    The weird round corners are for the 'laptop' style lid to be easier to open - in the renders, it's pretty clear that the top front edge is straight across, and UNDER the top edge is where the lip starts to dip in. Like the little notch on the bottom half of a macbook, except allllll the way across. I don't know the technical term for it but it's a very common design in folding devices, a spot for the thumb to catch and pop it open much easier in comparison to, say, the SP/DS Lite, which had no such thumb notch.

    • @GingerOfOz
      @GingerOfOz  2 роки тому +59

      Interesting, that makes a lot of sense. I thought that the shape was based on the N64 for some reason, but your logic makes a lot more sense.

    • @StormBurnX
      @StormBurnX 2 роки тому +25

      @@GingerOfOz I think it's interesting how the worlds of visual design / mockups and physical design / prototypes clash so strongly. As you mentioned, the shape makes it unusual to hold, and it definitely was designed by someone focusing on aesthetics. Perhaps it's preaching to a choir to say this, but I feel like it would actually be incredibly interesting to see you, Shank, or someone similar take a crack at re-making this, but with the focus leaning heavily on modernising/optimizing it, rather than trying to realistically copy the original look. This would certainly make some things easier - the hinge comes to mind for sure (and as someone who's built/owned/modded over 2 dozen DSes, that hinge nintendo uses is absolutely dreamy haha)

      @HyperMario64 2 роки тому +3

      @@jonnyb9843 I think in this precise form factor this is virtually impossible. Needs a lot more space for the track of the laser, the small motor must take quite a bit of space as well. Plus add some physical overhead to be able to insert discs like the Wii does (and the extra mechanic to suck in/eject discs).. If the handheld opens, you may get around it. Maybe if you get rid of the battery, still not even sure. And more importantly, the alignment of the optics seems really easy to mess up if you are going to assemble such a small disc drive. Would be an amazing feat.
      Anyway, I'm baffled the Wii can be trimmed to that extent. That build is wild, and about the battery that's absolutely not a low-power device to begin with so 1h30 is amazing!

    • @nesyboi9421
      @nesyboi9421 2 роки тому +3

      I honestly think it's possible, but the thing would probably be a bit *wide*
      Not necessarily thick though, you could probably cannibalize a disc drive from a Dell Optiplex, they come with some pretty thin disc drives.
      Only real issue would be to solve the problem of discs getting scratched while moving the handheld around, maybe sticking some small bits of foam in the drive to prevent the disc from hitting the top or bottom? They'd have to be really low profile. idk but that'd be the hardest part.

    The amount of talent here is amazing, I cant even seem to work a soldering iron let alone to design a full on console lol.

    The original Gamecube was portable with addons. It had a battery pack that attached to the bottom the same way the gameboy player attached, which powered not only the system itself but also the clamshell style LCD screen that attached to the top of the system.
    When you factor in Wavebirds and that it had a built in carrying handle, the system seems to have been intended to be portable in this fashion from the get-go.
