Thanks for the review! Much appreciated!
Very informative - thanks Curtis!
Big like from Spain. Your channel is great, your explanations are great.
Thanks for mentioning the search
Been growing micros for three years. Funny that your top three least favorites are identical to mine and others I've talked to. Beets and chard are beautiful but such a pain to clean. Same with arugula though it has such a great flavor. And thanks for calling out Johnny's. Great people to deal with but the prices are just insane. Your book is a great read and love the videos. Thanks for what you do.
I think the stacking builds a stronger stem, also the pushing the seed into the medium motivates the germination.
Nasturtium shoots can be harvested multiple times over a long time period like several months.
I get my sunflower from mvseeds and other recent seeds that I grow is from johnny but the quality is very high and shipping is fast and cheap.
I'm working on a video that I will put on a local cable tv station, I'll let you know when it goes live. I have shot lot's of video, now I have to put it together.
I have some struggles with very fine seed to grow all the way to harvest, so it really isn't worth my time and space to continue to throw it in the compost. though then it may do very well in the compost.
thanks
Excellent video... Thanks 👍
Man I just want to take the time and say that you are a abundance of help.I do not have that much space as I live in an apartment, so I’m using mason jar’s to grow micro greens and herbs etc.
As far as second cuts, I run the tray soil through a soil shaker. The roots (such as they are) I give to my BSFL. DIY project, the soil shaker. Does take some sweat. The BSFL incubator is also DIY. I cycle back through organic certified soil from my local municipal government. I've learned that with three passes I need to remediate the recycled dirt with minerals. Mix them with the castings from my BSFL.
I started buying Johnny's from an older video you did. Will check out the other folks
Thanks Boss!
LoL. Our Christmas Cactus blooms are identical to yours on the shelf. Thx and Happy Holidays from North Bay, ON.
What kind of lights do you use and where do you get them ? Love the channel. Thank you.
We cut amaranth also, yield was crappy on them and for us growth wasn’t as uniform tray to tray as it is with the other stuff. I’m really surprised to hear you say that about beets though that’s one we really like. Thanks Curtis.
It could be temperature or different variety of seed you use.

I had another question for you. How are you watering your microgreens and how often, considering your flats have drainage holes and I've read its always better to bottom water than over the top to avoid mold buildup. Thank you!
So much info.🤯
Tons of free, well researched and we intentioned microgreen advice on Curtis channel, thanks bro!
ATBricks.com BAM!
Hi Curtis, I'm wanting to start growing micros and curious about a few things... How would you control a nat/fly problem organically? How do you keep rodents out of your greenhouse/grow space. Finally, do you only recommend growing in soil, or would you consider or recommend something like coco coir or hemp mats? Love watching your videos. Thank you so much for all your work!
In Mark Braunstein's book, Micro Green Garden, Mark quotes Gilles Arbour and talks about buckwheat micro greens being toxic and dangerous for human consumption. He says buckwheat contains the pink coloured toxin fagopyrin. He says you can eat buckwheat sprouts though, because they are soaked and rinsed repeatedly.
I've been growing micro greens for a few months now & we have found issues w/ the same seeds too. We've tried soaking beet & Swiss chard seeds in warm water for a few hours before seeding in trays helps a little bit to shed their seed coats, but any other tips would be welcome! We love how these ones look and would love to grow more of them!
A fav of mine (although, not so much for taste) is Crimson clover. It is very resilient and easy-ish to grow. Wasabi radish smells divine when harvesting, but can be temperamental and prone to mildew. Generating enough interest, and demand all winter long, to justify the hydro bill is our first hurdle to overcome. But hopefully we'll get enough ppl hooked on them this next spring/summer to make it work!
Check out Thunder Acres trays. They're amazing!
I feel like replacing some of your fans with HEPA filter fans could alleviate some of your growing woes with the more fragile strains. Fungal spores and the like float around in the air pretty much ubiquitously, everywhere.
Mumms does not have anything on their website love your content it is great!!!
I've looked and relooked through your videos where you talk about a product you add (some kind of nutrient solution or mold/fungus eliminator) to your microgreens and can't find it anywhere. You quickly mentioned it at the end of a video stating that it was about $300/bottle but worth the cost since you don't get any mold problems on your sunflower microgreens anymore. Can you reference this product again please? Thanks!
Curtis I'm using the bootstrap farmer 10 20 trays from amazon and love them. I wish I hadn't wasted money on other brands before. a bit pricey but cheaper than paper pot. buying them in 10 packs they are $5 each. probably cheaper in larger packs .
Can you do a video on how you wash the trays???
Super good. Thank you!
If someone had a small operation, what is your opinion regarding adding some peroxide to the water to help with fungus problems?
I do it to sterilize the seed before planting and we spot spray sometimes. I've never seen it done with watering the whole lot though.
Lov dis dude. Micro green Jesus
what did you do with the soil after harvest? compost or re-use again?
How do you know how many seeds to plant per flat? Do you have a document availible with the different seeds and their corresponding weights per 10 x 20?
Nice greeny ! :)
What do you do with the soil after the microgreens are harvested ???? do you reuse them ??
How do you deal with the annoying sunflower hull sticking problem?
I put together a huge well planned out shelving / revenue response. Hit the wrong key. Lost it all. No worries it helped me organize my thoughts. But I will go back to my premise to ask you Curtis.
Why not use simple five shelf plastic shelf you can stack at least three deep in your greenhouse. In mine a $400 investment is a 30 foot stand at five shelves each and each shelf holds three standard trays.
Your greenhouse is compacted but I still think you could go for four deep. You have a lot of heavy wood stands that seem to hamper your maximal sun exposure. Every 30 foot run is five shelves per stand per 12 equals 180 trays. Four times is 720 trays.
Given your greenhouse design you'd probably need to rotate. But is sure as heck would easily triple what I see in the video as max capacity.
What do you use to disinfect the trays please?
I want to start a small part time microgreens operation in order to build up revenue for a larger urban style farm. What is a good amount of seed to start with for three different verities of microgreens. Also do u wash and spin microgreen? Haven’t seen that in a video. Thx
What brand of soil do you use?
Do the micro greens have to be grown in soil? I was wondering if I could grow them in the coconut liner.
What is the recommendation as far as growing organic or non-organic microgreens? Just like fruits, there are certain fruits that doesn’t need to be organic and is not harmful.
Hi, Curtis. I'm Daniel from Puerto Rico, I'm making my first steps on microgreens, I'll like to know how much do you water your microgreens (times a day), also if you water the seeds in the germination process (first 2-3 days) thanks! And great job, your videos are the best!
Also, if you water your microgreens when you stack them
Would love to see a video on your santization procedures. What do you have in place should the CFIA come knocking?
+Christopher Mercer if the CFIA come knocking, they ask permission to come on the property. You don’t need to give it to them.
Christopher Mercer what is up with the CFIA? Why would they come around?
When do you introduce the microgreens to light?
Watched this twice and I still seem to have missed why you don't use a seed germinator for microgreens. Can someone please tell me?
Curtis,do you ever make it out to the west coast?
Super excited to hear that Mumm's has more reasonable sunflower seeds than here in the US, cost is primary reason we have not grown them. However, if you go to their website and click the option at the top from Canada to down here, the price doubles? 1kg=$11.49 but 2.2lbs=$22.97 Thinking it must be an error so I have sent an email to clarify. Thank you sir for the much more cost effective option.
Heard back from Mumm's and it seems that those are the correct prices for us down here because of shipping and importing costs. Kinda bummed but understandable.
Fair point, I guess I just got caught up in the CA/US price increase... Johnny's price is ridiculous, I may try Todd's Seeds out of Michigan this year and see how that goes. We have not scaled up yet but considering adding micros this year.
I don’t understand are the seeds regular seeds from a normal plant just harvested early or a special seed bred to be tiny? I’m really interested in these so many people in my community are sick.
Whats the temp. in that room?
With the paper pot flats, I have noticed they work great for 7-10 day micros. Anything over 10 days, the roots grow through the holes, then end up dying and killing the micros. For stuff I plan to grow for 2-3 weeks like Basil and some of the mustards I've gone back to the 1020's.
I am really looking forward to your Micro course in hopes it'll help expand what I am offering. Locally I've found there isn't much interest in the Big Three that you grow. I'm being asked for Basil, Fennel, and colorful brassicas. Just a different locality really, not an issue. I agree with you that Beets are a PITA, same as Fennel. I'll continue to offer it mainly because I'm a smaller production and have the time to comb it daily.
How do you find growing the basil? Thinking of trying it next year...
matthew clifford it’s not too tough. Density is key though. If you want to grow larger plants, which is usually desired, plant less dense. If you can sell the 7-10 size you can grow more dense. Keep air moving and use a 10x20 tray.
Thanks for the reply Ryan. I read you can get a second cut but also read basil germinates in 2 waves if you keep it in dark initially so I think that may explain the second cut "rumour". I was thinking of going with the lower density approach, longer growth period as seed is expensive in Ireland where i am based and iam eager to max return on that cost. What would you consider a good low density by weight for a 10x20?
Also what's a realistic yield range in your experience? I have seen some wide estimates from 50-450 g a tray?
matthew clifford try 12-15 grams and see what you think.
Wow Curtis, arugula is my best seller. I have no problem with fungus down here in southern Indiana. I know what you mean about beets! They are the worst thing I've ever tried to harvest!
Everything is subjective to personal experience. It's never been good for me.
1. Why do we stack microgreens? Saving space/flats
2. Can you get a 2nd cut from microgreens? Yes. Yield is less though
3. Microgreens course? Delayed but on its way by 1st week of March!
4. Where do we get our seeds? Mumm’s Sprouting Seeds in Canada. Cheapest and good quality
5. Any microgreens bad to grow? 3 worst are Beets, Chard & Arugula
Awesome vid thank you 🙌😊
What is your opinion of growing micro-greens under LED lights on wet coconut coir with no nutrients or soil? One of the purposes would be to market them to chefs as live plants only instead of harvested plants to skirt nuisance food regulations.
Whatever works man.
You’re incredible, Curtis. The rock star of microgreens!
For harvesting the microgreens do you recommend using the quick cut greens harvester
He uses a very very sharp chef knife. Check out his other videos on microgreens.
Hey Curtis. How often do you wash/disinfect your equipment (trays, shelving, ...) in your microgreen production?
Flats that are used for sunflower get sterilized every cycle. All flats get washed every cycle as well.
How do you sterilize them?
Hi Curtis, any recommended brand for organic seeds in Europe? Thank you.
José Macedo look at microgreen-shop.com
@@jessicaweymann any shops on english.
Darko Djordjevic 🤔 Ahh yes in UK they sell bio seeds but I forgot the names, you can check in internet
Hai Curtis I am from India are you not producing mustard microgreens using flats.
I also prefer to stack. One small scale trick I came up with this year is sanitizing my flats in the dishwasher vs using bleach or food grade hydrogen peroxide. Feels like a lot less work. If you are harvesting a dozen or more flats at a time it probably wouldn't work for you though.
+Sean Puskas that’s a great idea. With the amount we have, we’d need a dedicated dishwasher cause there’s no way my wife would let me bring those in the house.
Sean but you only do the washing in the dishwasher with water, right?
Eminew It depends on how many I am doing. I don't use heated dry, and they are no worse off then doing a bleach water soak.
Dear Curtis and everyone! I consider life with microgreens. I read that a lot of those gems and shoots give around twice the amout of yield than the amount of invested seed. Say 100g of peas will give 200g of pea shoots. That seems quite profitable to me. I wonder what happens to this calculation if the production of the seed is added. I mean obviously you buy seeds from mommys. I just wonder is it even more profitable to have a seed production for all these varieties of sprouts on side? what effort does that involve, is it worth it or is it better to focus purely on growing the last product in the chain. what are the pros and cons and so on... it is probably different for many plants because they give different amounts of seeds and use different kinds of procreation. If you consider this I wonder if it changes something on your list of "the three most profitable microgreens". thank you felix
Do you get hygiene inspectors visiting your farm? Maybe a good topic for a video to talk about that side? thanks
He's covered that in prior videos..
+MynameisEGIS no. They’re not allowed on my property unless they pay me ;)
Hey I've tried search with "hygiene" and "inspection" nothing came up could you link video if you remember?
MynameisEGIS b
Hello there, im from Uruguay, i would like to ask about the seeds. Microgreen seeds are different from regular seeds you can find at the store? Are there specifici microgreen seeds? Sorry if you told in the video but since im not an english speaker i couldnt get it all 100% . Thank you very much
they are not different, but buying in larger qtys compared to your run of the mill seed packets is important bc youre using many many times over the amount of seeds you'd use in a garden.
1 question dear...
What's the EC level of cocopeat you use.
Is any level mandatory ??
I have no idea.
Crazy how much things have changed for you since this video @curtisstone
Just curious why you're dropping the red amaranth?
It's been difficult to grow with low light hours. We'll bring it back in the spring.
I get lot of fungus in mustard microgreens
hay i wish u could sell the paper pot trays here in canada. because by the time i get them throw papperpot.co with all the extra fees i cant do it . u must no where i am coming from..u should stock them and sell them i think u could do well with them. geting johneys 1 inch flats for me is10 for 70 and by the time i get 10 flats its 140 i cant do it its nuts. help me ..thanks
Verticalized real estate - que?
Hmm generally can’t regrow them endlessly for life. So what’s the answer when seeds are no longer obtainable ?
Also do u recondmend micro greens for beggeners
steffen 12 yeah they are great for beginners
Will you be doing any classes up near where you are in 2018?
+Windswept Homestead yes. Lots actually. Something every month of the growing season this year. 1, 2 and 5 day courses.
Urban Farmer Curtis Stone I am going to try to get to some of your classes this year. I will keep looking for the ones that are going to work best with our schedule.
What is ur favorite tool on ur farm
He's got a few videos where he talks about his tools
Can you use all veggie seeds to do micorgreens?
+61third no.
Do you stack all microgreens? For example, chervil?
Yes, pretty much. Especially now with the paper pot flats.
interesting, I didn't know that chervil also had to push up like radish shoots and the other microgreens. I was doing the cover over that you mentioned in your video, but as you say, it takes up more trays, which right now during the winter is okay because I am not producing as much, but in the summer, would be costly. I am going to give it a shot.
Pea shoots second grow after cut I sell for fresh chickens feed.
Hey Curtis.... Delta Farm out your neck of the woods... over 40 people got carbon monoxide poisoning. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks.
I heard about it on the radio. Don't have an opinion on it.
"The incident took place at Windset Farms on 41 B St., where a number of people became ill while pressure washing inside a nursery, according to reports. Police believe poor ventilation may have caused a carbon monoxide build-up."
Running an internal combustion engine inside a building without adequate ventilation is a known issue throughout construction, it sounds like the employees were incapable of determining that. Can't blame the farm, or it's equipment if the users of such are not intelligent enough to use it within established parameters.
The news story had the answer. CO is not good for plants, and lethal to humans. I have a propane heater but I vent the exhaust outside the greenhouse. I have a different problem - I have self-opening solar vents who get confused when the temp outside is frosty but the in the greenhouse is barely warm enough to grown microgreens.
plants take in and live off of carbon dioxide?
no, my mistake
hi.
Hey Curtis! I've ran into a problem with my black oil sunflower grow and was hoping you'd be able to help me out! I've done several different test runs both in 1020 flats and small pots, using different soil, soaking the seeds vs not soaking, etc.. I noticed a problem in several test runs on the soils surface. I'm picking out sunflowers that began growing roots and cotyledons, but the roots shriveled up and turned brown on the tip. They never made their way into the soil, and eventually died, even though my soil is very light and fluffy. I'm losing about half of the sunflowers that I planted due to this problem.
I uploaded a picture here if that helps - imgur.com/a/fsX0knm
Have you ever had this problem? Do you know what might be causing this to happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)
Have you tried pumpkin?
Hi Curtis, great stuff as always, looking forward to the micro course. Any way you can block out this Tom Becker person from trolling your channel? - keeps adding stupid comments and promoting crap. Sorry man. Thanks!!!
Can't hear you
Why not fill a flat with cement and use that for even germ?
Because I have these bricks.
Why are you discontinuing Amaranth ?
It's tough to grow due to mold issues.
Ryan Willett I recall Curtis started using a fungicide on sunflower sprouts. There must be other mitigating facts. I also recall outdoor amaranth microgreens seem to work.
Wow.
now farmers sell 25kg worth of sun flower seeds for $35, but mumms sell for 20xs more, why don't you use theirs?
organic might come into the equation
10kg bag of organic sunflower seed is $62 CAD from Mumms. That's cheap and good quality.
that's true. I haven't questioned if their sunflower seeds here are organic or not though.
dido ..
Corn.microgreens?
Popcorn shoots.
Who the hell will buy my greens?
Good grief. Touching and wiping your nose and then touching your product. That is a cardinal sin. Don't 'experts' ever take basic classes in 'hygiene'? E Coli outbreak, here I come.
Were you the guy wearing a mask while driving a car by yourself? Was that you?
