The worst MLB Opening Day game was historically lopsided in the saddest way imaginable

- Baseball fans slog through the dead of winter because there is a singular light at the end of the tunnel -- the dawn of a new MLB season. Well in 2016, the Dodgers travelled to San Diego for an Opening Day game that packed 162 games worth of disappointment into one miserable evening from hell.

April 1, 1996. Cincinnati vs Montreal. Seven pitches into the game, Home Plate Umpire, John McSherry called time, walked toward the Reds' dugout, collapsed and died. That's the worst opening day game.
Was waiting for someone to mention it. We convinced work to turn on the game, and tuned in just after McSherry collapsed. Very eerie to hear all the silence, and then the cutaway back to WLW for the news.
April fools?
Ford The Sharks Fan 44 No that was real. He really died
Vincent Shipe oh that’s sad 😢
Agreed
Why would the dodgers announcer be upset with a dodgers win?? Like it’s not great baseball but it coulda been a loss
Lane Hale and it doesn’t seem like vin to get mad at a dodgers win.
But that's good ole fundamental baseball singles and doubles advance the runner. Not their fault the Padres sucked lol.
He was more upset with the effort put in by the Padres and the terrible baseball that followed
@@ajm469 finally someone gets it
Dude is like 90.... when you got that little time left, spending 3 hours of it on this game would be annoying.
More like Worst Opening SERIES
Dodgers shut out Padres that series
25-0
Kenta Maeda made his debut in that series and homered
Padres are the black hole of baseball. Manny Machado is going to be a Mandela Effect.
@WesIsaLeo that's way above the Mendoza Line
But at least we won our opener today 2-0 vs the Giants
For worst opening day, I expected the video to be about how the Reds/Expos game was almost called due to sudden snow and later called due to umpire John McSherry having a heart attack and dying.
Vin Scully called a 15-0 Dodgers blowout of an opening day game against a division rival... From his perspective, I'm willing to bet he was having a great time calling that game!! Go Dawjyers!! ⚾🏆
Why have a guy who clearly dislikes baseball make a baseball video?
SB Nation's shtick in part is to hate baseball while pretending that everyone hates baseball. Typical millennial style journalism.
@@JMTavares7 lmao "millennial style journalism" as if anything has actually changed all that much
Insendius baseball is sickening
@@JMTavares7 Typical reaction - has no sense of humor, and blames millennials for not appreciating anything. We would, except we're not sure that climate change, massive student loan debt, and the rise of divisiveness are things to *appreciate.*
@@EricAKATheBelgianGuy "the rise of divisiveness?"
A 14 inning pitcher's duel sounds _amazing!_ I guarantee watching that game live would have been exciting.
clearly this guy doesn't watch baseball.
Yah only if someone is going to have a no hitter/perfect game
I beg to differ, that game was pretty nice if you ask me
jasonfire34 BRUH
Same go dodgers
Lol foh
Your picture is Dodgers, Lakers, Rams?, and what else? I can't tell what the bottom right is. Im guessing Galaxy?
@@utbelok Kings (throwback logo) is top right and Rams is bottom right
This is a bad opener based solely on baseball, but I have to say that probably the worst Opening Day in Major League history was April 1, 1996, in Riverfront Stadium, where a horrified sellout crowd watched home plate umpire John McSherry collapse and die of a heart attack in the top of the first inning.
This should've been specifically mentioned in the video, "solely on baseball plays"
His last opening day mightve been shit, but the baseball gods saved the best for last. Charlie Culberson delivered
Fuck that homerun gave me chills
Loved seeing it in person
Did you really say "Clay" Kershaw? Or did I mishear?
He did
Thas wat I heard
Yeah he dis
Ikr, I was like “Dafuq? Can’t you get someone who at least knows enough about baseball to know the greatest pitcher of the last 15 years (I know some will argue it’s Scherzer but he hasn’t passed Kershaw yet) doesn’t go by ‘Clay’?”
Yeah, it seems he is closer to kershaw than his own teammates, who call him Clayton.
Me as a padres fan : dont be padres plz plz.
Video:the san diego padres....
How I feel about my football team any time a worst nfl video comes on. 😂😂
Aren’t you from Koogs Videos
@@rodolfovazquez5222 yea man
😔 at least the future is bright
Same bro... Same.
It’s hard to watch this video since the narrater clearly isn’t a baseball fan. It’s very annoying.
Clay Kershaw and good ol' Vinny Scully
@ woah are you a gamer
So they called Utley geriatric and Scully young? Lol
Question: Why was the only opening day no-hitter a candidate for worst ever?
Because no dingers.
Cause this guy making the video is a tool
Worst team offensive performance my guess. But that’s overlooking a historic pitching performance by Feller, which is still the only opening day no hitter.
Not a no hitter did you watch this video?
@@RenaldyCalixte Yes. Yes I did. They listed Bob Feller's Opening Day No Hitter. The only no hitter to occur on Opening Day. Ever.
“They’re playing Clay Kershaw”
Baseball games can be interesting without home runs, FWIW.
Small ball is much more entertaining in my opinion.
Alex Johnson Honestly though, the thing the league and the idiots at ESPN and MLBN who talk about “pace of play” don’t realize is that what’s killing the game is the new mentality of launch angles all over the place to the point where everyone’s popping out all the time and guys refusing to go the other way and thus having a .200 avg because “if you hit a homer, the shift doesn’t matter”, yet they hit right into the shift all the time in big spots.
I remember growing up watching baseball just a decade ago when everyone was playing small ball and focusing on the fundamentals. I like statcast and analytics and what they teach us, but I also think that there’s a time for that stuff and a time to return to the basics and in today’s game it seems that everyone’s too focused on what’s new.
@@armadillolover99 Well said. To frame what you said another way, world you rather see a lineup of Icheros or Judges? (Or choose your comparison).
Alex Johnson
Nah, that’s not fair. Ask would you rather see a lineup of Ichiros or Bonds?
Yankee With No Brim A lineup of Bonds’s would be great, it means every at bat is well fought out and guys who hit for a good average, walk a ton and don’t strike out. What I’m describing is more a lineup full of Adam Dunns, all striking out all the time and when they don’t strike out, grounding out into the shift
Ahhh the best saga on UA-cam, the worst!!
"Throwing a ball's hard, man"
"This carpe was not diem'd"
LOL. Interesting. Love this series.
I would have expected the 1996 season opener here, where John McSherry collapsed dead seven pitches into the game, and always lovely Marge Schott was all about how the universe was out to get her.
The fact that the narrator was bald really surprised me lol
I dont know why you were surprised but your feelings are valid
@@ELHipnacio because I could've sworn he had a full head of hair last time I saw him
"twenty hundred"
Sure. Let's go with that.
The worst Sunday night football game: Seahawks vs Cardinals week 7, 6-6 tie
Nah, that was a great game. Defensive slugfest ftw.
There's nothing I need in my life more than a rewinder on that Jose Bautista bat flip
“Try something else San Diego”
San Diego : So you’re saying we should sign Manny Machado for 10 years ?
Watch machado opt out five years from now.
How about folding the Padres and try to bring the NFL back to the area. The people there deserve better.
The Real Jay Stone what is opt
FBI
When signing contracts in sports, depending on the contract, you can have an opt out clause, meaning that after a certain amount of years, you can get out of the contract you signed initially, and either negotiate a new one with the same team, or go to completely new team. There are player options when the player can decide whether or not they want to opt out, or team options where the team decides whether or not they keep you.
The Real Jay Stone
Probably
The worst opening day was 1995. I don't see how anything can beat it.
Hard to put cheeky music and comments over a dead man, I guess.
@@bluemonkjd If you're referring to the umpire who died behind home plate, that happened in 1996.
I remember opening day 95 in Detroit when they had a lot of drunks running on the field
@@CinemaDemocratica Didn't the Reds always start before everybody else? Maybe not on a different day, but I'm pretty sure that they used to have the earliest start time on Opening Day, every year.
I was at this game as a Padres fan. We always lose on opening day, but hey today we won 2-0 vs Giants
I was at the game too, Myers tha MVP
I wanted to go, but I could leave school early. Happy we won the first game because we always lose the first game
"- and the first digit of his ERA is a GODDAMN 1!" LMAOOO i'm dead
WORST MLB ALL STAR GAME
All of them stink
Milo Copeland xD yes
Bug Seligs tie game comes to.mind
Was gonna say that too.
Bud Selig's tie game. An outstanding candidate.
Loved the "May need to grab a bat" on Mark. Nice touch.
Not even gonna mention the Expos-Reds opener where the umpire had a heart attack on field on the field? Interesting...
The worst MLB postseason collapse: 2004 New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox
Josh Gibson This is what made me a Yankees fan. I’m glad that when people call me a bandwagon, I can tell them how the 04 alcs is the reason. That usually shuts them up
@@JustxIce95 Shuts them up cuz they're confused? I know I am.
Like, nevermind that they blew a 3-0 series lead, that particular Yankees team was just LOADED with d-bags. I actually felt bad for Jeter being stuck with those fools.
And its available on dvd in full.broadcast
Bear Archambault Lol Jeter was/is a d-bag too and I'm a Yankees fan
@@panama1942 Lmao... Maybe he just hid it better than A-Rod and a couple of the other boys.
I just don't get how THAT particular Yankees squad actually won over any fans.
Although, Manny Machado has fans, so I guess some people like rooting for the D-Bags.
Oh god this still hurts 3 years later
At least you can say you were the champions of the off-season in 2015, Padres fans. lol
Lived in San Diego for a few years after living in Massachusetts and going to Fenway a few times. You can show up at Petco 5 mins before the 1st pitch and get seats behind the padres bench 😂🤣. Loved going to that stadium.
Wow...gotta go to San Diego once social distancing ends.
Thank you for making this video
Sb nation: worst opening day is April 4 2016

Clayton Kershaw: genetically engineered to pitch a baseball*
*regular season only
2007 Cleveland Indians opener where they called the game due to snow and Paul Byrd had a no-hitter going when they postponed it. They ended up moving the Indians next home series to Milwaukee because Cleveland was due for more snow.
i just played in my second game of the year. My team blew a 6-0 lead in the fifth and allowed 20 runs in the same inning. Losing 20-6 is amazing.
Cheese=holes
More cheese=more holes
More holes=less cheese
So,more cheese=less cheese?
"Kershaw genetically engineered to throw a baseball." Unless its the postseason.
I remember this series. Took SD a few games to score 1 run
Wow, we need worst NBA opening night now where the Heat lost 108-66
An opening day game in Southern California can not possibly be the worst opening day game. You need a northern game with sleet
We have to remember this was before the Extra Point kick was moved a few yards.
“Quieter than Mr. Bean on Tylenol PM” HAHAHA I can’t stop laughing aaaaaa..
This just seems like every single baseball game ever
Aaron Zimm no not really
¿can you guys do best/worst homerun derby por favor?
5:55 Sounds like school

Why should I listen to Bob Costas when this guy is clearly the best 😆
I mean when a game is very high scoring it usually takes very long.
PLEASE give us a rewinder on the Joe bautista bat flip + insane 7th inning
Well, at least there was an opening day for that year.
As much as I like these, we need more on other sports. Give me The Worst Boxing Match, The Worst UFC PPV, The Worst Boston Marathon Winner, The Worst Kentucky Derby. Mix it up.
I don't think anyone from SB cares about boxing. I can definitely think of some good candidates for "Worst Boxing Match".
Giorgio Gazzola My pick is the one where Tyson killed Spinks in 90 seconds, yours?
this is such an underrated channel

them and foolish baseball
@@0Architectdude0 Foolish Baseball is awesome. KTO and Set The Edge are nice too.
Vin Scully calling a lopsided April game : baseball
As
Johnny Blue : scotch
The discerning palate knows the good stuff.
It was 70 degrees in April. The worst opening day game is one where the threat of snow hangs over it. So basically any game in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Minnesota, or maybe Pittsburgh
There's no such thing as a bad baseball game. Especially one with so many hits and scoring!
I beg to differ. The Indians-Yankees game from 1989 featured four straight walks by Rick Vaughn and pickoff of Willie Mays Hayes.
I was rummaging through some old baseball cards and I found a 1989 Topps for both Clu Haywood and Roger Dorn. On the back of Haywood’s card it said he led the league in nose hair.
6:55 "Try something else, San Diego" - I heard that's Ron Burgundy's new catchphrase
How come the Padres are on the wrong side of EVERY baseball video I watch!? As a diehard Padres fan, I hope this changes soon!
At least we won our Opener
I don’t know if they will be for much longer
At least you Jokers had the great Tony Gwynn Sr and now you have Fernando Tatis Jr.
As a dodgers fan it was fun to watch for me but I can’t imagine being a Padres fan
I was wondering when we would see this
where can I get those sd surfer bro sunglasses tho
“They scored 15 runs without a dinger”
*yasiel puig hits a inside the park home run*

Worst Opening Day? As a Dodgers fan i loved it.

1. Travis Ishikawa Walk off 2014
2. Jose Bautista Bat flip 2015
3. Rajai Davis Homerun 2016
4. Austin Jaskson’s Catch 2017
5. David Bote Walk off 2018
thank you
Klayton Kershaw has been my favorite pitcher since he played for the Great Lakes loons and I’ll tell you I was so happy when he was called up to my dodgers.
What you talking about, that game seems just great to me
"The geriatric Utley"
First of all, watch your mouth when you speak of Dodger Dad.
"They're facing Clay Kershaw, a man genetically engineered to pitch a baseball (in the regular season/not postseason. He chokes repeatedly in the postseason) like a great white shark is engineered to eat."
The Cincinnati Reds had an umpire die on Opening Day in 1995. The owner regifted flowers to the widow after bitching about the game being canceled and how she felt “cheated”.
I was watching this while brushing my teeth so the floss reminder was actually pretty useful
People constantly forget that Utley was a beast on the Phillies.
i remember my old gym teacher loved the padres and i asked him what the heck happened when we came back to school the next day 😂
@5:21 whats up with the hats?
Also Padres announcer Dick Enberg's final opening day - not saying that Vin wasn't awesome (he was), but Dick contributed quite a bit to sports broadcasting himself
I enjoyed Enberg on the old NBC broadcasts of AFC games
As a Padres fan, I don't appreciate this guy making assumptions about what we hope of our lineup. We're just here for a good time, your wins and losses complicate what we've built here.
How are the padres that bad this year... I can legit recognize most of the names on that lineup lol
Narrator...are you the guy who did Video Game Assholes??? I loved that channel.
Well, they do have AAF. The SD Fleet drew 20,000+ fans on Saturday.
If you're looking for a suggestion for "The Worst", you should do something about the 1987 World Junior Hockey championship brawl between Canada and USSR. The "Punch-up in Piestany" had terrible players, terrible officiating, terrible rink management, terrible IIHF corruption, and terrible media responses.
Wow padres fans still stayed. Sucks that their team sucks. PADRES FANS ARE LOYAL
Probably a lot of Dodger fans there
jr132 probably bandwagons
*Contemplating streaking*
5:41 Is this a Seinfeld reference? Elaine says the same thing about telling her name to JFK Jr.
"Who speaks like Michelangelo paints."
You came up with that "brilliant" line all on your own?
Smells like Jon
I remember watching this one live. Got to agree that's worse than a 15-0 blowout.
I went to the Brooklyn Cyclones opener one year and they lost to the Staten Island Yankees 18-0. With an added delay after the home plate ump was knocked out.
How’d he get knocked out?
6 years later, the padres eliminated the 111 win dodgers in the NLDS, REWINDER TIME!
Expos-Reds, April 1, 1996 on line 1.
Great White turns into a minno in the playoffs!
Really left a lot of Ron Burgundy jokes on the table there.
Ah yes, I love to visit Sandy Eggo in California
Ah yes Kershaw the great white of the regular season. Guppy of the post season
Not everyone from San Diego is a surfer. Some of us are diehard sports fans. Hard enough rooting for my LA chargers now, than to be reminded that our last major league team is the Cleveland Browns of baseball.
I watched this game from my balcony. I lived in the Legends building.
It was that one game where we knew we had a tiny chance to win it all. After the game reality set in
Please do a rewind of the 2011 World Series!
