    love the new hair!!!
    aw im sorry you didn't LOVE renegades but i'm happy it was still enjoyable to you! i do agree there are certain tropes that can be found in a lot of ya, and for that reason i think it can definitely be a good comfort read :) i always feel you do a great job at discussing positives and negatives!
    ive been interested in furyborn but i feel similar to the way you felt about starting renegades; im not sure if i want to commit to something so big when im not sure ill love it!
    "dope squad" omggggg
    im not a big fan of poetry but i totally understand why so many people are drawn to rupi kapur.
    oh god i hate poetry that just feels like a statement ITS THE WORSTTTT
    (pls read your bad poetry)

    • @withcindy
      @withcindy  6 років тому +17

      i wish i enjoyed renegades as much as you! i think i'm still willing to read archenemies, maybe the next time i get on a long plane ride. totally agree about poems that are just statements. i think they're difficult to pull off because if your poem is going to be only one line or one sentence, it needs to be TRULY impactful, but the impact is lessened if every other poem is also similar statements. haha yes i will definitely read my bad poetry for a video at some point!!

    “she never sleeps and she can put others to sleep with her touch.
    um, honestly, same”
    😂
    I have read Snotgirl and the art is what made me love it. I didn’t like the main character, either. she is everything I don’t like in a person (personality wise) I read the second volume and I guess people are right...? Idk. but for someone who now doesn’t like it as much, I still have two copies of the 1st volume.... yikes.
    I’m going to read Renegades (well, listen to) because Emma from Emmmabooks talks about it ALLL the time.
    & I’m going to take your word for Furyborn. I was fighting with myself if I wanted to read it or not. guess it’s a not.
    glad to have you back, purple yam! 💜

    • @withcindy
      @withcindy  6 років тому +9

      yea i wish i could like renegades as much as emma does! i do like fun adventure stories with ensemble casts but this one didn't resonate with me as much. i still might read the sequel the next time im on a long plane ride tho!

      LOVE hearing your thoughts on the Sun and Her Flowers
      I adored Milk and Honey and that one just didn't compare- however, like you I found the section reflecting on her mother ridiculously beautiful and I think that is where she really shines. But omg there were so many more random almost non poems (like that lily pad one LOL) spread-out that it really took away from the collection. Anywho, another great video :)

    • @withcindy
      @withcindy  6 років тому +20

      i am what i yam. yea i heard milk and honey is better so i might try that one out next time i wanna pick up poetry again. wtf was that lily pad one tho?! the rooting section was the best bc there's so much material you can write about immigration and family history; if she devoted a whole book to it i think it would've been stronger.

      I'm answering this after two years, but why not...
      Maybe "lily pad" in Hindi has some poetic meaning. In Portuguese (my native language), it's called "vitória régia", which in English would be "royal victory".
      I think she writes in English, but maybe this one was inspired by Hindi concepts.

    the thing about Renegades is that i had the same opinion of it at first, i enjoyed it but i thought it was kind of predictable and the tropes were often used (but i am a basic bitch and love cliches but whatever) and i was kind of in the same boat for the second one but the third book is what really made the series for me. the third had me blown away because i just wasn’t expecting so much stuff and it was more unpredictable than the last books. it was amazing and what made me really end up loving the series

    I want to read Snot Girl so bad but I'd like to get it from a library. At the bookstore, I can never ever find the first volume. Sorry Renegades was not amazing. It's great to hear your perspective on Furyborn, I was waiting for your wrap up to hear your thoughts. Right now, the people who've read it are very divided. You either LOVE or HATE it. I'm excited about the timelines, but I don't know how I'll end up feeling. I agree about The Sun and Her Flowers. Modern Poetry is usually not for me. I GET YOU.

    FINALLY SOMEONE WHO FEELS THE SAME AS I DO ABOUT SNOTGIRL. at least on booktube. my bf brought me his copy to see if i’d like it, i told him i thought it was all over the place and i didnt rly enjoy it apart from the art, he said “same”, and now i can’t get him to take it back. it’s sitting under my desk, haunting me alongside a book of poems i wrote in high school which are all very cringey. bless your whole soul for validating mine LOL
    “i long to be a lily pad” is so oddly placed when it’s beside other beautiful poems, but it’s also such a 4am mood. like damn, yeah, ur right, take me away from this flesh prison, i wanna be a lily pad

    😂😂😂. When you were reading the synopsis for Snotgirl, my mind went with it and filled in the blanks. “A graphic novel about a fashion lover but she has a secret...” and I completed it “she’s a lesbian who releases a shit ton of snot every time she meets a gorgeous girl on shoot which is practically all the time because of her job and so she becomes snotgirl and she has to find the fortitude to fight through the snot and the grossed out reactions of potential lovers to find her one true love, a girl who is known as sneezester” (and that folks is the plot of the second book) 😏😏. I know. I know. My mind!!! 🤣🤣🤣. I’m a mess!

    I'm glad you enjoyed your trip! That audiobook experience sounds amazing -- it's so rewarding to see someone who isn't much of a reader find a book they love, and getting to listen to the book right along side them sounds so fun!
    I really enjoyed Renegades, but I totally agree with you about it being kind of generic! Just a right book right time situation I think. It really is a shameless comfort read -- it's not that deep lol but I had a fun time reading it. It mostly just gave me some hard-core Sky High vibes, and I was trash for that movie so I was all about the cheese and superhero tropes in Renegades haha. I've heard a lot of conflicting thoughts about Furyborn! I always worry about books with so much hype, especially fantasies, because they so often miss the mark and fall way short of the hype. And LOL girl we've all gone through our cringey poetry phases, I feel you XD

      yea i loved listening to the audiobook with my friend so i could see all his reactions live!! yea renegades is a comfort read which is OK, i've LOVED plenty of books that weren't deep or special. totally get what u mean that it gives sky high vibes. it's very cheesy but it can be enjoyable the way that christmas special movies are.

    I agree that Furyborn was pretty slow at times. I usually love books with dual POVs and alternating timelines but I didn't like how it was executed in the book. It made the story feel underwhelming to me.

    Ah, Comic Sans- the true font for the trashy soul. Also, we stan the hair, girl. We stan it forever.
    All jokes aside though, I totally get what you mean about fantasy characters usually not being self-made as such. What you said reminded me of this book I read a while ago called Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson. The novel is about a boy who wants to be a magician (they're chalk-wielding magicians who use math and geometry to defeat evil, and honestly, my engineer soul died of happiness at that) but he isn't. He's still so interested that he keeps studying it theoretically and he becomes better than most of his peers who ARE powerful. I think you might really enjoy the book (and the upcoming series)! Give it a try if you haven't already! Great video as always! :)

    It was such a long time since I've watched one of your video and OMG I missed you haha interesting point of views! I think you're the first person saying that Renegates and Furyborn were just not that great. Cannot wait to hear your poems haha Hope you're good!

    Furyborn is infamous within my friend for...
    *Chapter 41...*
    Let's just say things got steamy. Coincidentally, there was another steamy scene, also at you guessed it-- Chapter 41.

    I feel like your taste in books is very similar to mine (like cough, we're Six of Crows trash), so I hope you end up reading the Bartimaeus trilogy someday. It's similarly action-packed but seriously so hilarious that I think it'll end up really appealing to your sense of humor. Not to mention, it's got one of the best YA finales I've read in my entire life (I'll fight tooth and nail anyone who says otherwise), and I can personally guarantee it'll make you cry.
    Btw, YES to your purple hair! It matches your skin tone, and it looks very nice on you. :)

    Tooootally agree about Furyborn. The only character I even gave two shits about was Simon but even so his attitude to the MC (can't even remember her name or any other characters) seems to shift so suddenly it's hard to stay on board.

      readwithcindy oh really? Who told you that? Do they have a review? I’m curious what they have to say, I myself enjoyed it but I have not heard anything about it on BookTube from the perspective of someone in the LBGTQ+ community.

      I think her opinion is in the minority but she reads books very critically (she couldn't finish six of crows which i LOVE lol) - her channel is Anna Reads if u wanna check her out! she made a rant review about the gentleman's guide

    i know i'm super late but like you should definitely try the rest of the renegades series! i felt the same you did at the first book, but it takes such a turn that it makes it worthwhile at the end. just a suggestion, sending much love! love your channel!

    And here I thought I was the only one who wrote bad angsty poetry back in high school and college I still have the old composition books to prove it lol. I think you are the only person I've heard who did not like snotgirl. Furyborn has been on my list to read since it came out someone in the comments mention that book is just like a queen of the tearling just with elements side note I actually like Queen of the tearling so I'm still going to give this book read. Still on the fence about Renegades I don't see myself reading it no time soon especially since I didn't like heartless. I think purple looks great on you but then again I always think you look fabulous! So glad that you had a safe and fun trip and we're glad to see you back on booktube! 💜💜💜

    • @withcindy
      @withcindy  6 років тому +1

      thank you! i also did not enjoy heartless. it's a shame that marissa meyer hasn't written other books that i've LOVED yet after lunar chronicles. i say give furyborn a shot and see if you like it! omg i would love to read your poetry lol it's always fun to look back on that stuff

    I have "The Sun and Her Flowers" on my TBR for this month. I can see where you are coming from and I think that the cool thing about poetry is that much of what we get out of when we read it is what we bring to it in the first place. That is what makes art in general so personal. I still plan on reading it, but now I am really curious what I will get out of since I was never a young girl.

    • @withcindy
      @withcindy  6 років тому

      i'd love to hear ur POV once u read it! i def think the main audience is for young girls but i do think many other people could relate to it. it's just for me i no longer relate to it because my life has changed a lot compared to where i was 5 years ago.

    I absolutely agree with you about Furyborn. I was hoping it would be one of the knockouts based on the concept. I was very underwhelmed and I believe the two main characters were "Strong Female Characters," in all the wrong ways.
    I could compare mountain climbing with a steep drop off, to trying to finish it. I kept going and going no matter how hard it was to read. Then when I got to the climax, it fell BAD.
    Also love the sass and the satire ❤

    • @withcindy
      @withcindy  6 років тому +1

      HAHAHA i love ur analogy about mountain climbing to finishing this book. i was on a plane ride so i had no choice but to finish it. otherwise it would have been very very slow for me to get through it

    Honestly I agree with your comments on Snotgirl. I’m still finishing it. Renegades was on my TBR but idk when I’ll actually get to it. I honestly just don’t have time to read mediocre or underwhelming stories. However the story sounds interesting so I will read it eventually
    Claire is a genius in my opinion and I love her concepts. Plus you’re right like she writes suuuuuch great sex scenes. I heard that Sawkill Girls was much better than Furyborn. Multiple ppl have said that!
