    The Inquisitor's blade is unique design in the world of lightsabers, but is it more gimmicky than functional? We take a look at this maligned design and explain why it was one of the worst blades you could use.

    The Inquisitor's lightsabers are just like them. They're Flashy and intimidating, but not actually a threat to a skilled opponent. The whole point of the Inquisitors is to find and kill escaped Jedi, but they only have the most basic training of the dark side powers and lightsaber combat. I'd go so far as to say that their sabers are literally crutch weapons. They use them to compensate for their lack of skill by being scary and overwhelming for younglings and padawans that escaped Order 66. Against a skilled padawan or a knight, they get beaten quite easily. But that's the point. Any Jedi that can kill an Inquisitor is an opponent who's worth Darth Vader's time. So much like their sabers, they're cheap and disposable.

      The only good thing about it is that it's new. If you've ever done fencing or kendo or HEMA and someone does something weird, it can actually put you a little off balance. Now, if you're very experienced it won't matter, but if you're a beginner then someone doing something that's strange can let them get a hit on you.
      If you're using double or dual blades then you actually have LESS range than a one handed or two handed style with a single blade. Double bladed is actually a really defensive style and dual blades is a very difficult style too.
      Just basically, this ain't for beginners.

    I had always assumed that the spinning blade was useful for corralling hunted Jedi that, by the time we see them for the first time in Rebels, are usually former Padawans. Back them into a corner, capture them, and then interrogate them.
    Ultimately, I think the spinning aspect is like a musket versus a longbow. It's less effective than the old way, but you don't need to train a lifetime to do it. Inquisitors are expendable, so anyone who isn't overpowered by them just gets to meet the greatest human podracer of all time, so that's fun for them.

      Longbows were cheap, and getting people who knew them was easy because they had the ingenious idea of making archery with a longbow the most popular big boy sport that eveyone wanted to do at the timr

      The problem with the longbow is you needed to be really strong and skilled to use them. Anyone can load a musket not everyone can draw a bow with 150-200 lb draw weight and fire repeatedly. Ironically despite what they show in Hollywood the most muscular warriors would have been long bowmen.

      Only in legends did Palpatine purposely try to hinder Vader & his underlings. Canon says Palpatine wanted an apprentice who could surpass him and he spared no expense rebuilding Vader to be as powerful as possible. He even taunted Vader after his meeting with the Grand Inquisitor; telling him to be mindful that if any of them showed the strength to defeat him, Vader would be promptly replaced.

    • @BungieStudios
      @BungieStudios 2 роки тому +50

      @@thewarner2139 Nah. There are two points to this. They're sorta contradictory but that's on purpose. It's an intentional character flaw for the Emperor.
      First - Sidious is sadistic and self serving. Power, knowledge, glory, and immortality only for himself. He teases the possibility of ascendency but doesn't consciously desire that. Second - His conscious desires don't matter. As grand as Sidious thinks himself, he is a puppet of the Dark Side of the Force. The Sith think they bend the Dark Side of Force to their own will. The irony is that the Dark Side let's them think this. It uses Dark Siders and the Sith to serve itself. The Dark Side seeks a stronger and stronger servant to enact its will. Like the urge to reproduce, Sidious is subconsciously motivated to find someone that can replace him. It's a type of suicidal ideation.
      Furthermore, canon makes a point to say that Sidious was paranoid of the Force, Lightside or as a whole, taking retribution against him (Midichlorian manipulation). Thrawn is puzzled as to why the Emperor wants to turtle inside of a planet killing armored fortress instead of building more effective ships; Why his military decisions are skewed towards protecting himself at the detriment of Galactic security. Thrawn doesn't know but the reader is supposed to.
      Lastly, the Force's plan to defeat Sidious through Anakin wouldn't work if Sidious actually believed Vader could replace him. His arrogance blinded him. He thought he broke Anakin. He thought he stopped the Force's plan and corrupted it to serve himself instead. He thought the Rebel fleet and troops on Endor were the Force's pitiful attempt at vengeance. He thought his planet destroyer, best forces, and Sith powers could save him. The Force humiliated him instead. Made him believe he was invincible. Put Anakin right by his side like a double agent. Then used Luke as a catalyst to bring Anakin back to the Light. The Dark Lord of the Sith was killed by a father's love for his son. Anakin's selfless parental need to protect his child. The most anti-Sith act imaginable.

    I really hate the spinning lightsabers. Having played with bicycle wheels and gyroscopes, I know how difficult it is to control a spinning object. They like to stay in the same relative space and position you left them, and when you force them to move, they resist you and can go rolling off in an unexpected direction.
    I expected the Grand Inquisitor to cut his own legs off the first time I saw the spin action.

Look at the attack on the arena in geonosis, according to canon numbers, 215 jedi were sent there. Rushing in head-on, only 28 survived. Given such massive casualty numbers against a primarily droid and geonosian infantry (dooku did not participate in that fight) and jango only killed a few of those jedi, it seems with the exception of kenobi and jedi, most of the stragglers were probably not as adept fighters as them to begin with.

      My theory behind the “helicopter mode” is that lightsabers themselves are not actually generating any lift, and the inquisitors are using the Force to lift the sabers while they’re holding onto it. In other words, if a non-Force sensitive we’re to try to use the “helicopter mode,” they’d just plummet to their death.
      Kyber crystals already channel the Force in some way, so maybe the spinning function spreads out that energy like a sail, giving the inquisitors something more to “latch onto.” It’s the equivalent of using a crutch when compared to actually lifting yourself like we’ve seen more powerful Jedi do. It makes sense, in a way, since it would keep the inquisitors from developing their powers any more than necessary. When the 8th Brother lost his “crutch,” he wasn’t skilled enough to even slow his descent to save himself. Which is crazy since that would likely have been a skill even Ezra could do at that time.

It allows the inquisitors who had the least Jedi training to compensate for their lack skill while making the more experienced member's force skills atrophy thus making both groups less of a threat to Palpatine & Vader. Why must Darksiders be so paranoid and distrustful, they could do with a few trust exercises and escape room exercises. We just have to temporarily remove lightsabers and make sure the escape rooms have only mutual win scenarios and no space large enough to hide a Yoda size body or larger.

Sith are self destructive by nature,and the times they actually worked like the jedi order they were massively weaker. Which is why the rule of 2 exists,it baisically weaponizes this lust of power,the master would have all the power and the apprentice would crave it and once the latter had all the knowledge he needed,if he was strong enough,he would kill his master,and the cycle would continue. I think it is to increase the inquisitors ability to deal with less skilled Jedi survivors and the people aiding them. It takes Kanan a bit of luck and time to learn how to deal with them before he beats the grand inquisitor. The inquisitors were probably the first level anti-Jedi response then the more skilled inquisitors like the grand inquisitor or a group would deal with the Jedi and if they survived that then Darth Vader is sent out. The inquisitors are probably nothing more than disposable tools to hunt down Jedi survivors who are alive through luck not skill and to interrogate people for leads, this would cut down on Vaders and other more valuable assets required missions. Working against relatively unskilled opponents the spin trick is probably enough to catch an enemy of guard and kill them but anyone good enough of a duellist to deal with it was Vaders job not the inquisitors anyway so it doesn't matter that in that level of fight it is a liability not an advantage.

However until then, you have pretty much 99% of the time, even against someone like Vader, a window to capitalize in that advantage and find victory. Sometimes it isn't just about simple resistance too. Cortosis won't deflect a parried saber, it will temporarily shut it down. Of course the more skilled Jedi have little trouble dealing with them as the inquisitors aren't meant to hunt down the pros. Vader is. Quick two part personal theory as to why the hilts were specifically designed NOT to be lightsaber resistant. First, Palpatine is repeatedly on record with his utter disdain for lightsabers as he views them as more of a hindrance to the Dark Side rather than a positive addition. Second, tied to his disdain for lightsabers as opposed to growing your personal power beyond the reliance on them it would make sense NOT to reinforce them despite the increased target they provide enemies because it would literally force the Inquisitors to get better to offset that added weakness rather than just relying on the ring as a way to intercept incoming strikes.

    Edit: Also to answer your last question, I definitely think there is at least one less practical saber than this and that is the Saber Gun. Sure it's a powerful blast but if you don't hit or it gets deflected then you loose literally every defense you have after just four shots since the gun melts the saber hilt used for the ammunition. There is a rule in knife fighting "don't throw your blade you'll never get it back." While this isn't literally throwing your blade as a focrewielder could just summon their blade back... I believe it is the equivalent because now your once again locked in a melee battle and you have disposed of your only weapon.

    The Inquisitor's Lightsabers are a violation of the mechanics themselves. And only work because the original logical mechanics of Lightsabers were discarded by Disney. The blade actually travels somewhat through the hilt from the focusing crystal through the focusing lens and terminates thanks to the magnetic stabilizing ring. If a lightsaber's components were to shift, causing a misalignment, the saber would either explode or turn off. But because Disney doesn't care about these dynamics and haven come up with suitable mechanics that makes sense, they created the helicopter hilt. One that no matter how fast you spin it, would still not create lift because the blade is pure energy and therefore WEIGHTLESS. This is the real reason why the Inquisitor Lightsaber Hilts are such a terrible design. Because they make absolutely no sense.

They're actually such a downgrade from their prototype that they're nearly useless. However the Empire was obsessed with Intimidation. So they wanted huge fleets of the things.
    This is the problem when you're trying to look as powerful as you can and you don't put in the time, effort or energy to actually BE powerful. The Empire never had the control, manpower or tactics to actually take command of it's territory which is understandable as The Republic was too big and too poorly run. The advantage of a normal Tonfa is that you’ll deliver harder blows when you swing or spin it (it’s a good trick). You couldn’t spin it horizontally anymore without Darth Mauling yourself by the long plasma beam (so no more cool Lightsaber spins).
    And you could say goodbye to your elbows no matter which way you strike, spin, swing or block.
    Blocking incoming strikes require you to hold the longer end of the Tonfa against your forearms, or if you hold it away from your arm you’ll break your elbow. Same logic when you get K.O if you get OPEN-jaw punched.

    It really is just a niche weapon I would love to see a lightsaber incorporate an effective D or Knuckle guard using Cortosis, Beskarr, or plasma as many lightsabers' only weakness is that they do not adequately protect the hands and I know that Jedi and sith reflexes make it less of a requirement (I to am a Star Wars fan).

    As much as a good amount of people dislike this saber, I like it.
    While it might have terrible design flaws, they're pretty much fixable. Just make the guards out of a lightsaber resistant material of your choosing, fix the internals so it doesn't overheat, and personally, my favorite, making it so that you can actually take it apart into two sabers like a splitsaber from fallen order. Sure, the mechanics to do that might make it a nightmare, but if you know what you're doing when you make it, this easily has the potential to become a very deadly and efficient saber to wield.

  • @mizu7662
    @mizu7662 Рік тому +7

    The design makes sense when you consider they basically existed to fight scrub jedi that weren't worth Vader's time and that spinning blade trick is going to throw scrub jedi really heavily off their game. Sure someone of actual skill is going to be in more danger of distracting themselves laughing their ass off at the gimmick, but inquisitors aren't supposed to be fighting them anyway. The ridiculous spinning lightsabers are basically a testament to the contempt Palpatine feels for these 2nd and 3rd rate losers he has doing busy work Vader is too important to waste on.

    Yeah, they're deffinatly the worst. But old jedi using protosabers with the cord hanging loose instead of safely up their sleeve is a close 2nd for me. Followed by the Kylo crossguard of uselessness.

    • @jasonsomers8224
      @jasonsomers8224 2 роки тому +2

      The crossguard is useful. Even if you couldn't use it defensively, it would be a deadly tool if he could get his opponent in the bind, something that happens a lot in lightsaber duels.

    • @olinseats4003
      @olinseats4003 2 роки тому

      the in-cannon reason for the crossguard on his saber is to vent unstable plasma to make the saber safe to use, since Kylo''s saber uses a cracked crystal. Though the design itself is much older. I'm not sure if it represents a less refined design that couldn't quite manage a fully efficient superconducting loop, or if the old design had a much different use and kylo just modified it to solve his energy regulation problem.

  • @biggsdarklighter0473

    They cannot reform Beskar into a proper guard, since they ain´t got the mandalorian blacksmiths for that. And learning how to work a new material takes time and resources. I agree however that there are multiple shortsights with the saber, including that their are diffrent lightsaber-resistant materials in the galaxy. Cortosis is incredibly dense and brittle, Ultrachrome evaporates by multiple contacts, it´s still used for shields by the Haruun Kal people. Bones are way to difficult to work. Phryk would seem ideal, but it was prominently handled by robotic individuals or droids, so maybe it´s quite heavy, too. We don't know enough about Neuranium, though.

As Jack O'Niell said, *holding up the staff weapon* "This is a weapon of terror! It is meant to intimidate your enemy! *holds up P90* This is a weapon of war! It is meant to kill your enemy!"

    I think that the flaws in the design is definitely intentional. Not only would it catch unprepared Jedi off-guard, potentially costing them their life, but, as you said, it also would've made it much harder for the Inquisitors to rise up 'n' try to take the Empire for themselves.

  • @scrawnyclownsnatch9656

    my favorite saber design has alwase been a curved single blade design. as "cool" as the dual blade style and the crossguard are practical, I just think the curved design maximizes the effectiveness of what the user has. True, it does have the downside of being less effective at blocking blaster bolts, but if a user is skilled enough, they can make up for this.

    • @God_abandoned_us_all
      @God_abandoned_us_all Рік тому

      curved design gives a lot of advantage in lightsaber combat, since the 99% uses normal angled lightsabers. But curved ones are much less predictable which is very beneficial as long as opponent won't get used to it, but it wouldn't probably happen

    They still have yet to explain how the spinning saber works. Also a fun fact is that the spinning saber came from a prequel toy. Namely General Gervious' spinning lightsaber toy. I can across one at a Goodwill and at first thought it was a Rebels variant of Inquisitor's saber meant for a light-side force user. Nope to my surprise when looking it up it came from the Revenge of the Sith toy line lol.

They werent as well trained and needed this advantage to do the things Jedi and Sith lords can do.

    Same old thing. the Light saber blade is weightless, so when you see someone swinging it two-handed like a metal blade sword, they become easy targets for those who use Form-2 like Count Doku who holds the weapon like a foil/rapier one handed, or dual wields two blades. Holding the hilt with two hands limits both reach and movement. A hilt with two blades is worse.

    I think the reason why the weapons of the Inquisitors are designed like this is because Darth Sidious and Darth Vader do not wanted them to have weapons that can help them in overthrowing them easier. So yes, I think this is correct. At the end of the day, it seemed to me that Palpatine knows that the Rule of Two will only work in the shadow and that he will needed an army of Dark Side users to fight the Jedi like during the time when the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire coexisted with one another.

    This lightsaber could be vicious if you use it like a flying buzzsaw. Use the Force to lift it and just fly it around while using the spinning mode. Not sure why any Inquisitor hasn't thought of this, considering using the Force to lift things is literally the first Force ability most learn.

    I see a lot of people saying that this saber is just like them, flashy and scary but not actually any threat. And that's true, it really is! But one thing I see less is HOW it causes fear. Not only because seeing this wall of Plasma is very intimidating...but because of one of the empires favorites, the Confederacy. Specifically, this very nicely mimicked General Grievous' use of his lightsabers, using his mechanical hands to spin the man blades into a wall of Plasma and slowly approach the opponent, a fear that not only looks scary but also minicks a REAL threat, the well known Jedi Killer himself, which could strike extra fear into any Jedi who remember or even have seen Grievous in action
