- This video was done to support my class which met on Location in Bellagio, Bergamo, and Venice Italy over 2 weeks in September . In this small series “Problems and Solutions” I present paintings done based on sketches or paintings done in the field. I will address common problems the watercolorist faces while working in Plein Air . Some of these are - what makes a good subject, how to work with shadows and changing light, architecture, simplifying complexity, and more...
In each video I will address some of the challenges with working on site as well a specific challenges in design and watercolor technique. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working under an open sky that we did.
In this video I demonstrate some ways to make a complex interior more manageable, some working thoughts on perspective for artists and working with people on Location...
You can see some more demos of my Interiors on UA-cam here

Love how you explain things! Thanks for sharing.
Love the step by step thought process that you describe. I am glad to hear you talk about the library of figures that you have in your head from all your education, practice, and experience. Good emphasis. Thank you very much.
Another great tutorial. Thanks Gary!

Gary, Your explainations. Techniques so resonate with me. No rulers, not exact - representational. Love this. I am following you and may finally have time to paint along.... I have a few interiors that I want to do. I can see them in my head. You will show me how to execute them!!! Thank you!

Wonderful study. Thank you very much.
amazing thanks for sharing.
I want to thank you for this complete and helpful lesson. Beautiful painting. I tend to underestimate the power of the dry brush among the wet strokes and you are showing it in your work.
It is gift for me,look the sky more blue, smells air is sweet, thank you.Master painter’s way follow what’s fell, what you see form your eyes, like this interior painting ask for lights and darks to present the contrast to make drama make sensational painting. I like this video for value scratch and colours.
It is outstanding how your painting creates such intimacy and warmth compared to the reference photograph. Really beautiful and learnt so much, thank you!

Beautiful works. What are the sort and brand of brushes with red line, please?
“One point perspective” snoozer. I prefer to wing it. 🤓
I'd love to see your pallet...
Thx for the request - I am Working on showing more through different camera angles in future videos
is the first colour neutral tint?
Love watching you work. Your voice is very confident and reassuring. I have to do more studies before I do a final version. One thing about your final version that seems out of place is the the line work you did on the floor. It does not seem to fit the perspective. They seem to go in the wrong direction. It was not that way in your black and white study. .????
