S2E2: A House Within A Shed by Tina Periquet

  • Most roofs are like a hat. They perch on top of the house to deflect the elements, but on a hot day they gather heat, and they can only take so much rain.
    In a land constantly battered by sun and rain, you need more than a hat - you need an umbrella. And, perhaps, so does your home.
    Inspired by the simple notion of a canopy floating overhead, allowing air to flow freely underneath while giving shade and shelter, Studio Periquet Galicia designed "a house within a shed". The structure is an arrangement of boxes set on a low tiled platform, which protects it from flood waters while providing a covered sidewalk all around the house.
    Hovering above is a large pitched roof, supported by four massive pillars - an archetypal image of human shelter, deconstructed to respond to the realities of a tropical environment.
    Space, air and light flow as freely inside as outside, from the open plan of the ground floor to the shaded roof deck below the canopy. The layout is flexible, able to adapt to the needs of a growing family with an evolving lifestyle. Tall windows bring daylight deep into the core of the house, while creating a stately rhythm of light and shade that both calms and uplifts.
    The result is the best-selling model of Magis Homes' design-and-build platform. Aldo - a sheltered house.

    That roof is a simple, brilliant and purposeful design element. Nicely done.

    Detaching the roof is a brilliant idea. Periquet is so right making a case for BEAUTY too. Our city is becoming a salad of banal and forgettable buildings. Well done Uncommon.

      She’s on a different level, for sure. Thanks for watching. Again.
      We’re going to steal your “salad of banal and forgettable buildings” line. If we put it on a protest shirt, royalties are in order.

    Not only is the concept of promoting much-needed air flow genius, but the design also stands out amongst the same-old concrete structures one sees all over the city. Well done!

    "You need to aim for beauty before it happens." Tell that to the developers in this country. Abroad, people line up and pay to see good architecture. Most of what is built in our cities is future landfill material. Beauty is better than ugly. Beauty is intelligence. Thank you for putting this point of view out there.

      "Beauty is intelligence" -- can we steal that line? Very well said. Beauty isn't decor. It is intelligence. Proportions. Precision. Why put out things in the world with no spirit in them?

    I have never seen a house with a detached roof! This is a very beautiful and unique approach. I also love how they pointed out how some of houses are designed to please the eyes, but it will eventually cause an inconvenience in the long run especially that we live in this tropical country.

    • @UncommonPH
      @UncommonPH  Рік тому +1

      Yes, the house is cool inside in spite of the large windows. The wall system isn’t typical - a refreshing break from the country’s love affair with concrete hollow blocks - helps too. Something to consider when designing for the tropics.
      Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.

    This house demonstrates that thoughtful design can transcend mere aesthetics and become an integral part of the human experience. I can imagine how living in this house can enrich the soul.
    The use of muted materials, the incorporation of ample natural light, and the integration of the environment into the living space...It's a sanctuary that doesn't stand apart from nature but rather becomes a part of it. And the way she articulates experiences through spaces...brilliant.
    The uniqueness of this home lies not only in its visual appeal but in the way it challenges conventions and forges its own path. It's a living piece of art, a true testament to the idea that a house should be more than just a shelter; it should be a reflection of our aspirations and a source of inspiration.
    Thank you for a wonderful 8 minutes. I hope you continue to share with us uncommon houses.

      Also I've noticed they don't care much about how it will look from the outside, as long as they achieve what's important from the inside, natural lighting ,cross ventilation etc and also they put a lot of vegetation in and out..

      Thank you for your comment. May we know what size interests you? That will help us in our hunt for builds that might be meaningful for you.
      Whatever the size of your home, a good designer can make a space look and feel bigger than it really is. Aldo is far smaller than the homes in episodes 1 and 2. It feels big because of its proportions, the height of the ceiling, its open space plan. Notice the use of tall windows and the light reflective surfaces. The folks at Studio Periquet specialize in this.

    I love the interior of the house, it's clean lines, the spaciousness, the huge windows, and the over all aesthetics. But I hate the exterior, it reminds me of buildings at Ateneo de Manila

      @UncommonPH  Рік тому

      Thank you for the insightful comment. We hope your experience in Ateneo was good -- in spite of how you remember the buildings. How does it remind you of the Atenean Campus? Is it the bricks? Would it move you if that part was made of glass or stone?

      @@UncommonPH yes, I think the use of bricks was what reminded me of Ateneo buildings. No, my experience at Ateneno was not a happy one that's probably why I had that gut reaction when I saw the exterior. Stone, glass or steel would be preferable materials if this were my house.

    I wonder also if this would work for a larger single story house or even a duplex townhouse so it could be made to be more affordable as so many are in need in the Philippines of a Strong simple house that can survive. I like the concept though.

    With what I have understood in doing design as a career, both architecture and interiors, is that design first should be about people. Design should be about responding not only for the need for shelter but should address other vital concerns as well as there are a variety and differing concerns between people. Good design is a solution to the many areas of concern that presents itself before even coming up with concepts or even shapes. I do not believe in a one solution for all design approach as the ultimate solution to every problem. Should I say that I can make a huge free size shirt that anyone can fit into? Besides..the need was just some cover for the body right?… problem solved! That is one vital area of concern but definitely will not cover every concern. There are different body types and each type will need a specific way of designing clothing to compliment both assets and hopefully extract some beauty on flaws.
    I’m not knocking out this design, I think it is quite nice clean and looks very liveable KUDOS tot he designer! However, I just don’t see how a structures looks from the outside, after one sees a good house as he passes by the street, can dramatically improve one’s quality of life. Yes, I am concerned about how a structure looks on the outside but maybe not as much as most people in general would be. My own personal view

    • @SPQRomanJr

      Did you listen or are you just expressing your opinion?
      As for the second part, I've been inspired by architecture the same way I can be affected looking at art, sculpture or even a car. I can also be negatively affected by bad architecture -- like seeing some homes in my neighborhood. Many people aren't concerned about the exterior because they spend most of their time indoors. Imagine what would happen if we actually cared about the way our neighborhood looks? There is actually science behind this, but regardless -- if anyone is going to design or build, why can't it be functional AND beautiful? I understand only a few architects can do both and they command appropriate fees, but that's the thing -- because of low ambition/standards, we are forced to live with bland architecture like we live in Eastern Europe under the Soviets. Surely we can do better.
