- The garden railroad continues to develop! We now have the connection to the inside finished and working well. The hill to the garage opening is completed, all waterproofing in place, track laid, and working from the "kitchen" through the bathroom and onto outside.
ALSO, the wiring from one end to the other is finished and working, with DCC and LocoLink, so the Connie's are now operating outside in the weather. Fears of DCC not working well in the harsh environment are baseless, everything works great, EVEN IN THE RAIN! Our system is overkill, we have a 10 gauge bus running under all tracks, and 14 or 16-gauge "drops" to EVERY RAIL. Soldered so that no rail joints are required to carry power, even though they do, a redundant power system! AND it has never failed us.
The Digitrax wireless is working fine. I had assumed we would need a range extender, but no. The throttle works well all the way to the west end about 75 feet from the controller, outside, and through two walls. One cinderblock.
We have been laying track in temperatures of 100º - 107º. which is not great, and record-breaking for Salt Lake City. The roofing we are applying over the OSB rooking "plywood" is heated to almost 140º in this heat making it difficult to instal but easy to cut and form. The rails end up at almost 170º!! To hot to even touch! The upside is they will never get hotter than this, and so they are as expanded as they will ever get to. So I feel safe to close all the rail joints knowing that as the rails cool the gaps will open but as the track is Llagas Creek Nickle rail it will not open very far. When I'm laying track in the cold I leave the joints open by about 1/16" or so to allow for expansion. In this case, no need to guess. 170º is as hot as it will ever get! Hi Robert. Really. 4 years. Half of it on Covid lockdown. Mostly. Utah lockdown was at least smart. As these things go. Anyway we avoided contact and built a lot of stuff. We are lucky we had sanctuary. Thanks 😊

I think Karyn’s right about the tunnel portal needing to extend out from the wall a little to act as a ‘mud room’ of sorts for keeping the weather out. That will serve as an effective flashing and also help to create an awesome 3D effect for ingress and egress.
Yup. But not too far. I’ve set it out 4”. I’d have gone more but the grade gets narrow there.
Good idea to build the outside tunnel portal out a little, but don't get carried away, or you'll end up with a hedgehog hotel! ;-)

What a treat it is to follow along with your progress and I’m glad to be able to support this content as a member. The idea of switching from HO to F is awfully tempting… ☺️ Have you thought about adding some drain holes to your benchwork? I know it’s waterproof, DCC will work in inclement weather, etc., but I just worry about standing water. Also, I understand your concern about having to mow under the benchwork, but I think a loop on the side opposite the portal would add a really fun operational element. I think you’ll really appreciate that too when hosting visitors, out and back makes it easy to operate when you’re chatting up guests.

Silverton Northern #34 and Coach #304 are looking very nice running as a Special Excursion and the Garden Railway is coming together very nicely. Beautiful video and lots of fun "screwing around". Hoping the 160-170° is as hot as the track will ever get. Thank you for sharing your experiences building your Garden Railroad.

A couple of comments.
I wouldn't call what you have considered failures, failures. I'd honestly say it was part of the learning curve for your area. Utah gets over a 100 degree temperature swing! That's extreme guy! And you found a way through that.
Awesome!
Running DCC and track power outside is possible. BUT!! over time you will have issues with the feeders and keeping the track clean for electricity to feed through.
Which is why alot of people go dead rail outside! Some DCC systems can deal with dead rail/battery power. Some can't.
Air wire works great, but is pricey!!!
The good news is you aren't using brass or aluminum rail!!

Looks good I do have a question if you're not going to put in any type of loops to have it run on the outside track are you just running it back and forth and not having the ability to have a continuous run?
I really wish I could have the loops. But it’s hard to get under the railroad and as I wander into my 70’s it ain’t easy. And mowing under the loops… so plan as of now.. and this may change, is a wye at the west end. Large enough for a large or two smaller or locomotive and caboose. Spring switches. So it could be automated. If this works out I may do the same at the east end. Then small things could run continuously. But for now, point to point.
I love watching your videos and this indoor/outdoor layout is so cool. I especially love the handlaid track indoors. DCC is a challenge outdoors, I've operated on a large outdoor DCC powered layout and keeping the track and wheels clean is a never ending battle, which is why battery radio is taking over in large scale, even though it's proprietary, a lot more expensive, and you have to recharge batteries. The water doesn't allow enough current to sneak through to mess up a DCC booster, it would only mess up current detectors if you're detecting occupancy. The UR93 and DT602D with the RF28 radios have much better performance than the older RF24 radios in the UR92 and older throttles.
Finally after a 2 Year wait for riding the Ely, NV train. I had a great time. Said Hi to Dirt the cat. 14 years old. Anyway I hope you don't mind. They are talking about 1 year to Ping Pong a train to and from the white pine museum and about 10 years at 1 million per mile track re-open to Mc Gill. Plus they might be looking at doing freight too. Grain of salt on the might. Plus one more shout out for the closed 1980's Drug Store in Mc Gill. What a hoot. Sorry for hijacking your video.
Your layout is amazing. When I built my mobile G gauge railroad that was 1:29 scale. I used 10 gauge wire with light switches and houses plug it made setting up real easy. to power my layout. I never had problems with low voltage for my layout. My layout was D.C. it was a fun layout but I had no room to run it . That's why I got into On30

Here's a thought: Put a runaround or turntable at each end of the line. Then you can run in the right direction instead of backing all the way.

ooks great, keep up the good work. You can cut the "Mickey Mouse" ears off the toggle switch. You don't need them on a single switch box, and they will fit better with the cover on.

A thought on reverse loops.
What about just doing a narrow track bed and track. Then building it on a hinged section that can be raised when not in use.
Wish I could send a drawing. The idea is to have your loops and then be able to raise them out of the way when not in use or yard maintenance was needed.

A train track in the bathroom?!?! I can just imagine someone sitting on that toilet doing whatever, then a train comes along and either whistles or sounds it’s horn as it enters the bathroom.

Being serious about that, where in the bathroom are the tracks being run? I wouldn’t want to see what happens if there’s problems with the pipes, toilet, or if there’s one a shower or tub….?

Best time this summer. Gee. 103 yesterday. And still 81 at 1:00 Am. But dusk. Usually only 90° or so. Normally this time of year 70° or so at dusk.

Hay wow its looking good, nice evening pics of the lights and sunset. As to keeping critters out of the tunnels I've had good luck using an electronic device for getting rid of rodents, runs on 120v off the wall so you can leave it on all the time, rodents of any kind just don't like the sound...

It's looking amazing, can't wait to see the trestle. The outdoor tunnel extension sounds very cool. What are you thinking of using to make it? I was thinking that the two lines that dead end to the wall by the tunnel portal of the building, could be used to have a coal mine. What type of scenes are thinking for the main line section in the restroom? Will it be anything humorous?
For now the two lines will just end. But it screams for something cool. The portal is western cedar. Mostly finished. Just needs bolts. Bathroom is Yellow Creek Junction. Only a backdrop. No room for more. But a building flat of the depot. Like it to be a grassy area.

I was wondering Where did you get the lanterns you have hanging and did they come ready to use or did you all do magic on them . If so what parts did you use and where did you get them AND do you have a Video on how you made them ? ? ? Thanks ..... I ask because I need around 300 of them for my 24" scale layout on my ranch . Ihave just over 3 miles of track now and hope to add another 3 miles in the next 2 or 3 years . I have 160 acres total with a 22 acre lake on it . We have a xmall crew of around 50 people .. Thanks for the help ....
Hum… I don’t think we did a show… posted it for sure.. but we made them. Not complicated. The flickering flame is. A bit. But the down light is nothing. It’s a “puck light” for campers. Magnetic. They just stick to the bottom of the lantern. 12 volts DC and the polarity needs to be correct. But drilled a small hole near the edge as the wire is at the edge and that’s about it. The flickering inside light is also 12v dc. It’s a campfire kit for model railroads. Tricky. If I had it to do over I’d just use a 12v led. No flickering. But I’m happy with them. Should we build more I’d make them the same so they match. If I needed hundreds of them… well I’d get lots of help! Check Amazon for the puck lights. Black is hard to find. Most are white.

Hi. Well the big thing is the grapevine. Planning a planter box on the wall behind the ramp to the garage. But what to plant.. like to try Alberta spruce. But probably won’t work in a planter box. Rosemary for sure. Something that hangs down. Not sure what.

How far apart do you supply power to the track?
Every rail! So power never needs the rail joiners. So 6’ to 6”. Just depends. Lots of work. But it never ever screws up.
Very cool! But I have to ask when will model railroading end all this nonsense of track power and go to on-board batteries and RC control? I get it for small N-scale because the batteries may be way to cumbersome but for larger scale railroads, and especially outdoor layouts to me it would be perfect. And now even power tools are beginning to use these flat batteries (as in your phone) that are “stacked” - so they are much smaller, lighter yet provide equivalent power and time as the standard battery pack. The only time it may not would be if there was a display garden layout that operated for several hours (like the one that is at Epcot in front of the Germany area).
Many are doing that. I’m planning to have one locomotive running on “airwire”. Some real advantages. But as I love to have lots of locomotives it’s really expensive.

How about a snow shed also? The laser force field will protect you from the squirrels or other rodents. Really if you have concern spray the are with mint oil. They hate it and will stay away. Another story how I found that out.

It’s mostly “sound deadening board” from Home Depot. Not as good! We also use cement seem board. Also from Home Depot. It’s homosote. But in 4” strips. And extruded foam board from.. you guessed it.. Home Depot. But our friend Don gets 4x8 sheets at a large lumberyard. Not sure where…
