Another way I prevent mold that I didn't discuss in this video is the fact that I use a sterile potting mix which ensures no mold is in my growing medium! 🌱👍🏼 Cheers
Hi Donny, I really enjoy your videos. Can you please approve my membership on your Facebook page. I am in the learning process at the moment and I am getting ready to start growing micro greens as a business here in Costa Rica I really believe the market is open with a lot of opportunity!! I look forward to watching more of your videos.
I am a commercial wheatgrass grower. I agree with everything in your video. I recently added an ozone generator from Roving Blue (OzoPod 10) and now have ozonated water available 24/7. It is so incredibly easy to use....very safe to use.....and.....increases our germination and growth rate too. Our wheatgrass taste GREAT, juiced or raw.
I've been growing wheatgrass commercially in greenhouses for 33 years in Seattle. The primary mold issue is caused by the seed itself. If you're dealing with a batch of badly infected seed, no environmental factor (temperature, humidity, airflow, sanitation) that the grower controls will stop mold from developing. In the case of badly infected seed, the only seed treatment (believe me, I've tried them all) that will stop the mold from growing is a chemical fungicide (Fung-onil by Bonide). But I cannot use chemical fungicides since I grow organically. So the only solution is to find a good seed source. Once a good seed source is found, then the environmental factors come into play. In the case of wheatgrass, I've found that airflow makes zero difference. It's a temperature issue. The higher the temperature the greater the mold development. The ideal growing temperature is 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Seattle doesn't have high humidity like the states east of the Rockies, so I've never had to deal with the humidity factor.
I agree with that temperature. Lower temps are definitely better for wheatgrass and preventing mold. Look in the descriptions of my videos, you will find a link to something called "Zerotol." you can sanitize your contaminated seeds with it even for organic farming because it is OMRI listed. Hope this helps!
Today is my 4th day of growing microgreens, I’m growing just 1 tray to understand the growth process, found mould and I think I overwatered it and also kept the tray where there wasn’t much air flow, sprayed some peroxide solution for now, gonna change the environment and see how it works out, thanks for the information! Any helpful suggestions are welcome :)
Hi Im having trouble with mold during germination stage, on the day 2 or 3 I get always mold in beets, did you watered them every day or do nothing after its completly germinated?
Hey Donny, I have started my journey of microgreens recently and my trays caught mold.. the temperature is hot and humid and no air flow.. but mu question is if I use fans for airflow and air con for temperature control should they be operation throughout the germination and growth phase?? How do I time its on and off condition??
Thank You for the information. Just started planting last week both tray became moldy so upset. I will try again soon. I believe I water it much and don't think I needed the heat mat.
Hi Donny, regarding good air flow, do you keep fans turned on 24 hrs 7 days a week in your room, or are they turned on at selected times? Does the fan cause the grow medium to dry out too quickly?
Oh my gosh, we're getting driven insane with mold, or something, causing bad spots on our arugula, amaranth (these have been temperamental since we've started growing them several months ago, and we understand that they're easily susceptible), but now even our broccoli, which had always grown hearty and strong since starting over a year ago. The spots are random, and spread like wildfire once they start. We dig out the bad spots, but new ones form. They can start anywhere from 2-7 days after planting, and the majority of the bad spots form after the germination stage, while under lights. On top of this, they're all growing smaller than usual, and haven't been drinking as much. One idea is that excess mold may have come in on a bad batch of sunflower seeds (had to buy from a different company and these seeds suck! Like a third of the typical germination/yield, but the mold doesn't really seem different than usually can come with sunflower. Could this contaminate other crops if it did come in on the sunflower??). For the fourth week in a row, I'm going to have to tell one of our restaurants that we can't fulfill their order. :-( We've made a few changes with the room since we began, but have brought everything back to how we started (except have one more fan and a carbon filter, so we'd think that is better), but still can't figure out why this is happening. Every week it seems worse! We're sanitizing trays with the same sanitizer you use. We make our own soil, and wonder if the peat moss could be different? No video on UA-cam, by anyone has been able to give us any ideas that we haven't already heard/tried. I don't have Facebook to join your group. Donny, or anyone have ANY ideas? THANK YOU!
Greetings from Greece, can you suggest something besides food grade hydrogen peroxide? It seems I cant find any in our countries market :/ Bleach is something I don't want to spray in my plants as well. Thanks
So let’s say at the bottom of my tray I have like 1-2 seeds with mold spores but I cut, rinse the greens in a vinegar solution, and rinse very well- eatable or not?
I use shallow trays, no higher than the thickness of the pads. This prevents over watering as well. Heat is a huge problem for me, upwards of 90, so I keep it dry and lots of circulation. I got mold on a new pad and had to pitch everything and clean down with bleach. I am making this my one and only time it happens to my crops. Fingers crossed. I am increasing circulation to blow directly on the trays through a HEPA filter. I am building tents around the racks and keeping a positive air flow. Thanks for sharing. I am making this required watching by my team.
Hi Donny just subcribed to your channel I'm a sunflower grower i want to add growing sunflower microgreen to my business because people just kept asking me about this at my table my question is after doing a little research what has me concerned is salmonella how do you prevent this from happening i just watched your mold prevention episode ...Thanks
Hey thanks for the sub! Your research has misled you. There is no difference growing microgreens or growing baby lettuce. If your methods of farming are safe, then your farm products will be safe
Hi Donny, I have a coupe of questions on this topic. One is, do you know what type of mould is commonly found on microgreens? Also, when should you throw a crop away? I recently had a tray that had about 25% mould growth (within 2 days of germination). I was able to get it under control by spraying with a solution of hydrogen peroxide (food grade) and water, but is it still a safe product?
If the mold stays near the base of the plants where the soil is and you can harvest above and around the mold, that's fine. The mold depends on what spores are in your grow room. What variety are you having the mold trouble with?
@@DonnyGreens Thx Donny - it's sunflowers (black oilseed). The mold seems to have cleared up (after spraying with H202 solution twice daily for 4 days) and the crop is under light now, but I worry that it won't be safe for consumption. Are there guidelines around this? I've watched some tutorials that say you should throw out the crop or that they need to be cooked before eating.
You can cut above the mols as long as it is manageable. The sunflowers are tricky - sometimes the seeds are weak and start breaking don because they don't have much life-force. I'm glad you were able to clear it up though. I wouldn't worry about it - as long as the mold cleared up and didn't end up on the product at harvest time, you're all set!
Hi Donny Is there any way to do a live communication with you to show you my systems and how they can be bettered please. I’m growing commercially in South Africa and think there is a lot you could fix in my systems?
Hi, when you water your microgreens, have you measured how much you apply? For all 3 stages: misting before germination, top watering and then bottom watering after there's a canopy. I'm growing my first set of trays and am flying a little blind on this! Thanks Donny.
Fly blind young grasshopper, this is a skill you will develop over time! It is probably the most important skill in microgreens farming. I don't measure any water - I simply know how much to put in based on how the plants and soil look, how heavy the tray is, the stage of growth they are at, etc. I know this wasn't the answer you are looking for but my advice to you is to be very attentive, and learn this watering skill as quick as possible 🌱💚
What can I use to disinfect trays for the wheatgrass. We have been growing some for the farm. But I have come across some problems . They are not growing as fast as when we started, and have a lot of ingrown spots. Do you have any advice on what I could do to change this. TIA.
I am kalpana sudarsan ,and I am very interested in this microgreens business. But I have no knowledge about microgreens. How can I start this business. Could you please explain me about. And I want to know that I need to take any classes about microgreens agriculture. Thanks and have a good day.
Hey Donny, its seems like the more fans I have going, the more some of the microgreens dry out and fall over? The fans are not directly on the trays - set up to just bounce air off of the ceilings and walls. We water typically twice a day.

Hi Donny thanks again for all the great info. I have a few questions. First, in some of your videos you mention using peat moss mixed with Azomite but you don't specify the amounts/ratios. Also do you have a preferred peat moss? Also I know you recommend the Sunblaster Nanotech T5 combos that run around $100 for two. I see several other people like Nate recommend the Barrina LED T5 which are a fraction of the price. Have you tried the Barrina ones before and if so obviously you feel the Sunblasters are worth the additional cost. Thoughts? Thanks!!
Hey Tony, i never mentioned anything about Azomite. I used ProMix MP Organik which is a blend of pete moss, perlite, and mycorrhizae. I use sunblasters because they are the highest quality light ive found. I use one light per shelf because of their quality. Less electricity usage from my 1 light vs 3 barrinas, not to mention my lamps are made for growing and are full spectrum

Hey Donny, Thanks for the video. Do you think airflow matters much in germination? I've got some mold developing on my sunflower seeds after just under 2 days in germination. I think I made a mistake by not drying out my seeds after soaking for 12 hours, and by having too much water in my hemp mats when I did plant them. I've got them stacked 4 high with two bricks holding them all down. I turned the fan off as I figured there was no need for airflow when they're compressed anyways and probably not benefiting from circulating air. I've also got about 65% humidity and have a humidifier coming to bring that down. It's getting cold here in Canada at 17c in my grow room, so a heater is coming as well. All my other seed varieties (radish, wheatgrass and speckled pea) seem to be coming along nicely, however. I've sprayed them with food safe 3% hydrogen peroxide as I've read that's a good solution to the mold problem. What are your thoughts? Cheers!

Wow what a bundle of principles you put into that short video. I am 74 and wish I heard this before you were born, for my wheatgrass. Thanks
Haha no problem Bill!! I guess i'm a little later to the part but the party continues nevertheless!!
Great
Thank you!
Awesome video Donny. Thanks for this and for all of your work!
Do you have any recommendation for credit card processing companies?
I use Square for all my payment processing via recurring invoices. Stripe is also good. I recommend making your website on Shopify and processing payments through there. What are you currently using?
We are a startup. Have not selected processor yet.
Why do you use Shopify?
@@williamconrad4292 I don't use shopify for this business just yet but will be moving to that platform in the future. It's the goto for ecommerce websites, easy functionality, intuitive, high quality.
