I love that he gets close enough to hear the water splashing off the car/drone. Awesome footage, props to the whole team that made this possible! Great to see these guys get the opportunity to make something as cool as this
Those shots where the drone lags just a little bit, and you get to REALLY see how explosively the F1 car accelerates away before the drone re-captures it's pace is... just amazing. Those low shots too- where the drone gets super close to the car and the ground give such a sense of speed and drama it's seriously incredible. If all F1 races were filmed with these things, I wouldn't miss a SINGLE race!!!
It was cool seeing the kick stutter as the driver goes just a little too fast in a turn and loses traction, and then quickly backs off the throttle and regains traction.
This thing pulls ~2000+ watts for a whole lap with all of the electronics inside of a tiny tube. They did this without blowing up the ESC, and they kept a clean enough signal for a stable video feed + GPS rescue + clean enough gyro signal to be flyable / no de-syncs. And they hit those speeds with all the added weight of beefed up electronics, stripped down action cam, and a battery large enough to sustain that load??? Hopefully those that haven't flown FPV can appreciate the work that went into this drone (even the initial prototype)! Absolutely incredible job by everyone involved!
I don't watch F1 but that was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Insane engineering, the rain made it even better because you could see the wake and the aerodynamics of the car so clearly. Watched the entire wet lap with my jaw dropped
@@tl1326 thats why you need to find a balance between the two. I never really said that there needs to be music at full volume blasting away, nor that it would make it better. I only sugested that that song would've fit to what was on screen

The RB20 in the rain followed by this drone is the best illustration of aerodynamics I've ever seen. The way that car slices through a wall of air is a thing of beauty.

The rain actually made it really aesthetic with the water showing how the air flows around the car, and the video game like pov showed how hard it is to keep control of the car when the driver pushes it to its limits which you can kinda tell with onboard cameras but it's not nearly as obvious as seeing it from above. Really cool project.
That lap of max with the rain may be the best F1 lap ever filmed. Even if he couldn't set a lap record, the spray from the rain, the slides as he puts too much power down, it's all so cinematic.

100% of the sounds were added. The whooshes, the F1 engine, all recorded externally and edited in. Not that this takes anything away. This was awesome, the fastest I've been able to get my drone is around 200km/hr. This is wayyyy better

I would watch entire races ONLY in this camera view. You get a real sense of the speed and skill of the drivers. This is INCREDIBLE. I can't wait to see this in an actual race, watching overtakes, etc.
That will be awesome. They probably be limited in where they can fly, though. Having drones potentially falling out of the sky onto the track could be disastrous during a race.
Same. Battery might be an issue, but heck, if they can provide this kind of footage with like 30 backup drones and charge 50 dollars for the drone view for a race I'd gladly pay. As long as we can get enough viewers the cost shouldn't be a problem.
@@someone11112 You're looking at a prototype, though. A few years from now this thing will look like garbage compared to the newer versions. I would expect quality to improve quite dramatically, especially with the rapid improvements in AI upscaling technology.
You can see the vortex es coming off the car! ❤ It's beautiful, great visuals and sound. Felt like the initial bad quality video was a VHS video filter, to make it look worse. Then we'd be surprised by the "upgrade video quality" 😂

Just look at the aerodynamics of that car none of the rain coming off the tires is going into the cockpit it perfectly goes around the side of the car by their high-tech aerodynamics is truly awesome. You guys did one hell of a job building that drone and just look at that footage you got. I'm glad it rained it looks so much cooler with the rain coming off the tires while you're going that fast
Yeah, I know I'm a stick in the mud for saying this, but the issue would be if the drone failed and fell on the track, especially on or in the way of a car.
im actually glad you got a shot in the rain, might not be the fastest due to the wet track, but the micro corrections max was making, the amount of water being pushed out the way by the car, the overcast sky, it just looks absolutely epic seeing a machine do all of this in the weather
Oh yeah watching the minute adjustments on the front wheels and seeing the rear end step out ever so slightly from time-to-time.. I think it was some more engaging footage despite it not being "Max speed" :P
depending on the operator it should be safer than the cars to be honest. I say that from an FPV perspective (which is what brought me here) as opposed to an F1 perspective so I might be talking nonsense. Point is, a professionally operated drone of that size following the track poses little to no risk to spectators. the speed through the corners is utterly insane, you cannot comprehend this from static position cameras, or even the temporary chase cameras. Even on board doesn't fully capture it, but this did. Wow, this is amazing.

Shots like these also give you a real sense to the skill of the drivers. On the wet lap you can see instances where the car loses traction ever so slightly resulting in a bit of a shimmy, the way that Max keeps it under control and maintains forward speed is awesome. Really shows that Max was trying to put in a good lap time and not just out for a relaxing lap.
They dry footage was super cool with Liam, but man the wet conditions on Max's lap added another level. That spray looked so cool coming off of the car.
This footage... unlike race day footage... conveyed SO MUCH SPEED. It really showed off how fast these cars are and even how much water is really kicked up. Would love to see this as a race day camera.
I would not be surprised if F1 incorporates this some how in the future. This just gives such an amazing perspective and shows you how fast these cars are moving.
it's also absolutely fascinating to see the instabilities and difficulties from the rain. i really gives a better feeling for what these cars actually do. that is such a win for any race sport.
I've watched F1 for more years than I care to remember and this has to be one of the most awesome things I've seen. A drone that can not only keep up with a modern F1 car, but also keep that car nicely framed whilst filming. Amazing piloting, amazing drone, very well done

Me too 1979 was my first F1 race because I was there in the pit lane during the race at Kyalami it’s amazing the drone didn’t catch fire or something… brilliant pilot all those obstacles as well.. and done manually.
10:38 sick to see the rain act just like you see in an an aerodynamic simulation. You can actually see how the wind's traveling past the sides of the vehicle.
These speeds, with THAT MUCH water on the track... I have a whole new appreciation for the driver, and the tire technology. I'm glad this was filmed in the wet. Huge props 👍
What most people don't realize by this drone footage...is that yes, this gives an entirely different perspective of the race but more importantly is how amazing the skill level of the drivers are. The vapor trail left by the cars means that anyone that is in the slipstream have almost zero visibility when racing in the rain. Truly amazing.
And that was a tiny vapor trail. Sadly, ever since Whiting died, F1 has become a sissy sport where anytime a car pulls off track, no matter how safely, they throw an SC or VSC. It started getting out of control and somehow even got worse after Massi was replaced with Niels Wittich and his buddy (I forgot his name). And they don’t even let them race in full wet conditions anymore. They’ve even thrown red flags for gravel!
honestly seeing an entire full lap from that perspective in the rain is absolutely amazing. You can really see what kind of difference it makes to the control of the car compared to the dry one. Also the water mist really highlights the aerodynamic features of the car. That's art right there.
The hidden artists of this video are absolutely the sound designers. You guys did an amazing job on the audio for the drone shots, since those couldn't be recorded from the drone itself.

Here I am just now becoming a fan of F1. Haven't even watched a race, yet and this is the first footage I'm really watching (aside from small crash clips etc. from over the years)
I don't know about the CHALLENGE aspect (I mean if the drone can more easily keep up now.. where's the challenge?) but the footage looks incredible.. the taillights illuminating the water plumes.. fantastic stuff.

The entire point was to see if the drone could keep up. They get the best car and the best driver but then the track is wet. Its a bit of an anticlimax. If you want the visualizer you can get this in another video, this was about going as fast as possible.

Not only that, but the scientic help watching the vapours coming off the back of the car and seeing how the car moves from that angle is amazing and probably well helpful.
@efallenJust look at how fast the correction took place, at absolute most it was still 0.8 of a second at most. For Max to correct it in that time, he was already correcting it in half that time, so around 0.4second at most. As you said, 99/9% of people would have instantly crashed it, and those that didn't would still be in for a wild ride.

I'm just amazed by how this ended up being a VTOL rocket, with propellers, but also the handling was masterful, and the beautiful showcase of the car's engineering, is
Woah - you truly get a sense of the speed, power, and aerodynamics at play. Instead of the car screaming past a traditional camera, you can HEAR the engine and transmission cycling through gears... and the rain spray turns the whole track into a functioning wind tunnel - you can see the vortices behind the wheels and car. Just a mind blowing perspective on this sport.
Yeah this is amazing, especially the fact that you can hear the car this well is amazing. But why don't we hear the sound of the drone? This makes it perfect for an actual race, just sound of the car but not of the drone.
I suspect, but do not know for sure, but this presentation is probably is using a mic mounted on the car for most of what we are hearing during the lap with gear changes and engine sounds. It sounds like they also may have added some swoosh effects when the drone is passing objects at speed and maybe even some other subtle audio effects. Typically drones don't carry mics because the noise they generate drowns out anything else - and this drone sounded particularly wicked - so if this IS a drone mic, that would be game changing.
Ngl, with the level of water behind that car, I legit was just screaming in my mind, “Hydroplaning! How on earth is he comfortable driving at risk of traction failure. 🤯”
The lower quality footage with the telemetry is the real-time video seen by the pilot, can't really go for filming quality on the operation critical feed
I think the drone has two cameras, the poor quality one is a live feed to the pilot’s headset, and the other camera records in HD and is saved to storage.
@@michaelchapman707 The following is my deduction from the video. The drone has 1 camera. The footage is transmitted live in low quality to the pilot but recorded in the drone in high quality. This explains why the footage has to be viewed after the race: they have to download it.
this footage shows really how incredibly fast f1 drivers reflexes are and how well max understands the car already. The speed at which he not only notices the rear slips and breaks out, but also adjust accordingly is truly mind boggling. Also this view makes for great visualization for racing lines while still giving the perspective of speed so one can better understand how familiar drivers have to be with the circuit to keep so tight to their desired lines, adapt in time when trying an overtake maneuver and sliding right back after
Also, notice how tight he's staying to the slightly dryer line from a previous lap. Absolute masterclass, and you already know Max sees a hundred things he could have done different on that lap.
It really is pod racing. Relative to how extreme the speeds are, it's also quite safe if you crash. Imagine the old 50s style ones crashing at today's speeds.
Yeah, this was their filming day before preseason testing. They don't get much time on track, and it's the first shake-out for a new car. This might have been one of the very first laps Max had in this car, and it was raining. The car control to put that lap together is out of this world.
Max is arguably the best driver in the history in terms of catching oversteering, many of his teammates said his car is undrivable for them because how extreme Max setup his car
@@letsburn00 your comparison to 50s cars is completely irrelevant, what does that have to do with Max driving in the rain here? F1 is still extremely dangerous. Sure, crashing into a tire and foam barrier isn't as dangerous, but car collisions are easily deadly.
the final footage is mind blowing. i don think there has ever been footage from that angle of a f1 car doing hot laps and staying with the car the entire time.

The wet lap was AMAZING actually, you could see the aerodynamics of the car, the clean air flow turn into turbulent... just perfect.
Not really turbulent - those are some pretty clean looking vortices.
This ^. Clean vortexes pretty much carry downforce generation in F1 cars.
It was just the water coming off the road from the tires, that’s not air your seeing.
PLOT TWIST. This was carefully coordinated so Adrian could get more AERO time to develop the car.

The rain actually made it really aesthetic with the water showing how the air flows around the car, and the video game like pov showed how hard it is to keep control of the car when the driver pushes it to its limits which you can kinda tell with onboard cameras but it's not nearly as obvious as seeing it from above. Really cool project.
Speaking of games, the drone flight reminded me of the fly-bys of the courses from "Diddy Kong Racing" and other games.

That lap of max with the rain may be the best F1 lap ever filmed. Even if he couldn't set a lap record, the spray from the rain, the slides as he puts too much power down, it's all so cinematic.

That's too risky to be done, FPV drones are not very reliable, if it crash on track, it'll become a dissaster very quickly.

I would watch entire races ONLY in this camera view. You get a real sense of the speed and skill of the drivers. This is INCREDIBLE. I can't wait to see this in an actual race, watching overtakes, etc.
I would literally pay $50 for a "Drone Only" view of an F1 or Indy race --- this is a real game-changer for spectator sports
That will be awesome. They probably be limited in where they can fly, though. Having drones potentially falling out of the sky onto the track could be disastrous during a race.
Same. Battery might be an issue, but heck, if they can provide this kind of footage with like 30 backup drones and charge 50 dollars for the drone view for a race I'd gladly pay. As long as we can get enough viewers the cost shouldn't be a problem.

@@someone11112 You're looking at a prototype, though. A few years from now this thing will look like garbage compared to the newer versions. I would expect quality to improve quite dramatically, especially with the rapid improvements in AI upscaling technology.
Footage of the wet lap were incredible; you can see all the micro adjustments/counter steers Max had to do to keep the car under control. Incredible!
Dry is faster but the wet lap was very cool. As you say, all the adjustments Max is making and the way the water shows the aero of the F1 car.

depending on the operator it should be safer than the cars to be honest. I say that from an FPV perspective (which is what brought me here) as opposed to an F1 perspective so I might be talking nonsense. Point is, a professionally operated drone of that size following the track poses little to no risk to spectators. the speed through the corners is utterly insane, you cannot comprehend this from static position cameras, or even the temporary chase cameras. Even on board doesn't fully capture it, but this did. Wow, this is amazing.

Insanely brave of the drivers to be willing to have a prototype drone that they lost control of at one point flying over their heads while driving.
Shots like these also give you a real sense to the skill of the drivers. On the wet lap you can see instances where the car loses traction ever so slightly resulting in a bit of a shimmy, the way that Max keeps it under control and maintains forward speed is awesome. Really shows that Max was trying to put in a good lap time and not just out for a relaxing lap.

This footage... unlike race day footage... conveyed SO MUCH SPEED. It really showed off how fast these cars are and even how much water is really kicked up. Would love to see this as a race day camera.
I would not be surprised if F1 incorporates this some how in the future. This just gives such an amazing perspective and shows you how fast these cars are moving.

I've watched F1 for more years than I care to remember and this has to be one of the most awesome things I've seen. A drone that can not only keep up with a modern F1 car, but also keep that car nicely framed whilst filming. Amazing piloting, amazing drone, very well done

These speeds, with THAT MUCH water on the track... I have a whole new appreciation for the driver, and the tire technology. I'm glad this was filmed in the wet. Huge props 👍
What most people don't realize by this drone footage...is that yes, this gives an entirely different perspective of the race but more importantly is how amazing the skill level of the drivers are. The vapor trail left by the cars means that anyone that is in the slipstream have almost zero visibility when racing in the rain. Truly amazing.

Unfortunately game footage from in-game follow cams have diluted how awesome this real life footage is.
And that was a tiny vapor trail. Sadly, ever since Whiting died, F1 has become a sissy sport where anytime a car pulls off track, no matter how safely, they throw an SC or VSC. It started getting out of control and somehow even got worse after Massi was replaced with Niels Wittich and his buddy (I forgot his name). And they don’t even let them race in full wet conditions anymore. They’ve even thrown red flags for gravel!
honestly seeing an entire full lap from that perspective in the rain is absolutely amazing. You can really see what kind of difference it makes to the control of the car compared to the dry one. Also the water mist really highlights the aerodynamic features of the car. That's art right there.
Someone seeing it for what it is! We're some of the first humans to witness physics play out like that with such detail and intent.

The hidden artists of this video are absolutely the sound designers. You guys did an amazing job on the audio for the drone shots, since those couldn't be recorded from the drone itself.

The foottage was just epic - the dry footage with Liam Lawson driving was brilliant.

The entire point was to see if the drone could keep up. They get the best car and the best driver but then the track is wet. Its a bit of an anticlimax. If you want the visualizer you can get this in another video, this was about going as fast as possible.

Yes the wet track led to slower driving and this made it easier for the drone to keep up.

Not only that, but the scientic help watching the vapours coming off the back of the car and seeing how the car moves from that angle is amazing and probably well helpful.
This footage needs to win an award. As a RB fan, Max fan, and 20+ years in video, I actually got teary eyed at this masterpiece.

For Max to correct it in that time, he was already correcting it in half that time, so around 0.4second at most. As you said, 99/9% of people would have instantly crashed it, and those that didn't would still be in for a wild ride.

Woah - you truly get a sense of the speed, power, and aerodynamics at play. Instead of the car screaming past a traditional camera, you can HEAR the engine and transmission cycling through gears... and the rain spray turns the whole track into a functioning wind tunnel - you can see the vortices behind the wheels and car. Just a mind blowing perspective on this sport.
Yeah this is amazing, especially the fact that you can hear the car this well is amazing. But why don't we hear the sound of the drone? This makes it perfect for an actual race, just sound of the car but not of the drone.
I suspect, but do not know for sure, but this presentation is probably is using a mic mounted on the car for most of what we are hearing during the lap with gear changes and engine sounds. It sounds like they also may have added some swoosh effects when the drone is passing objects at speed and maybe even some other subtle audio effects. Typically drones don't carry mics because the noise they generate drowns out anything else - and this drone sounded particularly wicked - so if this IS a drone mic, that would be game changing.

The lower quality footage with the telemetry is the real-time video seen by the pilot, can't really go for filming quality on the operation critical feed
I think the drone has two cameras, the poor quality one is a live feed to the pilot’s headset, and the other camera records in HD and is saved to storage.

@@michaelchapman707 The following is my deduction from the video. The drone has 1 camera. The footage is transmitted live in low quality to the pilot but recorded in the drone in high quality. This explains why the footage has to be viewed after the race: they have to download it.
this footage shows really how incredibly fast f1 drivers reflexes are and how well max understands the car already. The speed at which he not only notices the rear slips and breaks out, but also adjust accordingly is truly mind boggling. Also this view makes for great visualization for racing lines while still giving the perspective of speed so one can better understand how familiar drivers have to be with the circuit to keep so tight to their desired lines, adapt in time when trying an overtake maneuver and sliding right back after
Also, notice how tight he's staying to the slightly dryer line from a previous lap. Absolute masterclass, and you already know Max sees a hundred things he could have done different on that lap.

Relative to how extreme the speeds are, it's also quite safe if you crash. Imagine the old 50s style ones crashing at today's speeds.
Yeah, this was their filming day before preseason testing. They don't get much time on track, and it's the first shake-out for a new car. This might have been one of the very first laps Max had in this car, and it was raining. The car control to put that lap together is out of this world.
Max is arguably the best driver in the history in terms of catching oversteering, many of his teammates said his car is undrivable for them because how extreme Max setup his car
@@letsburn00 your comparison to 50s cars is completely irrelevant, what does that have to do with Max driving in the rain here? F1 is still extremely dangerous. Sure, crashing into a tire and foam barrier isn't as dangerous, but car collisions are easily deadly.
the final footage is mind blowing. i don think there has ever been footage from that angle of a f1 car doing hot laps and staying with the car the entire time.
