  • This video was done after a week of plein air painting with watercolor in New York City. It is part of a series of videos featuring Central Park, Bryant Park, Times Square, and Dumbo park at the Brooklyn Bridge. The workshop lasted six days and each day was a new adventure . In this video I describe some of the challenges in working on location, as well as some of the strategies to overcome those challenges. In particular selecting a motive, giving your self a title from the beginning, designing around a center of interest, how to work with changing conditions and the many distractions that can present themselves.
In each video I will address some of the challenges with each motive and ways to meet those challenges. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working in the city of New York under an open sky that we did.

Your "people" around the tables are very convincing. I'm learning to draw them in pencil, later with watercolor. Proper proportions are essential!😊

Thanks Gary. Have had to give up oils recently and was and am still very upset and sad. It had become too toxic and was affecting my health. Watching you is giving me hope as I once painted in watercolour so am trying to get my courage back. Thank you for your wonderful work and support.

Nice job! The red awnings remind me a little of Alvaro's paintings somehow, thanks for posting.

I'm doing quite a lot of plein air at the moment, and I'm struggling with many of the things you mentionned, but still I like it a lot and want to continue. This video was most helpful and gave me many ideas on how I can ease the experience a bit. Thanks a lot for sharing this and greetings from France (I loved how you pronouced the name of the cafe by the way).

Wonderful to watch your painting and explanation as you paint! What is the name of the white you used against the warm colors?

Do you think it is possible to upload your videos in 1080? You really do have the best watercolor videos but they're very low definition compared to what cameras can record nowadays. Most people however that don't upload 1080 are limited by internet speed, so I'm not sure if that's your case or not.
