That reprogrammable cartridge is just so awesome and fascinating to me, I'm genuinely in love with it. I'm fairly young, so I wasn't really around when the Virtual Boy released, only ever hearing stories of how it failed, so seeing someone make a portable version of the console is just incredible to me. I know you couldn't do it with this one, but seriously, especially for the time, this was one of the things that made it possible to create the atmosphere they did in Wario Land.
I'm sure you made Gunpei Yokoi very proud. It's nice to see that his invention had, has and will still have lots of love from fans over the world. I am very sad he didn't get the success and love he deserved with the Virtual Boy. Thank you for making this so respectfully.

The handheld is awesome in its own. Everything else is just to appreciate all the effort put into it. So much thought and care was put into this project. Down to the look of the handheld. You could've easily went "I stuck a Virtual Boy in a 3d printed case with a screen" and people would liked it for that alone, but you didn't. You went the extra mile. Truly amazing.
This video inspired me to make a mod myself (although i am doing the exact opposite, i got a PSP with a broken screen and will turn it into a stationary console)
This is the most incredible handheld mod video I’ve ever seen. And I watch a lot of them, lol. The way you described your process was so clear, it felt like I could be following along with you. And the amount of work and time put into this is absolutely astonishing. Your dedication to your craft is incredible. Truly.
The console itself is amazing and inspires me to want to take another crack at this hobby now that there's so much more cool stuff people are doing, but I wanted to give special props to the video; a lot of work went in and it shows! I love all the one off gags.
This... this is beautiful. The portable, the story, the video... it's all perfect. Shank, you have my unending respect for the amount of work that goes into everything you do. It shows me that there are still people in the world who take pride in working hard and doing a job well. My hat goes off to you, sir.
Great work! I'm an electronic engineer with a masters in software and I don't think I'd have the tenacity to do one of this. I really really congratulate you for all the hard work. Is super impressive and it must have feel nice when you finally finished. Keep it up man! First video I've seen and I'm already subscribed and liked it
The only way this could have been any better would've been to turn it into an autostereoscopic screen like the 3DS, and that's just _waaaay_ too much work. This is an amazing mod! I just wish you had shown it in action for longer so we could appreciate it more!
I honestly don't know why I'm here. I'm never going to plan on building my own console (can't event build my own pc) But there's something about how things are built, and how it is approached contemporarily. I watched a lot of makers on UA-cam for 10 years now, this video was just recommended to me from the almighty algorithm. I decided to put it on in the background and see what it was all about. I felt welcomed right from the beginning. I liked your intro and how you addressed those new to the channel. It gave me a good idea of what I was getting into watching while showcasing your attention to detail and passion for what your do. You have great production value and story telling skills. I was engaged the whole time. You had my full undivided attention from the start and it was no longer background noise while I tinkered. Great video sir!. You earned a like and subscribe from me:) Oh I forgot to include that I loved how you incorporated all your friends and each of their set of skills. I also enjoyed your sense of subtle dry humor
It actually might be totally doable right now except for the whole idea of finding room for a second screen in there. The Wii U pad is a whole lot chonkier than it actually needs to be and the mobo is pretty small.
Coolest shit I've ever seen!!!! I still have my virtual boy and the box and all the papers that came with it. It's in mint condition. I even have new sealed games. With that said I wouldn't hesitate letting someone like you turn this into the handheld it should have been. It sucks having to have the system sit on the table just to play it. Being able to walk around with it would be an absolute game changer. Keep up the great work
You'd be best to buy one a little beat up off of eBay for that (about $100). What you have is worth a small fortune to collectors and I for one would hate to see it torn up.
@Brian Donegan I understand your point of view but the reality is that Nintendo for a long time has no ambition to surpass itself or to take its products to a true level of technical progress. For example we have the current Switch that in the nascent 9th generation, is a machine with 7th generation hardware giving us extremely limited games and completely moving away from the hope of being at the same technical level as Sony and Microsoft today. The only true ambition Nintendo has today is money, greed to consolidate its position of power in the industry, rather than true progress and well-being for its consumers and fans, us wich with nostalgia and pain, they remember the days of the 90's when the Nintendo 64 was the most powerful and innovative gaming system of its time and without neglecting the exclusives of the brand. It is sad that the motto "Nintendo Play With Power" isn't possible anymore in these modern times where gaming machines are more powerful than ever and can do the impossible to give us titles of unmatched technical quality. The least Nintendo can (and has to) give to all us gamers in this era is a system (console) that runs at the same capabilities with the mainstream market, the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X
@Brian DoneganNintendo USED to have ambition. They USED to push boundaries, normalizing technological innovations. Their only current console is a statement that's not the case anymore. "Switching" concept itself was done by Sega Nomad in 1995, PSP Go in 2009.
@Brian DoneganAnd just look at Nintendo's most recent announcement of a Switch upgrade after 4 years. No significant improvements or changes, like the GBA SP & Micro, DSi/XL, and New 3DS/XL before it. Only a few tweaks and an OLED screen. Nintendo is playing it SAFE right now, not being ambitious.

That never would have happened if not for everything being drastically marked down. We played it all the time till the clip to connect the stand to the headset broke off. Great memories.
Thats really wholesome, I'm really glad that there were at least some kids who seriously loved that console
I just came to look around for a couple of minutes.... and I watched it all in one go! Yours, what a perseverance and tenacity! Congratulations! I tip my hat to you.

Anyways it was a blast working on the code and spending too many late nights on Discord. I've proof read/watched this video too many times to give it another watch right now, but it's so good I'm sure I'll end up re-watching it soon. Can't wait for what's next in store.

Nintendo looking at this kids ambition and skill "Uhhh, we've got nothin."
@Brian Donegan relax chief. I was being humorous.
The least Nintendo can (and has to) give to all us gamers in this era is a system (console) that runs at the same capabilities with the mainstream market, the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X
you're absolutely right my friend. the work Shank has done in this mod is beyond amazing is groundbreaking adaptative engineering at its finest.
The 3DS now has a Virtual Boy emulator that supports 3D. Very cool.
