I was crushed in a human stampede in the San Francisco Free Tibet Festival 1996. I had spent over half an hour working my way away from the stage before the Red Hot Chili Peppers came out, but a tidal wave of people rushed the stage when they did come on, and I was pressed twice as close toward the stage as I had been 45 minutes earlier. My shoes were ripped off my feet, one of my feet was broken, and I couldn't breathe which caused me to panic. When I looked to my sides there were other people with fear in their eyes, some were saying "I can't breathe." I've done a LOT of concerts, shows, and music festivals in my life, but that was the only time I was scared I was going to die. I can feel the terror just listening to you describe this. I cannot believe Travis Scott continued to perform... what is wrong with him??? Linkin Park once stopped a show just to make the guys in the pit pick a kid up who fell! "Safety first" the lead singer said, and that should always be the first concern of any artist.

Crazy. I was at that show. Rage Against the Machine finished there set on one stage and then everyone rushed over to see RHCP. I remember getting pushed every which way. There's nothing you can do except try to stay upright.

@@spencerzumwalt8957I was a huge Rage fan, so I'd gotten too close. I had no concept of how many people were laying in wait back in those Polo Fields. I knew the next set would be a problem, which is why I tried to get away!! I was VERY far from the stage when the rush happened. I swear, I was far enough I almost needed binoculars, but wow--there were still so many people in the fields I would have never imagined what was about to happen, and I never imagined they would sell that many tickets with zero crowd control. No one needs to die over a music show.

That must have been awful... I can't imagine being crushed while Under the Bridge was playing. It's like a blatant expression of life imitating art. You must have felt like their was "nobody out there," and "all alone," even as you were being crushed.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience. It holds a lot of important information about what it feels like to be in that situation. So hopefully ppl in stampedes can be a bit more conscious of what to look for in these situations to minimize damage. I also like how you added the part about Linkin Park. I seen the clip and they executed that very well. So it shows what an effective solution looks like as well.
Sounds rough for what you went through so I hope you are ok and supported while this story is being actively processed in your surroundings by others.

I had a seizure at a large festival (Warped Tour) in 2014, during The Story So Far’s set and within seconds the front man noticed something was wrong and stopped the set. He and the other musicians jumped off the set and followed me back into the medical tent to see if I was okay and they gave me some free merchandise. I've been to many general admission concerts through the 90s. In Detroit-- went to the HOLE concert in 98 at the state theater. Show starts, Courtney Love comes out and the crowd went nuts and we all were pushed forward. It was rough and scary. Some guy yelled at me that if I need out he'll boost me to crowd surf. I went up, over the crowd where Courtney Love saw me, grabbed my hand, pulled me up on stage and told me to stay on stage & I'll be alright... I spent the entire show on that stage back by the drummer. She pulled up quite a few girls out of the crowd. Swear... Courtney Love saved my life.

I went to a Cannibal Corpse and Dark Funeral concert several years back and the venue was clearly over max capacity due to the greed of the venue owner. The crowds did what crowds do at these concerts, but the fact that the venue was too full the ocean of people began to crush others between them and at the barricades. This is very common and somewhat expected, however during both sets when the artists saw it getting too bad they stopped whatever song they were playing and talked the crowd down and gave people a chance to go to the outskirts of the venue if they wanted out before they would play again. Goes to show this could have been prevented by the artist himself.

Stampede is a bit of a misnomer, this was more of a crowd crush. Crowd crushes aren't a new thing and rarely are the fault of individuals in the crowd, each individual does not have the power to move as an individual at that density. If you watch videos of it you can see that the crowd almost behaves as a fluid. The media has often reported the cause of crushes as a result of bad behaviour. Check out the Hillsborough disaster, the Who concert crush, any of the mecca disasters and you'll see it has a lot more to do with the layout of the event itself, lack of wave breakers, exits and crowd control. That being said, I do agree that if Travis Scott was aware of what was happening he is partially to blame for not stopping as early as possible, as we've seen other artists do in the past. The fact that Travis has been known to encourage fans to breech barriers, and has incited violence in the past makes this a bit more complicated. Another thing to keep in mind is that stage crews can, if necessary, cut the power to the stage and broadcast safety messages. I think there is a lot going on here and it will be interesting to see what comes out of the investigations, I hope you do a follow-up video when we learn more!

I agree OP. It is dangerous and misguided to place the onus of responsibility on the individuals in a crowd. We learned this at Hillsborough, where our disgusting UK press tried to blame the Liverpool fans for the horrific tragedy, which was a result of several other factors than "fan mentality". Travis needed to stop the show rather than carry on for a full hour, and the festival staff needed to listen to the attendees crying for help and cut the system. But the fans are not to blame. There will be enough survivor's guilt for many of the attendees as it is without implying a "certain type of fan" is to blame for this. Crushes happen in all sorts of different settings for a variety of reasons.

He saw medical staff trying to remove people from the crowd and heard people begging him to stop the set. He kept playing and egging on the crowd for 40 minutes after people began dying.
This is beyond civil suits. He needs to be charged with inciting a riot and held criminally responsible for all of the lives his concert has forever changed. Also, all the proceeds from that festival should be forfeited to the families of the victims. One fake "apology" video that he couldn't even be bothered to get sober to make isn't NEARLY enough.

I didn’t realize this was such a common thing. I attended a Beck concert in ‘97 in Athens GA and after the two opening bands were done playing, the crowd began to compress and, considering that me and my friends were at the front near the stage, we were completely helpless against the motion of the crowd, which became essentially like water. One person would stumble or fall and it would send 200-300 people careening across the venue. You were completely powerless to fight against it. I witnessed several people pass out, lots of girls and guys crying, etc. This was one of my first shows, so I thought that this was just how concerts were, lol. As soon as Beck took the stage, he refused to continue the show until everybody “got the fuck back”. He was even helping security pull people out of the front of the crowd himself, as some people were getting crushed against the stage. There was def a time where I thought I would die that night.

Travis seems to enjoy causing chaos and out-of-control behavior...inciting fans to beat people, inciting fans to crush forward to jump over barriers or onto the stage, inciting fans to jump off balconies...this incident sounds almost inevitable considering the pattern...eventually, a tragedy like this would occur. 😞

The video being showed all over the internet of him singing “yeah” is to the medics while they carry the guy out of the crowd. You can argue he should’ve stopped the show right then and there, but ppl pass out at festivals all the time due to drug use and dehydration so it isn’t uncommon. But the moment he heard there was a stampede of ppl breaking in, he should’ve stopped the concert, which I believe was before ppl started passing out.

One of the biggest problems is that over half of the crew was made of day laborers not trained professionals. This goes all the way down the line from medics, to security, to the stagehands. I’m a stagehand in Texas, and choose not to do the Astroworld show because the setup looked miserable. A lot of trained stagehands have left the industry, and their positions were filled by less experienced people. This goes for everyone. Security was just a bunch of guys who didn’t know anything about crowd control, and a bunch of them were there to have fun too. A lot of the medics didn’t know what to do, and they didn’t have enough medical equipment. When things went wrong NOBODY knew what to do, no nobody did anything. It’s was chos with no one able to get control and shut things down. Travis kept on performing, but someone should sent the message to cut the audio and stop the light show. Perhaps if there were more experienced production crew, maybe someone would’ve thought of that.

Travis has made DEFYING authorities' safety measures part of his celebrity identity. An example: when authorities limited attendance to lessen crowd density he tweeted out that the "ragers" would still be snuck in regardless. Since his reckless behavior has brought him money and fame, he doesn't believe it's possible he could have done anything wrong-- as is quite evident from the "apology" video where he talks about how HE sees it as just "giving his fans a good time". Except, of course, all the injured and dead ones he seems to think aren't his fault because he didn't "mean to" kill them.

Not changing a needle isn’t that big of an issue in this case, actually (still obviously not ideal, but not likely as bad as you’re probably thinking). Chances are they were injecting fentanyl, an opioid that gets injected into muscle tissue. The IV drugs they warn you about are injected into veins, which is where diseases such as hepatitis and HIV reside. This person, tho fucked up, wasn’t going around giving ppl blood diseases by injecting into their muscles ( you can’t just stab, say, heroin into a random person and have it have any effect, it has to be entered in a vein, which takes clear light, a specific angle, and time to figure out. It’s all but humanly impossible to properly walk up to someone and stab a needle correctly into their vein without them stopping you before you can do it, and when you miss a vein, opioids like heroin just create a small, somewhat painful abscess and have no effect otherwise on the body-meaning you won’t get high, pass out, or OD.)
Regardless, chances are they were using different needles. Syringes are small and only hold so much, if someone were stabbing multiple people and injecting them with drugs it’s way more likely that they had multiple needles on their person and were going around injecting folks than to assume they were reloading up the same syringe multiple times in a crowd that was so packed that folks were literally dying in it. There is all but a 0% chance of that being the case.

There’s been a huge trend where hip hop/pop artists encourage mosh pits at their shows and tell people to rage and go crazy in the crowd etc, I think it goes hand in hand with certain artists taking elements from punk and metal culture because they see it as cool.
But as someone who’s been to a lot of punk shows, it’s such a bad idea to encourage that in these huge festival crowds. They don’t get that punk/metal shows are typically SMALL and the crowds, while they can be rowdy, usually know exactly what they’re getting themselves into, and tend to help anyone who falls or gets seriously injured right away. Also the pit is an open space, so you can choose to enter it or not at your own will. And the bands are not up on these huge stages, there right near you, and can easily tell people to knock it off if anyone is being purposefully violent.
I tagged along to Rolling Loud with some friends in 2016, and I was really surprised that one rapper was on stage yelling at the crowd to “open up a pit” and saying “I’ll stop performing if I don’t see a pit open up, I wanna see everyone go crazy” and stuff like that. The crowd was huge and I immediately knew it was gonna be horrible and pushed myself out. My friends wanted to stay, which they regretted as they both ended up covered in dirt and bruises from being shoved to the ground and stepped on. I felt terrible for anyone small/short who couldn’t escape at all. Never went back to a big festival after that, it was so miserable.
These artists come off as insanely narcissistic, like they enjoy watching the chaos from up on a big stage and are reveling in the control they have over all these people, with no regard to the actual experience anyone on the ground is having. Live music is supposed to be FUN. Hopefully this tragedy will get this trend to finally stop .

When you're in a crown at a concert, no matter how big or small the venue is, the main performer comes on and people want to try to get as close as possible to the artist. Because of that it gets very hot and it's hard to breathe so eventually a person can pass out from it.

Travis has encouraged violence rage destruction for years and no one has done anything about it until *maybe* now.

EXACTLY. As many people that were there, HPD presence wasn’t very known. Or they wouldn’t have been able to storm that gate in the first place. What event planner throws something THIS huge and only hires Security?? Things can get dangerous QUICKLY. Meanwhile, half of the department probably worried about some baby ass block party down the street. Smh

Almost nobody stopped to help others who fell, they were just running to the stage. I think every person seen running there (there's a lot of videos) should be ASHAMED as f.

That is extremely irresponsible and reckless of him to encourage people to act in such dangerous ways! Really disappointing and very heartbreaking that this occurred. How could he still perform and encourage dangerous behavior and ignore the distress he encouraged. I would never do such a thing and in fact i would of immediately stopped the performance and do the responsible thing by informing the audience that I would end the concert right then and there if people continued to push forward killing 8 people. Performers like him need to understand that there are thousands and thousands of people, many whom are intoxicated and will act without considering or having awareness of the danger they present! Your analysis on not only Travis Scott but many of your other videos as well are incredibly interesting and I always learn something new. Thank you:)

As someone who attended astroworld, I don’t think that Travis really knew the severity of what was going on. He paused a couple of times to get passed out people help, but he probably should’ve stopped at the ambulance. Honestly, I didn’t even think much about the amount of people passed out, because it looked like the same amount that passed out the last time playboi carti performed in Houston. I think it was just too many people, especially with people breaking in. This has happened every astroworld, and a lot of other rap concerts. I was at nrg for carti on the narcissist tour like 2 weeks before this, and everyone broke the gate and beat up a security guard. Shits crazy

You're Spot On!! I feel the exact same way towards this guy's non action during his performance!! He was about the only person who could have deescalated his crowd of fans and his moral responsibility once he realized the tragedy unfolding during those shot 2 min and 3-4 sentences he spoke out to the crowd!! Police would not have any ability to control the crowd and if tried, would have escalated his fans into a full-blown riot due to many ppl who strongly despise the corruption of Police all throughout the US!! So very sad and preventable!! This happening at general admission concerts are not rare actually!! They happened for sure at the many of rock concerts I've attended in the 80s-90s mostly...though no one dies bc the groups performing on stage always stop the show and address their fans on any wrongdoings they see...and remind everyone to take care of others around them!! It's their responsibility to make sure their fans are safe from these sorts of tragedies...unless he's going for the publicity things like this bring them...but, this was WAY out of line n hopefully ENDED his career instead!!

This reminds me of a portion of Don Delillo's "Mao II" which describes a historicized soccer game, the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989. Mao II is all about crowds and their effects on our society, and how crowds have shaped our lives and reactions. The individual is essentially lost among the crowds, as the multitudes tend to squash our humaness if not kept in check.

“He paused multiple times! It isn’t his fault”
Yes. He paused to acknowledge the danger and then continued knowing the danger. Travis could have used the pause to say the classic mom line…”If you don’t all start acting right, I’m going to shut this concert down!”
He didn’t though because he either doesn’t care, liked the panic and chaos, or he is too stupid to understand how crush’s happen during events. In any of these scenarios I don’t think he should be allowed to perform until the necessary precautions are taken and lessons are learned. He has had many chances to improve the safety of his fans at shows but has instead endangered them time and time again. Now it’s not an issue of bodily harm but of fatality…Completely inexcusable.
There are many tweets in Travis’s defense saying that this is an issue of how popular he is and how many people were in attendance. Wrong. This event was under-attended and hopefully all of his future shows will be too. I have always been a fan of Travis Scott’s music but I won’t support him after this

I have never heard of this 'artist' before. What happened to those people at the concert is heartbreaking. He clearly doesn't care about his fans, all he and his team are worried about is money. Many performers have stopped their concerts when there has been a chance that things might get out of hand. I cannot believe that any sane performer would continue their show when they see an ambulance in the crowd. I'm disgusted by this person.
