Modeling Ballast and Mud on our Model Logging Railroad

  • This week we are finishing up the dirt.. Mud, ballast, sawdust.. Sawdust?? Well it's a logging railroad so yes, SAWDUST!
We are using Sculptamold modeling compound. Often we also use Celluclay, similar yet totally different. Both can be colored with acrylic paint and have dirt or sand added for texture. We have several videos on building our model railroad on this playlist covering the use of these products:
    • Building our 1/20.3 sc...
    More on Mud:
    • Modeling Dirt and Mud ...
    • How to Build a Highly ...
AND we use "squirrel dirt" and "gopher dirt". Ground squirrels are fun and cute, as long as they are NOT in your yard tearing up your lawn, but we love to visit the thousands of them that live along the UP mainline in Echo Canyon. They are underground most of the year, but in the spring they come up and say hi! And beg for chips and nuts... So we feed them and take home the redish brown dirt they dig up. Already a loose power it great for modeling. We sift it through a kitchen strainer and use it on the layout.
We also use "golpher dirt". OK same thing, only from the golphers that destroyed Steve's lawn. They dig up rich black soil. Great in the forest on the logging railroad.
The question come up, why not just dig up dirt with a shovel??? What's with the little critters? Well, yes there is a poop problem, but they do all the hard work. No rocks, no roots. Just loose fine dirt... And after straining, no poop...no rocks, just super fine dirt that makes great mud.. and scale dirt.. AND mixes with either the Sculptamold or Celluclay!! Or can be pressed into the wet Sculptamold or Celluclay.
AND we use Yellow Dextrin. From the web:
"Yellow dextrin is manufactured by partially hydrolyzing Starch, using the dry roasting method in the presence of a catalyst. Yellow dextrin has low viscosity and is very sticky and hygroscopic in nature. ... Yellow Dextrin Powder is in the form of fine dry powder ranging from light to dark yellow and dark brown in color."
It's used in glue among other uses. If it gets even a tiny bit wet it gets sticky and fluid. It drys hard and mostly clear. We mix it with any loose power like dirt and spray it with a mist of water or alcohol and it grabs whatever surface it's on and stays there! Ofter loose dirt wants to run off making a real mess. This fixes that! And can be all you need to keep loose powers in place forever. If you have larger chunks you still need to follow up with diluted white glue from a dropper. Or Woodland Scenics landscape cement.

Dale and Karen: You have no idea how much your modeling techniques on the railroad have helped me and my wife. We are currently re-building our massive deck off the back of the house and these pointers transfer VERY WELL to 1-1...and to Slot Cars. Just sayin'. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Gromit! Love the “Wrong Trousers”. But more the floor railroad! We are back to having he odd Grand Day Out as the pandemic is mostly over over here. But look at all the work we’ve done on the railroad! The Pandemic Short Line? Anyway yes love British locomotives! It’s the colors that drive me wild.

When I used to walk along the tracks anywhere in Weber Canyon I always noted all of the cinders alongside the tracks. I've seen the Big Boys used for pushing Diesel units up the hill. Memories! Kayren you mentioned a wood burning stove! When I lived in Iowa many years ago we used corn cobes for our wood burning stove. Not much wood back there but lots of corn cobes. One of my jobs was to get a bushel basket full every morning.

Yeah during the pandemic at one point the only glue I could lay hands on was school glue. Used it once and then stuck it on the shelf because it is stringy crap! I guess it works for making slime. Anyway this was a great discovery that works better for ballast!

Thats looking really great, someday ill start doing model Railroading when get the money and room. the abandoned Railroad i mentioned earlier thats south of where i live, turns out it was Southern Pacific's South line. The SP acquired the line in 1924 from the El Paso and Southwestern RR. They ran the line until 1959, but the tracks wernt taken up until a year later. Ive found quite a bit of Railroad Spikes from the line and also from the branch lines...

    • @ToyManTelevision

I’m reasonably sure that’s what the Woodlands scenics scenic cement is. School glue deluded about 4 to 1, possibly 3 to 1 and a dash of soap added to break the surface tension. $10 a bottle for a bears or you can make a gallon of your own for half that.

It’s gauge one. 45mm. 1 3/4 inches gauge. Most of our trains are 1/20.3 scale. So three feet in that gauge. Perfect 👌🏼! But some are 1/22.5 scale. Meter gauge. Great for European stuff but a touch smaller than our 3 foot stuff. But much is 1/2” to the foot. 1/24 scale. So much smaller. We run it all but never together. Looks silly to have a 120.3 loco pulling a 1/24 car.... the water tank is 1/20.3. And the depots are 1/24. But it mostly looks fine..

We mix with yellow dextrin. About one part dextrin to four or five parts cinders. Or less dextrin. You can get it on the internet. It’s not common. It’s an ingredient in yellow glue. Super fine yellow powder. Gets sticky the moment moisture hits it. Let it dry. May need to follow up with dilute white glue.
