  • A young architect's first and ambitious project was to transform this post-war home in Cubao into a micro cinema. Architect Justin Guiab and his partner Jondi de Guzman designed Sine Pop, retaining most of the home's original features and planting a bamboo forest in lieu of additional parking.
Architecture by Justin Guiab and Jondi de Guzman
Produced by Gino Cariño, Jar Concengco, Paolo Periquet
Directed and Edited by Jar Concengco
    Additional Video by Omar Despabeladero
    Drone Footage by Gino Cariño

I used to hang out in this house before it became a cinema house. I am so happy that they kept a lot of the original structure in tact.

I am from Cubao and I always pass by this house when I go to McDonald's. Always amazed by how beautiful the exterior was, it is minimalistic and zen. Now I stumbled upon this video and I am thankful that you featured this so I can know what it looks like inside.

Now, my frustrations and regrets are growing not taking architecture and seeing this beautiful design and aesthetics in a home. Kudos to the architect and designer of these beautiful homes in the country. Even the seemingly unfinished wall outside looks gorgeous and unique, I must add.

By using vintage furniture and structural elements and combining them with modern technology, they have created a unique and affordable space that celebrates the past while staying current. It's a great way to honor the past while embracing the present.

Let Architects Justin and Jondi know that Sine Pop brings peace to its visitors and that it alters your perceptions of what frugal architecture and nature represent overall.

You’d fit nicely in our conversations. We wanted to be architects too.
We do this to celebrate great architects, but also to take a trip in their heads. We’re lucky to be able to walk through projects with them - in a way, it’s like a case study of architecture.
In any case, it might not be too late. Philip Johnson became an architect when he was 39.

Organic structures, unpretentious. The cinematic glass windows remind me of harry potter’s animated wall art but this one is better in all aspects bcuz man and nature tell stories in real time that cannot be replayed , it’s always a one-time scene, unique like a fingerprint. Moss was mentioned, it must be amazing to see a natural wallpaper as enhancement to the space. Bamboo as featured ornament and design element adds the right amount of color and movement in contrast to the grayness and stillness of concrete. The plant brings into the place its own musical score. Everytime the wind or breeze blows, a different tune is played. Arashiyama comes to mind. You see, i am a Maximalist. Very much the opposite to yours. But i love what you have done here. May your tribe increase.

Floor windows get dirty when the rain bounces off the ground. Having cinema windows is genius. Also the bamboo hides the giant buildings next door.
I disagree with the caveman bathroom. Guys pee standing up will splatter on those concrete pores. I guess he has several maids to clean up after him.

TLDR; who do I contact to make a Japanese style house in the Philippines? ...
Japan OFW here. Wanting to build a Japanese style house in the Philippines. I've been scouring the internet for a knowledegable architect who's obsessed with Japanese architecture and in the Philippines but I can't find one. All I see - so far - are "Japan inspired" houses which are too luxurious and/or pretentious and has too much fluff. I can't sleep at night because of these pretenders. The videos uploaded in this channel (+brutalist video) are by far the most Japanese thing I've seen.

  • @SPQRomanJr
    @SPQRomanJr Рік тому +1

It's a relief they didn't tear down the house, but there is something contrived about this... The old vernacular house has all the good proportions, details, high points of light, and the new parts are dull, flat and disconnected from the total concept. Doesn't there need to be human engagement to be "human centered architecture"? Even the garden is derivative -- why not a modern Philippine garden?
Love your channel, but the music from Ep1 to this one has been getting progressively worse. Hoping for better. Where is Ep6?

Hiii I agree with some things you’ve said 🙏🏽
We wanted to hide the cinema from the street to make it as invisible as possible so bamboo was the best option. We tried to use an endemic species of bamboo initially, but later on we went with pole bamboo for aesthetic purposes. 😢
About how you noticed that there is a lack of humanness in the structure of the cinema. Im not sure if it is a lack of humanness, maybe it is more of emptiness? This was part of the intent, so that people who would walk into the space would be forced to retreat into themselves. 💕
There are crystals hidden in specific areas in the cinema to enhance this effect.
Thank you for taking the time to write your insights. ✨
