• The Untold Truth Of Cl...
Glad you covered this one. When celebrity walks in the front door of the courtroom, justice walks straight out the back.
Great comment. Haven't heard that expression before ,👍
Yes I couldn't say it any better than that! That's are legal system!😔😔😝👎
A study of over 70,000 court cases also show a sentencing hierarchy, the shortest sentences go the well off, educated women. If the woman is young and attractive, even more so.
Check again. It cuts both ways. Often well known people are made example of. The best measure of getting away with a crime is money.
@@gregb3457 .
That wasn't what the study found. Wealth is often connected with education.
The fact that Claudine was attractive and spoke with a charming French accident probably did influence the jury. I also would not discount Andy Williams' role. He was a very charming man with a squeaky-clean reputation. As mentioned, he had a TV show and a long career as a recording artist. He was widely loved by the American public. He not only testified for Claudine, he attended the trial every day to support her. I would imagine the jury gave a lot of weight to his testimony and his presence at the trial.
"a charming French accident " -- Was that how her attorney characterised it?
@@onepartyroule Good catch! Or maybe he said she had accidental French charm.
They did.
Yes, Andy Williams was the all-American boy. He did an annual Christmas special for a couple of years - which was supposedly filmed in their home - I remember one where Claudine had a newborn on her lap along with two other young children. They were a very attractive couple.
Not wanting to analyze anyone, but could the use of the word 'accident' instead of 'accent' (above) be a Freudian slip? ; )
Claudine had this I am a fragile French girl thing going on that she got a lot of mileage out of. Very appealing. I suspect justice was not served because of that.
I knew a woman once who had that fragile French girl thing going on.
She was in the SCA, and fought two-swords, and made a very strong bid to become the first Queen of the East Kingdom to be crowned by right of arms. (SCA rattan fighting is an exciting martial sport that makes rugby look like cricket.) This was before she went to prison for knifing her girlfriend.
Things haven’t changed much.

Yes, and seriously, it seems to me she was very stupid to leave Andy Williams.
@@bluecollarlit What makes you think she left him? Andy Williams said that she had a crazy, volatile temper. Maybe, he left her.
Or moving in with a girl called Claudine.
Moving in with South African runner without lower legs but still a runner not safe in bathroom there either.
Drugs, alcohol, Longet’s dependence on men, her anger management and impulsivity problems, a gun, jealousy…..what could go wrong here? Longet dodged a bullet, so to speak because of her sweet little voice (I remember the trial.) and her beauty and fame. She murdered a man and got away with it!! The fact that her lawyer married her after knowing all the facts of the case is a mystery to me. I wonder how her kids turned out having her for a mother.
Some woman married one of the Mendez brothers some people are not too bright.
Well, well. It appears Spider married a black widow. Excellent speculation once again, Dr. Grande.

Aspenites loved Spider🕷 & loathed Claudine, even more after she got a slap on the wrist for this crime. Surprised that she chose to continue to live there.
Slap on the wrist is right!! 😡
I remember this case. It was shocking! My family would watch William's show and Christmas specials. That relationship with Sabitch and Longet was zero from the start. Her sentence was pathetic.
It seems like a lot of very wealthy & popular Aspenites have gotten away with horrific crimes. That of course applies to most of The US as well also however.
I'm so glad you covered this. I was a legal researcher at the time and followed this case very closely. There are some things that are rarely recounted today. That replica gun was given to him by his father for display, yet he kept it in a drawer. Here was the kicker for me: The safety on that gun did not work. Andy Williams, despite his public anti-gun stance, kept a weapon at home for self-defense. That came to light when the police responded to a call of either a prowler or an attempted break-in, and Andy met them at the door with the gun. So there was a reasonable expectation that Claudine would assume the safety was on. Or it could go the other way, that she would have had more knowledge of firearms than was assumed.
Claudine was not the bimbo starlet she is presented as today. She was actually in a repertoire theater group in France as a child. She was also a dancer and had ambitions to come to America. When the Folies Bergere was auditioning girls to dance the can-can in Las Vegas, she saw that as her ticket to the States. She was a good dancer but could not do the can-can, but she faked it and got the job anyway.
Her children were in the house. To me this rules out premeditated murder, because what mother kills the boyfriend with the children in the house? Andy Williams later said he came and got their children and took them back to LA so that they couldn't be involved in the case. He was very much afraid of the mental effects it might have on them.
It was known at the time that Aspen was very hostile to Claudine because they felt she had stolen their big star and put him on the shelf. There was a great deal of animosity against her and people feared she would not get a fair trial.
I personally never put any stock in what they supposed girlfriend said. He dated a lot of women, and not all of them were particularly disinterested in publicity. When she married her attorney Ron Austin, my first thought was that he must have thought she was not guilty or he would have been worried she might do the same thing to him. I am definitely not condoning their adulterous relationship. But that marriage is still going, and so far he is still alive. I have no idea whether or not he is brave enough to keep a gun in the house.
I guess we'll never know what happened, but I appreciate your putting the facts out there and your opinion, which which I agree. All I know is that she fired the gun, and Spider died as a result. I know this sounds like I'm defending her, but I realize that few people today know what people of that time in the legal community did about this case. It was briefly in the newspapers, but not all facts have a long shelf life.
Thanks again for another great analysis!
How come you think SHE is guilty, sounds even more like she is innocent. HE is the one who left it lying around, and he KNEW it was fucked up. He is the fuck up, not her, how could it NOT go off by accident!! Sounds like you DO know the case, what am I missing? Now I'm really confused....lol.
@@fuzzymath6240 I understand your confusion! The only reason I would find her guilty of anything is because she did have a loaded weapon, it did fire, and a man died. Personally, I do not think she meant to shoot him and I think there were enough complications in this case to justify letting her off. I still can't get past that her children were in the house. That's just not the way women shoot people. By all accounts, including those of her children, she was a good mother. To me it was a tragic accident. If someone told me this was a replica of some famous gun, I would hear the word "replica" and not think of it as dangerous. A lot of us working around the courthouse agreed that we would have probably not brought it to trial, especially in Aspen. I don't remember where the trial was held, frankly. I still think it was Aspen, but we would have asked for a change of venue given the attitude there toward Claudine. I also can't get past that the safety didn't work. What do you think of all this? Do you think she was guilty or innocent? Do you think it was accidental?
One of the problems is that so much was said that could not be substantiated. The jury pool was poisoned. Hearsay and rumor were just all over the place. The talk about the diary and the blood test muddied the water so much and yet no one could produce either one. Spider was a known drug user - and people in that town knew him well. It's no wonder Spider's parents made the deal with Claudine not to talk about the case, which I imagine was the last thing she wanted to do anyway. I'll never understand why some women go for the bad boys.
"Her children were in the house. To me this rules out premeditated murder, because what mother kills the boyfriend with the children in the house? "
I mean, she had no problem to do coke and alc with children in the house.
@@MsSonali1980 I wish Dr. Grande would weigh in on this. I think addictive behaviors and cold-blooded murder come from two different places. When I lived out West I knew a lot of people who thought nothing of drinking, smoking, etc. In front of their children. None of them would raise a hand to their children. Usually those adult cocaine things were done after the children were in bed. But then I have heard of other cases, like Robert Downey Jr, where the kids were involved. Go figure. If you are reading this, Dr. Grande, help!

Yeah, the bathroom is not the place to give firearm tutorials; everyone knows that the walk in closet is the correct place for that. The bathroom is for archery tutorials.
That leaves the kitchen for knives, right?
Afraid to ask what other room specific weapons tutorials you know of? Haha

Archery - Funny Story: My 13 year old son suddenly took up archery after doing it at school. We bought him a bow, arrows, target, etc. He and my husband were out in our backyard practicing, but I was unaware of it. I opened the back gate in our rear yard and started walking, and an arrow whizzed by my head….just missed me but it was a good shot, almost perfectly center on the target. My poor son was so traumatized, he never did archery again. Sometimes we have angels on our shoulders, I guess. 🙂
If your boyfriend's name is "spider"... well, that's your first problem
I get reminded of Spider from Goodfellas when I hear of someone named as such.

I remember this case, but had forgotten the details of its disposition. Claudine had a couple of minor hits and she was popular for a while. This is a pretty good example of our two-tiered justice/injustice system.
You have more shirts than "Jay Gatsby."
And that's a nice one.
Edit: And I remember the Andy Williams Show as the venu in which Bobby Hatfield, of the Righteous Brothers, made his unequalled recording of "Unchained Melody," which was used later in a couple of movies.

I remember it. I’m a month away from being 71.
I'm 18 :|
I remember Spyder, but didn’t remember that he died in this manner. I don’t remember Claudine, at all. 🤷🏻♀️
I slightly remember it, although I was a small child at the time.
I’ve actually not heard of this, so it’s quite interesting to say the least. Thank you for the video Dr. Grande, keep up the great work!
I had a huge crush on Claudine Longet, one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen back in the 60’s. Having said that, I believe she should have been convicted, not of reckless this or negligent that, but of First Degree Murder. But it sounds like The Keystone Cops played a major role in her “snow job.”
I remember this being a huge news story at the time, and I often find myself thinking about it, wondering what exactly happened. This seems to be one of those things where we're just going to be stuck with a whole lot of unanswered questions.
Claudine should have been sentence longer than 30 days!!!
Great video Dr Grande!!!

"Accidentally shot...by Claudine Longet"
It’s a good thing she was still friends with her ex-husband and that he was a generous man.
With connections to powerful politicians.
I appreciate your detailed and accurate description of firearms used in these cases. So often these details are totally botched and completely erroneous due to the ignorance of the reporter/analyst.
I remember the incident well, having handled a vintage Luger brought back from WW2 by a friend's father, who was in the OSS. And here's the problem: How could she keep clicking the gun? It's a single action, recoil operated semiautomatic, and that includes the Luger imitators for calibers other than 9mm Parabellum. In order to bring the firing pin down repeatedly on the same cartridge, the gun would both have to initially jam, and then be cycled by drawing up the toggle, ejecting the jammed round and chambering a new one. That requires deliberate and rather protracted action, a point Dr. Grande did not make clear. He spent a couple of lines on irrelevancies, such as the fact that the weapon was also available in 7.65mm, but missed the point about repeatedly cycling the weapon. It is this point that needed to be made clear: Spider had his back to Longet. He never had a chance.
Contrary to many of your more nascent followers, I certainly remember this. However, I'm fairly confident you had to resort to secondary sources. Still, one of my advanced age nevertheless appreciates being thrown the occasional bone! It's so nice to reminisce re the 60s and 70s. But the entire RFK tragedy still feels like a knife in my gut. His was a dream we all longed to share.
Me too! Will never forget the day he was shot. Then he lingered for a few hours in the hospital and died. Had he won the election, he had promised to stop the Viet Nam war. Just think of how many lives would have been spared. The Kennedys had a reputation, especially their father, Joe Sr., of being aligned with the mob and not being particularly trustworthy. Then the Kennedy family suddenly became martyrs after JFK was shot. But I have always believed that RFK somehow rose above this influence in the last years of his life. I have speculated that his dedication to and work in the civil rights movement may have been what transformed him.
The 60s -

Martin Luther King
Bobby Kennedy

Followed by a fifty year propaganda campaign teaching hatred of liberals. Hmmmh.
While I respect your right to a candidate favorite, only 50 percent shared your dream of another Kennedy in the white house.
Fun fact: Also in the Aspen courthouse, in 1977 Ted Bundy escaped by jumping out a window as no one was actually watching him.
You can't make this stuff up!😫
I read the book on Teddy Boy. The one that got away from him in Utah led to his capture. He did plenty of damage before he was caught, though. A good read if you like true crime dramas, but parts of it are tough sledding.
@@morrisritchie870 what is the name of the book if u dont mind? thank oyou
To TOL fan 01: There are a number of them, but the one I read was “The Only Living Witness.”
I read about that, he gained the trust of an officer, then took the opportunity when he had it and bailed. Too bad he was sick af, cuz he had a decent IQ, and if he weren’t so mentally messed up, he might have had a decent life.
Ah, the benefits of being wealthy and beautiful….
I always thought Claudine got off not only because she was the former wife of Andy Williams and young and beautiful but she had 3 young kids and she was visibly upset by what she'd done.

Definitely! She would have been an obscure struggling actress if she had not married Andy Williams. In my post above I speculated that his presence probably had a major effect on the jury.
Yes, he played a solid role in getting her off lightly, i imagine for their children's sake plus he probably still cared a lot for Claudine.
I just love how alot of defense "experts" dog on the 22 caliber. But in real life, I see over and over how the 22, and also the much dogged on 25 ACP caliber, are very often used in shootings with very deadly results
A lot of firearms are chambered in .22. Maybe 2nd behind .223
I remember this, it was all the buzz when I was little.

Considering that Claudine Longet was famous for being married to Andy Williams and a bunch of sitcom appearances, this was a jury easily impressed by fame. Had Williams himself been on trial, I imagine that the opening of the trial would have been delayed by the jurors asking Williams for his autograph.
Sitcom appearances?
I think she made appearances on variety shows.
Correction, Google says she did have roles on several situation comedies.
My bad.
I remember Spider Sabich and Claudine Longet as a case of an extremely clingy woman who moved in with a freewheeling guy, then tried to stop him from basically being himself. Well, she did.

People always forget one of the most important gun safety rules: Never bring a gun into the bathroom when someone is showering.
Although probably meant as funny, this is sort of true! No room to maneuver and increased vulnerability!
Also be conscious of your outfit choice, apparently being in your underwear has a large impact on whether or not you'll be shot.

Twenty-two caliber pistols are claimed to be a weapon of choice among professional hitmen, which is not to say that Longet was a professional hitwoman.

Claudine was lovely...and evidently the inspiration for "Snapped." SNL did a great skit called "The Claudine Longet Invitational" in which she used a rifle to pick off men skiing competitively in Aspen.

I remember that SNL skit also. Hilarious in a sad way...
Andy William brother was at my church during the Christmas season and did a concert of songs in the mid 2000s. His brother loved visiting churches. Enjoyed that evening.
I remember the SNL skit on this from twenty or thirty years ago. It was the "Claudine Longet Invitational Downhill Ski Championship" or something like that. I think Kevin Nealon was the announcer. It was just a collection of videos of downhill skiers falling and tumbling down a mountain. Skiing, skiing, skiing... BANG! Skier falls down. "Oh no! He has been accidentally shot by Claudine Longet!" More skiing, BANG, another tumble. "Oh no! He has been accidentally shot by Claudine Longet! What an unlucky break."

@@natekeyes2297 it definitely was. I was a kid at the time, and if what @Genesis1 says is true (I wouldn’t doubt it) then I’ve only seen it once, and it has stuck with me to this day. I think she accidentally shot four skiers-in four shots-that day. It was classic.
I have been waiting for this analysis, Thank You Dr. Grande!
Doctor, 22 is actually the choice of assassin's. The round when shot into ones head does not create an exit wound which actually increases the chances of death but as importantly does not leave a mess. It's also nearly silent.
Also, the bullet will ricochet off the inside of the skull at least once, possibly several times, multiplying the damage paths within the brain -- it's like getting two or three bullets for the price of one. Each ricochet further deforms the bullet or its fragments, which may drastically decrease its ballistic-forensic value. Beyond the fact that .22 ammunition is as generic and as common as sparrows.
Have you ever done an analysis of the Fatty Arbuckle murder case? I'd like to see that.
nice one
Great one!
I agree wish dr grande would do the Arbuckle case
You have, as always, information I've never heard. Thank You!
Thank you so much for digging up this case from the distant past and presenting it so well.
Back in the 1960s, when I was just a kid, I remember my mon watching Claudine on various programs and listening to her sing and commenting that she had no talent. Her singing was breathy and insubstantial and she gave off the vibe of a helpless little girl. She liked Andy Williams, but couldn't see why he married her, given that he must have had other choices. As I grew older and developed my own opinions, I came to agree with my mom. As a teenager, I was disgusted that the "helpless, little girl" persona and Williams' money, plus the gullibility of the jury to let her get off so easily. That's when I came up with the need for "an idiot with a gun" law. If you "wander" around your house with a loaded gun and a family member, friend, or other guest ends up dead, that's not an accident. That's inevitable and you need more than a slap on the wrist.
I didn't know much about her at the time but I remember her growing up and I remember not liking her. She seemed 2 dimensional and fake. Didn't even know about the murder thing.

My father was the drummer on the Andy Williams show. Even after they had divorced she would still appear with the kids on the Christmas specials. I remember this case quite well. Very highly publicized with three "celebrities" involved. Also, it was very sadly strange from all facets. Especially when ex-husband, Andy Williams, got involved. Another factor which should be taken into account, is that in the 70s and for a couple of decades afterwards, the idea that a man could be the victim of domestic abuse, was actively denied.
It was considered that women were never violent towards a male partner.
And indeed it is fairly rare isn't it?
@@bthomson .
No far from it, it appears to be rare partially because it has been played down or hidden and partially due to a lack of reporting and belief of those who do report it.
For example a BBC article on intimate partner murder did have a small paragraph stating men were the victims at a rate of 2 in every 7 but then went on to list 8 cases of women being the victims. to the casual reader, it would give the impression that only women were killed.
Another example is where a male MP was cautioned for assault in a domestic incident and was forced to resign. Remember that in order to receive a police caution, you have to admit guilt. A female MP was cautioned for assault and actual bodily harm, she only had to claim self defence and was given a position in the Shadow Cabinet.
If you are interested I suggest you google the Mankind Initiative, male victims of domestic and partner abuse.
Long time coming..remembering this... clearly, very strange then ..strange now!

Except she was still young and incredibly beautiful.
@@burprobrox9134 aparently not to him. She had 3 kids, was not a 21 year old show girl anymore. She got trapped in a fantasy world with that guy. I mean what point are you trying to make.
Wow Will Nill! I guess you are completely unfamiliar with Andy and his personal life, especially occurences during his teen years. I don't think he'd be classified as a simp.

I was a kid when this case was in the news. Thanks for explaining it 🐱
Excellent
I would love to see you do a breakdown of the case of Col. Philip Shue. That one is so baffling to me.
