Advancing with Watercolor: A Night in Paris

- This is a video done as a supplement to a watercolor class taught by Gary Tucker in Boston. This is the 8th of a series of 8 lessons that will use various scenes of Paris as a motif. The lessons will focus on design , in particular visualizing a center of interest and using this as a means to compose the painting. Also the series returns to the use of graded washes to create light and transition in the paintings
In this lesson I talk about using the various methods I have outlined in previous videos such as using graded Washes, color strategies, thinking in terms of tonal values, and edge control.
The painting was done using yellow ochre, cad red light, ultramarine blue, b sienna and lavender....Holbein juane brilliant is used as an accent color, as well as cad orange red right out of the tube...
Thank you all for your continued support -

Sir, I have been admiring your art for some time. Not sure why someone would give you a thumbs down for this video. Not sure why you or I should care-thumbs up, thumbs down, nonsense. I learn from you with every frame. A neophyte to painting and watercolor, I first found your narrative confusing and contradictory, like the first time a jazz musician told me that music is a language. I simply was too green and could not understand. But like jazz at a young age for me, the more I listen to you and watch and learn: understand how you build a painting, how you allow for the unexpected and choose to either use it or not; the more I learn the language of your art, it all becomes more and more clear and my appreciation for how you turn a white sheet into an expressive visual emotion just illuminates and impresses the hell out of me. Thank you for being so accessible online. You are very much appreciated.
Thank you James for your kind words and for being persistent...your feedback means a lot
Watching this raise my excitement to go back to paint again I want to cry
I hope you will Kiara, transform those tears into beautiful watercolor passages :)
I love your style. It is how I long to paint. Night scenes are my favorite, but so far, they have eluded me. You make it look so easy, but I know how difficult it is. I appreciate your showing the photo. I like seeing how you’ve used it without slavishly copying it. Thank you for this informative demo and for your words of encouragement.
Thank you Moodty for the compliments - full disclosure - you seeing the 3rd rendition :) some subjects take a few practices :)
Gary this is just a stunning piece. It is like magic and it never ceases to amaze me how a few well placed swipes of the brush can become something easily recognizable. Thank you for narrating. 1000 paintings, before I don't feel like I have to think about every thing I do. Okay 700 more to go!
Just wonderful as I love painting lots of light , great painting and class . Thank you Gary .👍🇨🇦
Love this one Gary.
Stunning work!! Colors are amazing, and there's nothing more beautiful than wet reflections!
Excellent work!!! What a pro!
Thank you Gary very helpful. And as always a Beautiful painting.
What a beautiful painting Gary! I love your use of the complimentary colours of orange and blue. Thanks for another great video.
Beautiful, rich color and shine.
This is why I love watercolors, Great video ,Thanks
Brilliant Gary thankyou very much lots of useful information and encouragement. i loved how it came together brave moves
Great work, and a wealth of knowledge.
It's great to see in many of your videos how to apply the method of thinking in layers. It's a technique I still try to master and slowly get there by watching your videos. The hardest part is judging and getting the values right as every additional layer is going darker and darker. I guess that comes with more practice and experience.
You make me want to go to Paris again. It's been too long ago.
Great lesson. Even as a beginner I learn a lot. Hearing you say that after about a *thousand* paintings you will get a feeling for things doesn't scare me because I know it from other art mediums I work with / in.
another great lesson, thanks
Love your style and the way you talk about the painting. Genius ;o) I am going to try this on the journey towards producing the same vibrant works.
Wonderful .....your lighting is magical
Beautiful. I do wish I could see it in real time. Thank you!
Sir, you are rendering a great public service. Bravo!
I follow all your demonstrations and I learn every day.
Are getting better with loose strokes, but it so difficult for me.
I know I'm getting there soon. Thank you again.
Very interesting, and very helpful indeed.
Your courses are wonderful and so generous of you to share them with all of us. You have helped me improve greatly. Thank you
Thx I appreciate your letting me know
Thank you. Very helpful.
Thanks! I tried this scene three or four times already, each time getting better I think :D still not completely happy with it but I’ll be trying more again. I love this scene and color selection.
Excelente capacidad de síntesis, magnífico, magistral

Great Gary! You give me a lot of ideas and now I have to put them in order... like driving a car as you said. Thank you for share with us your knowledge

Wow so nice 😍😍
This is awesome. I have so many questions! I’m going to start by sketching the scene. I think you might have a full video of this painting.
Magnifique je retrouve l'ambiance de Paris by night, très beau travail merci

beautiful..thanks!
Thank you too!
Amazing.
The evening painting came together well gary nice work as always 👍
Thanks Kenny - hope to get back next year
❤
Love your demos! Just curious, why do you paint Europe a lot? Is it because there is more demand for it?
Wondering if you used some sort of resist on those places that looked like dry brush effects. I ask because all of your paint looked very juicy in the first wash.
Maybe the sped up video?
Nice! Awesome, should I add. What camera do you use?
It would be nice to flash a picture of what you're painting now and again for comparison
Interesting comments on the mental side of gaining experience. I just read a great book that goes into great depth on the subject called Incognito: The Sectret Lives of the Brain, by David Eagleman. To summarise the book: we're all robots.
Seria bueno verlo en HD
I don't see the ever-present paper towel or blotter that many artists rely on while creating. I thought that was different, possibly takes a little more bravery.
