I just ignored rule no. 1 and mixed potting soil with the coconut coir and ruined my pea shoots microgreens! it was covered in mold, now I know the reason thank you so much Jag! you are the reason I have started growing microgreens at home!
Great Tips 👍 Though, I've been growing microgreens in potting soil and also universal substrate and I've never had a problem with mould. You will get mould on everything if you overwater it, even on coconut coir. The aeration tip is the key 🙂 Thank you for very informative content
This was an awesome video. You broke it down to the most basic needs! You stayed to the point and described everything very clearly. I'm quite confident that you could show this to an 8 year old, they would be able to successfully grow some micro greens. Bravo. You put a lot of work into your videos. Now to grow some micro greens!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yay...Jag you're back. Nice to hear from you again. Another great vid, love microgreens and been wanting to start growing. Hope the farm is going well for you. Im guessing it has been and you're super busy hence long time between vids. Stay safe and healthy. 🙏👍🍃
Some good ideas. Ive had mold a couple times now. So cut back on the water. Only every other day and spray ..... Maybe only 3 days of darkness and put into the light. Airflow I could try too.
Very informative video. A couple of questions: How long do they need to be under weight and in the dark? And if using a growing light, how many hours a day?
@@cannotbeshaken7889 I literally get a mason jar and some lids with holes and put the seeds in the jar for 24 hours. Then each day I pour water into the jar and then drain after about 1 minute. Repeat and rinse each day and the seedlings sprout.

Thank you for this video. I have a question. What do you think of hemp mats in place of coconut coir? I have had great success with hemp mats that fit in 10 x 20 trays. But I have never tried coconut coir. Maybe the coconut is better? Maybe the coconut is less expensive? What is your opinion? And I am asking the readers here as well. Thank you!
👌😊...THANK YOU! I didn't know what I was doing when I started growing Wheatgrass with your Wheatgrass video 7 Months ago....then I started MIcrogreens using potting soil stinky, Now after this Vid I proudly sport COCO COIR!!!! noticed a difference immediately..
I have had success with microgreens thanks to your video, Jag! Regarding coco coir, once I am done harvesting the shoots, can I reuse it or should I compost it? I don't have a compost bin. Can I just put the used coco coir in my backyard/garden?
good information. I have everything I need right here and now to grow greens using this method. Shall be doing this today. I started some last week in little trays lined with medium sized hydroton clay pebbles on a masterblend solution...just experimenting I'll also try the paper towel method ..never know until we try.....I do like the coco coir idea, just feel that the single use coir will become costly. Putting a weight on the trays...Ive not heard of that and best of all...the "why" we should. Totally makes sense. All in all, great info, love your explanation. cheers
I wish I watched this video earlier, today I bought soil to grow my microgreens indoor. Nobody explained the possability of fungus growing from soil. thank you.
great video, lots of useful tips. question: when do we remove the clay pot weights covering the seeds trying to sprout? i am looking forward to getting my microgreen game on.
It depending any mold or fungus was in it. If it even happened once throw it out. If a plant never germinated, you can still use it. If you pull sprouts out you can still use it. I generally don't use it afterwards if it isn't the things listed above because it's just tedious to take out all the roots. If the coco fiber is consistently wet I wouldn't reuse it. The tips o listed I generally use for normal planting in pots with humidity domes, not hydroponics or micro greens. You should add cinnamon to your fiber so mold will be discouraged from growing. Hydrogen peroxide can kill anything organic living in the soil like mites, mold, fungus gnats but it will also kill beneficial organisms that eat mites, mold, etc. Hope this helps
I don't understand the part about the pressure and darkness from the plant pot helping the roots grow, but you need light. That must be in sequence, but I didn't hear anything about when to switch.
Thanks for the video! Great tips !!! Does anyone know how to solve the problem with small white flies that attack my micro greens, but without chemistry !! Thank you guys!
Where do l buy coconut coir in the UK? I have been using paper towels, wet it and sprinkle the seeds on it and then cover with cling film. Thank you Jag. When do you remove the weight?
1 more criteria. Temperature. If its too hot & humid it will experience stunted growth. What I observe was on day 3 to 7 it did not shoot up taller. Everybody was showing their tray of microgreen. So I took the tray & left it outside the house & it shot to 14 inches much to everyone surprise. Harvesting was 3x.
My lentil and pea microgreens are turning brown at the ends instead of green when I put them to the light. I am doing everything step by step. They sprouted fine and formed a good root system. After that, I opened them to natural light and started putting water on the bottom. Instead of turning green, they look almost burned. I wasted three trays of microgreens already. I am not sure why. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

But instead of a backyard with rich soil plants flowers worms and butterflies.....Our backyard is now a slab of concrete. I think I understand micro greens a bit better now. We have a something here in 🇬🇧 UK we call it Cress. Would you all call that a micro green? Thankyou love watching your channel 🙏🏻👏😎
Yes cress as you know it is a microgreen. More like still a sprout though. Lots of seeds/beans can be eaten as sprouts like the cress you're thinking of. 🙂
Lilac Lilly No problem. 🙂 You can bulk buy cress seeds (and all sorts of seeds or beans) and grow them the same way you would cress. You can use fresh cotton pads to try it out before forking out for coir. Get a sandwich Tupperware box or something similar. Put in a layer or two of cotton pads - like those cheap makeup remover pads - pour in just enough water to make them moist - sprinkle your seeds in and put the lid on. Put the box, now your mini greenhouse, into a cupboard for three days. Take it out, remove the lid and put the box somewhere warm with light. Add water as needed. The seeds will use their own energy stores to grow so you don't need fertilizer. You can sterilize your cotton pads if you want by microwaving them while wet then letting them cool down first to avoid possible mould. 💜 Not strictly necessary that bit but you can. The cotton or coir is really there as an anchor for the roots and to keep enough moisture around without drowning the seeds. Have fun! x

Tell me more. I want the cheapest way to still grow great microgreens. I'm poor financially.
i use coco coir and SEA-90 trace minerals, so you get the added trace minerals in your food...
microgreens do grow straight and fall over. I may try this again. Good advice. Thank you!
I have several packs of seeds on my table waiting to be planted...Message received. I’m going to do it now.
Jag! Good to see you again!
Very informative video. A couple of questions: How long do they need to be under weight and in the dark? And if using a growing light, how many hours a day?
2 days under weight and dark, at least 8 hours of light afterwards.

great video, lots of useful tips. question: when do we remove the clay pot weights covering the seeds trying to sprout? i am looking forward to getting my microgreen game on.
I usually remove the weight after 2 or 3 days. Beyond that, the seeds start getting moldy. But that is with regular potting soil.
I was wondering the same thing.

My question as well
Jag, thank you. I get so much from your videos! Question: Can coconut coir be reused? If so, roughly how many times?
It depending any mold or fungus was in it.
If it even happened once throw it out.

You need light after seeds germinate, about 2 to 3 days after adding the seeds.
