Does anyone know how to throw a football? | The History of the Atlanta Falcons, Part 1

  • The Atlanta Falcons are really doing it. They’re finally going to win the Super Bowl they’ve spent 51 years chasing. In order to fully appreciate how much the Falcons and their fans have endured, we need to return to the ancient era of Falcons football - the age of endless losing, chain-smoking, and some of the worst quarterbacking the NFL has ever seen.
This is part one of a seven-part series.
Written and hosted by Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein
    Directed by Jon Bois
    Produced by Alex Rubenstein
    Additional contributions by Joe Ali
    Rights specialist Lindley Sico
Secret Base executive producer Will Buikema
Secret Base managing editor Ryan Nanni
    Corrections:
41:25 - The Saints’ record entering this game was 1-9, not 2-8.

The 1970's-early 80's Oakland/L.A. Raiders just read your morally-induced rant/condemnation and found it hilarious, quite amusing, but also conveniently selective in terms of criticism of how teams like them, or were accused of playing dirty, violent, and nasty?
Should the Raiders organization return those 3 SB rings they've won throughout their franchise history (1976, 1980, and 1983) because their rough, extremely overly physical sort of play, late or blatantly illegal hits, or brutal, borderline hits that left Darryl Stingley paralyzed (and essentially led to his death in a roundabout way) by Jack Tatum during a 1978 pre-season game. Maybe their SB wins are tainted, too. I mean, before you cast the Saints into the pit of fire and eternal damnation, at least let us know who'll be accompanying us for the ride.

The Super Bowl LI retread at the beginning reminds me that I still haven't gotten over it. I still sometimes think "surely that was just some nightmare I had"-- but then I remember that it actually happened and the soul crushing feeling resurrects itself all over again. And I think the most painful part of the worst Falcons memory ever it is considered to be the GREATEST Patriots memory ever-- and thus, we have to keep seeing it re-aired over and over and over... ugh...

A good few years ago I decided that to appreciate NFL properly I needed to follow a team. As I live in the UK I have no geographical connection to any particular franchise so I elected to follow the one with the longest history that had never been to a Super Bowl, as I thought it would feel nice when they finally did. As such, I picked the Lions.
Why I did that to myself I still have no idea.

Some say it is the curse of Bobby Layne. I say the Lions suffer the curse of William Clay Ford. He is the worst owner nobody talks about. Ever since he bought the Lions, they only had like 8 winning seasons and ONE playoff win.

Thanks for this series on the history of the Falcons. I went to Atlanta to enroll at GT in September 1966 and joined the Braves and the Falcons as new comers. It was hard to listen (most Falcon games weren't televised in those days) to the Falcons lose so badly week after week.

I just cannot explain how much I love these detailed accounts of unfortunate sports franchises' entire histories. I can't help but appreciate the sheer effort that's put into these videos; some charts alone look like they'd take days to make, not to mention animation and citing all those damn sources, AND writing the script which I might add is pretty impeccable. I can't also help but wonder which franchise you'll cover next. Will you stick with football? Because the Buffalo Bills have a storied but unfortunate history I'd love to learn more about. Or will you venture into hockey? Because frankly the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks both have a history that fits the mold for this video perfectly, at least on the surface-level. Just really great work and I, along with many others I'm sure, look forward to what's to come.
