Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лис 2019
- This video was done to demonstrate some problems and solutions to the challenges in painting with watercolor. Today’s video show some ways to
1 - Work with a complicated shadow pattern
2 - Create luminosity in these shadows
3 - Give the shadows a transparency
The scene is taken from the Southend in Boston on a sunny day. In each video I will address some of the challenges with working on site as well a specific challenges in design and watercolor technique. Along the way I hope you find some challenges as well as some knowledge you can use in your watercolor painting.

Great tip to do shadows before details. Thanks for another great demo.
You prolly dont care but does any of you know a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid lost my account password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Kamryn Tony instablaster ;)
@Benjamin Anders thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Benjamin Anders It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out!
@Kamryn Tony Happy to help xD
Wow, that was some process. It was interesting to see how the windows were brought out from a flat backgroumd to become 3-D shapes coming forward towards the viewer.
Love your attention to shadows and seeing exactly how you arrive to such beautiful shadows. Beautiful!
Super super, I learn so much from your demos. Truly can’t thank you enough!
Love the green door. Says Boston to me. Thanks for the great tips.
I feel that this is one of your best paintings, the shadow work against that blue door, nice.
Very helpful as always Gary. Thanks a lot for sharing!
I have really enjoyed your tutorials and your work. But if I had to chose, this painting would be my favorite. Thanks for sharing your work and process with us.
I have been struggling with depicting shadows. This is a wonderful lesson and very helpful. Beautiful painting. Thank you.
You are amazing. I have so many inspirations from your work recently
Amazing lesson. Magical how it came to life as if dried. Thank you for the PDF as well. Can’t get over how much work you pack into each lesson, but I sure appreciate it!
Excellent tutorial and very clear in your presentation of it. Thank you!
Great demo! Thank you
Thank you for this demonstration. I recently travelled to Brooklyn where I photographed many scenes including brownstones. Now I have an idea how to paint these. I’m so excited to begin! WOW lovely.
It’s a great subject - love painting NYC
This video is mesmerizing The shadows are amazing--they still elude me but I will keep trying
Chapeau!!!!!
Your picture really relaxes the mind
Wow wonderful painting and great
Beatiful painting shaw the brown stone building with dapple of shadow pattern in spontaneous quality.your narrative is big helps ,I stand and hold back of brush when i painting. Here is no snow, but has 4 season in one day.thank for your video.
Great as always Gary! : )
Very interesting and very helpful. Yous explain calmly, clearly and simply which makes it easy to understand. Thank you.
Thank you. I really appreciate your teaching videos in watercolour. You explain clearly many effects that watercolour artists achieve which, so far, have been a mystery to me.
Joan,
Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your experiences with my videos. I’m glad I can demystify some aspects of watercolor though clearly ...there are more ahead ;)
This is outstanding work Gary. Love this one. Great teaching on how to make shadows appear transparent.
Thanks Ron I appreciate the kind words.
Amazing!!! I love your talent!
Thank you for sharing! I am learning a lot, even though I have painted, with watercolors, for over 20 years!
I have a fixation on windows and doors, so I absolutely love this! I have some photos that are going to get on paper soon, thanks to you.
Wonderful painting, you've given me the light I needed around this complex subject, I've always observed light very well and I would say I'm good at drawing and a little bit with painting but sometimes understanding light and shades it's not the same than being able to reproduce them specially with such an organic touch, in my case I always felt my way to draw shadows looked a little off and forced, but now that I see your work it's basically because I tend to paint a big part of them, after I had added most of the details, watching all your videos shows me how how wrong it's the way I was approaching in it. Thanks a lot for your awesome works and videos.
Very helpful!
This is really beautiful with all that contrast and luminosity, and quite an eye-opener for tackling a subject I, as a relative beginner find very difficult. Food for thought, thanks Gary :-)
Amazing demonstration. I love to watch those shadows come to life but I have to admit my stomach lurched when you applied that first dark wash over the under painting!
good job Gary

This was probably one if my favorite lessons or tutorials from you. I notice that shadows move quite fast too and I don't like having them be the first thing painted. I know you were working fast but I couldn't help to think what effect a darker underpainting would have tonally and it's probably because I love to paint with bright colors. Recently I was in NY with all the brownstones and usually they are made or painted to distinguish them. Thank you. Enjoyed the spraying of paint and what other media could do that?🤗
@6:28 I thought to myself "That's it, he ruined it". Its amazing how much intensity is lost when the paper dries.
i think this is the time i usually leave my painting unfinished.. cuz i feel i have ruined it
Hi Gary.would you consider doing a still life floral motif using the landscape method where you paint against the light( cool over warm) ? I'd especially like to see how you would do the foliage shadows that show that activity that is so soothing but yet lively. Thank you for your generous sharing.
Merci from Avignon

Hi Gary, great job as usual! Do you get a clear vision in your head of what this will look like or is it a process of discovery as you go?
it varies Tina - not always - I do paint more confidently when I have a clear vision. I can reach to that by sketching, doing studies...
Could you make a video about how to make those super cute splashes, please?? Thank you!!
Cai - I will try to remember to show that technique in detail at some point thx
Wow
Very skillfully done .
So assured, so loose and free..................
and then those wonderful abstract near-calligraphic marks, long straight lines and admirable splatters.
Pure joy!
My only doubt -in fact more of a question- would be: why paint this particular motif, What's your personal connection with it ...would you call it strong/not strong.
Due respect ! (I know this is the result of lots of work and prolonged training )
Congrats and keep up the good work
😎
Thank you Rebecca - I’m looking for a publicist;)
I subscribed to your channel number
I'm here to celebrate you.
We pray for development
what paper do you use.....cold press...140?
At the moment I use only rough -140 - but vary between arches and Saunders....reason....drybrush
@@GaryTuckerArtist i'm trying hot press and but sure if i like it...prefer arches rough....it like paper canvass. it grips the paint from the brush in stead of sliding...larger projects i prefer 300 lb
Is Gary the poor mans Peter Sheeler?
