  • Disney's Post-Renaissance Era Films - RANKED
Hello and welcome to The Trove!
This video is the sixth installment of a special mini-series I'm doing on RANKED. The movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios have unofficially been divided into eras, or ages, so I decided to share my personal rankings for each one.
This episode covers the Post-Renaissance Era, which includes films 38-48 from the canon, spanning from 1999-2008. In this ranking, I order Fantasia 2000, Dinosaur, The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Home on the Range, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt from my least to most favorite. Remember - this isn't a worst to best list - it's just based on my personal enjoyment of each film.
This was an interesting video to make just based on how experimental and varied the Post-Renaissance can get. There are so many different ideas and mediums at play here as Walt Disney Animation Studios attempted to navigate the rapidly changing landscape of animated movies. Disney finally got some true competition! It's a bumpy ride, but it's not without it's merits.
Make sure to let me know your Post-Renaissance Era ranking or even just your favorite movie from this era in the comments down below!
Thanks for stopping by! If you love Disney animation, rankings, video essays, or trivia, expect more content like this coming soon! And consider liking and subscribing if you enjoyed this video!
If you want to skip around the ranking, I've broken the video down into sections here:

I'm an early '90 kid who grew up looking up at Mulan,Belle& Pocahontas, crying for Mufasa, fearing Jafar, but I can't help feeling that the bronze era,the post renaissance and,to an extent, the silver age films somehow seem more sincere than most other disney movies. They don't follow usual formulas&rules in order to please&make money. Although they're not all great & don't always look perfect, each of these movies is unique & doesn't shy away from trying out risky things, with animation as well as with the story. These films have a heart. It's a pity they're forgotten. I plan to rewatch all of them. ♥️

It makes me happy that the kids who grew up about a decade after me have an affection for movies like Treasure Planet and Atlantis. I don't remember them getting much positive attention when they first came out, but there was definitely something about each of them that really grabbed me. I found them touching and loveable and full of imagination. The only thing that absolutely drives me nuts about Atlantis - absolutely drives me nuts! - is that Kida needs Milo to read the language of her people from the height of their civilization, and she's not a distant descendant of that civilization, she was literally there. I wonder how many hundreds or thousands of years it would take me to forget how to read?

Lilo was the clear example of what being neurodivergent meant for many kids, I myself related to her "odd" behavior and tendency to hyperfixations, even more so because she was a girl and we don't get to see much representation, also my mom was quite young and trying to raise me and my siblings alone so I kinda saw her in Nani more often than not

To be honest, my favorite post renaissance era of Walt Disney Animation Studios is Dinosaur (2000).
I couldn't help it. It's just that it's my favorite childhood animated movie back in childhood.
And the reason why I love Disney's Dinosaur (2000) so much is because it looks similar to Universal's The Land Before Time franchise.
And I really love this movie so much.
And I was a huge fan of Dinosaurs when I was a little kid.

My top favourite Disney animated films were always Dinosaur, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet.
Part of the reason is that they're not musicals. They're more straightforward adventure films and each tackle something I love. Plus they have 3 of my all time favourite scores, all 3 having been done by James Newton Howard.

The reason why they rereleased the Mickey short was because the Fantasia concept was originally an ever changing event with some recognizable and new content, and still kept the legacy alive, and in other words, at the very least, regarding chicken little, Buck Cluck is still a better father with understandable embarrassed personality that is better than for example SIDS family

Lilo and Stitch is always #1 for me

  • @serenepastel
    @serenepastel Рік тому +17

I’ve always called this period the experimental period. Disney did some really unique things during this period. Did all of them work? No. Are there problems with the movies? I’d say no more than any other movie in their line up. Are there some things that we should take away as positives from this era? Heck yeah!
    1) I love how diverse these movies are and how the characters identities influenced them without pure tokenism. From the modern Hawaiian society, to a Native Alaskan or Canadian tribe, to the multinational adventuring team, to the stylized South Americans, these movies gave a lot of groups representation in the media. Heck, even Fantasia 2000 has a character with a disability that is seen as a noble protagonist and the preferred side of a love triangle (Steadfast Tin Soldier)
    2) They showed a lot of styles of family dynamics. Lilo and Stich has the most obvious example, with Nani as Lilo’s guardian and eventually growing to include David, the three aliens, and kinda sorta Bubbles. It’s a found family that doesn’t just fall into the nuclear framework at the end. There are also several adoption stories in this era, most clearly being Meet the Robinsons. The family isn’t less real because they aren’t biological, but it’s nice to see Lewis come to that conclusion himself. Jim’s absent father is a major part of his character, but he never once detracts from what his single mother did to support him growing up. Even Chicken Little has an example of living in an emotionally abusive household. Not one that he escapes, I don’t trust Buck for a second with his son. Regardless, this was a really good time to see families that weren’t just nuclear or dead parents.
    3) The settings were so different from what we expected from Disney. I love the fairy tale settings as much as the next person, but I also love seeing them branch out into something completely different. Seeing the American southwest, space, and Atlantis depicted so lovingly is amazing.
    4) Not every protagonist had a love interest. I’m a basic Ace. I love the romances in stories, but sometimes I just need an adventure story with different types of love shown.
    5) This is its own category. I will go for bat for Rhapsody in Blue forever. I love how stylized everything is.
    6) Last but not least, I love the artistry of the 2D animation of this era. I will never stop being salty about the transition to 3D animation. (I know it’s a business move, but it just doesn’t work for me. At least, not in this style of CGI. It feels too plastic). These artists really showed off what they can do during their last hurrah with 2D animation. I can hope it will return one day, but for now, I have to be content with what this era gave us visually.

Well if course if we take the godawful Lion King remake as an example, it's gonna be bad. But CGI animals can be really expressive if it's done right (Aslan from Narnia or Netflix Jungle Book). In addition, the OG Brother Bear has a thing where they start as making bears inexpressive when he's human, but more cartoony when he is a bear. Using this effect again would be interesting.
But anyway, they probably won't do it at the end of the day. And if they tackle the 2000s I would prefer Atlantis anyway

I probably owned these movies as well at home but i think like most late 90s kids we were still inclined to rewatch Toy Story and Hercules over these. I was never really interested in Meet The Robinsons or Chicken Little even if I watched them also Atlantis and Treasure Island I always would confuse and think they are Dreamworks or whatever studio made El Dorado (I think they might look similar in animation that’s why?)
While I never watch any of these now (I don’t even know if most of them are on Disney +) it’s interesting to look back and see what was happening at Walt Disney studios and why those movies were kind of different? Lol
Lilo and Stitch had the biggest impact on me and is still probably one of my favorite Disney movies til this day and I also loved Emperors New Groove when it came out (finally a latin movie). But lilo and stitch I remember the commercials and promo and it just seemed like it was going to be the most interesting movie 🥹
lastly BOLT??? I didn’t think that was even in this era! Or maybe I thought it was pixar

To be fair, I don't really love any of these movies. I think they are all forgetable and none of them really have the Disney feel. I'm 100% grateful that this era is over and I hope we never get another period this awkward and boring. The CG ones are my least favorite, not just because of the animation, but because the stories are not great. Including Bolt, in my opinion. Bolt is basically that one episode of Rescue Rangers and Patch's London Adventure, just done well. It is the best of the CG films in this era, but I'm still have no desire to rewatch outside of a full canon rewatch.
Stitch and Kuzko are iconic and I do enjoy those movies the most.

I can really agree. Chicken Little and Meet The Robinsons are personally the worst Disney "Classics" ever made. Meet The Robinsons is a boring complicated mess I really hate. Chicken Little is arguably worse... But like you say, at least it is not BORING. Home On The Range I do think is a good enough movie, like you said it doesn't deserve ALL the hate... But I would not call it great. Brother Bear... I'm sorry but that's the best Post-Renaissance movie by a landslide. Only Bolt and Lilo & Stitch are close to it ;)

My order is Dinosaur, chicken little, fantasia 2000, home on the range, bolt, meet the Robinson’s, (these next 4 are hard for me because I love them all so much) treasure planet, emperors new grove, Atlantis, brother bear, and one of my absolute favorite movies of all time is Lilo and Stitch! As someone who grew up in a non-traditional family environment I was very familiar with the ideas of non biological, adopted, foster, and chosen family. These are shown in brother bear, but also very prevalent in Lilo and Stitch. I have one biological sister, one legally adopted sister, one sister who was my cousin but my parents got custody of, and 17 foster sisters. Also my favorite auntie (not biological) is from Hawaii and I grew up dancing at a local hālau and surrounded by my Hawaiian family, language, and culture. I love the soft visuals and music, it’s very comforting. I also like how we see stitch and Lilo act out, because challenging behaviors are something a lot of my sister had to overcome. Both Brother Bear and Lilo and stitch are so beautiful and make me cry, but no animated movie is more comforting and special to me than Lilo and Stitch. Also I just found your channel and have been binging this series, I really like it :)

I'm so glad that Atlantis made a top spot on this list. I love that movie and feel it doesn't always get the credit it deserves. The Mike Mignola style is a different choice which makes it strickling different and gives this movie and identity of its own, without having to look like the pervious movie of the Renaissance Era.
But I can't believe that Fantasia 2000 was so far down on the list. I absolutely love this movie. I think it is actually better than the first one. IMO it's more entertaining, and the shorter run time makes it feel like less of an undertaking to pop in for movie night. Plus the song choices are more fun IMO.

The bottom two are interchangeable for me. I wasn’t invested in either plots of Dinosaur or Home on the Range and the visuals don’t draw me in that much. Home on the Range May have better scenery but I still think it’s kind of dull because all of it (except for Pearl’s farm) is just a big red desert. The only reason I put Dinosaur above it is because I think it actually taught a good lesson about leadership through the contrast of Aladar and Kron. It might just be me, but I saw no lesson in Home on the Range, but feel free to let me know what it is.

Thanks for sharing your ranking. The Wild is sometimes included in the canon in Europe I think, but it wasn't made by Walt Disney Animation Studios, so I don't consider it to be part of this group. Sometimes they exclude Dinosaur as well, I'm not sure why.

Since the eras aren't officially recognized by Disney, there are some disputes about where certain eras begin and end. Most lists I saw had Bolt in the Post-Renaissance, but it could also be shifted forward into the Revival if you prefer.

This is honestly my least favorite era. There’s only one or two movies I actually love. It feels like with some of the movies they were trying to play catch-up with Pixar and Dreamworks. Here’s my personal ranking:
    11) Chicken Little
    10) Home on the Range
    9) Dinosaur
    8) Brother Bear
    7) Fantasia 2000
    6) Meet the Robinsons
    5) Treasure Island
    4) Bolt
    3) Atlantis: Lost Empire
    2) The Emperor’s New Groove
    1) Lilo & Stitch
Some people count Princess & the Frog as a part of this era, if ya do, that would be my #1 :)

Great ranking, thank you for sharing it! I have to agree, it's one of my least favorite eras in Disney animation. You were spot on that it felt like they were playing catch up. I don't think they would've made a movie like Chicken Little without that pressure.

To be honest, I've always felt like Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 shouldn't be included in movie lists/movie rankings. Because they AREN'T movies. They're compilations. They aren't stories in and of themselves, rather they're a collection of a bunch of short stories.

Dinosaur: Hmmm....I see your points, but watch a few Bob Ross episodes and try looking at it another way. I think the point of this movie is actually very philosophical. Even the boring brown background serves a purpose in the overall philosophical plot and that philosophical plot is Tyrannical Leadership vs Cooperative Leadership. Under Kron's, who's just as brown as the scenery, tyrannical leadership, nothing changes. The world is all the same color, the journey is bleak, everyone's just following and obeying and nothing's changing.
Then comes in a literally and figuratively more colorful potential leader that thinks while there should be a leader, he should work WITH this herd instead of rule over it. That's when the scenery does indeed start to get dark at first because this is a new step, and it's best to take care of the darker and harder times before the light, fun, and more colorful moments happen. Indeed, the color of the scenery even gets brighter and more colorful once the herd follows Aladar's leadership over Kron's.
That's why the majority of the scenery is so brown and depressing because they're following a depressing leader for the majority of the film. The scenery only changes and gets better when the herd decides to change for the better.
Fantasia 2000: Never saw this. Never want to. Never will. Next.
Chicken Little: Never saw this movie either. I just wanna know...."Why? Why would a simple story about a gullible chick that has an acorn fall on HER head and convinces other birds that the sky is falling need to be turned into a full-length B-grade sci-fi movie?"
Meet the Robinsons: Read the book. Never saw the movie. Want to though.
Brother Bear: Never saw it all the way through. I didn't like the ruthless hunting and killing of the bear at the beginning.
Honestly, when it comes to animals dealing with the rising threat of human technology in addition to their own problems, I'd much rather watch "Ice Age." The original, not all the crappy sequels. It's funnier but also more serious. The characters are a team of misfits, yet they are much more believable. And you feel more for the plight of Diego. He knows his mission, but he's torn between loyalty to his pack and loyalty to his budding friendship with those he truly seems to love.
Home on the Range: Never saw it. Never will. As you can probably tell, I'm not a Post-Renaissance fan. In fact, I pretty much quit watching animated movies in the year 2000 except for Pixar movies and "The Beatles Yellow Submarine."
Lilo and Stitch: I saw this movie in the men's locker room during an all-night party at my junior high school. I liked it a lot, but quickly forgot about it. One of the only times the girls were allowed in the men's locker room, heh, heh, heh.... Not to mention Nani being voiced by one of the sexiest women in the world, Tia Carriere, was pretty cool.
    Treasure Planet: Never saw it.
The Emperor's New Groove: I like this movie. David Spade was born to be a talking llama. I liked the Playstation game a lot better though. Movies are on the decline in popularity, I think. More and more people are like, "Why just watch a movie or series when I can be part of one?" and that's what gaming gives people today.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire: I never saw this movie either. I wanted to back then, but I was a teen and childhood was dying for me.
Bolt: I actually do wanna see this movie someday.

That's a really interesting take on Dinosaur, it makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately nothing can change the fact that it's a miserable experience for me watching the movie. From what you said, I understand the reason for all the brown and bleak backgrounds, but it's not enjoyable to watch which is ultimately why it's my least favorite.

    My Ranking:
Warning: I'm going to be very harsh for the first half as this era includes the only movies I actually dislike. It also includes some of my favorite movies of all time!
    11. Dinosaur - This movie doesn't belong! Its as much an animated movie as the "live action" Lion King. I would love for someone to explain why this is included in the cannon when The Wild isn't?!?
    10. Chicken Little - This movie is actually animated, but is also unwatchable bad!
    9. Meet the Robinson - I find the plot of this movie equal parts hard to follow and boring. The villain makes me cringe, and I find it ascetically unpleasant to watch.
    8. Home on the Range - Congratulations! You convinced me to bump this up above one spot. Your right the background and score are incredible. You may even have convinced me to watch in again and give the characters and plot a second chance. I do remember it being so painful to watch that I didn't watch another Disney animated movie until Tangled.
    7. Fantasia 2000 - The only reason this is here is for the Firebird suite which I absolutely love! I couldn't have named a single other segment before you went over them honestly.
    6. Treasure Planet - Now the movies I actually like! I don't think this movie is underrated. I think it is accurately rated. I also know a lot of people who love it. I really enjoy it as well but it's not one of my favorites.
    5. Bolt - Now this is underrated! In my case I can blame Home on the Range, as this movie came out after I'd given up on Disney Animation. I did watch it later and it is so delightful! It actually feels more like a Pixar movie because of its enormous heart and its animation quality.
    4. The Emperor’s New Groove - I always forget how funny this movie is! It really has to be the funniest of all Disney animated films.
    3. Brother Bear - It always hurts me to see this put so low on every ranking I've every seen. This is my comfort movie. I never get tired of watching it. I grew up in Alaska though so this kinda feels like MY movie. Also the music and animation is incredible!
    2. Atlantis: The Lost Empire - I've been a scifi nerd all my life and my favorite flavor of scifi has always been classic pulp adventure stories. This movie feels like a mix of those stories, Jules Verne, and Stargate, which is why it automatically gets a place at the top of any ranking list its on.
    1. Lilo & Stitch - This is my favorite Disney animated movie! It feels like it was made specifically for the weird kids of the world! I was that weird kid with no friends, who had trouble controlling her emotions, and seemed to have a knack for ruining things without meaning to... this movie was a loadstone that reminded me that no matter what I would never be left behind.

I wanted to love Atlantis so much. It has so much that I like, but it often feels like the story is being made up on the spot. The voice actors are great, but the character designs feel like they come from different movies. Its really an action movie, which I find rather boring. But I get why people like it
