  • Our hunt for code 215 rail takes us back to see Adam Pinales who has torn out his garden railroad and said we can have as much as we need. But mostly we want to see the progress on his 7 1/2 inch gauge outdoor railroad and his new HOn3 layout.
    Last time we visited Adam we saw his huge N scale Denver and Rio Grande layout. His goal was to build every piece of rolling stock owned by the Rio Grande in the 1950's. He did that too!! Anyway, the dumpster fire that was 2020, after the earthquake and hurricane his basement flooded (nothing to do with the earthquake or the hurricane or the dumpster fire) But all the sheetrock needed to be replaced and Adam saw this as a sign he was supposed to change to HOn3. So.... the new layout is coming right along, BUT the big thing we wanted to see was the arch bar wheel truck in 2 1/2 scale he 3D printed.
    Now, the printed truck can not run, it going to be used to pull molds and use the lost wax process to cast the wheels and basic components in steel. YES he's plan is to sell them and you will be able to buy a pair if you want them, SOON.
    ANYWAY as the 7 1/2 inch gauge railroad has taken over the whole yard, the #1 gauge was torn out. (Yes, it will be rebuilt after the dust settles on the build of the 7 1/2 gauge railroad) The garden railroad was built with #Llagas Creek code 215 rail. And the new garden railroad will be a much larger size rail so when deer step on it.... ANYWAY, I digress. He offered to give us any rail we want! But it was only when we grabbed the track that I realized it was aluminum rail... Now I knew that when he built the railroad, but it just never sank in.. Anyway will not work for us as we are using code 215 nickel steel rail...
    THE SAGA OF THE RAIL...
    When we started the logging layout we bought 24 feet of rail from Mike at Llagas Creek. It worked great, looks great and so we decided to buy the needed 13 pieces of rail to finish the logging line. We have a desire to support our local hobby shops because losing all a community's hobby shops is not just a shame, it often destroys the hobby in that area. SO we ordered a bundle of rail from The Train Shoppe. Who gets most of their products from wholesaler Walthers. The bundles from Walthers are only available in bundles of 10. SO we ordered 10 from the Train Shoppe - Walthers and 3 from Mike at Llagas Creek. Mike ships rail in PVC pipe with caps on the ends. Because they had so much rail destroyed or lost by Fed X or UPS. But Walthers shipped the rail loose in a large box. And by the time it arrived at the Train Shoppe there was only one rail in the box. And it was halfway out of the box through a small hole worn into the cardboard by the loose rails.
    SO we moved onto building the locomotive shop. No rush. Covid lockdown for, well, A YEAR SO FAR??? Anyway. No rush. So after several weeks, the replacement rail came from Walthers. This time the box was totally empty. SO Jeff at the Train Shoppe said "I give up! Get it from Llagas" And Fed X said not our problem, bad packing, and Walthers said not our problem, Fed X screwed it up. So in trying t help the hobby shop out they were out $300. (good news, Walthers has agreed it's their problem, and will cover the loss)
    AND the replacement rail just came from Mike at Llagas Creek. AND he threw in an extra rail just because. And we will continue to support the local shops because it's really important to do that.
    What does any of this have to do with Adam and this week's show? Nutten. But it's a good story.
    More from Adam...

    Isn't he concerned that someone might mess with his equipment that's out in his front yard? I don't know what it's like with vandalism over there but based on what I'm used to, without even a modestly sized fence people are going to either get curious and poke around or just straight up vandalise whatever isn't nailed down tightly enough

    I have to ask
    If someone made a model railroad in 2 or 3 foot narrow gauge would the FRA have to be involved in order for it to be certified for use ?

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  3 роки тому

      Hum... well yes and no. The Knotts Berry farm Railroad is not certified by the FRA. Of course it’s inspected by California inspectors who examined rides because they haul passengers. And the FRA does inspect their steam engines. The Disneyland railroad is an actual corporate Railroad and falls completely under FRA regulations. If you’re going to haul passengers or cross state warrants you’re definitely going to need to be an FRA railroad. However if you’re building something on your own property for your own personal use, not hauling passengers In exchange for money, you’re pretty much on your own. But that also includes your liability!

    Actually, you definitely can use concrete as roadbed. There is a 1/4 scale railroad in Michigan that embedded all their steel rail in concrete. It seems corny, until you realize they build it like that so that when the land floods, it doesn't harm the railroad. That worked flawlessly for decades

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  3 роки тому

      I guess it depends on the land. A friend laid #1 gauge on cement. Used a concrete extrusion machine for edging gardens. By the end of the first summer the track was broken. Note to self. Don’t anchor the track to the concrete. Within 2 years the concrete was cracked in about 5 places. A year later the cracks were offset about 1/4”. Not much but no way to have track on it. Tore it all our and filled the channel with small gravel and no more problems. We have a trolley line in the hood where the track is set in concrete. No problems. But if you look close the slabs move all over the place. But the trolley track just moves with it I guess. But on a garden railroad of it moves 1/8” it’s a disaster.

    2 1/2 inch scale? 7 1/2 inch gauge? Are they the same thing or how many scales does this guy have?

    • @iannarita9816
      @iannarita9816 3 роки тому

      IIRC, 2 1/2 inch scale? 7 1/2 inch gauge.
      7 1/2 inch gauge refers to the gauge of the track, ie the distance between the rails. It can represent any number of scales, depending on the gauge(or distance between the rails) of the prototype. ie A standard gauge model(56.5 inches) will scale out to roughly 1/7.5. Whereas a 3 foot narrow gauge model will scale out as 1/4.8.
      Scale refers to the proportion of the model to what is being modeled. When scale is referred to in inches it usually means the ratio of inches to 1 foot. 2 1/2 inch scale works out to roughly 1 / 4.8 or a fifth of full size.
      This all goes on the assumption that I have not made an error in my math or memory.

    I'd rather have my Chevy made out of furnace scrap steel then have my truck made out of aluminum pop cans scrap😂😂😂 oh by the way the silver insulation in the Firebox of the furnace will be shooting out about few months from now don't be surprised I put up the same furnace

    Dale, have you and Karyn opted in for the Cocid-19 inoculation vaccinations. The reason I'm so curious is that when you're out visiting your friend's railroad modeling project prograss, you and Karyn were masked's up, but he wasn't, and it just made me think about it. I have received both doses of the PFIZER vaccines, but I will continue wearing a face-covering mask, whenever I'm out and about and until further notice. I'm taking no unnecessary or unforeseen reasons for a glitch on my part. I do understand many people will be referring to me as a sheeple. Your friend's model RR project seems to be very undaunting. If his new approach to a change in scaling for the out of doors complex seems to full of back-breaking tasks. Does he have any assistance, or is he on his own for the duration?

      Im up Wed and on the phone (hold) right now getting Karyn's. They dropped the age to 50 14 minutes ago. Adam has been both vaccinated AND had Covid 8 months ago. As a volunteer fireman he was required to get the shot. AND he wanted it!! In spite of being antibody positive. A year ago he was a "Trump" supporter. Thought the whole thing was the flu. But at work (AmtraK) 4 people got it.He gave it to his wife who was on Chemo. 2 of the guys at work ended up in the ICU. One died. So hes a rabid GET THE SHOT guy.

      It’s a swamp land. I like the swamp but you have to admit it’s a real swamp.
