- This video was done to demonstrate some problems and solutions to the challenges in painting Shadows in a busy street scene. I will address common problems the watercolorist faces while working in Plein Air . Some of these are - what makes a good subject, how to work with shadows and changing light, architecture, simplifying complexity, and more...
In each video I will address some of the challenges with working on site as well a specific challenges in design and watercolor technique. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working under an open sky that we did.
In this video I take on the subject of depth and illustrate a few ways to create depth through perspective and through repeated shapes. The scene is complex and unusual - adding to the enjoyment..

Thank you! The way you painted the wheels of the truck! Aha! The tree makes me think about the green c. Maybe its usefull to think of green colors as either a variant of the yellow color or as a v. of the blue color? This class was awesome!

Hi Garry, What are the sable mix brushes you use? They're not on the your list and I haven't found a brush which can be used to scrub on color and still retain a good point, as I've seen you do on many of your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos, they are a great help. Regards, Chris

Love watching your videos but would love to know if you wet your paper before you start. It’s just that the paint seems to glide on easily.

Sir, I've been watching your videos for just over a year and one after another I admire you more and more for your work, your art and your willingness to share here on this very competitive channel. You stand out among many. I've been trying to do some exercises just by copying your paintings from the videos and some look good, others don't, just because I like the results of your art.
If I may, I would like to ask two things about this video: 1) how to get dark and transparent colors, without leaving them muddy and stained; 2) what did you mean by calligraphic painting. I will be honored if you can enlighten me. thanks and a strong hug.
Bon dia from Boston Sonia - by calligraphic I mean the the individual brushstrokes remain and are not polished or blended. I refer to Asian calligraphy done with black in on paper. The first question is trickier. Darker color by its nature is more opaque , so leaving some small pieces of the under painting coming through keeps it feeling lively. The second answer is is to avoid to much layering in the darks. Try to hit the note in the first go! Thx 😊

It is a block of buildings running straight. I did not make much attempt to distinguish them as they were more of a background.
@@GaryTuckerArtist The reason that I ask is my confusion over the value of the shadow cast by the flag and the shadows in the street. Shouldn't the closer shadows be darker?
