Dan Marino's last professional game was the worst final game of all time | The Worst

  • In the 2000 NFL Playoffs, the Dolphins limped into a divisional round matchup with the Jaguars. Dan Marino, who had had an up-and-down season (mostly the latter), played like absolute garbage and was benched after one drive in the second half. Jimmy Johnson retired the next day, Marino voided his contract then retired a couple months later, and we all pretended like he retired a year earlier when he was still competent.
    Also, scientists cloned that ibex that died and were able to make a new one so the species wasn't extinct. 10 minutes later that ibex died, so the species went extinct a second time. Knowledge!

    The most interesting part of Dan Marino's final game is that the Pyrenean ibex that was crushed by a tree and caused the species to go extinct was actually then used to create a cloned copy and bring the species back from extinction. That clone then died after 10 minutes so the species went extinct twice #yolo

      It was so long ago I honestly don't remember total season stats. I know I'd have the most frustrating games where'd I'd be winning 107-0 and then fumble a punt return and they'd take it in for a TD, ruining my shutout and boy would that steam me! But those NES controllers back then...those things could take a beating. I do not lie or exaggerate when I say that I have put holes in drywall swinging them by the cord to smash into the wall and I have stomped on the controller hard enough to leave a serious depression in the linoleum but not a scratch on the controller.

      @M Question: Why does a soccer fan care about trying to state this on a US football forum? Here is the truth soccer guy. As much as I respect the game of international soccer, I don't care much about it. It doesn't dominate my time. And I don't invest in it as much. When Team USA men's team plays, I support them. We all know that the US Men's Team is no where near on par with the other countries. And I repeat this again, we don't care. I don't see US fans crying a river when the men's team gets eliminated. The US Women's Team on the other hand: We own the world in that department because the woman's team is the best! But I'll be honest, I'm a bit disappointed when they lose, but my heart is most likely not broken up about it. Personally, I'll take US football over Intl. Football if I'm given a choice. And I'm a basketball fan first.

      There were some chemistry problems I think between Jimmy Johnson and Dan Marino. It was hard to put a finger on it. Jimmy Johnson almost wanted to quit before the 1999 season started. There were high expectations for the Dolphins to get to the Super Bowl that year. That devastating loss to the Jags took so much air out of both JJ and Dangerous Dan. I wasn't too much surprised when both of them retired after that loss. That was a humiliating way to go for both of them.

    • @marccoralluzzo
      @marccoralluzzo 5 років тому +31

      @@jrsmith1998, Jimmy Johnson never really wanted Marino to begin with. He wanted to rebuild the team and draft a younger QB. But he knew the ownership and the fans would never stand for it. He was not going to be the coach that cut, traded or benched Dan Marino in Miami. In the beginning it seemed like it was a match made in Heaven. They even had that "Boys of Summer" Sports Illustrated cover with the two of them embraced and laughing. But it was all short lived. Johnson wanted to focus more on the running game, something Marino was never a big fan of. Also, with Marino's limited speed and mobility, his attempts at play action weren't exactly pretty. This is a man who up until Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had never had a 1,000 yard rusher. He had always won games with his arm. Asking a man like this to change everything he knew this late in his career was not something that was going to work.
      Anyway, this nightmare of a game happens and Johnson resigns. Dave Wannstedt is named Head Coach. He makes it clear very early on that the starting job does not belong to Marino, but that he would have to compete for it. This, I believe, was a major factor in Marino's retirement decision. Going into his 18th season he would be expected to compete for a job that was his for 17 seasons prior. Marino had also suffered a serious injury (I believe a nerve injury in his throwing shoulder) that he never recovered from that season. I believe in his first game back from surgery he had thrown 5 interceptions against Dallas. You could tell for the rest of the season that he wasn't himself and wasn't making the same strong throws.
      Despite all of this, I still as a 17 year old kid and the biggest Marino fan around, wanted him to come back. But looking back I think it was probably for the best that he didn't. He was actually offered a starting job by Dennis Green with the Vikings. Imagine Dan Marino with a young Randy Moss along with Chris Carter and Robert Smith in the backfield. That would have been insane. Marino reportedly said he didn't want to leave his family and go to Minnesota for training camp. Green told him he could stay home and they would come down and work with him there. Green basically offered him everything he possibly could. But I think Marino realized that with his age and his injuries, playing on the artificial turf in Minnesota would not have been good for him. God, I would have loved to have seen him play there though.
      Anyway, apologies for the long rant. I won't watch this video because its too depressing for me!

      @thomasblock1164 5 років тому +2

      I agree that he deserves respect. I think Shula and Marino basically ushered the shotgun snap back into the NFL, also. Imagine the game without it. He was a tremendous talent. I do wonder about his leadership qualities though. I think they may have fallen short of the best quarter backs of all time. Puts him just below Montana, Peyton, Unitas, Tom Brady, and a couple others. Being the best qb to never win a superbowl does give him some recognition and because of this his name will never be forgotten. Whereas plenty of qb who have won superbowls will just slip away from the memory of the common fan.

    • @32playaplay
      @32playaplay 5 років тому +1

      Thomas Block if you look back at the stats , they rarely had a top 10 defense , not many teams win a super bowl without a good defense and no running game 🤷🏻‍♂️ put Marino in the cowboys offense and take Aikman out.. and then Marino is the goat 🤷🏻‍♂️ just saying

    • @thomasblock1164
      @thomasblock1164 5 років тому +1

      32playaplay, Aikman was also very good and is one of those superbowl winners that is never brought up when talking about the greatest qbs of all time. Whereas Marino usually gets mentioned. I don't necessarily disagree with you, however, it is an unknowable thing, we can't just insert a player into a different team and pretend that we can know precisely what the outcome would be. Heard that same argument all of the time with Barry Sanders. "If he played with Dallas then he would be far better than Emmitt Smith." Well, if he would have played with Dallas then all of the Lions fans that made that declaration wouldn't have liked him anyway. At least not to the same extent. Marino was a great player, whose best comparison is probably Brady. Brady plays for a better organization but Shula was no joke and the Dolphins have a rich history. Still, I think that Brady may have him in the leadership area. Marino was more talented from day one of his career until his mid-thirties when his arm strength lessened while Brady's has remained. I guess the better question is, could Montana or Elway have won a super bowl with the exact same team that Marino led? I sure don't know.

    Can you do the Worst FIFA World Cup Qualifier suggestion would be the USA 🇺🇸 embracing 2-1 loss against Trinidad & Tobago 🇹🇹 at Trinidad on October 2017 should be a good one, along with the events leading up to it.

    • @m.c.martin
      @m.c.martin 4 роки тому

      John McKeon it was ironically Karma for the MLS with holding Kewayne Jones (Trinidad’s best player) from leaving his MLS team when the US players left a week before the game in Colorado. Atlanta FC said they needed him, but the game they said they needed him for, he didn’t even play. Then released him two days before the game versus the US. The US won 2-0 in Colorado. It’s no surprise that Karma would then haunt the US for its biased decision during that game in Colorado with the US losing 2-1 and missing WC.

    I remember that game. I was living in DC and my father was visiting me for the weekend. It was a very cold day and after walking around DC for hours we Stopped in a bar for a drink. The Game was on the TV and I remember looking up and seeing 61-7 and did a double take because I had not seen a team score 61 points in a playoff game like ever.

    I watched this game , the problem was the Coach . Jimmy Johnson tied Marino's hands so bad in the previous games with his obsession with " the run " , and had the team so out of sync they couldn't win in a pee wee league . Marino was a great QB .

    • @walker1984
      @walker1984 4 роки тому +1

      Well, the problem was during Marino's tenure as a Dolphin they lacked a run game. That's pretty much why he bowed out in the Super Bowl because there wasn't a Csonka to run up the middle to open up the pass when 49ers shut down the pass. Jimmy should've tried to trade up in the draft for a top tier RB prospect if he was determined to run the ball. I also think Dolphins receiving core left a lot to be desired, too.
