I was the Sound Recordist on this. We had a man in the sea (wearing a dry suit) with a gun mic on the end of a pole radio linked back to me. Dylan hated water, so his performance is even more special! The shoot didn't start for three days because of the bad weather. Sound wise, the greatest moment was actually hearing the pssst of his dying cigarette at the end. A lot of Guinness was drunk on that week!
This is an incredibly funny and moving short film that I've kept coming back to over the years, thank you for your excellent work!

I use this short in class as an example for my creative writing students, and I was actually just bragging on that pssst sound effect and the significance of it in my lecture. Great work!

@@sfoster.23 As a writer and a creative writing instructor, I'd say that it does need a point, but that Wes clearly missed it.
here are so many themes behind it. Its man whole life in fact. In this world he is bounded to many things (not a free man). When helps comes, does not realizes but shouts and feels sorry when opportunity passes, kills other to save himself, no one can help even other people cry in his grief but do not help him. Like big lady people first don't listen and even if some one listens something bad happens. At last death takes away sorrows and griefs.
Those of you who are nitpicking at the realism of a somewhat surreal dark comedy film: I wonder how come not one of you pointed out the fact that both dudes survived a 40 foot drop onto a beach with their feet encased in concrete. They should at least have broken both legs.
I think it's simply a look at ones life through an allegory. Imagine you are the main character: A doomed guy (this is you) who knows he's doomed, joined by another guy (this represents people around you in life) who is suffering a similar fate, ultimately dies trying to force you to save him when you can't (save me attitude), the main guy (you) gets deperate and almost drags the raft guy down (endagering others for personal survival?), and ultimately has to accept his own death (No choice eh?)
I've been to this beach. It's usually very deserted and the cliffs are unclimbable. When I was a kid we used to see how long we could bear to stay there at high tide. We'd plant our toes in the sand and watch the waves. We'd always whisper while doing it - even though we knew we could climb the stone steps at the side and go up on safe ground any time, it was still sort of disquieting. That was probably only because we heard about a man who once couldn't find the steps in the dark.
The genre is called "Theater of the Absurd". It refers to all the avant garde stuff the chief theme of which is the pointlessness of life. The filmaker here is saying that life is nothing but a slow death. Trying to avoid that death ultimately fruitless and often ridiculous. You're going to end up dead whether you are a bigwhig or a nobody. And you are better off enjoying what time you have. Maybe with a cigarette.
As I’ve mentioned in a previous comment, I was the sound recordist on this and the pssst of the cigarette actually happened as Dylan slowly lowered himself into the water!
you are assuming the block is lighter than him. If the block is say 30x40x40, that makes it about 250 kg much heavier than dylan moran. under water it would sink into the sand and get very stuck
@KryptonKyote look it up in the dictionary mate, "fishes" is now considered to be correct plaural for "fish". I first saw it in the new biology textbooks
He has said there's a little bit of bernard in him but he considers bernard a sociopath. When i spoke to Dylan he was incredibly sweet and not like bernard at all.
Do you have ANY idea where I can see A Film With Me In It? I'm in Canada, and really want to see it. Is Did it get a real release anywhere, or is it online for download? Any help is appreciated.
Does anyone else remember those Totally Twisted screensavers by After Dark in the 90’s? This reminds me of the toxic swamp one where the guy wearing concrete shoes slowly drowns among the deformed swamp fishes. You could even chose to decrease or increase his lung capacity. what was the point of the film though? Makes no sense..
Wes O' Duinn does a film need a point?

This is too good. Honestly, this could go feature length and I wouldn't get bored. Dylan Moran is an under-appreciated genius.

This is fucking brillllllllllllliant and a half. I love everything Dylan Moran does, he is a comic genius
Dylan Moran should act more, and not just in a Simon Pegg comedy, but in a good dramatic flick. I love this guy to tears.
I think its more supposed to be the various stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance.
I love it when Dylan coughs!
no one does it like him!
'England!? England!'
..'Northern Ireland'
*Sobs* Goodbye!
'Seeyalater'

the jeeezus part and northen ireland part are just comedy gold oh my god it is said in such a great way i have it on repeat for 10 minutes straight

It fantastic that they finally upload this film. I was waiting for it for such a long time!
Thanks for the uploader! ;)
(Greenness)
Loved Dylan in A Film With Me In It too! I was very amused by such a simple concept.. great work.
Here we are now, all the lads
Ive been waiting to see this since I saw the teaser. Brilliant stuff!
That was awesome. Such a thin line between comedy and tragedy :)
i think i'm in love with this film...and dylan moran
I've been to this beach.

I have no idea what the fuck just happened, but I'm now pissing with laughter so that's okay.
Love this!
How wonderful. I enjoyed this short very much.
Thank you for uploading this, I had no idea it existed!
he is SO much like Bernard black in this !!!
wow this is great filmwork, absolutely the best acting
That was quite strange, funny and dark........nice!

This definitely reminds me of Becket's plays. Very Becketian in theme.
I don't know if I should laugh or cry, but I liked it.
The humor barely covered how profoundly depressing that was as an allegory for life.
i love these short films
This is what I show to people when I have to explain what black/dark comedy is.
+Sam Leheny wait this is supposed to be comedy?
+kurpingspace productions Yep. Black comedy (or dark comedy). Basically making comedy about typically morbid, or "dark" subject matter.
reminds me of those dream scenes in the sopranos, especialy the end when it got unbelieveably surreal
"What if I did have a book down my trousers"
Agreed with you two. I even would not have liked this piece that much without having seen Waiting for Godot. Moran would fit perfectly.
Highly amusing, my sort of thing certainly!
It all makes sense horray :)
Love this short film- Dylan's great in it
Love the kazoo in the end
this is fantastic.
I love Moran's work, never fails to make me laugh
It was filmed at White Rocks Beach, Portrush for those asking earlier in the thread.
the movie is called "A Film With Me In It". It's got Dylan Moran in it, and I want to see it.
Where the hell did he get a light to spark up his cig is what I wanna know xD
omg i love dylan moran
Great stuff, love the intro graphics too!
That little "ffst" sound of the cigarette at the end topped it off :)
As I’ve mentioned in a previous comment, I was the sound recordist on this and the pssst of the cigarette actually happened as Dylan slowly lowered himself into the water!
@@andrewhalley3489 thanks for bringing me back here.
"oh jesus, oh jesus" fecking legend
I like the music at the end.
fucking brilliant. 'england!' 'Northn ireland' hilarious. this man is a legand.
Good. Its an awesome series
fishes can be use if youre refering to two or more fish in different species.
@BeezyFilms: It is on front page because it was made in Northern Ireland and today is St. Patrick's Day.
I loved the air fighting scene. They were throwing punches as if there was a chance of hitting the other one. Great film.Rated it a 5.
Dylan's a stoic dude standing in the sea all that time!
You don't know how to appreciate it, there are several interesting things about it, just like a "painting" most people say is shit on a museum.
i would describe that as some very very dark comedy
absolutely LOVE it!!
DYLAN MORAN
This movie rocks
fishes is a real word.
awesome! Dylan Moran is brilliant!!!
Father Peeweestairmaster
I've been wanting to see this since I heard of it... I found it a bit hard to get a hold of. Thanks!
Perfect depiction of how a lot of humans treat their lives.
I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry
you are assuming the block is lighter than him. If the block is say 30x40x40, that makes it about 250 kg much heavier than dylan moran. under water it would sink into the sand and get very stuck
OH JESUS!!!-BILL BURR
This is great. i love dylan moran too =P
@KryptonKyote technically "fishes" is correct if used to describe all the different species of fish.
@KryptonKyote
Fishes can also be used as a plural for fish. Google it.
Also, The title of this movie.. is a phrase.
omfg 19 pages of fish conversation -.-
Almost Beckett! Lovely
@KryptonKyote look it up in the dictionary mate, "fishes" is now considered to be correct plaural for "fish". I first saw it in the new biology textbooks

"England!" *points*
"Northern Ireland"
Dude on dino: *sobs and swims away* LOL
For some reason this reminds me of one of Tony Soprano's dreams/nightmares.
+Nick T YES! The one on the boardwalk where he lights himself on fire.
excellent. dark. satisfying.
Awesome movie!
This is very good!
Hahahahaha, oh my gosh! That was so random but sooo fricking funny! I love it!
A brilliant, poignant, and compelling ten minutes.
this was great!!
Bernard stranded on a beach XD
Dylan is not bernard, but his performance here is!
this is my favorite film yet...although alot of it wasnt really explained and things were off, but hey, i liked it,.
Makes me kinda wanna watch Black Books all over again.
fantastic
good film
It's a good thing I didn't favorite this before I finished it.
They're both plural. I think fishes just means that you're referring to different kinds of fish. It's like the difference between beer and beers.
Dylan Moran is so funny. He is fantastic in Black Books.
how in the world did he light that last DRY cigarette?!?!?!
Shit that looks cold.
Do you have ANY idea where I can see A Film With Me In It? I'm in Canada, and really want to see it. Is Did it get a real release anywhere, or is it online for download? Any help is appreciated.
He says "northern Ireland" which makes the rest of ireland looks pretty brilliant.
That was horribly depressing
Does anyone else remember those Totally Twisted screensavers by After Dark in the 90’s? This reminds me of the toxic swamp one where the guy wearing concrete shoes slowly drowns among the deformed swamp fishes. You could even chose to decrease or increase his lung capacity.

wow, I dont' know where to laugh or cry! Sorta like Dylan's 'Expedition' thing.
Poor Dylan! If i'd have been the dude on the dino lilo thing i'd have saved him!
Very well. Do you watch Black Books?
@briandir1 Nah he's right, at the beginning he's at the bottom of a cliff by 6:20 he's a good distance into the sea.
Odd that the refugee starts crying as soon as he's told he's approaching Northern Ireland.
love it the Bono fantasies in Dublin :)..
