, but videos posted by influencers detailing their "diet" that closely resembles my own during the height of my ED, sets off major alarms when they know their primary audience is like 12-16 year olds. Anyway, just my two cents. As always, thanks for the vid :)

I love "full day of eating" videos. Actually, especially Natacha Oceane's videos and explanations helped me view nutrition in a different and healthy light! So glad I found her. My eating had been a little disordered and I was on the verge of anorexia when younger but nothing crazy anymore before watching her. I love her and some other creator's healthy relationships with food and I do get a few meal ideas. But I also realize that my needs are different and specific to me.
Edit: I'm selective of the videos I consume. If someone spews nonsense, I immediately stop watching. Unfortunately, many young people don't know the difference and what to look out for

Found this video fascinating Harry. I was planning on actually making a full day of eating video tomorrow, because surprisingly when I ask people what videos they want to see they say they enjoy a full day of eating video. I must admit I haven’t always considered how this can come across to people with eating disorders as well people who maybe very new to training and are looking to copy a specific diet when it’s very individual.
Even though I do not have a big following, from
The comments and DM’s I get, they are often young guys and girls who are just starting their fitness/lifting journey, therefore I am often very careful with the content I put out. This video has made me think about how I’m going to approach these types of videos in the future.

As a person with adhd I like to get some inspiration for food. My meds absolutely kills my appetite, I have to force myself to eat and when someone shows something that looks really good and I just instantly start craving the food I saw, I feel as if I have won the lottery😂
I also have to say that I appreciate it when some of theese people use those kind of videos to show others that you can loose weight and still eat the things you love to eat. Totally guilt free, not making ppl think that dessert is the enemy. Giving ppl smart and yummy alternatives to actually enjoying the process is a really smart thing to do imo, it will hopefully get ppl to understand that it can be a positive experience and not just getting them to hate «bad» food and making them feel ashamed for enjoying said «bad» food.
As always, I enjoy your content so much! U have a way with words, u explain everything so well and you are always so warm, understanding and kind! You never talk shit about others and you are so damn respectful! Honestly, if more ppl were like you the world would be a much better place!

I personally know that I am most likely consuming more full day of eating videos than the average person and I fully agree with your opinion on them potentially being triggering - because some of them definitely can be. Personally, I usually spend my time eating without company and find it really hard to eat that way. That's why I watch those videos, to feel less lonely when I am eating. But I think it totally depends on the person doing the videos, there can be a lot of really helpful youtubers who are not including calories whatsoever and only show meal inspiration. That's the value I see in them :)

I had a not-so-fun time with disordered eating and it really made things so difficult in so many ways. I now practice intuitive eating which really rejects the idea of counting calories and eating specific foods simply because we “should”. I like seeing good food ideas, but I don’t like seeing the calories or amounts of food because it’s so easy to slip into feeling badly about myself for not eating a certain way (despite knowing that I include lots of nutrient dense foods including healthy fats, whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and veg). Eating is and should always be highly individualized, but I feel these videos imply a certain level of “eat like me and you’ll look/perform like me” and that’s horrifically misguided. Just my thoughts.

Love carbs, but there’s a limit. I felt like, as a runner, I need to keep increasing my distance for races to prove that I’m in good shape. At least I know better now, and will take those lessons with me after the race.

The messages in the video are spot on. After years of trying different diets and fads it finally clicked for me that I needed to change my relationship and how I view food. Once I started hearing the message that food is fuel, that started helping me switch my mindset. I tracked macros for about 4 months just to help rewire my brain on how I should be balancing my diet. That being said, once I was around the 4 month of tracking I saw the dangers of tracking come out (just what I experienced). I started becoming fixated on calories and the macros for the day, even if I wasn’t hungry at night but I had calories left to burn I would force myself to eat, that’s when I realized I was ready to move towards intuitive eating. Now I eat when and what my body is craving. I think this is super important, especially for women. Studies have shown that for women who are moving through their different cycles each month correlate with a influx of calories and other nutrients during those times. I know people all have their different lifestyles and different things work for different people, but I couldn’t be happier with intuitive eating.

I'm definitely not where I want to be aesthetic-wise, but I am also debating whether it's worth it if I feel absolutely miserable and hungry during the process itself. Lately I've been enjoying not counting calories and instead focusing on my body's hunger cues, feeling strong when I workout, and how it frees up a lot of time to not obsess over food 24/7. I still have my "bad days", of course, where I question whether what I'm doing is right, but more and more I am trying to tell myself that achieving my goal of a flat stomach won't make me a better or more valuable person. 😅

I like what I eat in a day videos just because I'm nosey and like to see how other people live their lives. However... they did really mess me up in the past but not any more than just being around other people while they ate... I have a fast metabolism for my height. But I have a very healthy appetite so I've never dealt with being too thin and I can overeat and gain weight. I'm 32 5'1" sort of active female and I maintain 125 lbs at 2500 to 3000 calories. I've had friends my same height and size who ate waaaaaay less and I felt really embarrassed by it. People have made comments in the past about how much I eat and didn't believe me when I said I was starving a few hours after eating so much. It almost felt not feminine to eat so much. When I was younger I would try to emulate what I eat in a day's from other women that looked like me, so like 1500 to 1700 calories and I would get dizzy spells if I stood up, I'd feel faint, couldn't sleep, and would stop working out because I just couldn't move. I don't like needing to eat this much it's honestly annoying. I think people should remind people in those videos that calorie need recommendations are an AVERAGE which means you will have outliers like me lol

    Two random (nice!) comments:
    1. Really good trigger explanation/debunk. Not an ED peep, a PTSD bod, but honestly probably the best overview/disclaimer I’ve heard.
    2. Just realised why I still watch (tldr body is being ridiculous and use mobility aids because spine is basically a wasteman at this point). Dunno if it’s deliberate, but your content is actually pretty disability-inclusive. I’ve been on the pivot point of “do I use a wheelchair and max out when not in it, or do I not do that but accept less overall activity/freedom” for a few years now. There’s a few wheelie creators doing fitness stuff anyway, but you’re one of very few people I watch who does fitness for people with typical leg power & balance potential.
You’ve just got a really good knack for not making me feel rubbish about my body being radically different to what it was, and it’s like I don’t have to actively address the ongoing grieving for that while I watch. I can just kick back and actually focus on what you’re saying. That’s a rare talent.
It’s nice to be seen as just another fleshy bone bag trying to make the most out of what I’ve got 👍

For me personally, I'm in a very similar mindset about full day of eating videos as you. I watch both videos from people that are training and aiming for a calorie amount but I also watch a lot of videos of people that don't train, don't track and just eat whatever when they want. Both of these I watch for inspiration for meals, whether those meals are aiming to help me fit into my macros or something that just looks tasty and I want to try.
I think the problem definitely can come when people are maybe struggling with eating disorders or feeling lost on their journey they'll look to replicate them or feel bad about their own food. It's definitely something that people need to consider how viewing this content will personally affect THEM and whether its beneficial for the consumption of that content in the long run or if it just fuels their damaging mindset more. I've been on the ED boat with watching these videos and it definitely made me feel worse at the time, now I'm in a healthier place with calories and food etc in general these videos are more beneficial than detrimental to me.

I unfortunately went through a period where I was very into watching extremely low calorie what I eat in a day videos and those were very harmful and as I tried to develop a better relationship with food I came to really dislike those types of videos as a whole. However, recently I've gotten into what I eat in a day videos that really encourage eating enough and finding balance and they've really helped me. Especially Natacha Oceane's videos. I definitely relate to what you said about just liking to watch people eat while you eat lol. And hey give me inspiration too

Something that pisses me off about "full day of eating" and "day in the life" videos is that most of the influencers have partners and no full time jobs. They'll be like: "so i have two sunny side eggs, on organic avocado toast, with fresh cut berries and green juice - so healthy and satisfying!" Like seriously, you have like an hour to make breakfast and journal everyday? Try having work deliverables or a commute or a job with performance measures.. they don't show that a large portion of their life is run by other people (partners, assistants, business managers, editors, etc) when none of what they are doing is achieved by a single person. Its just deceiving and disappointed

As someone who has recovered from an ED, I am a strong believer that everyone(!) should follow intuitive eating, and it is absolutely possible to attain your goals while doing so. It’s been possible for me and other influencers like Libby Christensen. If anyone seeing this is struggling or would like to find out more, I found the podcast “Eating Disorders Recovery Podcast” by Tabitha Farrar to be huge in my recovery and a great resource. ❤️

I found calorie counting quite triggering for me in the past. I have always been insecure about my body, and that did lead to restricting and feeling guilty about eating certain foods. I try to follow creators/influencers who do not count their calories and intuitively eat and i find inspiration in their meal ideas to incorporate in my own. I do track calories now, but purely to see if i am eating the recommneded intake for myself and to judge how I feel. I think FDOE videos can be good, but you have to be careful how you approach them, like what you discussed. Thanks for the video! The yellow fluff sitting on the side of your face annoyed me to no end though lol.

I like watching Natacha's Full day of eating videos. She had some fun food ideas. Full day of eating videos have caused a lot of harm to my mental health in the past. I'd see women eating 1300 calories and feel terribly about myself because u was eating a lot more.

  • @finn1666

Personally, What I Eat In A Day videos have quite the positive effect on me. I like to follow smaller youtubers, like Grackle or Linh Trang, because they don't follow a diet, they don't calorie track - they just eat when they want what they want. They approach food as something that makes them happy. And it rubs off. It also makes me want to try new foods, that I previously couldn't eat because of ARFID.
On the flip side, seeing those videos that focus on a certain amount of calories (both undereating & overeating) make my stomach turn. They have a time and place, but they're also very bad manipulators. Watching people eat >2.5k cal makes me want to eat less. Watching people eat

  • @TheVivaciousNerd
    @TheVivaciousNerd 2 роки тому

Interestingly enough, when I first started trying to get healthy I watched a lot of these videos and became a bit obsessed with making every single meal beautiful and "healthy" (which actually meant low-cal to me and the creators I watched back then). Calorie counting was also harmful for me at the time because I hadn't properly dealt with my body image issues or my food issues, so it lead to some harmful behaviour.... Not that I'm perfect now, but after a couple years of no counting and no weighing and really working on the emotional side of things, I'm going back to it now to get into muscle building! I never ever thought I would want to ADD to my body, but now I'm so excited to see that first bit of buldging as my muscles grow! I feel way more able to view this from a scientific perspective, counting just to optimise and understand my doet from a nutritional perspective. Tracking revealed to me that my daily protein was way below even the government guidelines, let alone the levels needed to build muscle. Correcting that improved my energy levels a lot, no longer hungry all the time! Ive always been very weak physically, and building strength now is more like a hobby than a mandate (cos strength isn't a need, its just a goal I'm pursuing for fun and health).

I have made what I eat in a day videos tht weren't focused on calories. I also could binge the next day but I was good on taping days.
But I also found out after I had my last baby, that some of the more "intuitive eating" types made me angry and frustrated in even trying. Not sure if they are fake but some of these super slender people are eating huge meals(but at the same time super food focused) and I was upset that I couldn't even do that when nursing a kid! Obviously I will always need to have some sort of awareness on what I eat. 🤷
I am hoping to find a more balanced approach this time and find happiness in what helps me attain health.

I love what I eat in a days and similar videos, but use them for meal inspiration and recipe ideas rather than seeing them as things I need to copy. It also means I usually only watch creators who eat foods that I enjoy rather than overly restrictive creators. However I can absolutely see how these kinds of videos could negatively impact some people.

Comment question! I realize this may be kinda stupid: The concept of failure is still somewhat confusing. For instance, when benching or OHPing, if I take a couple of seconds of extra rest at the top, I'm able to get a few more reps in. Does training to failure mean: no more rep with minimal rest time between reps or no more reps with x seconds of rest between reps? With squats and DLs this is extra confusing.

I believe WIEIAD videos start to become somewhat dangerous when for example a youtuber let's their audience know that they're activelly avoid a certain type of food/food groups because it isn't "good for them" or "clean enough". It makes me kinda sad to watch that because that person is clearly struggling with their relationship with food but at the same time it is very irresponsible of their part to be spreading that kind of messaging, you know? Im sorry if this sounded kinda confusing, i'm not a native speaker :X
Also, where the hell do you get all of your hats? Do you have a special closet for them or something?😅

I'm recovered from an eating disorder. I personally like FDOE videos for the purpose of meal ideas and recipes. The people I watch that do FDOE don't include any calories about the food, generally female creators tend not to, it seems to be mainly in the bodybuilding space. However, I personally don't really think it's a major issue, and I definitely wouldn't say all influencers should just ignore calories altogether, because that's also not helpful. It's complicated as you could say that literally anything could be triggering to someone with an ED if the content is about food. I think that as long as the creator puts a disclaimer on the video that's as far as their responsibilities extend. If you think something is triggering to you and your ED, don't watch it. Unless the creator is making false claims or putting out dangerous information then I don't think it needs to be 'called out'
