The Worst Super Bowl loss was so famously bad that all we have to say is 28-3

- The 2016 Atlanta Falcons were on the verge of accomplishing something the franchise had never achieved. Something that a city and a fan base had been itching for since the teams' inception in 1966. Raising the Lombardi Trophy.
But sports in its simplest form comes down to a winner and a loser. And on this night the Atlanta Falcons got handed the largest L imaginable. A loss so devastating, so horrifying, so heart-wrenching, that the mere mention of a particular set of numbers, will send any Atlanta fan into immediate shock. This is … THE WORST SUPER BOWL LOSS.

- Indians blew a 3-1 lead

@Zach Dolgoff I'm not a Falcons fan either, but that game makes me angry too. The Patriots are proven cheaters, and the fact that they get away with it sets a bad example for those who look up to them, especially kids. Defeating them in the NFL's biggest spotlight would have sent the message that cheaters never prosper in the end. The Falcons had one job, and they blew it spectacularly.
MrAVGNdude no it’s like having a 3-0 series lead on Jordan pippen and Rodman. If you lose it’s all your fault. There was no big injury to point to, no horrible late game referee calls, nope. You just straight lost
Zach Dolgoff because no one is a pats fan
@@hotwax9376 If cheaters never win yet the Patriots continue to prevail, perhaps they aren't cheaters. If Spy Gate and Deflate Gate had occurred on any other team it may be cheating, but this is Belichick and the Patriots, who are known to eek out _every_ inch of advantage they can. Belichick was complaining about the _roof_ being open in the beginning of the last Superbowl they won, worried that it could affect his kicker! These are guys who try _everything_, it makes sense that they might color outside the lines every once in a while. You never know if you're stretching the rules to the breaking point until someone tells you you've broken them, just like you never know if a glass is truly full until some spills over the edge. They've won two more Superbowls since without any cheating accusations, which suggests they're not "cheaters," but a well-coached hard-playing football team.

Worst Super Bowl loss? Simple numbers triggering a city?
I have two words for you: Wide Right
That would make an *amazing* Rewind
The Bills and 4 L's in a row
That doesn't compare to blowing a 25 point second half lead. I mean, how do you even lose? The Bills lost on a missed FG & then they ran into three all time great teams in a row.
also: helmet catch
Here's the thing...the Bills recovered from that to go back and continue to challenge for Super Bowls for the next few years (but coming up empty). However, what makes 28-3 bad is that not only did the Falcons have the game won but they haven't recovered from the loss still. The Bills will always have their AFC dynasty if not a Super Bowl title. All Falcons fans had is this one year they should have won but didn't in the most unbelievable way possible. I'm a Patriots fan btw and although I greatly appreciated it.... it might be the worst 2nd half game plan in the history of the sport that the Falcons decided to roll with.
Me, a Seahawks fan: *phew!*
The Seahawks made one mistake. One.
The Falcons couldn't stop making mistakes.
And it arguably wasn't a mistake considering it was 2nd down and you have only 1 timeout. An incomplete pass only burns a few seconds while a stuffed run burns significantly more and pretty much telegraphs you're going to pass on 3rd and 4th. It sucks that the Patriots predicted the pass, but statistically it had the highest chance of catching them off guard.
@@matthewmazzatto8003 Thank you. People like to act like it was the "worst play" in history but they only say that because it didn't work. All hindsight bias. But run that same play 100 times and it's only picked a few times at most.

Matthew Mazzatto I’m just a neutral fan, I like players more than teams so I have no stake in this convo. But I will say this. Hey Joe. Long time fan of SB Nation.
I have a story you might like? I'll try to keep this short.
During Xmas of 2016 my dad learned that he had Cancer, and while we fought hard prior to this he had never been as beat down. And that was tough. I'm the youngest of 4 and my dad was a giant, especially when it comes to sports... or at least MY sports. Like many kids, my dad was my first, and best coach. Decades after this as I grew up I would find such an enormous depth to every lesson he taught me, and long before his mortality ever occurred to me, I had credited to him the learning of the three P's.
Poise
Prevents
Panic.
It was the second most import thing he ever taught me. You don't stop playing when all seems lost. Never.
But no matter what the outcome, you are a good sport and shake hands. THAT was the MOST important thing. :)
Now I am gonna lose you a little.
My dad grew up south of Boston, in Plymouth, and our family were dyed in the wool Boston Homers. Red Sox. Celtics. Bruins (my grandma from Quebec loved hockey), and even the Patriots, who in my youth were always just... meh. I mean, my uncle was buried with his red sox hat. But it wasn't roses,
because *I* grew up in the 70's and 80's... when being a Red Sox fan meant pain.
Lots and lots of pain. A pain handed from father to son for generations... as my grandfather handed it to my dad.
Looking back now - it is an alien world.
This new world was VERY different since 2001 (with the Celtics as a bright side note).
The Boston Sports "era" since 2001 was a strange world to us, but it felt nice... having pushed through so many "close but yankees" years.
BUT Here we were now... in 2017...
with both our work ethics for not quitting, me with my own kids, and it was a great time to be a fan.
But cancer.
My brother and sisters had been heroes, but even they did not want to head home and watch the game with him... and one of us NEEDED to... it is a lot of emotion and drama, and leaving it all to my mom was not fair.
So it was me, and my brother and sisters were relieved... because victory is never assured, and
well, they needed a break. As I said, my dad had been pretty beat down.
And then I watched 3 quarters of Atlanta absolutely balling!
But for my dad... At 28-3, he was done.
Screw the patriots,
screw cancer,
screw life... this was just another thing happening this year... another loss... nothing going right...
And hey... when you are sick - you sometimes have selfish moments, and even with the last 17 years of sports fandom and the success of all of his favorite teams...
he was sick of losing. This year... he was sick of it. All.
But I didn't let him.
Poise, prevents, panic. I reminded him that he was my coach. That he was MY teacher.
And he sat back down, and together with my dad I got to watch the greatest comeback in sports history.
So, I am really and TRULY sorry. I love Atlanta (the city) and her people. Truly. And you have some of the most passionate sports fans I have ever met. I really do root for y'all every chance I get (and your Atlanta Braves in the 90's were... amazing.)
And for the record - when 28-3 comes up around here in New England... it is ALWAYS a lesson. Play 60. Shake hands.
It doesn't give your fans a title,
but I do truly appreciate the gift of convincing my dad that he was a good dad... by having him not miss one of the greatest games of all time. The "falcons' part never comes up, and I'll never hear a cruel word said about y'all.
You made a Fantastic video.
Oh, and my dad won...
well, for a little while.
In Feb of 2019, almost 2 years later the clock ran out. Two amazing and hard years. He fought the whole time, but was lucky enough to have had brief moments of golf in between... and he got 2 more years of 'one last times', and he enjoyed them.
And when the L came he was graceful, and poised, and we all agreed that he played a good game. :)
As a falcons fan, this is like the 9/11 of our sports franchises. Everyone remembers where they were when 28-3 happened.
I went to go play Minecraft after halftime since I thought it was over.
Phew titans fans only suffer 5 seconds of grief this vid
Ikr 😆
Bryson White ha!
3:50 I think you forgot SB49 (Pats were down 24-14 vs SEA in the fourth quarter)
Thor Christensen yep I dont know how they missed that
Coming back from 10 is easy
Attie Pollard it was against the defending champs though
Attie Pollard if it’s easy how is it that the pats are the only ones to do it in a super bowl, twice now in fact.
Impulse4811 ill play devils advocate and say since its usually the best teams it is a little bit of a small sample size considering the fact good teams dont tend to blow leads often, but that doesnt take any credit from Brady and the Pats its two magic moments. If anything it makes it more special, both for their own special reasons, the pick and the comeback, but im sure in the next 15 years itll happen again
I remember watching this game. Im a raiders fan and it was really sad to see them absolutely fail at winning this super bowl. Hopefully they could go back soon.
I remember watching this game with my grandpa and he went to sleep after the half time show . man if only he stayed😂😂

Nah, that was bad, but this was still worse, because of the huge lead blown

“Breath of fresh air for Falcons fans” you mean everybody that’s not a Pats fan
Yep, I'd bet that nearly everyone outside of New England (maybe even outside of Massachusetts) was pulling for the Falcons. I know I certainly was, and most of the time I couldn't care less about them.
Actually, they had a map with each state colored red for those rooting for ATL and blue for NE. The entire country was blood red except for Massachusetts and, curiously, my home state of LA. Hmm
Pats are the best dynasty ever, 6 rings.

Someone should do "the creation of SB nation deserves a deep rewind"
The most memed Super Bowl ever. Still is today, I think. And I think this does deserve some infamy for how badly this was blown.
But seriously. How you blow a 25-point lead is pretty much inconceivable. Then again, WSU blew a 30+ point lead to UCLA earlier this NCAA season...
Watched this whole Super Bowl from beginning to end with my buds including the halftime show, honestly the biggest shock we had since the Cubs winning the World Series 3 months earlier.
You're a man with great sportsmanship bro. To put your emotions aside for an honest veiw takes alot of balls
Went almost a week without remembering fml

Awesome commentary. You can feel the disappointment, the angst. I mean, you didn't exactly "enlighten" me on anything. But I feel the tone, man. I feel it.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl

Great video bruh as a pats fam my condolences lol. Few things I wanted to point out- Pats were the last team to overcome a 10 point deficit against the Seahawks 24-14 and that was 2nd half (2014). They also had the number one scoring defense but not the number one overall defense they were 8. Last thing pats offense wasnt that good they didnt have a legit rb that could consistently get carries though james white was a nasty recieving back. Gronk was put on ir late in the season and they were left with edelman, hogan, and bennet. Plus the goat of course.
