Thank you as always for the great advice. We started our Microgreens business 7 months ago and we are up to about 40-50 trays a week now and honestly cleaning trays is one of the most time consuming things we do using the typical dump, rinse, soak in bleach water and then rinse again. I always felt this was over kill but we just followed how we were taught. Can’t wait to try this method thanks again
Hi Donny, since you asked about selling , the Philippine microgreens market is basically new. I was successful in growing microgreens outside in a shaded area. I havent tried selling, but i also dont know how. It seems i have to develop a market for it. I plan to sell it to people who are health conscious like people doing keto or to people that needed extra nutrition like people with cancer. How do i develop such a new market here ?
try chlorine dioxide instead of bleach you just put 1 tab into the sink and drop the trays in. you can drink the water with the chlorine dioxide in it with out any health problems and it kills more bacteria then bleach. it rinses easily and even if you watered the plants with that water it wouldn't hurt them.
Donny you continue to inspire me to care for my microgreens day after day. The people would love a step by step process on how to grow your greens, especially your peas!!
I've planning my growspace, and in my project there's a room just for cleaning trays. I cannot put in the air some particles of sanitizer, cause that particles certainly are going to get the plants, water or something else (I'm a former piercer lately, so I'm little obsessed with sanitation). With a closed room, put them for some minutes in a bath solution, then rinse it off with a pressure machine, and it's done. It's not the faster way to do it, but for me sounds the more secure way to do it, and show this care to my clients, they tend to trust even more on my product and work.
If it’s peroxide it’s not gonna hurt the plants many use peroxide vinegar mix to spray some seeds like sunflower to prevent mold. But I feel the cleaner the trays are the better even if they get a 3 step sanitation sink setup
Hey donnie, hows it going brother. Peace and blessings from deep south Louisiana. I've been soaking up info for weeks trying to start my microgreens business, I'm almost ready to start, your videos and others, have helped me understand which direction to go....thanks mannnnn peace
Have you considered putting together a worm bin to recycle the growing medium? Worm castings could be a great addition to the medium, full of nutrient and health promoting humic acid (for both plants and humans). Or you could just sell the castings separately, or use them in your garden.
Hey Donny, awesome videos. Would you be willing to share some info on the lighting that you use to grow microgreens, such as type of lighting, length of bulbs, lighting cycle, distance from plants?
Hi Donny, Right now I use a brush and water to clear off both sides of all trays, then I dip them in a bleach/water mix to sanitize, very boring and time consuming. I'm small scale, doing maybe 40 trays every other week in the winter months, 60 trays a week in prime time farmer's market months. Your method seems like a nice solution. Once a month I'll plan to scrub them down though. Thanks for the info. Stay healty.
No problem thanks for watching and for commenting! You stay healthy as well. Hopefully the methods I use will help as you scale and have to take care of more trays!
I've been soaking them in bleach water in a storage bin for about 20 minutes then wipe them down and rinse them in hot water. It's quite time consuming, but that's the only way I've found to remove the root systems. Your comment about outdoor farming is correct for sure. However I fear that the more fragile crops like lettuce mix and brassicas are more susceptible to mold in my grow space, I just want to be sure to grow healthy products.
Definitely smart thinking! Thanks so much for your comment. This definitely sounds a bit time consuming, hopefully my tactics will help a bit, maybe you can incorporate a ix of the two methods? When i get roots sticking (sunflowers), I remove them simply by running my finger down the grooves with a paper towel when dumping initially. Hope this helps!
@@DonnyGreens thanks Donny! That's a good idea wiping trays after harvest with a paper towel. I'll give that a shot in my process as well as the hydrogen peroxide process.
My current practice after the leftovers go to the chickens is to pressure wash and to bleach dunk for soil trays and a h202 spray for most bottom trays. Back to the vid.
I remember from the days of sanitizing plastic baby containers/cups it was advised Not to scrub plastic with a brush or anything abrasive, as the scratches create even more places for bacteria etc. to attach and hide oo on your plastic. So I use a cloth or sponge on plastic. Nothing scratchy
There are some growers that dump out the coco coir brush off the roots and replant in the same tray the same day that have never had any issues for years. So I see how all this overkill is really unnecessary but to each their own.
I wash out the trays with water then spray and soak 15min in a water mixed with hydrogen peroxide! I’m new so still finding the best process for me as an apartment small grower! For now!
@donnygreens I got that exact sprayer and it stopped working after about a month. This is the 3rd sprayer I've killed. I'm guessing I should flush the zerotol out after use or something? I think maybe (since it's acidic) it's damaging the sprayer somehow???
Nature has it's own checks and balances that doesn't exist in artificial grow spaces so you can't really compare outdoor and indoor growing in that sense. You really get to know how tricky contamination control is when it comes to growing mushrooms indoors vs outdoors.
I work at a farm that atm brings out about 160~ trays a week and we rinse out the trays in a bath to get rid of dirt and root systems rememnets, then transfer them to a bath of hydrogen peroxide at a 3% dilution and let them sit for a few minutes and then just let them dry, it works well but does take me a day of the week worth of work
Water spritzing, diluted hydrogen peroxide solution, but your main concern is having proper ventilation and circulation. Temperature is a big contributor. Air that isn’t constantly moving is going to give you mold every time.
what other equipment aside from trays should be sanitized? I'm actually doing my first sanitizing for my trays today, hopefully I'll be able to start my first round of seeds in a few days once the lights and seeds come in
From a cleaner's perspective - sanitizers are more effective when dirt and debris have been cleaned off (with soap and water). Personally, I prefer to do both for my own peace of mind, and do not find it time consuming.
Hi Donny. Starting a 1 rack farm over next week or so. I appreciate you and your content. Question. Are you holding one tray or two trays when sanitizing with the Zerotol spray? I heard you say tray set so I am thinking 2 trays. Just as they were when growing. Thank you again.

Anyone just try dipping the trays in potassium metabisulphite
Why not use chlorine?! Why use fancy chemicals?!

Zerotol link is bad
Sanitizer literally cannot work on a dirty surface. This video is dissapointing and potentially harmful. If you clean them first, then yes... great process. Indoor gardening and outdoor is a completely different ballgame.
Its been working just fine for me for years!
you can't sanitize a dirty surface. If there is soil still on the trays you are wasting your time.
works for me!
