Hello and welcome to The Trove!
This video is the fifth installment of a special mini-series I'm doing on RANKED. The movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios have unofficially been divided into eras, or ages, so I decided to share my personal rankings for each one.
This episode covers the Renaissance Era, which includes films 28-37 from the canon, spanning from 1989-1999. In this ranking, I order The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, and Tarzan from my least to most favorite. Remember - this isn't a worst to best list - it's just based on my personal enjoyment of each film.
I apologize for how ridiculously long this video got, but it is the Renaissance, after all. I couldn't bring myself to cut any corners when it came to this era. These are some of my absolute favorite Disney movies ever and so I hope I did them justice. What a glorious time this was for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

I think gypsy being a slur isn’t widely accepted, it all depends on context. There are gypsies who aren’t Romani and excluding them in certain conversations isn’t right. Likewise, not all Romani are/were gypsies, so referring to gypsies as Romani is likewise very rude and inaccurate. This is how it was explained to me by someone of Romani descent, anyway, he deeply disliked ‘gypsies’ being found-replaced with Romani since Romani and gypsy culture and identity are not interchangeable. However, in the context of this film, I think it’s okay to refer to the gypsies as Romani because I believe that was the intention of the filmmakers, as they actually changed the text to make Esmeralda a gypsy by birth and gave her Romani features. A change I really like and hope sticks for other itèrerions, since e original novel was kinda racist with having her be a stolen white baby.
Thank you for this comment. I tried to be sensitive with my language based on my limited knowledge, but I don't personally know anyone of Romani descent to ask, so thanks for making it more clear.
I think the only slur I've heard for them is pikey; though that term is mostly used in England.
@@thetroveyoutube I don’t think you did anything wrong! And I have to admit my conversation was with one Romani person a number of years ago, I certainly am not an expert. However in my limited understanding, I think he made a good point about Romani and Gypsies not being necessarily the exact same thing, and the existence of various non-Romani Gypsies.
There’s still a lot of controversy about the word, so you’re not wrong to be cautious. Some want to reclaim the word and dislike those who treat it as the new n-word. There are those who think only Romani should use it, while those who identify as gypsies but not Romani feel like this is invalidating them. Others want to embrace it as it has more recognition and includes different kinds of people. There’s also a lot of aid organizations that use the name as a way to communicate they help all in the traveller community, while other aid organizations will specify they focus primarily on the Roma community, so there’s again that line where Roma doesn’t equal gypsy and gypsy doesn’t equal Roma, but there are Roma who think that non-Roma gypsies aren’t gypsies and…yes. Big mess.
So for my understanding, context is still the most important thing. Gypsy can and has been used as a slur, and in those cases it is certainly offensive. Other people embrace the name and it is celebrated. Others have only bad experiences. I suppose it’s like the word Queer - it can be positive, negative, or neutral, depending on the context. If it’s shouted at you cruelly, it’s offensive. If it’s being used by your community to uplift those of similar experiences, it’s positive. If it’s being used in a general historic paper, it’s neutral.
I don’t think the use of the word in this particular film falls into offensive myself, as it was the term used in the time period and it’s clear when some characters are using it offensively and when others are embracing it. However, in the inevitable remake, I’d love to see more depth given to the culture and an exploration of specific Romani culture and language. I think there was some effort to go beyond Hugo’s text in that area in this animated film, but there’s much further they can and should go in another take.
I suppose I get frustrated when people just automatically treat the term as the n-word, without understanding how much more complex it is, and end up picking a side in the argument without hearing out everyone else in the conversation who don’t want to see the word erased completely. But it is good that people are reconsidering it and looking into Romani culture more, that’s a very good thing.

The hunchback I hated as a kid, all grown up it is hands down the BEST Disney movie. Rewatch in your 30s the tones that went over your head as a kid will be extremely relatable
Yes. Extraordinary film with so many scenes that hit really hard.

the little mermaid was THE disney movie for me growing up and it hits me with nostalgia like crazy. im so glad you recognize just what a wonderful movie it is
I was 5 when this movie came out and it changed my world!! Still my favorite movie.
I think the fact that I was watching this series when I found out I had cancer, and I’m still able to call this one of my favorite UA-cam series, says a lot about how good these videos are

Also literally the remakes were part of saving Disney again ;P They are a big part of the successes of Disney lately. I know some people don’t like them, but they are highly successful (and I personally love most of them)

@@warizoh I'm glad you love them but I prefer watching something new instead of rewatching the same old story in a live action retelling. So I think Disney remakes are unecessary because we already had Disney feature animated movies saving the company

It's crazy how everything you said about the little mermaid is exactly how I feel and it means alot that it's also your number one Disney movie as it is mine too.

Some "unusual" things I love about "The little mermaid":
1) I don't see this detail addressed anywhere, but the sound effects for the underwater sequences are great. If you listen closely, every time a character moves or swims, there's the sound of moving water. This is the type of special effects that you're not supposed to pay direct attention to them, but are still necessary to immerse you in the story. And the type that when they're bad or absent, it's painfully obvious.
2) Ariel gets a bad rap for "giving away her voice for a man", but I actually find it refreshing that for once it's the princess who actively pursues her romantic interest. The "active" role is usually reserved for male characters, because our society tends to expect men to be the hunters, and women the sort of trophies, judges or muses that motivate him to change and grow. Prior to prince Eric, all the thre princes of the three Disney princess' movies were the ones who went on quests to find them or rescue them. Sure, Eric does rescue Ariel at the end, and Ariel still needs him to kiss HER. But she rescued him first, and she took the big risk of getting out there and make sacrifices to give the relationship a try.
3) Flounder. He's adorable.
4) The shark. I still watch that scene over and over again, I just find it very exciting and funny at the same time.
5) There seems to be a parallelism between King Triton and Ursula, and god and the devil. Just like the devil, Ursula rebelled against Triton, and both were cast literally to the bottom of their worlds, where they keep plotting against the ruler by manipulating the ruler's good subjects.
6) The score in the scene where Eric tours Ariel around the kingdom. The orchestra is just so beautiful!

@@thetroveyoutube The reason Disney made Hunch Back is because Jeffery Katzenberg wanted to win some awards. With Beauty and the Beast being a hit, Disney was willing to takes some risks.

@@AnnRita45 There were talks from Disney about removing hellfire from the film because it was so dark. The solution, make flaming Esmeralda less naked in the song. That is What ultimately saved hellfire.
The hunchback of Notre Dame is not just one of my favorite Disney films, but one of my all-time favorite films. Out There, Heavens Light/Hellfire and God Help The Outcasts are among the best Disney songs EVER.

One of my all-time favorite movies too. The animation, music, and storytelling (most importantly) are absolutely magnificent.
Frollo is a horrible evil villain because he represents a realistic villain that exists in real life, with realistic motives

I also love how he mentions that Frollo basically uses religious beliefs to judge others because he strongly believes that he is righteous because of his faith, but he uses his own way of showing his truest and darkest self! And yes, the hypocrisy of many Christian people is so perfectly displayed by Frollo

This is without a doubt the golden age of Disney movies, and animation in general as far as I'm concerned. These movies are just so amazing, and I never grow tired of watching them.
Yes the hunchback of Notre Dame is a masterpiece besides a few things

Little Mermaid is my number two. Lion King is my favorite! It was the first movie that I saw in theaters.

@@thetroveyoutube As someone who is happy that even at the bottom of the list, you could still like The Rescuers Down Under, I’d most certainly take this, Tarzan and The Hunchback of Notre Dame over Pocahontas (the only Disney Renaissance film that I don’t love because of its harmful message that it’s okay for a race to call a different race “savages” which doesn’t apply to anyone. Not people from the United Kingdom, not indigenous people, not every other people of a background. I respect that you really like this film, but still.) any day.
Of course, there IS another potential reason for King Triton's forbidding human contact other than his fear of them. Watch when Ursula mixes that potion in "Poor Unfortunate Souls." Notince all the glass bottles and clay pots she uses? Where did she get those? She couldn't have made them, you can bake clay or blow glass underwater. She probably got them from human shipwrecks, and Triton may've known that. He forbade human contact to lower the risk of his people accidentally encountering Ursula looking for jars and pots on human shipwrecks.
I've never heard this theory, that's so interesting!
I love how much detail that you give for your listings. It gives so much context and allows each video of the series to build off of each other. Thank you for mentioning the instrumental pieces as well. Each one that you mention here makes the scene a billion times more emotional than it would be without the score. People sleep on the instrumental pieces too much and that’s a shame.

I truly believe that ALL of Disney's music should be admired! Be it with words or just instrumental, Disney just KNOWS how to put music to their movies!!!!!
I’m very happy to see someone gush over little Mermaid! It is by far my favorite movie ever but I hear so many people who just don’t like it. I don’t see many people talk about it in a nice light because I just hear them say that she was a winey 16 year old child who fell in love with a human and changed her whole life to fit Eric’s. I love the story and there is so much more to her and to hear someone else love this movie just as much as me makes my heart happy
There are a lot of UA-camrs out there who talk about Disney. But your content is different. Your Videos are so full of passion, heart, Soul and knowledge and Last but Not least the way you talk is smart - keep on doing this great Work!

Here's me who legit watches The Hunchback of Notre Dame every six months
My personal understanding of why Disney produced “Hunchback” is that they made it in Walt Disney’s ethos of telling classic stories that are for ALL people, not just for children.
The main moral is very similar to “Beauty and the Beast” and they made it I believe as a more mature sibling of that film which was so loved. Yes, it’s darker but the core of the story is the same core moral as Beauty and the Beast. To me, it totally works as it continues the main theme in that classic fairytale but just shows how that message applies to the more complicated real world we live in.
It’s a social commentary plot but at its core it’s a fable about human goodness vs evil, superficiality and corruption.
I think that had it come out straight after Beauty and the Beast then the general public may not have felt the way they did, I think it simply was not helped by being released after Aladdin and Lion King, both of which, despite having serious story themes at their core, did have A LOT of classic cartoony fun elements primarily catered to children.
Yes, Beauty and the Beast is a balance of a fairytale with a meaningful moral and entertainment, spectacle and fun but it never I think went as far as Lion King did in terms of adding in more comedic, fun elements to make it lighter.
The balance that BATB struck was simply perfect of intense, scary moments and mature themes contrasted by broadway fun show tunes and some
light and theatrical side characters.
That is the foundation they wanted to build off for Hunchback.

I love and appreciate how you know and speak on the difference between objective criticism and personal opinion. It shows an incredible amount of film knowledge and class. I remember watching your Bronze Age ranking video first and being so happy you acknowledged the phenomenal quality of Fox and the Hound depsite your personal opinion of it. It’s especially refreshing here where most UA-camrs would rank something low on opinion and try to tear down the film to back that opinion rather than owning it. I was genuinely invested in hearing your thoughts on Tarzan and Beauty and the Beast, my personal top 2 Disney films ever, because while ranked low they were shown genuine respect and objective criticism was counted separately from personal enjoyment. It was a levelheadedness that earns you a lot of respect and praise!

Regarding the song Hellfire in Hunchback of Notre Dame, I actually think the lyrics and darker tone brilliantly juxtaposes Heaven's Light that is sung just before it, which shows Quasimodo's more pure and innocent feelings towards Esmeralda compared to Frollo's more base desires. I think this helps illustrate the message of the film about what makes a monster and what makes a man really well.
Yet the fact Esmerelda chooses Phoebus is also a good move - he turns out to be a good man that commits his principles to action when he goes against Frollo and stands up for the gypsies. Furthermore, it always felt like Esmerelda chose him of her free will, as they're both people who cannot abide injustice and gel so well together.
On another note, Esmerelda was my favourite Disney heroine growing up. That she was so confident and genuinely charming yet also stands up for what is right, even if she stands alone against many (eg when she cuts Quasimodo free during the Festival of Fools) was so inspiring. She also didn't judge others before getting to know them on top of her insurmountable courage and had her own mind that couldn't be swayed the the judgements and opinions of others. I honestly still think she's the strongest woman in all of Disney because of who she innately is. These new 'strong female characters' can't even step to her.
Esmeralda also pretty much owns the “justice fist”. Love love love The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Has been my one of my favorites since I watched it in theaters back in 1996. I was 8 at the time.

The little mermaid is my favorite Disney movie as well so i'm very happy is Number 1 here! While i do agree Ariel is in a way the "pawn" in Triton and Ursula's war (still love her though), she still deserves a lot of credit, since she and Eric were the ones that elimimanted Ursula, not Triton (in a way, she stoped being a pawn and became a "player" in my opinion the second she killed Ursula's sidekicks, so much that Ursula directs all her rage to Ariel and completly forgets about Triton after becoming Queen) in the end, and like you said it's Ariel wishes and desiries that push the story. Anyway, very exited for more disney stuff on your channel.

Nostalgia gets to me with this era, too. It's really just such a strong time in Disney animation though. Great list!

And besides, I probably think that The Rescuers Down Under is criminally underrated.
You're number 1 is my number 1 too! I can tell you love these movies, and it's refreshing to see a critic who sways more towards the optimistic side while still being objective.
My ranking and thoughts:
1) The little mermaid: This movie is my fav. Disney movie along with Pinocchio. I love everything about it: the animation, the characters, the score and songs, and more. Along with Pinocchio, this movie introduced me to my love for the ocean, and even know I keep watching several scenes on repeat and still excite me (especially the shark chase). Ariel is also a great protagonist, and I'm glad the negative viewing she's garnered over the years is starting to change.
2) The lion king: amazing movie, fun, deeply moving and grand. Controversial opinion though: I don't love "Be prepared" :O
3) The hunchback of Notre Dame: It's a flawed movie, and from an objective point of view, I'd place it somewhere in the middle. But every time I watch I am left astounded and moved. A movie doesn't need to be perfect to be amazing.
4) Beauty and the beast: This one has grown on me. I've always liked it, but I'm more aware of its elegance and grace now that I'm older.
5) Tarzan: Although this one used to be among my top 3, this movie is so much fun and I connect with its message and themes so much that it still holds up for me. Plus, I think the Phil Collins' songs fit the movie well.
6) Aladdin: Awesome and fun.
7) Mulan: Same as Aladdin, and Jerry Goldsmith's score is among my favourites.
8) Hercules: I don't think it's quite as good as the others, but it's still a lot of fun.
9) Pocahontas: I actually do like the movie despite being so low on my list, mostly because of the art and the music, and some powerful scenes. But I think it's also a little too serious for kids, and a little too watered down for adults. It's one of those movies that it's more interesting to analyse it than watching it.
10) Rescuers Down Under: I only watched this a few months ago, and it actually disappointed me. It's cute, but there's so much filler, some characters annoy me, and the fact that we never see if the rest of the captured animals at McLeach's lair are freed disturbs me, especially considering this film has an environmental movie.

I agree on The Little Mermaid, although for me, Pocahontas is the second best in Disney's renaissance, to me that movie was flawless, we don't need to address reality or racial issues, it's just a movie, it's entertainment of the greater quality, the messages the movie purposely delivers are all positive, the messages some people got because of the song "Savages" or John Smith romance are just subjective and I am not agreeing with them.

The Lion King is amazing but it does get old seeing it top almost every list. It's either that or Beauty and the Beast lol

BTW legit feel the same about every single thing you mentioned on TLM I've been saying that it's their second Snow white for years. To this day, even in Encanto you see the influence of that film, it really changed the whole game.

My Ranking
10. The Rescuers Down Under: Honestly after watching it, I immediately forget what happened in the movie.
9. Pocahontas: I am not a big fan of the story or Pocahontas and John Smith's relationship, but the animation is pretty and the songs are good
8. Tarzan: I like the fast pace of seeing Tarzan swinging through the Jungle but I would say it's an ok movie with a good soundtrack
7. The Little Mermaid: I love the Return to paint and ink animation it went back to, an enjoyable movie from start to finish with great characters and awesome music
6. The Hunchback of Notre Dame: I love the story, the epic scale of the animation and soundtrack and some very interesting characters
5. Hercules: It's just so much Fun watching this movie. I love Greek Mythology and this is still a great movie. Meg was my first crush.
4. Beauty and the Beast: Truly a beautiful movie. I love the soundtrack and the overall design that has a sense of mystical and mysterious. The music is some of my favorite from Disney and overall something incredible
3. Mulan: This is in my Top 5 Disney movies. I love how unique the animation feels, Great cast and Characters, and I'll Make a Man Out of You is my go to Karaoke song
2. Aladdin: It is a stunning and amazing movie with some of the best Character animation. Robin Williams is always a win and Jafar is a great Villain. The music is truly memorable and catchy too
1. The Lion King: The pinnacle of Disney Animation. I absolutely loved it from Day 1

Art like anything else is subjective, I guess. To me, BatB is absolute perfection. Whereas I've never quite understood why Hercules has the following it does, not unlike Frozen. And its not like there was one simple quick fix that could have solved it like in Hunchback (where the answer was simple: delete the Gargoyles and you have a good film). Its story is all over the place, the dialogue can be cringy (Meg and Hades' dialogue pops like bubbles in a champagne glass but then you have lines like "he's too dangerous to be around NORMAL people!"), the animation is inconsistent, the choices for some of the character designs come off as downright weird at times (in both cases seems like they were trying to emulate the designs of Ancient Greek pottery but it comes off as angular and ugly at times - Hades' design itself looks like a weird amalgam of the Heat & Snow Misers from Rankin-Bass), and while the score is pretty solid, the songs even are a hit-and-miss most of the time (don't get me wrong, the Muses' vocals are amazing, but even great vocals can only do so much for some of the shoddy lyrics - and I Won't Say I'm in Love has this random throwback to Kiss the Girl like its trying to duplicate the feel but fails to). It's also chock full of dated Nineties references that haven't aged well (which Aladdin also had, but the plot didn't depend on them in the same way). Seems like it was trying to do what Emperor's New Groove later did more successfully because it went "all in" on the satire element without trying to still replicate the Renaissance formula at the same time. I have similar issues with Pocahontas and Mulan, but this has been long enough already. Again, though, art is subjective - viva la difference!

I don't entirely agree. Just get rid of two of the gargoyles and leave the one played by Jason Alexander. Then change him up a bit by making him an imaginary friend that Quasimodo's loneliness conjures up to keep him company.
Actually Hercules is my 3rd favorite Disney film because of how it has this grand epic and heroic scale but also balances it out with a sense of fun.
I really think Disney should have adapted Wild/Six Swans instead of Rescuers 2...
Wild Swans fits soooo much with 90s darker tone of Disney & it would make 10 film collection complete

Thank u for not hating Pocahontas. Why does everyone harp on the historical inaccuracy? Fox's "ANASTASIA" animated movie (which came out only 2 years afterwards) is also riddled with historical inaccuracy - but no one cared, since it was well-made. Incidentally, in 2005, Terrence Malick did his take of the Pocahontas' story, called "The New World". Guess what? It was ALSO a romantic take on the story, which as you alluded to - is entirely false! But no one cared about its historical inaccuracy because, you guessed it: they liked the story in the movie and how it was made. That said, the real weak point of Disney's version is, yes, the story. You called it, well done. The story is just sort of weak. But as you also nailed it: the film is also... quite spectacular, technically and artistically.
To sum it up: I actually admire Disney for attempting something different w/ "Pocahontas" - thematically (their first historical figure, mature themes) and artistically (ahem, the stunningly unique visual style!). I don't care what the haters say, it's... a fascinating movie for all of the above reasons. We're talking about subjective taste here, not objective quality!
Exactly, I certainly believe that Pocahontas still has several amazing qualities despite its issues. The historical inaccuracies may not be great, but they don't automatically make the movie worthless. I'm happy you also appreciate the stunning visuals and artistic aspects of the movie! @@thetroveyoutube I can't resist plugging this quote: Rolling Stone gave this astute review of Pocahontas, after also pointing out its flaws (not as fun as the other Disney films): "Disney deserves praise for trying to raise the ante of their animated movies" (w/ Pocahontas.) Exactly. Disney could've played it safe and chose something more kid-friendly and appealing; they tried something new w/ Pocahontas - and like all art, it doesn't always succeed perfectly. But that doesn't mean there's no merit to the effort ;)

I think the real problem people have with its inaccuracy, is that the descendants of her people are still living. The inaccuracy of the movie glosses over the seriousness of what happened to her. She’s actually considered one of the first ‘vanished people’. I think peoples’ issues with it centers more around its insensitivity. It’s animated and so aimed at children, thereby formulating incorrect ideas about what really happened to kids in their formative years.
I am saying this and I like the movie, in spite of its being problematic. That does not make it any less problematic.

1) Beauty and the Beast (I love the relationship/romance between Belle and the Beast, love Lumiere and Mrs. Potts, and the music. I love both The Lion King & Beauty and the Beast equally, but personally Beauty and the Beast slightly takes over The Lion King)
2) The Lion King (Love this movie, love all the characters, the music, the story/plot. Everything.)
3) The Little Mermaid (Love Poor Unfortunate Souls, Under the Sea, and Kiss the Girl and Ariel and Sebastian)
4) Mulan (Love the song I'll Make a Man Out of You and Mulan is a great character.)
5) Aladdin (Fun movie to watch, love the song A Whole New World.)
6) Hercules (It's a fun comedic movie, but not one of my favorites. I do love Megara and Hades as characters and the Muses.)
7) The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Really good movie, love the songs except for Guy Like You, Quasimodo and Esmeralda are great characters, it's a dark movie so it's not as rewatchable and fun like the following 6 movies.)

The Renaissance Era is by far the BEST Era; nothing comes close to it! I believe the ranking for many of the films in this era would be up for dispute by many, as they have b some of the best stories, animation, songs, and characters. Maybe I am biased due to growing up watching these films of this era in my childhood, but this era of filmography is what captured the Disney Magic in my eyes. I have seen every last one of these films more than once, and nothing can compare to it.
I also grew up in the 90s and feel the same.

Regarding eras, does anyone else feel that Revival era probably should be considered to be over just because it has been going on a while and with many films. I don’t know if we are there yet, but maybe you could say that them starting to more traditional sequels with Wreck-It Ralph 2 and Frozen 2 was already a start, but we would need to know if this trend continues and what is in future to say for sure.
I totally agree with you here, I have to wonder if the Revival Era is truly still going cause we're at 12 films now! It's probably difficult to tell where the separation is between eras until we can look back on it and see the shifts and trends like you said. Starting with the recent sequels does make sense to me for a new era.
How could we tell we were in the Reinassance when we only had Little Mermaid and Rescuers Down Under, which couldn't be more different from each other? We just could't.
Only time will tell if the revival is or isn't over. Maybe Ralph Breaks the Internet and Frozen 2 were the start of a new era, or maybe exceptions (being sequels and all) in the middle of an era.
in my opinion the revival era ended with Moana ,after that it begun the second dark age or the post revival era
SENSE OF HONOUR keeps Belle there. Her promise saves her father, so staying is in service to another. Curiosity can affect only Belle herself, making the honour stakes less imposing.

We came back together in this ranking because I too don't like Beauty and the Beast as much. It is a gorgeous and fantastic Disney movie! But I just don't connect with it on the level as Aladdin, Lion King, Mulan and Little Mermaid.

Aladdin is my favorite 2D Disney movie of all time, perhaps my favorite animated movie ever. Perhaps it's because, aside from one brief viewing in preschool, for most of my childhood, I only had a casette version of the movie, so finally getting it as a present on DVD was pretty magical.
Plus, naturally, Genie is awesome. In Finnish, he was voiced by the Finnish comedian Vesa-Matti Loiri, who recorded all his lines without listening to Robin Williams's audio, allowing him to be more original with his jokes and celebrity imitations.
That’s so cool about the Finnish version! Glad the performance could still be original.

Speaking of Little Mermaid, what are your thoughts on the criticism of Ariel being roasted for being a weak and helpless damsel in distress?
Ariel's one of my all time favorite fictional characters for how she doesn't come off as a helpless damsel in distress. But, it was based on her battling enemies in one of the video games. When I was growing up in the 2000s, I was snarky at princess characters for being weak and girly sissies who do nothing but smile, look pretty, sing, and wait to be rescued by a prince.
In the movie, Ariel saves Flounder while outmaneuvering a shark at the same time, destroyed Ursula's eels in the climax, and saved Eric 2 times. But, everyone is claiming it's not good enough because Ariel had to be rescued in the 3rd act.
I feel like I'm loving Ariel for the wrong reasons where I thought she was a strong and independent heroine and not like most princess characters and many are calling her out for being weak and helpless and passive like Princess Peach, or Mary Jane Watson, or Bella Swan.
(I know Mary Jane and Bella are not princess characters but they are weak and helpless characters who can't take care of themselves.)
If people want to view Ariel as weak and helpless, they can do that, but I disagree. She's very young and made some wild choices that put her in crazy situations. Needing to be rescued from a giant sea witch doesn't exactly make you weak in my books haha. And you're right in pointing out that Ariel did save Flounder and Eric. Sometimes we just have to accept that with Disney movies, there will be certain tropes like a prince rescuing a princess, but it doesn't make the princess a bad character. And I like that The Little Mermaid let Ariel and Eric save each other. Ariel as a character has so much ambition and determination, and even if she needs help sometimes, her bravery shines through.
It’s so sas that Ariel is getting so much hate by the audience ever since the prequel to Little Mermaid came out, King Triton was truly traumatized by the event where his wife died because it doesn’t excuse his actions during the original film like Ariel was pointing out that Prince Eric could die from drowning but Triton didn’t even listen to her, ignored her cries and destroyed the treasures without remorse.
@@marvincorre4783 Actually Ariel has always been criticized since day 1 in 1989 for being too obsessive over a man she just met because it's shallow and sexist (mostly sexist), which is invalid because it's not sexist. It wasn't until the 2000s came in where the hatred got really bad.
I think it may have gotten worse when people found out about the alternative ending where Ariel was more active in the climax and had a proper arc where she learns and grows, weither it's through the Disney War book or the 2006 Platinum Edition DVD rerelease of The Little Mermaid. I can't confirm which caused the hatred to get worse in the 2000s. Either way, whatever caused the hatred to get worse and vocal nowadays, the hatred has gotten worse and I get a sense nowadays nobody seems to care about the film as a whole anymore because of how Ariel is looked down upon as badly written, helpless, and unlikable.
I hope the original film (and Ariel) doesn't become forgotten and erased from existence when the remake comes out because I'm worried that people are going to love the live action remake more than the original because of how the original film along with Ariel, have been getting blasted to bits.

I saw red when you ranked Tarzan at 9 but your rationale and description of it soothed me I think I tend to assume 9 or 10 means you think low of films so my 9 and 10 are Hercules and Beauty and the Beast and I don't care for either

First off I want to say amazing video, I can see your passion for these movies shine through and I know you probably won't see this because the video I over a year old but my list would differ a little from yours just because of personal preference. I can't stress enough how much of an affect Lion King had on me growing up I still get a little to emotional when watching it so it would be my number 1.
2. Aladdin, I agree with all points you said about it
3. Hercules, created my love for Greek mythology and the music is so amazing
4. Mulan, the villain literally gave me chills growing up and still has one of my favourite training montages in any movie
5. Tarzan, this came out when my family moved to a new country and it resonated with me also Phil Collins smashed this soundtrack
6. Beauty and the Beast, a classic story told in such a beautiful way and where everything held purpose and formed a part of the story from the castle to the rose
7. Little Mermaid, I didn't connect with it when I first watched it but really enjoyed the fun music but I grown to appreciate it more
8. Hunchback of Notre Dame, loved it when I first watched it but didn't pull me back for multiple viewings as the others did
9. Pocahontas, it is one of the best looking movies but didn't hook me that much, didn't connect with the love story as much

The Little Mermaid is definitely my top fave and my favorite Disney princess. I remembered loving that movie when Mom took me to the movie theater(I was five years old back then when the movie premiered) and Ariel was my first Disney Princess. Some of my friends and I in Kindergarten would pretend we were mermaids. It also started a mermaid craze in the early 90s as they would sell My Pretty Mermaids, Mermaid Barbies, etc. XD I remembered owning a few of them including my friends. Such good memories. :3
i love how you explain your reasons for ranking movies! even if i don’t agree, you offer a different perspective that i never thought of before. i never thought that mulan could be placed higher than beauty and the beast, but hearing your reasons definitely makes sense. i just can’t get behind pocahontas being ranked above beauty and the beast😂 i think the factual inaccuracies break the movie and immersion. i also found it incredibly boring… great message but the score, animation and character design of beauty and the beast is unmatched for me. i definitely agree with the rest though. the little mermaid has always been my favorite!
i could be biased though, i love howard ashman’s work and knowing that beauty and the beast was the last film he ever worked on just gives me chills! he would’ve been so proud had he lived to see the finished product

I'm keeping my hopes low just because I've been let down by most of the remakes. But I'd love for it to be good. I think Halle Bailey will do a great job. Most likely I'll do a review.
We have “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin” both at number and number 2, respectively! They’re both my top two favorite movies of the Disney Renaissance. Here is my ranking:
1. “The Little Mermaid” (The film that started the Renaissance era and just a great film in general. Ariel is my favorite Disney princess and people who complain about her character are overreacting and take her motivations out of context. I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s bothered by all of her detractors. You made a good point as to why Ariel gives up her voice for a man. It is established early on that she has a fascination with the human world. Her song, “Part of Your World”, is, of course, amazing (Jodi Benson has the voice of an angel), the other songs are also great, the side characters are great, Ursula is a great villain, and the animation is beautiful.)
2. “Aladdin” (One of the most magical films of the Renaissance. The late Robin Williams is phenomenal as the Genie. I also like Jafar and Iago as villains and the songs are great.)
3. “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (One of Disney’s darker movies, in terms of tone and themes (I say that in a good way). Quasimodo is a relatable protagonist, Frollo is a great villain and wonderfully voiced by Tony Jay. Also, his song, “Hellfire” is magnificent, as well as the other songs, like “Bells of Notre Dame”.)
4. “Beauty and the Beast” (A beautiful film. The animation is gorgeous and songs/characters are great.)
5. “The Lion King” (Mufasa’s death is heartbreaking, the animation, once again, is spectacular, and the songs/characters are memorable, with “Be Prepared” and Scar being my favorite, respectively.)
6. “Mulan” (Great, stylized animation, great songs and characters. I like Mushu, but I can understand why some people don’t like him.)
7. “Tarzan” (I’m not as bothered by the Phil Collins songs as everyone else, but “Blame Canada” from the “South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut” should have won the Oscar for Best Original Song that year. This is one of the most underrated movies of the Disney Renaissance. It has great characters and the animation and sweeping camera angles make this one of the most visually stimulating movies of the era. I also love the relationship of Tarzan and Jane.)
8. “The Rescuers Down Under” (A sequel done right. It is 1,000 times superior to the bland original. The animation and characters are better and McLeach and Joanna are wonderful villains.)
9. “Hercules” (I’m not really fan of the animation and Hercules and Meg are bland. However, I like some of the songs and I like Hades and Phil (I’m not a fan of Hades’s voice actor, though.))
10. “Pocahontas” (My least favorite Disney Renaissance film, period. What more needs to be said that hasn’t been said already? The only things I like about it are the animation, the animal comic reliefs (with one being a pug, as you can tell from my profile picture of my pug, Pepper, who unfortunately died two years ago from sepsis 😢), “Colors of the Wind”, “Just Around the Riverbend”, and “Savages” (despite the racist connotations)).
Note: My favorites in the Renaissance have changed over time. I used to have “Aladdin” at number 7, then number 4, but now it’s my second favorite movie from the Disney Renaissance. I didn’t have it on VHS or watch it much when I was kid, but I like it more and more every time I watch it. I also used to have “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at number 7, then number 6, then number 4, but it’s now my 3rd favorite movie of the Disney Renaissance. Like “Aladdin”, I like it more and more every time I watch it. I used to have “The Rescuers Down Under” at number 2, but I now put it at number 8. However, I still like “The Rescuers Down Under” and just because I have it low on the list, that doesn’t mean I think it’s bad. Heck, it’s vastly superior to the original. And last, I liked “The Lion King” a lot when I was a kid, and if I was still a kid, I would probably put it as my #1 favorite movie of the Disney Renaissance. But my favorite movie from the Disney Renaissance now is “The Little Mermaid”. I just like “The Little Mermaid”, “Aladdin”, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, and “Beauty and the Beast” more than “The Lion King”. Anyways, this is my new ranking of the Disney Renaissance.

in some ways, ariel is selfish, but it doesn't make her a bad character in my opinion.
Good video. Once more, I don't agree with your ranking, lol. Certainly you usually have uncommon opinions (not a bad thing, of course). I'd consider Beauty and the Beast the best movie of the Renaissance era. Alan Menken's songs are AMAZING in that one.
The best thing about this era for me is Alan Menken, who composed the songs for Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, Hunchback and Pocahontas.
The soundtrack of Lion King is amazing too, thanks to Hans Zimmer and Elton John.

I think you are off on some bits of Pocahontas but it’s your opinion. I will defend that movie but will agree some things didn’t work. It’s still a 9/10 for me and the missing 1 is actually a huge factor why it doesn’t get a ten. If you want to know then you ask. I do feel you come off kinda hard on the film.

@@thetroveyoutube Lack of Character development for Koccum and others, I felt the runtime was short unlike the other films released in this era 81 minutes 84 plus the Special Edition, The Romance, which I like, should have been spread out in days. (Granted this was an era and Company known for the falling in love day one cliche) The cutting of If I never knew you and Menken still regrets that decision to this day, even Roger Ebert said it was a dumb move as it would have helped the romance. and doing both a service and disservice of Ratcliffe (He and Frollo are my favorite villains from this era and they are nearly identical in their views, which makes you want to punch them), because I know you say the tribe was justified with there views against the colonist, but I don't know where you would stand on what they did to the real John Ratcliffe (Spoiler: It's bad). Thats all I have, and I pretend that sequel didn't exist because it's been exactly 20 years since I seen that movie and thankfully it was after my life saving surgery because I might have died seeing it before. Fuck John Rolfe (The Disney One), I like the relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas especially with the Special Edition. Hopefully, even though it could still happen, this is Disney we are talking about, a live action version doesn't happen. The reason I don't want it is not because of modern sensibilities, it's because unlike The Jungle Book, Christopher Robin, and Cruella (The last 30 minutes didn't need to be there), Disney has had a habit of fucking up the live action films. The rumor the went around is that Disney shelved Pocahontas not due to the NFL and MLB name changes, but what happened with Mulan 2020, and that was beyond levels of bad. I highly doubt Disney will touch Pocahontas ever again just cause of all the controversy that comes with it lol so don't think we have to worry about a live-action remake. At first I didn't mind the live-action Mulan, but after rewatching it and thinking about it, in my opinion it's pretty bad too. I only really like the Cinderella live-action remake.

My four favorites in order from bottom to top are Mulan, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Lion King. I only want to talk about Beauty and the Beast. Belle is and will always will be beauty inside and outside. The town doesn't see that so they can screw themselves in my opinion. Beast being what he was just thought that he should be angry because he is a beast. But Belle helps him love and appreciate what he has. He changes for her which is truly a selfless love and I am all for it.
Awesome choices! Beauty and the Beast does have a lovely message and theme.

10. Pocahontas. This movies sucks moving on
9. Rescuers down under. Not much to say. It was unnecessary and very forgettable
8. Hercules. A very cliché movie even by disney standards. I've never been a fan of prophecy movies and Hercules as a character is quite boring.
7. Little mermaid. I know this sounds old fashioned but this felt more like a "girls movie". I found Eric to be just a generic pretty boy. Ariel is a decent protagonist and the songs are very catchy and Ursula is a brilliant villain overall a decent movie.
6. Mulan. I really love this movie. I love that Mulan choses to fight to protect her father which shows how selfless she is (unlike the remake). Mushu while not needed is mostly funny. I love how Shang is conflicted over to trust Mulan after he finds out about her. Make a man out of you is easily among my favorite songs from disney. The villain however well I can't even remember his name. Overall a great film.
5. Lion King. I love this film. Simba's growth over responsibility and the lesson he learns from his father. Scar is in terms of enjoyment my favorite villain. Every song ranches from good to amazing and it's easy to see why this movie is loved.
4. Aladdin. I love the setting of this film, with the desert environments and as with lion king every song ranches from good to amazing. Genie is still hilarious to this day, Aladdin is one of my favorite protagonists and I love how he and Jasmine interact. Jafar I think is slightly overrated but still great. Overall one of my personal favorites
3. Tarzan. Honestly I think this movie deserves more love. The music is mostly great but very 90s. I love Tarzan's confliction over where he belongs. Jane I think the reason she's not considered a princess is because she's really a queen. Clayton is a pretty good villain because of the threat he poses and his death still gives me chills.
2. Hunchback of Notre Dame. Quasimodo is great protagonist with simple goals. I love how he comes to accept Esmeralda rejecting him thus making him stronger than Frollo. Speaking of Frollo he is easily one of my favorite villains period. Not just among disney but in movies in general. He kills all he deems lesser than himself, he mistreats those close to him and he justifies it for god. He sees corruption everywhere except within. The only reason this film is not number one is because of the gargoyles.
1. Beauty and the Beast. One of the best films ever made. Belle is a simple protagonist and I like her forgiving nature towards the Beast. Gaston is a great villain I love how outwardly he's strong handsome and well liked but it's just a façade to hide is insecurities. Beast is a brilliant character, I love how slowly but surely he changes for Belle and he truly earns her love. Once again the music ranges from great to amazing. I'm confident in saying beauty and the beast defines the disney formula.

I’m actually surprised Pocahontas was that high, I like to call it a romanticized fairytale.
It is definitely romanticized. I know there's a lot to criticize about Disney's version of this story, but I'm won over by the animation, music, and nostalgia.

I think you missed the whole point of pocahontas. Yes, historically speaking, it is not that accurate. However, the movie was essentially trying to say that regardless of what culture or country you are from, we are all humans. Our practices and beliefs may be different, but we can learn about each other.
Colors of the Wind boils down to: before you label someone different than you a savage, try to learn more about them and their culture.
The song Savages was about how both sides saw each other as evil
The European settlers came from a country where their society is, frankly speaking, more advanced than the natives. Houses are more sturdier and solid, technology and weapons are more advanced as well as education. Not to mention that their customs and religion and their reliance/use of gold and silver as a means for buying and selling. So when they see the natives dressing in simple deer skin, war paint, stone tools, etc they believe that the natives are primitive and savage.
The natives are more spiritual than the Europeans. They believe that everything has a spirit. They dont have any use for gold. If the men are not at war with other tribes, then they spend most of the day hunting and fishing while the women tend to the children, crops, and other household chores. When they see the Europeans tearing up the land for material that the natives have no use for, nor know its value, they believe that the settlers have no respect for nature and are just violent. To the natives, this is savagery.
Furthermore, what lead to the natives and settlers nearly killing each other was an unfortunate situation. The man that was supposed to marry pocahontas, kocoum, sees her kissing John and believes that he is trying to steal her from him. So he attacks and try's to kill John out of jealousy. Thomas, the settler that was ordered to follow and observe John's actions, shoots and kills kocoum to save John. This was the nail in the coffin
Also, the actual villain of the movie was ratcliffe. He's your typical greedy power hungry jerk that is more concerned about wealth than anything else. The settlers lowered their weapons and weren't going to fight after the chief released John. Ratcliffe didn't care and attacked anyway.
well the redesign on Mrs Potts was because she was done then by the iconic Emma Thompson, so it would be kinda hard to reckognize her, if doing the character much alike the original animated person. In fact both her and Lumiere were changed a lot from the original so the actors doing their roles as Thompson and Ewan McGregor on him would still be reckognized. Of course they didn´t make it for all the roles, and so it came as surprises how Stanley Tucci and Ian McKellen were Cadenza and Cogsworth respectively later on when returning being humans again.
Oh boy. This is the era I grew up.
10: Pocahontas (the lowest point of the Renaissance. I get what people say about the animation being amazing and some good songs but this movie was Katzenberg's ego trip as far as I'm concerned and while the message of equality is a good one, a later Disney movie would have that message as well and did it a million times better.)
9. The Rescuers Down Under (by the way, from here on in every movie from the Renaissance is a beloved movie for me. I wish Bernard and Bianca had a bit more to do but as it is this is a very solid sequel.)
8. Hercules (this one and the next 2 are interchangeable but I'm putting this one here for now. Hades is hilarious and the love story is well done.)
7. Mulan (a little less of the sexist advisor would've been nice but still a strong movie.)
6. Tarzan (a story about being torn between where you came from and where you were raised. An excellent adaptation of the novels.)
5. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (if it weren't for the character of Hugo, this might've gone higher. Sorry, I have my limits when it comes to annoyance.)

3. The Little Mermaid (I used to hate this movie because of how often my now deceased sister used to play it when we were kids. But after watching it last year, I actually like it again. I enjoy the story of Ariel wanting something else than what the ocean has to offer. Now if only I can get a woman to look at me the way Ariel looks at Eric on the ship.)

Beauty and the Beast (this one was also almost ruined by my sister overplaying it when we were kids but how can I hate a movie with such a beautiful love story, excellent character development for both Belle and the Beast, a great fight scene at the end, and all those great songs? And really this would've been my favorite Disney movie of all time, but, well...)

Don’t you think it is a bit of a shame that Disney isn’t very keen on making a live action Pocahontas but they have done it to all the classic Disney Princess films and no Lego set of Pocahontas not even a musical theatre performance of Pocahontas 😢

The Rescuers Down Under: Cool movie, not gonna lie, but pretty much the opposite of "The Rescuers." If you recall me talking about it, I said as a kid you enjoy this, but as an adult you realize that it's not enough. In this case, the opposite is true. As a kid you enjoy this, but as an adult you realize....there's too much! There's too much action! Too much fast-paced movement! Too much sadism! Too much adventure! Too much humor! Too much terror! There's not enough romance and subtlety. Yeah, it's a cool movie, but it lacks subtlety.
Tarzan: While South Park's popularity was on this rise, this movie proved that Disney is still king. Yes, their main reason for not having Tarzan sing was pretty hypocritical. They said, "We just can't imagine a half-naked full-grown man in a loincloth breaking out into song." My response to this is, "Dude. You've had a sixteen year old girl wearing nothing but a pair of seashells on her massive breasts break out into a song! What's the problem?" That's also my response to when Disney deemed Slave Leia merch inappropriate for children. Saying a grown woman in a gold bikini is inappropriate for children. I'm like "Dude. You sell plastic dolls and other merchandise of a sixteen year old GIRL wearing nothing but a pair of seashells on her massive breasts! WHAT is the problem?!!"
The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Yeah, it's not a happy sunny Disney movie. It's pretty dark, but it's realistic. It shows that often those that brag that they are pure and virtuous are the most evil people of all. People say the gargoyles aren't necessary, but....if they weren't real and just imaginary friends they would fit as symbols of what Quasimodo's years of virtual isolation have done to him. Only I wouldn't make three, I'd just say "Jason Alexander as a fun-loving gargoyle? That's the only imaginary friend Quasimodo needs!" Also it shows that loving someone sometimes means letting them go when Quasimodo accepted that Phoebus was a genuinely good man and not a stereotypical boastful soldier, and that he was the one Esmeralda needed.
Beauty and the Beast: ......what? How does a movie that almost beat "Silence of the Lambs" as the greatest movie of the year rank so lowly on any top list? As for the plotholes, I believe that the Beast is twenty-one years old and has been for twenty-one years. I think when the narrator says "which would bloom until his twenty-first year," he doesn't mean "twenty-first birthday," he means "twenty-first year as a Beast." As for the whole "ten years we have been rusting line," when you're coming up for the lyrics in a song, you have to take syllable count into account. "Ten" fits in much more easily than "twenty-one."
Pocahontas: *sigh!* I am TIRED of having to defend this movie! First of all, we're all taught when we're teenagers that underage marriage and dating were perfectly legal hundreds of years ago and was common practice. Yes, we all know that John Smith didn't really date Pocahontas, but people STOP saying that he couldn't have! Secondly, if Disney told it how John Smith REALLY described it, a racist middle-aged white man seeing a beautiful native girl and spending time with her, what parent would take their child to see that? They HAD to make her older for this movie!
The deep purpose of "Savages" though is that it serves a purpose. That being if two sides are so similar in hate, it's possible they could be similar in love and respect as well.
The natives aren't turning the other cheek, they're taking the high road by forgiving the settlers for all that they've done to them.
As far as racism goes though, I HIGHLY doubt Mel Gibson would've gotten John's role if this movie were made after 2004....
Mulan: So underappreciated. The action's good, the humor's good, the romance...leaves a little to be desired, and the sense of honor and devotion to family and country is REALLY good!
Thank goodness they didn't go with the ACTUAL ending where the Emperor takes her from her home, turns her into his sex-slave, and she kills herself in her grief.
Hercules: It's a good movie, but it's not the REAL story of Hercules! It's a Superman parody!
In the REAL story, Hercules was a mortal prince exiled from his kingdom to the mountains for killing his music teacher. Eventually he married the princess Megara, but his father's wife, Hera hated him and caused him to go mad and kill her and their children together. To cleanse himself of his sin, he became a slave to his cousin and was forced to perform twelve impossible tasks. Once they were completed, he married again only this wife accidentally killed him by pouring a monster's blood into a new tunic she made for him.
Not to mention all the other inaccuracies. The Titans were an army of humanoid gods, not five elemental monsters and a cyclops. Zeus didn't send Hades to the Underworld, they and their brother Poseidon drew lots to determine who became kings of Heaven, the Sea, and the Underworld, and honestly Hades LIKED it down there because he wasn't only God of the Dead, he was God of Wealth because he owned all the precious metals and stones in the Earth. Early man had to make sacrifices to Hades before taking anything that belonged to him. He didn't hate his younger brother Zeus even though he rarely saw him, and he didn't torture the dead except for the sinful.
Inaccuracies aside, the biggest problem with this movie is this: If the Fates truly knew everything, as they claimed, why did they bother trying to cut Hercules's Thread of Life in the first place? Wouldn't they have known he would become a god at that point?
Also, Meg risked HER life to save Hercules after having the courage to do what was right and oppose her master, Hades. Why didn't SHE become a true hero herself?
I'd say Meg's singing's more the audible equivalent of eating cinnamon sugar. It's sweet, but it's got that hint of spice that makes it perfect.
The Lion King: Surprising. Most people think it's the greatest Disney movie ever made. Hmmm, maybe you've met my cousin. He'll talk your ear off about it to the point where the very thought of it can annoy you.
Aladdin: Agreed. Hot raven haired babe, sadistically charming villain, well-intentioned troublemaker, and early 90's Robin Williams allowed to go all-out. Need I say more?
Although the whole "lie to get the girl you love even to her own face" issue is there, it can be overlooked.
The Little Mermaid: All my childhood, I was called a weirdo by the boys for claiming this was my third favorite Disney movie after "The Lion King" and "Aladdin." I just loved this movie. It was fun, it was beautiful, wonderful singing, wonderful characters, it had action, romance, manipulation, sadism, heroism, it's WONDERFUL!!!

As for Beauty and the Beast, it would rank a lot higher if I was making a purely unbiased "Best to Worst" list, but this ranking is based on my personal enjoyment - favorite to least favorite.
I think Megara didn't become a "true hero" after saving Hercules because she was always a human. Hercules was a god when he was born. I'm assuming they're the only ones that this applies to. Also, I completely agree with you that Meg's voice is cinnamon sugar. That element of spice can't be denied. Great comment haha.
I think that learning to be honest and be himself was the main part of Aladdin's arc in his movie, so that's why he's always lying to Jasmine and then learns to stop in the end.

I love Little Mermaid, but it is my 3rd favorite in that era. Hunchback and Tarzan are my top 2, but Little Mermaid is a almost masterpiece if Eric was a good love interest
