I'm sure this has been said a million times already, but you are doing yourself a GREAT disservice listening to individual songs on this album. You have to look at the ENTIRE ALBUM as one piece of music and listen to it from beginning to end. It has not just a theme but meaning. You will not regret it.

@@mariajobson739 I'm 66 and waking and baking to P.F. right now. Only difference from 1973 is that now it's legal. I won't say Dark Side Of The Moon is the best album ever because during times in my life it was Wish You Were Here or Animals. Pink Floyd is background music for life and it got me through many long out at sea periods in the Navy during the '70's and 80's.

@@davidgross990 Of course it's always a question of individual preference and one album can speak to you more than another. As an artistic endeavor DSOM is to me the pinnacle of rock, prog rock, and the fact that only MJ's Thriller has outsold it; the fact that it's STILL a top stellar 51 years later speaks volumes. Some people like The Wall better (and Comfortably Numb as performed in concert is possibly the very best single track in all of progdom). But for me DSOM has special memories and keeps amazing.

I'm so very happy that a reactor and not a viewer is actually pointing out the effect a song had when it was released - so many things have changed since the 60's, 70' and 80's that what was groundbreaking back then is seen as normal now.
The sound effects and lyrics were so new that records were bought, listened to, loaned to friends and worn out within a short space of time as we all tried to listen to and appreciate what Pink Floyd were telling us.

My dad took my brother and I to a local record store when we were kids, he said he wanted to introduce us to Pink Floyd. He purchased The Dark side of the moon cassette tape (we are in the early 90s at this time) popped it into the cassette player in the family Subaru and the money sound was followed by some ungodly high squealing. The tape was being eaten by the player and if you’re from this time you know what’s up. He was pissed and for the next ten minutes we watched our dad and the store owner have an argument over him getting a refund. My husband was in the military in his early twenties stationed in california. He went to Pink Floyd concerts often. Loved them. Still loves them, especially the instrumental sections. He said they would often just go off into instrumentals that just drew you into the music to set a mood. They set up stadium speakers all around the stadium, and different sections of sounds and music would travel around. I only knew them from the radio, and I liked several songs, but so much was missing. I was in college the 1st time I heard, 'The wall' album on a theater surround system, and the opening helicopter blew me. away. The songs proceed to tell the story of the guys life with each step adding another brick in the wall. So, I strongly agree that everyone should at least once listen to all Pink Floyd albums in order. Each is a performance from beginning to end.

The cash register & other sound effects were all recorded on tape, physically cut, and pasted in time onto a tape loop, long before sampling machines were invented. One of the first albums to have sound effects in the music was Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. The Beatles recorded various animals & arranged them as if they're chasing each other. There were probably others before that, but most people talk about Sgt Pepper as the groundbreaking album that paved the way for experimentation.

Don it’s interesting when you noted the cash register symbol, because Pink Floyd really was revolutionary with incorporating digital sounds on top of their instruments.
I used to read rock magazines and there were articles describing what their studio looked like during the recording process, and they said they would have so many wires and cables running everywhere to computers and mixing devices that there wasn’t even room to walk round. Pretty cool to think about!!

It is the original "Official Music Video."
I think you might have missed the message here, guys.
It was written by Roger Waters and released on their "Dark Side of the Moon "album. 0 Pink Floyd's song "Money" is a critique of capitalism and the power of money, and a commentary on the negative effects of the pursuit of money. The song's lyrics show how money can become addictive and the bad things it can bring, such as greed and consumerism. The first verse of the song includes the lyrics, "Get a good job with more pay and you're ok, money, it's a gas, grab that cash with both hands and make a stash, new car, caviar, four star daydream, think I'll buy me a football team". if you're making a lot of money you must give some to those in need

The album Dark Side of the Moon (1973) holds the record for number of weeks on Billboard 200.
You have to check out their original video for "Another Brick in the Wall", it's made from scenes in the movie "Pink Floyd - The Wall". There is a scene where the teacher is making fun of a young boy for writing "poems", and the teacher reads the lyrics to "Money". There is a story to each album, and each album is part of a bigger story.
P.S. I agree with the comments section, that you should try to listen to each album in its entirety, AND you have to watch the movie "Pink Floyd - The Wall"!

But that isn't the original video. The original featured animations from Gerald Scarfe including marching hammers, and it showed scenes of British school kids in the school playground. This was released with the original single in 1979.
The movie version, though also brilliant as is the movie, can be confusing for first time watchers/listeners/reactors because it is two songs, and has that spoken part when the teacher finds the boy's (Pink's) poems.

Floyd was one of the pioneers of using found sounds inside tracks. Three years before the release of Dark Side (and this track), Floyd released "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" on their Atom Heart Mother LP. The track starts with the sounds of someone making breakfast and word "Marmalade" being spoken and hard panned before a fairly baroque keyboard line breaks out. Then it is back to more sounds of breakfast being made, which introduces a guitar dominant melody line as breakfast noises continue in the background. Then more spoken word and breakfast sounds before a full band groove gently rolls us to the close with more found sound conversations layered in. Truly bizarre stuff.

    Welcome to the Rabbit Hole
A tip - the albums “The Dark Side Of The Moon” and “The Wall” are concept albums that are meant to be experienced as a whole.
And wow, you gotta check out the song “The Great Gig In The Sky”

As others have said, you need to listen to the album from start to finish. Find yourself somewhere you're comfortable and won't be interrupted, then let it flow. This applies to all Pink Floyd albums and you'll be surprised by the journey they will take you on.

Back in the 70's, someone figured out that if you watched "The Wizard of Oz" with the volume down and played "Dark Side of the Moon", they meshed up perfectly. Back then, we would start the VHS tape and when the MGM lion roared for the third time, you dropped the needle. Now it's a lot easier. It's here on YT in a video called "Dark Side of Oz".

You guys HAVE to listen to the entire "Dark Side of the Moon" album! The sound scape was so new and different in those days. Many young people now are blown away at the complexity of the music of Pink Floyd and some struggle for a label for their style. We always called it "acid rock" because it will take you on a grand trip for sure!

The sound montage at the beginning of the song was numerous pieces of tape spliced together then threaded onto the tape machine and around microphone stands setup around the studio so it created a big, analog looper.

Dark Side of the Moon is the greatest album by, in my opinion, the greatest band. My personal favourite off the album is Time. For a 40 something, Time will speak to you like no other song. I know there will be comments saying you should check out the Pulse concert or other concerts because they are great, which they are, but for audio quality and hearing Pink Floyd in their prime, there is no replacement for the original studio versions. The effects they weave into and between songs is almost unparalleled, they were and are the masters of it. I remember you were intrigued by comparisons of David Gilmore and Eddie Van Hellen as the greatest guitarist. EVH technical and speed are almost unmatched. You feel Gilmore’s guitar in your soul. EVH rush is one thing Gilmore and Pink Floyd will make you feel such a range and depths of emotions in their music that it will effect who you are as a person. For an example I again suggest Time. In the last 2 months PF has released a 50th anniversary version where they take the original studio version with modern animation. Definitely worth your time to listen and react to it!! Thanks for the smile today in reacting to The Pink Floyd BP!!!!

For other firsts: Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) were pioneers in expanding the limits of the synthesizer, and made the first electronic drum solo on Toccata on the album Brain Salad Surgery.

I like the song of theirs where they have a US operator called Mr Flloyd long distance collect and the other end keeps hanging up. You can hear in her voice she's genuinely perplexed saying ,after trying multiple times, they keep hanging up?!! This band could be quite cheeky with their ideas ,they were extremely creative. I was fortunate to see their "WALL" tour which I believe only played in 6 US cities....

The album, Dark Side of the Moon, was incredibly revolutionary. It was the most complex album ever produced to that time, and took 6 months to record. The cash registers were revolutionary. I was in High School when the album came out and everyone was playing it everywhere all the time. And you really need to hear it entire - every song morphs into the next one, without breaks. Digital systems cut it into individual songs which it was never intended to be heard as. Here the next song is about wasting your life chasing money and going through the process of sad, regretful old age then dying.

This album came out in 73, don't know that this video is from then or made later like the video for Black Sabbath's "WAR PIGS" TLthat you see everywhere nowadays was definately not out when that song came out way back when. Dark Side Of The Moon ,this album at the time was holding the longest number of weeks on the Billboard Top LP charts 990 weeks. And it went 14 times platinum in Britain!
