If you buy a filter in the game(which most don't do since you get enough filters it shouldn't be an issue) they last a lot longer, like a half hour. The idea being your filters, being scavenged, are almost done already. Still a bit silly though since they'd be bad by sitting open in a contaminated environment.
I've watched your videos for a long time and I can gladly say that most of my knowledge about gas masks comes from you, the other comes from a cashier at a surplus store nearby. Keep making these great vids.
Important question friend. After 24 hours will it still work against something like covid 19? I imagine that the charcoal filter alone would act like an m95 for quite some time longer
the particle filter should be good against it since it travels in water, so really as long as you have a particle filter you should be good since it's not a vapor (like some others said it's not airborne)
I have been watching you for about 4 months so not that long but in that time I have learnt a lot from your videos and I probably will in the future. Great job!
Adsorption is the adhesion of molecules of gas, liquid, or dissolved solids to a surface. This process creates a film of the adsorbate (the molecules or atoms being accumulated) on the surface of the adsorbent. It differs from absorption, in which a fluid permeates or is dissolved by a liquid or solid.
I have a few questions. Question 1: Can any modern Russian filter work well with any GOST threaded mask ( as long as it's the right size of course )? Question 2: Since it's not really possible to know exactly how long a filter will last in action, what signs will let you know that it's failing and you need to swap it out? Question 3: Are there any modern versions of the larger filters that are safe to use? Question 4: Can you recommend a cheap filter I can use with my gp-5 for Halloween?
1. Yes as long as you don't get a proprietary filter, all modern Russian filters are GOST threads. 2. If you detect odour through the filter, the activated charcoal layer is failing, if it's hard to breathe through the filter, the particulate layer has clogged up. 3. Not as far as I'm aware. 4. Any NATO filter will work if you force it on, won't make an air-tight seal but is fine cosmetically, you might ruin the filter port doing that though.
I live in Iceland and the biggest threat to us here(when it comes to breathing some nasties in) is volcanic ash. And I realize that ash is really just particles. So what advice would you give me when choosing a respirator? A gas mask? Particulate mask? Help.
I did a video specifically for people in Hawaii regarding the eruption there, so I'd advise watching that video, you need a sulphur dioxide filter as well as a particle filter.
Cheers, I would highly advise against using a GP-5 filter, all are long since officially expired, so no guarantee they will work at all or for how long, and they contain asbestos, so it's actually a health risk to use them.
I recently bought a filter for one of my masks and I noticed there was some light brown substance inside the opening of the filter is that the activated charcoal leaking through and if so am I correct in my assumptions and it's shot to hell and shouldn't be used?
Yeah your good bud I used to reseal mine so it wouldn't absorb the air around it and I would do tests with air freshener every month and it worked perfectly fine
I have a half mask filter for this covid19 situation... It's rated for gas and air, but I don't expose it to chemicals or dust in a work environment, only for filtering out covid19.. how long do those last? It's rated as A1 on the filter... How long do you feel it would keep out something like covid19..?
How long would you figure a Swiss Schutzfilter 74 would last if it remained sealed? Given that they're sealed in plastic shells that were melted/welded shut, I'm not really seeing how they could expire.
thank you for uploading this video, it was very very very helpful and you are probably the only person that really goes into depth into gas masks, it's awesome that your here helping so many people who need help on gas mask, thank you! p.s. do you know what the Russian gas mask off WW2 was?? I can't find one anywhere
I had to find this video before I buy two CM CBRN masks. I assume they will be all gone soon and I need two for me and the husband. I should probably go through your videos and I will but what other filters are compatible with that particular mask?
How long can i use my filter for after opening it up? And wearing it for a couple of hours a day? Also i have the Scott 2000 p3 thread sealed do they last longer? Can i leave it on my mask because they do not have any seals.
I own a gp-5 so I am guessing is the fitting is 40mm gost thread, I thinking of replacing the old filter(I will still keep it for completing the set and for the appeal) judging by the manufacturer date which is 1981 it has a high chance of containing asbestos which should be harmless as long I keep it sealed
I have a filter which came with an S10 Mask. Its a Nato NBC Filter and it just says it was manufactured and sealed Oct 2003. The rest of the info is part munbers and stock numbers etc. Its still sealed tightly in its foil bag so how long would the expiry date be. They are made in the UK by Protector Technologies Ltd
This may be a dumb question (and yes I am late to the party) but where do you normally find your gasmask filters and what would a fair price would be for a full protection CBRN filter? I've looked around online (amazon & ebay) and have only found sparse and expensive results: the stuff I found was simply in low quantity and had pretty steep prices. I suppose you could say I'm looking for a good, trustworthy source to buy these CBRN or even Level 3 particulate filters.
P3 filters often turn up on Amazon new for about £6, otherwise seard RD40 filter, ABEK filter, or CBRN filter. You just have to be sensible when looking at price VS expiration date.
Thanks for the video! Also, as you said in the video filters last about 8 hours...so many spare filters would you consider a sufficient amount to be Properly prepared for the worst?
I would say that the manufacturer would understate the hours usable at the beginning of life. I would also think the expiration of gas masks is pretty constant over time.
I have a question. I just got a gas mask the rubber kind, and was wondering if you have to take the filter off when your not using it or if you can just leave it on.
I cant seem to find any gost filters on ebay and if I search for "gost 40mm filter" it comes up empty. Can you put a link somewhere or help me out a bit here? Thanks and great video.
I had an idea. Couldn't you stop the activated charcoal leaking from a filter with part of a coffee filter taped onto the inside where the clean air comes out when you inhale?
Yeah I had a Israeli Type 80 filter that was brand new, made in 2009, expires in I think 2024, and when I opened it I checked it and it was leaking very small amounts, and I use them for drills a lot with my PMK-2 and 4A1, and I didn't want to inhale it, and I thought I could ask you because you seem to know everything about Gas Masks and their Filters.

if i understand this correctly, I can open a particulate filter and use it once, then close it and store it away and use it again years later as long as it's within the expiration date. Is this true?
i just got my respirator today and the filters are like 2 peices of filter paper/cloth on each side blocked by of course a filter which the size of the whole is around the whole circumference of the filter itself and its gonna be quite difficult to use duct tape on it, mostly if you take it off there will be alot of tape residues.. maybe an airtight ziplock bag might work, but
Very useful info. Could you make a video on how to correctly measure head size for masks? And any other advice on choosing the right size mask would be good.
If I use already used filters but within expiration date, do they give me a real disadvantage? Not as extremely like asbestos, I rather mean like stunk or whatever.
If the filter medium is still working they are totally fine, if the charcoal inside has become saturated then the filter will offer less or no protection against vapours.
@Weaponsandstuff93 I got a couple Avon GPCF50 Filters today from 9/16 (Manufacture date) and i tore the seal on one of them to make sure it would actually fit my M40 and only had the plugs off long enough to check the seal/ if it's air tight, etc with my mask. I plugged both ends back, put it back in the package. Would it still go for the usual expiration date like one not opened?
+Weaponsandstuff93 it's a 40mm NATO filter and the date is above the barcode. Do you have any like that? any other info c will be helpful. and thanks for that info as well.

I’ve had an open filter that I used for testing that has been sitting in a drawer for a few years. I know it won’t function as a filter anymore but if I’m just using it for testing, will I be breathing in damaging chemicals?
As long as it reseals to be air-tight only minimal damage will have been done to the filter, but obviously a fully sealed factory filter will outlast a filter that's been opened and resealed a few times.
most soldering guns are made with tips that are made from a mixture of nickel and chromium called nichrome I think that would probably be more dangerous than a filter
Hey guys I have a question. I bought a gas mask which I only want to use as a.. mask. Like for helloween or something. My questions are when is the filter activated? When you remove the seal cap at the bottom? What happens when I open to top cap? Basically I just want to use it as decoration on my face and not use the actual filter (while still being on the mask). My idea is to remove the rubber on the exhale holes so I can breathe in also through it. Does wearing the filter hide any dangers?
Mate i saw NATO filter's on ebay What look just like that filter your holding what your saying is a GOST filter are the sellers on Ebay liars? for example www.ebay.ca/itm/gas-mask-filter-40mm-nato-replacement-nbc-filter-respirator-filter/263077931641?hash=item3d40aaaa79:g:9sAAAOSwY4pZYJb9

They do

As long as COVID-19 doesn’t become airborne, an expired filter is fine.
As far as I know a p3 full mask is best
the particle filter should be good against it since it travels in water, so really as long as you have a particle filter you should be good since it's not a vapor (like some others said it's not airborne)

Angelo Frisone Activated charcoal is black. If the filter is leaking anything it isn't safe. Perhaps it is manufacturing residue.
Do the shake test and see if anything falls out, the insides of filters can sometimes be discoloured.

Depends on the brand of the filter, some are only rated 5 or 10 years from manufacture date.

As long as it reseals to be air-tight only minimal damage will have been done to the filter, but obviously a fully sealed factory filter will outlast a filter that's been opened and resealed a few times.
How often does your filter change?
As in how often do you need to change the filter? Depends totally on what you're using it for.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 If are testing a gas mask like you?
I would love to buy a gp 5 . Where did you get yours?
Amazon or eBay.
most soldering guns are made with tips that are made from a mixture of nickel and chromium called nichrome I think that would probably be more dangerous than a filter
"Ban Assault soldering irons"
What gas mask would you recommend in case of an "global emergency"
I've done videos recommending different masks, any good 40mm NATO mask should be fine as long as it fits you properly
Just attach a safe filter to the mask rather than destroy a mask by ripping the exhale valves out.
Mate i saw NATO filter's on ebay What look just like that filter your holding what your saying is a GOST filter are the sellers on Ebay liars? for example

Avon M50 mask filters, if sealed in original package, how long would you estimate the use life? Thank you
10 to 20 years I think Avon says, you should have an expiry printed on the foil.
