2:52 - Nurburgring Fastest Lap Record Run
Another milestone on the 919 Tribute Tour! We are referring to 29th June, 2018. The 919 Hybrid Evo was on the starting grid at the Nürburgring to write motorsport history once again. The mission was to set a new record on the 20-kilometre Nordschleife circuit. The driver: Timo Bernhard. The result: 5:19.55 minutes.
Like almost no other racing circuit, the Nürburgring together with its legendary Nordschleife places supreme demands on materials and the skill of the driver. The challenging route weaving its way through the densely wooded and winding terrain of the Volcanic Eifel region is unforgiving and always presents a real challenge even for consummate professionals.
Records have been set, heroes have been celebrated and legends have been born at the Nürburgring for as long as anyone can remember. The 919 Hybrid boasts an impressive track record of victories at the Eifel circuit which is so steeped in history. When the World Endurance Championship made its first appearance in Germany in 2015, the two Porsche teams claimed a rousing first and second place finish. First on the podium were Hartley, Bernhard and Webber. Dumas, Jani and Lieb occupied second place. The successful trio of Bernhard/Hartley/Webber were again the first to cross the finish line in 2016, and the sister car finished in fourth place. The next first and second place finish came in 2017. Once again Bernhard, Hartley and Bamber had their noses in front, closely followed by the Porsche trio of Jani, Lotterer and Tandy.
The 919 Tribute Tour continues - be part of it! The next stop is the 25 Hour VW Fun Cup at Spa-Franchorchamps from 6th to 8th July, 2018.

thx, you're a good man
Hahaha! Me too honestly. It was too intense.
I don't think the tire engineers get enough credit for designing a tire that can get that high of grip and those kinds of high speeds
They don't last long at those extremes.
They get TOO MUCH credit. Drivers are starting turns at 180 MPH ( 300 KMH ) as they crest hills thus are blinded from seeing.
Making turn after turn correctly-with lethal consequences for error ...and remember that DEcelerating, causes a LOSS of grip??
Even watching in slow-mo is _hard to compute._ I'm sorry, but for all the respect I have for engineers? I respect drivers even more.
@@trumanhw wait, what? The weakest aspect of this vehicle, the most 'poorly designed' component is the Driver, not to say the driver is in anyway unskilled or bad, that is.
The engineers are doing triple-backflips to get materials and designs to operate like this without simply exploding.
The engineers certainty don't get enough credit, not even close. And they absolutely don't get 'too much'.
Michelin, France
You're absolutely right! The operating point of the tyres was designed as an absolute coffin corner.
In a german short-documentary they said that the tyres were designed to last exactly one lap. This is why on this day under these 'perfect' conditions they had to start as early as possible because otherwise the sunray induced degradation of the tyres would have led to a failure of this mission.
The result of this insane teamwork (driver, engineers, technicans and all the other supporters) on that day - wrote history.
From 150kmh to 340kmh was so quick, instant torque, very impressive!

@@ssjkillluah5935 Accelaration is nice and dandy, but without the proper steering geometry, the excellent engineering expertise in creating downforce without effing up the steering, the smooth brakes etc. you can have as much accelaration as you want and still don't get faster on a track.

Hitting 368kph (228.665mph) on the straight is mind blowing. Looking at the telemetry, it could've been a faster on certain sectors instead of shifting down due to grip. Well done to Timo and Posche.
My opinion is that they could revved higher just for the straight section with 9200+ rpm it would easily archived 390 kmh (2,5 3 sec time improvement at least)
@@O.A_Ih4teno0bs Even if they implemented a button to eliminate the rev limiter, i dont think the time difference would be over 1 sec and the limiter is 8.5ish K for a reason. Perhaps there are dangerous anomalies occurring with reving it higher.
@@frog382 engines doesn't die instantly if you are revving them high it is more of a longevity problem if you are abusing it sure but if they had a power band that optimized for it for example it dips down after certain rpm on dyno maybe thats why they kept it in that redline. its still doesnt makes sence in this case tho ,you are no longer accelerating because you ended your drivetrain ratio ,so you can rev higher and it will surely survive but the question is how many laps it will, in this case they are going for a hotlap record so it wont be a problem and we are talking about racing engines they arent going to live so long anyways. they are probably changing it every 5 10 races whatever unless there is a regulation that says you cant do what i meant i still think its going to be beneficial to do it at that straight line.
@@O.A_Ih4teno0bs I agree, but you mentioned it doesnt make sense, which is why i said engineers know the engine and the car beyond our knowledge and thats why i am sure you would feel satisfied with their decisions if you talked to engineers about it. I'm less surprised by the amazing engineering than the fact that it's possible for a human being to drive something as well as this when everything happens faster than you can blink. It's an amazing feat.
While watching my eyes started to burn and I realized I hadn't blinked. Must be insane to be the one actually driving.

Unbelievable. Takes my breath away every time I watch it. Timo, the 919, and the Nordschleife; what a combination.
There may never again be another hotlap like this. What a piece of automative history to be alive to witness. The thing that impresses me most isn't so much the speed in itself, but rather, the way that speed is carried through such technical sections of the track with insane amounts of grip and downforce to keep it stable. It's one thing for a car like the 919 to go fast on a flattish, purpose-built F1 track, but for it to hold its own against the fastest F1 drivers on a road course like the Green Hell, with all its elevation and camber changes and all those little bumps that are always ready to throw off overambitious or inattentive drivers, it's just incredible. So many stars had to align for this lap to even be possible, before we even consider the level of skill for the driver to execute within that small window of opportunity.
Nah, we will see a sub 5 in a few years.
Tech today (specifically flow simulations and EV tech) is developing at a lightspeed pace now.
And we could all well see a future EV ring record that will be a sub 4 min run, some special project to show of EV tech.
Next gen batteries (in a lab so a few years ahead) have a energy density of 0.7kWh/kg, so a battery that could easily do a lap of the ring could weight 150 kg.
So we might be a 919 EVO esque car with >2000 bhp running a lap well below 5 minutes.
Who knows what the future brings.
The question is of the ring organizers would allow it xD
This really is insane. I am a bike person, but this is alien level fast. I keep coming back to watch it in pure disbelief.

I've watched a fair amount of runs on the ring and I had to check that this was playing at normal speed.
Beautiful.
Me: It's scary to go over 150km/h on highway
Timo Bernhard, while going over 250km/h in corners: *another day in the office*
Jajaja
OMFG I never thought I’d see
the ring absolutely dominated at this level... 😳😳😳 my hats off to you and the team sir!
so impressive amazing drive
Absolutely AMAZING! 🏁
The fact that humans engineered this masterpiece and there's a human capable of driving it this way is amazing.
I know right, some of the coolest shit ever
Whites invented it. Nobody else could!
Imagine what would be a result of a badly timed blink at this speed.
1 second meant 65m of travel. A typical blink last for 0.1 seconds. In that time the car would travel 6.5m, that's about one and a half original VW beetles. Insane to see how far Ferdinand Porsches dreams have come from his first commercial success.
at this speed, you have to know blindly the track
he just need to see some marks of the track, the rest already happened in his mind
I can listen to this every day
This run and the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo one are so pleasant to watch.
Watching this, I wondered how it would compare to an F1 car - there is lots about this comparison online. I read that in theory an F1 car should be faster, but in reality the 919 is the fastest car on this circuit. Not bad for a 2 litre engine. And what a driver. With those reaction times his brain must be wired very differently to most other people. Impressive!
@Young Dre yeah well good drivers arethe ones still alive ....Bellof is dead of his own recklessness. It was bound to happen.
@Young Dre Timo Bernhard is one the drivers with the most long-term experience in the Green Hell. He and won 5 times the 24h race with Manthey.
He knows what es doing and was the best option for a safe and very fast lap.
BMW Williams did a run (more sort of a PR event) once, with Nick Heidfeldt driving, in the 2000s. But the F1 car was/is useless on the Nordschleife because of the lack ground clearence - iirc they were not even close to Bellof's time.
@@sanchezking6188 In 2007 on 2006 BMW sauber. They did not complete the lap, slowed down at the end for video footage. BMW/Sauber at the time estimated a 5:15.8. It was not useless. You can adjust the f1 car to the track. Using the current f1 cars it should be faster. Also the Porsche 919 Evo is not standard. It had been modified.
@Young Dre but that is a comparison that you just cannot make. Just like saying Hamilton isn't as good as Schumacher and both aren't as good as Senna. Things that just cannot be proven by any means. Different eras, different cars, different people. Don't discredit the driver just because you think that someone from the past would have done a better job.
The amount of force one would endure during this run would absolutely ragdoll the average human being. Timo is hardly "average". Excellent video👊
AMAZING! thanks!!!
I had to double check just to ensure the video wasn't being run at 2x speed. This guy lived 2x in real life. MAD RESPECT.
Think this is the most fascinating onboard record of street driving - ever. Even movie production can't compete.
Street driving??
That’s definitely a track, sir.
He was being jarred like crazy! How can he focus with that shaking?
Dam fine driving from the fastest car in the world
Great combo, great result...
I can’t get enough of this
Watching this lap is nuts. The car literally accelerated like its rocket powered.. literal instantaneous rocket power. Incredible. Kudos, humans, for making something worthwhile. In 2020 we’re distracted by social and political upheaval. We can’t let that stop our progress. Join a good team. Give it your heart.
Tribute to Stefan Bellof.
my first thought was...just one wish. i would like to see him in this car.
Steffan Bellof used the racing technology from 1983 and only 52 seconds slower than 2018 tech but Timo Bernhard is still a truly amazing driver.
Bellof did it with a manual gearbox, no electronics, and half the horsepower.
Juan Manuel Handal diminishing return, that’s the jist
@none it´s the identical track version
What a beast of a car + driver. Just stunning 💪
amazing work
Still gets goosebumps when the boost kicks in slowly..
I watched it twice, once as a passenger and then gain looking at the data. Stunning! Thank you for this.
Nice one!!! The sounds are as good as the sights
the car and the track is wonderfuel ........love both
