There's no songs in Mulan after the point where she sees war for the first time. The whole tone of the film changes. I think it's a good thing (and this is coming from a theatre kid)
It subtly shows how war changes people, the soldiers are all goofy and fun until the war becomes real to them. Shang has a song but he is never happy/goofy throughout it unlike the rest of the characters; you see him sad, worried and proud of his men (the only time we see him happy in the song). I didn't notice the lack of songs in the movie until I bought the soundtrack on its own.
Song in musiculs arent always meant to be happy... They are literally the expression of the character when they become so overwhelmed with emotion that talking doesnt suit the expression. A song about war could have been very powerful
The reason mulan has so few songs is because after the scene where they reach the Tung Shao pass, the film was supposed to have a lot more of a darker tone. Hence the lack of songs in the second half
@@BlackCommissar yes! Because instead of fighting for an attractive girl back home who they're trying to marry, they're now fighting for the innocent girl who was killed by the Huns (the owner of the doll they find). Its so good.
I mean I guess that makes sense but it doesn’t follow the musical theatre format. The character are supposed to speak until the emotion gets so high that they have to sing until the emotion gets so high that they have to dance. So if the emotion was higher that would technically mean that the second act would have more songs. Idk, just something to think about. I personally think it could hav even written better
Reflection is a great song and I love it, but it was a bit forgettable. Every other song in Mulan was solid, especially I’ll Make a Man Out Of You. Whenever that song plays, you’ve gotta sing along. I once did a Don’t Sing challenge with friends and family, and when I’ll Make a Man Out Of You played, it was *painful* trying not to sing
It's not forgetable if you feel that song describes you in the certain point of your life or you feel emotionally connected to the character. It's one of these songs that is not "wow, powerrrr" or at least not if you don't struggle with similar issues that are described in the song 🤷🏻♀️ i felt like i don't fit in any role in this world so "reflection" has a special place in my heart
Reflection is my favorite song from Mulan, it’s a song I was able to see myself in (lol) regarding my sexuality. It really helped me come to terms with who I am.
Honestly surprised that Mulan only got 7, I LOVE Mulan!! Also Mulan stops having musical numbers the SECOND they see the destruction the Huns left in that one town. They realize the war they're in is devastatingly real, and the songs subsequently stop because of that
I actually think Mulan gets significantly better once the songs STOP, which is a bizarre thing to say about a Disney film. But from the moment they find that town (stopping the mediocre "Girl Worth Fighting For" dead in it's tracks) the movie is a virtually flawless war drama with incredible imagery and action set pieces.
@@chuckbatman5 I kinda like "Girl worth finding for"! It's specially great because it makes the Village ruins even more impactful with how drastic the change is
the lion king narrative is more fundamentally appealing. Mulan has a female empowerment narrative. Not all cultures accept that sort of thing, but Lion King has virtually nothing particularly divisive about it, except if you look at it as a communist
@@denisebejarano2905 yeah, I dont remember Pocahantas with much fondness, and once I REALLY learned about Pocahontas the person and her relationship to John Smith, that movie took a whole different spin. Uh uh
But the thing I liked about the Mulan villain was the fact that when Mulan was revealed to be the soldier from the mountains, he wasn't like everyone else said something like "a WoMaN?!?!?!!?!??!", he respected her as an opponent and a soldier and that was everything to tiny little me who grew up with heavy gender roles
I read somewhere that at that time period the huns were actually way more respectful to women than many other cultures were. Idk how true it is or not since I just read it somewhere online but it would make sense if that was the case
Schafrillas: "These movies are all about achieving impossible dreams" Few lines later: "Pocahontas is *TRAAAAASH* " I don't know why but this cracks me up
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is by *far* the most underrated Disney movie. I can't believe many people haven't even heard of this movie, let alone watch it.
Schaffrillas' Top 3 Movie Moments: 3. Mufassa Cloud talks to Simba -Lion King (1994) 2. Holding Out For A Hero - Shrek 2 (2004) 1. *SHINY* - Moana (2016)
I just wanna say my opinion on Penguins of Madagascar There were definitely good elements in the movie but a majority of the movie is forgettable. The villain is bland and generic just like the new characters. Although I like the action scenes. The forced relationship between Kowalski and The Owl was just plainly annoying The acting is pretty good but the stand out is Private and having the central plot around him sounds stupid but actually works. This movie is just forgettable, bland but has memorable moments this movie gets a 5/10
@@ajwrestling7855 I sorta thought of it as being kinda like Minions, in that it was trying to take an excellent minor part of a movie that works in small doses, but kinda falls flat because you can't just stretch that idea out into a whole movie (only not as childish as Minions) also, I did not notice that he said happy feet while showing the penguins of madagascar
OKAY BUT DID YOU FORGET? Little Mermaid was the last Disney film to be completely hand drawn. There were other 2D films but they used computer technology. All of those bubbles? HAND DRAWN! it’s really a visual MASTERPIECE
Yes and no, you can clearly see some sort of CG in Eric's ship, heck, even in Oliver, an 80s movie, you could clearly see CG in the cement truck during the "Why Should I Worry" song.
@@Sugurain True, but The little mermaid was the last film to have the backgrounds painted fully by hand. But computer animation had been used to some extent since The Black Cauldron. I guess The fox and the hound was the last film to be 100% animated by hand.
Fun fact: The Lion King wasn’t expected to be much. It was treated as more of a side movie that wasn’t meant to do that well, while Pocahontas was expected to be the real deal which would make a ton of money and be a hit with audiences and critics. Pocahontas earned mostly middling reviews and wasn’t exactly that much big of a hit, while The Lion King earned fantastic reviews and became one of the highest grossing animated movies of all time.
For me, Hunchback will always be the best movie, because of how brave, inspiring and heart-breaking it is. The scene when that little girl approches Quasimodo, touches his face and hugs him, leaves me sobbing every single time. The musical is also one of my favorites, and I enjoyed the book as well, but the Disney film captures its magic so perfectly in tiny details, and the score is so wonderful. I love that Heaven-Hell narrative expressed EVERYWHERE in the movie, and both Heaven's Light (one of my favorite songs ever) and Hellfire one after the other. I didn't really understand the film as a kid, I simply liked seeing gypsies represented, as I myself grew up in a gypsie community, but this film is not only dark and deep, but also powerful and groundbreaking. I learnt to love it as a teen. Every time I see it, it brings something new. This movie will stay with me for the rest of my life❤️
Schaffrillas: Doesn’t want to stir up any more controversy Also Schaffrillas: Disses Phil Collins and then goes on to immediately rank Mulan in the bottom 4
Well compared to a lot of the other renaissance movies it isn't as good as them. Personally I felt there was something missing from the movie when I rewatched it and that's why I wouldn't rate it as high as some of the other ones.
Simba dejectedly saying “that’s just my reflection,” then Rafiki responding with “no, look harder...” and then the water rippling over and transforming into a vision of Mufasa looking so disappointed, and Rafiki continues with “see, he lives in you,” is just such a chilling and powerful moment.
I also love how they did it in the stage version. After that line, Rafikki sings a reprise of the song He Lives In You, making a callback when Mafusa sang it to Simba when he was young

I love how you really enjoyed the part when Mulan's father just throw the gifts and hugged Mulan. It is just so heartening. Despite the rank being #7, I love how you liked Mulan. It just makes me happy.
Still saddens me that Disney+ doesn’t have that extra scene in Beauty and the Beast where the castle gets cleaned up, all the servants being hopeful of being human, and then seeing Belle and the beast reading together 🥹 that one little moment between them left me such an impression as a child, like gosh it’s the cutest thing ever and I wish I had a vhs player 😭💔💔💔
@@Plumpus3545 sucks even more knowing that they can easily go back to that format but often choose not to. Feels like they think of what will sell best as merchandise above all else that matters in a decent film. As giant as they are they could make more originals instead of relying on adaptations of existing properties, but only time will tell😞
I am thrilled about that, because that extra "Human Again" scene is such an obvious extension to the film that doesn't add anything (plus the song is the worst in the movie).
i liked human again, dont shoot me, it added more atmosphere to the film and made the timeline of them falling in love more realistic by communicating time through seasons and showing hope building throughout the castle.
A really refreshing take on Hercules. All I've heard about this movie is negativity due to huge tonal differences and huge Greek misunderstanding of mythology but I still have always enjoyed its quirkiness so I'm glad to find other people do.
One little detail I’ve always appreciated about The Lion King is during the final battle, there are a few frames where Simba’s face looks almost like Mufasa’s.
@@yessyvascielo1131 Disagree. They had very different facial structures and mane shapes. Mufasa was very exaggerated in his features, large jaw, small eyes, wide face, and huge shoulders. Adult Simba's mane was literally modeled after Bon Jovi's hair, and he has much softer features, smaller head and larger eyes.
I want to see him do Rock dog, Moana, Shrek the Musical, The Good Dinosaur, Brave, Happy Feet, James Corden, Emma Watson, Cars 2, Prince of Egypt, Lego movies, The Kung Fu Panda trilogy and The Spongebob duology (With the tv special that pretends it’s a movie) and the 2019 Lion King Reboot since he keeps talking about them, but never gave them it’s own video Tell me if I missed anything
I’m probably gonna regret saying this, but honestly the Hunchback of Notre Dame would be one of the few Disney movies that could actually benefit from a live action adaption. No gargoyles, not cartoonish, and explore more dark themes and be more accurate to the source material and it could actually be a great movie.
Just a note, Mel Gibson's accent is on point. The British accent we hear today did NOT develop until after the American Revolution. So all the other characters actually stand out. Americans still speak with a rhotic accent which is what most people of Britain, Scotland, etc, spoke with way back then. We are more akin to speaking how Shakespeare did now than the British do. Once the loyalists returned to the UK, the people of London started teaching themselves how to speak in a fancier manner to separate rich from poor, but that failed. Everyone has picked up some of the posh accent and it developed into multiple dialects of today. So yeah....Cary Elwes is a worse Robin Hood in terms of speech. ;)
the same exact thing happened with brits and americans using feet and miles. britain changed decades ago and now it would be immensely too expensive to change to the metric system in america lol
Ok I know Brits at the time didn't have what we think of today as a "classic English accent" BUT also no they did not sound exactly like modern day Americans. 😅 Mel Gibson's accent ain't on point.
I may be a bit disappointed by Mulan's low placement, but acknowledging that Eric wasn't the only reason why Ariel wanted her legs kind of makes up for it.
Yea I was watching Draw Off and one of the animators that worked on Lion King was mentioning how the animators split into two groups for the first time - A and B. The A group went to work on Poncahontas and the B group (younger less experienced people) went to work on Lion King.
Gotta love Disney executives in the 90s: "Pocahontas is gonna be a masterpiece. And it's gonna so successful it's gonna blow people's minds! Oh, yeah... and there's also Lion King, i guess. I don't know, that movie is gonna flop anyway.
They were going for a Best Picture nomination like they got with Beauty and the Beast but didn't realize what made that movie get a nomination, ie its amazing writing and well-written characters, especially in the arc for the Beast. The ONLY thing Pocahontas did was have amazing animation. They had the best of the best animating this, and it looks fluid and beautiful. They wanted people to believe this was an important, meaningful story without actually giving one.
@@Account_Not_Applicable It's honestly sad that the Lion King didn't get a best picture nomination. While I honestly love Pocahontas (to each their own) The Lion King is one of the most genius movies ever conceived. Take one of the greatest stories ever written, Hamlet, and add the Disney energy. Charming characters, hilarious jokes, more heartfelt moments, and incredible songs, it creates one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. In my opinion, it's one of the best animated movie of all time, second only to possibly Inside Out (fight me).
You can love Disney executives now, this is almost a word for word repeat of the Moana/Zootopia situation where the latter ended up netting almost a ten times it's budget in profit with next to no ads for it, little less than double what Moana made.

I really think Mulan is top tier. The Hun's charge down the mountain is in my opinion the coolest looking scene in a Disney movie that isn't Lion King or Encanto
I feel like you misunderstood Mulan. The songs are few because it wouldn't be fitting to have many songs in probably the most serious Disney move. The last song stops dead when they first get thier real taste of war. The villan also isn't really the hun. Yes he is the bad guy, but he isn't her main struggle. Mulans real villan is her struggle with society and honor, and her overcoming them not with superpowers or some lucky break. She has to work for it, and even harder because she is a women. She shows that regardless of who you are, you can get much farther with hard work than you can with talent.
This is purely semantics, but Shan Yu, whom I almost called Shao Khan, is definitely the villain. He is a menacing figure who directly threatens the main character and supporting cast, with the removal of his presence leading to a drastically different tone. However, the antagonist is society, opposing any sort of respect for Mulan initially. The plot, tone, and themes are reflected by Mulan's goal to bring honor to her family and society's constant attempts to keep her down.
>says there are Brave fans >says Pocahontas is garbage >Pocahontas fans exist Here we go again. Edit: Also thanks for saying Ariel is a great protagonist :D Edit 2: holy hell these replies
Beauty and the Beast at #1. You could not have been more right. An unfinished (unfinished in animation terms, not narrative) version of this film debuted at the LA Film Festival to a standing ovation so… yeah. The last Disney film to get a similar response was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when Walt Disney showed an unfinished, partially unanimated version of the film to an investor from Bank of America, who responded with, “Yeah, it’s gonna be a smash hit. Tell me how much you need.” This film is an absolute triumph. The sheer amount of human emotion that the animators put on the faces of these characters rocks me to my core every single time I watch this film. I love this film on a personal, nostalgic adventure but I can confidently say that it 1000000% holds up in my adult eyes 32 years after the release of this absolute masterpiece.
This is a good line up, but my only critic is on how you judged Mulan based off of its musical score and its villain component. I feel that the main point of the short musical score to the movie is to truly establish the adult themes like war and mass loss in a way that light hearted musical movies by Disney couldn’t do. Compared to the rest of the movies in the list, Mulan has the most realistic and current theme regarding that it’s about war. While Disney villains are often made to be animated in their characters and whimsical while still being evil, the leader of the Huns is truly a villain to the core, having no musical scores dedicated to him along with no moments to show any type of humanity from him. In his opening with heartlessly killing one of the messengers because only one is needed, it’s clear that this villain is much darker than the others found in Disney. As the movie begins and goes on, the light hearted music and jovial overall atmosphere of the movie subtly gets across that even though Mulan is sacrificing a lot, she still doesn’t truly understand what she’s facing when it comes to the brutal war. That’s what makes the short score so powerful; there is not another scene much like the one where “A Girl Worth Fighting For” is suddenly cut off by the gruesome and sad image of an entire town burnt down due to unforgiving war. From that moment on, not another song is sung, which subtly establishes how war is such a gruesome and dark theme that cannot be given a whimsical spin with a song. The incredible choice of the placement of the songs along with the abrupt cut off for the rest of the movie really establishes the heavier themes, the true villain, and it even highlights the victory in the end, aiding the empowered woman ending without making it obnoxious. Mulan’s lack of connection to the villain shows how little humanity there is in war, and I think it was intentional instead of lazy writing. Mulan is my favorite Disney film and there are many reasons why, but its subtle yet wise choices in music and characterization are major reasons.
“The villain is much darker than other Disney villains”. Well, apart from Frollo, Chernabog, and the Horned King, of course. (The former two both have musical scores dedicated to them, and they’re still evil to the core.)
Far Long I’m not super well versed on all of the Disney villains, so thank you for pointing this out! Disney can get pretty dark considering it’s tailored more to children haha.
The scene where Shan Yu sees Mulan and recognizes her as "the soldier from the mountain" actually makes perfect sense. Shan Yu is the only male character in the movie who doesn't care about Mulan's gender once he meets her. He represents her final test because he is not sexist like the rest, he just wants to fight. To him, Mulan is just an enemy. By fighting him, Mulan proves herself to be not just strong for a woman, but strong in absolute. Mulan is my all-time favourite Disney movie and he's one of the main reason why: the "we shouldn't judge people by their gender, but by their skill" message it has could have only been conveyed with a villain that doesn't care about gender, and who is instead all about skill.
another thing that's cool about that scene that I disagree with schaff about it's that him not having a connection to Mulan make sense because she was just a random girl who became a great warrior
Jafar was an amazing Disney villain, is casual manipulation, sarcasm and sneering ARE PERFECT and seeing hum slowly lose his shit more and more is just perfection and then he goes nut job crazy.
"Be prepared" should be nr 1. With "Friends on the other side" a close second. (The only good thing about that train wreck of a movie.) I do wonder however why 4 dozen eggs did not make it in to the remake of Beauty and the Beast?
But she’s not even a Princess tho, she’s a war hero who has respect from not only the Emperor but all of China, but she’s not royalty, she’s born from a Local Farming Family and the closet she’d be to royalty would be marrying that General lad
@@wisdommapping9406 I mean, Mulan's dad is a respected warrior even by the asshole counselor man, but Disney treats her like a princess for saving China in the movie.
Im glad you gave Beauty and the Beast the recognition it deserves. I feel it is overlooked with the more of the fun light hearted disney movies. I think Beauty and the Beast is among the best movies ever made. I have like 20 or so movies I consider God tier and I would definitely include B and B on there. Lion King is incredible but even at 9.5/10, it is still not a 10.
A Girl Worth Fighting for is abrutly cut short and is the last musical number in the movie because the reality of war sets in, and for much of the rest of the film songs no longer seem appropriate
Gonna say, there is exactly one stand-out character in Pokahontas and that's Ratcliffes butler. This man is a delight every single one of the few times he opens his precious mouth.
Fun fact: the genie was one of the first cases of a role being written specifically for a certain celebrity. Also, I adore the opening for Aladdin involving that creepy guy selling stuff.
So his main points of criticism for Mulan are that many parts of the film didn’t follow the generic Disney template. I’d argue most are strengths of the movie which make it stand out from other films as a grounded, personal experience rather than something overly fantastical. Some of his arguments straight up misinterpreted the movie, i.e the cricket ruining Mulan’s matchmaking. It’s supposed to be a lucky cricket, and the matchmaking being ruined is a catalyst to her becoming the hero of China. The only point I could agree on is that Mushu is incredibly grating for the majority of his screen time.
I think the movie is spectacular, but I would agree that having her character be part of the reason (it could’ve been started by the cricket) contribute more to her failing the match making ceremony would enhance it just a bit more
>everyone else pissed because you insulted Brave/Pocahontas/insert bad film here >meanwhile I'm fuming because you called the LEOPARD in Tarzan a "Cheetah"
BB Gunz170 EXACTLY. Even ignoring that it looks nothing like a jaguar... Why would there be a jaguar in AFRICA?? watch some damn Big Cat Diary people ffs Edit for more info: Not only does it look nothing like a cheetah, in spot pattern or body shape... more importantly, cheetahs cannot climb trees, because they have doglike paws more suited to running, rather than catlike paws with retractable claws (which are ideal for climbing). Also, a cheetah would NEVER go after a gorilla... cheetahs are small, and always go after small prey like gazelles. Lions can't really climb well either, but for a different reason - they have the right paw structure, but they're simply too heavy/big to climb once they're adults, generally.
@@Emily-lb7rf I agree. Mulan and Hercules are pretty equal, but I think Mulan's songs are a little more memorable. Hunchback, idk. I've never actually watched it.
"the emotions conveyed through simple facial expressions, vibrant colors, expressive movements, all the things that can only be encapsulated through animation." is that shading the 2019 version i see?
If it is then I agree. The remake sucked all of the emotions out and all the animals only had one expression. I know they don't express emotions the same way humans do, but once you decide to make them realistic as possible, it ruins what made the original film so beloved to begin with.
Fun fact: Esmeralda’s goat was actually an original character from Victor Hugo’s novel. It was just a happy coincidence for Disney that the goat existed.
Thats not Phoebus that leaves with the goat, its a Poet that kinda tell the story. Phoebus is a total trash in the novel. He just want to smash Esmeralda despite being married since two day. He let her die because he doesnt want to be discredited. Also Quasimodo die by burying himself alive with Esmeralda corpse
I always disliked how they did the "both sides are wrong!!!!" thing with pocahontas (disclaimer, I'm not native american) were the native americans always these perfect, spiritual, and kind people? no, native americans are human too, there are certainly native americans that did shitty things, as with every single group of people on the entire planet. but the anglo-powhatan wars weren't really this morally grey issue like pocahontas the movie portrays it as. the british settlers completly took advantage of the native americans initial kindness and welcoming. what the british did to them is unacceptable. the native americans were right to defend themselves and react the way they did, unlike the movie which seems to make a mockery of this tragic story. it implies that the native americans shouldn't have fought back and that the solution was just love and acceptance. even tho in reality the only love in the actual story of the real pocahontas (she was actually known as matoaka, and born as amonute. pocahontas was just a nickname) was the fake love of john rolfe and the innocent native american woman he kidnapped from her people, her father, and the fellow native american husband that she already had again, native americans arent infallible, but the anglo-powhatan wars had a very clear villian
Many scholars don't believe Kocoum (Pochahontas' alleged first husband) actually existed, and the only known record that mentions the name "Kocoum" is believed by some to actually be referring to John Rolfe because of when it was written, John Rolfe wasn't even remotely involved with her kidnapping, their marriage actually created a brief period of peace between the colonists and the Powhatans, and as far as I can tell there was legitimate love between them.
I respect your opinions but I think you did Mulan dirty. Mulan is a great movie and the perfect female protagonist. Also why you gotta do my man Phil Collins like that?
I freaking love Mulan. Less songs yes, but Reflection and I’ll Make a Man Out of You are amazing, not to mention the non-singing soundtrack is amazing too. Mulan is a great character, I love how she outsmarts the villain instead of just like beating him in a fist fight. I could go on, but nobody’s gonna read this anyway😂
I thought Mulan would be much higher on the list since I never knew about Hunchback and Hercules, but after watching those 2 movies, I believe they're better overall, I still think Mulan should have been above aladdin though.
Emperor’s New Groove, Atlantis, and Treasure Planet are some of the most memorable and my favorites of the short time after the renaissance. I know people like them a lot but they’re not mentioned as often
8 year old me was more interested in the songs and Beasts transformation with beauty and the beast. However just last year when I rewatched beauty and the beast I could finally understand and see how their love blossomed. This made me find a new love for Belle and I think she mightve been the first Disney princess at the time who had a personality.
Hercules has 2 of my favourite interactions in any movie ever: Zeus: "Hades?! You're behind this?!?!" Hades: "You are correct sir!" And Zeus (taking to Hermes): "GOOOO GOOOO!" Hermes: "Gone babe!"
I think this might be better...: Hades: I can't believe this guy! I throw everything I've got at him, and it doesn't even... [Hades notices Pain is wearing Air-Hercs] Hades: What... are... those? Pain: Um, I don't know. I-I thought they looked kinda dashing... Hades: [slowly burns up] I've got 24 hours to get rid of this... bozo, or the entire scheme I've been setting up for 18 years goes up in smoke, and YOU ARE WEARING HIS MERCHANDISE? [Hades hears a noise, and sees Panic slurping some "Herculade"] Panic: [chuckles nervously] Thirsty? [Hades screams, and blows up a volcano]
Fun fact, the 3D camera from the dance scene from Beauty and the Beast inspired the 3D camera from the Pokemon X and Y anime, A.K.A. my favorite show of all time.
I might be biased because Mulan is one of my favourite Disney films, but I just wanted to point out a few things that go against the arguments in the movie. A lot of the criticism for it was based off of the villain and the score. But the villain in this movie isn’t really a traditional Disney villain. The film is based off a real story about war and Mulan’s place in it. It just wouldn’t make sense to have the leader of the Huns have some personal grudge or connection to Mulan because neither of them have time for that and there’s way too many people involved anyway. It’s a war. I would even go as far as saying that the Huns are not even the TRUE “villains” of the story. Mulan doesn’t fear the Huns for majority of the movie, and her conflicts and exile aren’t even caused by them most of the time. She fears being found out, and her own friends and peers are the ones who allow her exile. The Huns help drive the plot forward but the real source of conflict for Mulan is honour and societal expectations: men are forced to fight in wars (seen with Mulan’s crippled father and the struggle of undertrained and unhappy soldiers), and women are only honourable if they are wives (no explanation needed). It introduces an abstract concept as a villain, and the fact that ANYBODY, even your own family, friends and allies can be a part of the problem, not just “the bad guy”. The score itself revolves around that conflict, and does so in such an ironic way that it should weigh over having less musical numbers (Honour to us all, I’ll make a man out of you, A girl worth fighting for). The resolution of the movie is not that the Huns are defeated, it’s that Mulan overcame those rigid conventions and brought honour to herself and her family. Honour and respect is a HUGE part of East Asian culture, but from a western viewpoint its significance might not be as apparent which is understandable. But that’s what makes it so different from the traditional Disney film, and that’s what I love about it.
Honestly I loved the ending and the message, it was different, I enjoyed it and I never really cared about the villain; everybody just paid attention to Mulans mental state
wait do people jump on the mulan score? that shits fire, maybe it’s because it reminds me heavily of okami for obvious reasons and that’s one of the best games ever made but the score was so good
I recently saw Beauty and the Beast as a play, it was the first play I've been to and even though I never watched the movie, the play was just so beautiful, its such a joyful story and the tale as old as time song makes me feel like I'm in love
Never even thought about that. Another reason to love Mulan.
Literally scrolled down to give this exact comment.
wow never thought of that..thats actually pretty smart on disneys part...progressive...now I like the film more...thanks
I like that A Girl Worth Fighting For stops abruptly as the characters come to terms with reality and doesn’t add any more songs afterwards
Especially, when "A girl worth fighting for" completely changes its meaning in a few minutes

@@Bobo12300 *most emotional

Honestly surprised that Mulan only got 7, I LOVE Mulan!! Also Mulan stops having musical numbers the SECOND they see the destruction the Huns left in that one town. They realize the war they're in is devastatingly real, and the songs subsequently stop because of that
Let's not forget how great Reflections is as well, I love Mulan as well! Definitely needed to be higher, I'd probably put it in the top 3

Exactly! I was actually surprised he didnt react that way.
I read somewhere that at that time period the huns were actually way more respectful to women than many other cultures were. Idk how true it is or not since I just read it somewhere online but it would make sense if that was the case

So yeah....Cary Elwes is a worse Robin Hood in terms of speech. ;)
As a brit- I will still make fun of the American accent and spellings even tho they technically are the first
the same exact thing happened with brits and americans using feet and miles. britain changed decades ago and now it would be immensely too expensive to change to the metric system in america lol

The villan also isn't really the hun. Yes he is the bad guy, but he isn't her main struggle. Mulans real villan is her struggle with society and honor, and her overcoming them not with superpowers or some lucky break. She has to work for it, and even harder because she is a women.

This is purely semantics, but Shan Yu, whom I almost called Shao Khan, is definitely the villain. He is a menacing figure who directly threatens the main character and supporting cast, with the removal of his presence leading to a drastically different tone. Tell me how much you need.”
This film is an absolute triumph.
The sheer amount of human emotion that the animators put on the faces of these characters rocks me to my core every single time I watch this film. I love this film on a personal, nostalgic adventure but I can confidently say that it 1000000% holds up in my adult eyes 32 years after the release of this absolute masterpiece.

THANK YOU

Yeah he totally forgot to talk about a girl worth fighting for and the village scene right after it
This is a good line up, but my only critic is on how you judged Mulan based off of its musical score and its villain component.
👏 👏 👏
I totally agree with you! 👏🏻
“The villain is much darker than other Disney villains”. Well, apart from Frollo, Chernabog, and the Horned King, of course. (The former two both have musical scores dedicated to them, and they’re still evil to the core.)

Also in Hun culture, woman had the same rights as the men.
Agreed . Mulan is the best, schaffrillas worst list imo because he treats thus list as so objective, but maybe its just because i dont agree with it
@@sportsnerd100 Kinda of ironic how in Both Mulan and Avatar Air Bender the villains show less sexism than the good guys
I would have ranked Mulan WAY higher than he did.
another thing that's cool about that scene that I disagree with schaff about it's that him not having a connection to Mulan make sense because she was just a random girl who became a great warrior

Mulan is my favorite Disney "princess" movie and I'm not open to changing my mind so don't even try
Agreed, the movie is truly gorgeous and all the characters are memorable
But she’s not even a Princess tho, she’s a war hero who has respect from not only the Emperor but all of China, but she’s not royalty, she’s born from a Local Farming Family and the closet she’d be to royalty would be marrying that General lad
Same, even tho she’s not even technically a princess lol
@@wisdommapping9406 I mean, Mulan's dad is a respected warrior even by the asshole counselor man, but Disney treats her like a princess for saving China in the movie.
YES it's definitely up there for me!
A Girl Worth Fighting for is abrutly cut short and is the last musical number in the movie because the reality of war sets in, and for much of the rest of the film songs no longer seem appropriate
The only thing I’m mildly disappointed in this list is how low Mulan is. I don’t blame him, it’s just one of my personal favorites.
I also love Mulan. But then again, the other movies on the list are tough competition.
The list is completely subjective given some objective facts so it’s fine
lil chungus ah yes, let’s all take advice from the prince of all kingdoms “lil chungus”
Jacob Woodson Music wow what a well thought out, respectful comment, nice one
Jacob Woodson Music Mulan is 100% greater than the little mermaid
Gonna say, there is exactly one stand-out character in Pokahontas and that's Ratcliffes butler. This man is a delight every single one of the few times he opens his precious mouth.
His name is Wiggins! I love him, he’s also one of the few not problematic characters haha
Fun fact: the genie was one of the first cases of a role being written specifically for a certain celebrity. Also, I adore the opening for Aladdin involving that creepy guy selling stuff.
2nd fun fact: the genie and the guy from the beginning are actually the same character!
And they ended it with him trying to sell you a lamp
Extra fun fact: they would let Robin Williams do improv and just edit out whatever didn't work and animate around his voice
One of the first cases? Gosh I hope you mean within Disney canon because otherwise that is so wrong.
@@maxmottram8612 that doubles as a fri maker
So his main points of criticism for Mulan are that many parts of the film didn’t follow the generic Disney template. I’d argue most are strengths of the movie which make it stand out from other films as a grounded, personal experience rather than something overly fantastical.
Some of his arguments straight up misinterpreted the movie, i.e the cricket ruining Mulan’s matchmaking. It’s supposed to be a lucky cricket, and the matchmaking being ruined is a catalyst to her becoming the hero of China.
The only point I could agree on is that Mushu is incredibly grating for the majority of his screen time.
I think the movie is spectacular, but I would agree that having her character be part of the reason (it could’ve been started by the cricket) contribute more to her failing the match making ceremony would enhance it just a bit more
Exactly. It's symbolism galore in that Movie.
yeah mushu kills the movie so much imo
>everyone else pissed because you insulted Brave/Pocahontas/insert bad film here
>meanwhile I'm fuming because you called the LEOPARD in Tarzan a "Cheetah"
While I'm fuming about most people in the comments keep calling it a jaguar. It's not.
BB Gunz170 EXACTLY. Even ignoring that it looks nothing like a jaguar... Why would there be a jaguar in AFRICA??
watch some damn Big Cat Diary people ffs
Edit for more info:
Not only does it look nothing like a cheetah, in spot pattern or body shape... more importantly, cheetahs cannot climb trees, because they have doglike paws more suited to running, rather than catlike paws with retractable claws (which are ideal for climbing). Also, a cheetah would NEVER go after a gorilla... cheetahs are small, and always go after small prey like gazelles.
Lions can't really climb well either, but for a different reason - they have the right paw structure, but they're simply too heavy/big to climb once they're adults, generally.
Maplefrost bruh it’s obviously a kangaroo
It’s a lion :)
CLEARLY it's an echidna

In the novel Phoebus saves the goat and leaves Esmeralda to die😭🤡
Thats not Phoebus that leaves with the goat, its a Poet that kinda tell the story.
Phoebus is a total trash in the novel. He just want to smash Esmeralda despite being married since two day.
He let her die because he doesnt want to be discredited.

I always disliked how they did the "both sides are wrong!!!!" thing with pocahontas (disclaimer, I'm not native american)
were the native americans always these perfect, spiritual, and kind people? no, native americans are human too, there are certainly native americans that did shitty things, as with every single group of people on the entire planet. but the anglo-powhatan wars weren't really this morally grey issue like pocahontas the movie portrays it as. the british settlers completly took advantage of the native americans initial kindness and welcoming. what the british did to them is unacceptable. the native americans were right to defend themselves and react the way they did, unlike the movie which seems to make a mockery of this tragic story. it implies that the native americans shouldn't have fought back and that the solution was just love and acceptance. even tho in reality the only love in the actual story of the real pocahontas (she was actually known as matoaka, and born as amonute. pocahontas was just a nickname) was the fake love of john rolfe and the innocent native american woman he kidnapped from her people, her father, and the fellow native american husband that she already had
again, native americans arent infallible, but the anglo-powhatan wars had a very clear villian

8 year old me was more interested in the songs and Beasts transformation with beauty and the beast. However just last year when I rewatched beauty and the beast I could finally understand and see how their love blossomed. Hades: "You are correct sir!"
And
Zeus (taking to Hermes): "GOOOO GOOOO!"

I think this might be better...:
Hades: I can't believe this guy! I throw everything I've got at him, and it doesn't even...

Hades: What... are...

Now I wonder if people in Asian countries find the Zuko honor jokes offensive.
Honestly I loved the ending and the message, it was different, I enjoyed it and I never really cared about the villain; everybody just paid attention to Mulans mental state
“A few things”
U bring up really good points, I agree with it all
wait do people jump on the mulan score? that shits fire, maybe it’s because it reminds me heavily of okami for obvious reasons and that’s one of the best games ever made but the score was so good
I recently saw Beauty and the Beast as a play, it was the first play I've been to and even though I never watched the movie, the play was just so beautiful, its such a joyful story and the tale as old as time song makes me feel like I'm in love
