  • Safety advice regarding gas mask/respirator filters, many of this information I have said before in previous videos but I still keep getting asked many of these questions, so I have tried to summarise it again.
    Do not use old filters, make sure a filter isn't leaking before you use it.

    No rambling whatsoever. More so, alot of common sense and wisdom I would say. You do have years of experience from not just the masks and filters, but also alot of know how and history about em, which always is interesting to listen to. Keep up the good videos mate.
    Cheers!

      Yeah I'll keep doing it as there's a lot of false dangerous information claiming the filters are safe.

  • @evan4856
    @evan4856 6 років тому +6

    I just bought a gp5 mask off of Amazon just because it was cheap and I figured I could store it away incase I needed it. all the reviews were positive and people said that they had their kids use it for a costume. even the seller comented on it swearing it was safe. it's being shipped now. that's kind of scary to think about that now knowing that, a lot of people were using them as props. oh well I'll still probably save it just in case and buy a new filter later down the road. I used to smoke cigarettes so I'm sure it wouldn't do anymore harm to my lungs lol

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 років тому +3

      Combining asbestos and smoke is meant to be very bad but yeah if exposed to something bad even an old asbestos filter is better than nothing.

    I've been wearing a Finnish M61 mask with that same Soviet filter screwed-on via a 40-60 mm adapter when in indoor public environments. I've already tested the old Soviet filter (1976) around liquid bleach fumes (cleaning my back bathroom), without catching so much as a trace of bleach through the mask.
    I'll rotate out of this filter and into a slightly more recent (1987) Finnish filter once it gets hard to breath through it. Still light years better protection than wearing a cloth or paper mask, to include eye and face protection.

    I dunno, my dad wore the GP-5 mask and filter basically every week in training, when he was serving in the Soviet army. He doesn't have any health problems from it. Of course, it was the 80s and they were brand new. Just my opinion, open for disscusion. Have a wonderful day, vechi (bros in Latvian)!

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  5 років тому +4

      Yeah back when the filters were new they were quite safe as what was inside the filter was in very good condition. My grandfather used a British MK5 gas mask in WW2 in training etc, and they were far worse contents wise than GP-5 filters, lots of blue asbestos in a sheet in the filter, yet he is 93 and still going strong. If you were to breath through a British WW2 box filter today, you would seriously damage your lungs.

    • @ringocharmley3941
      @ringocharmley3941 5 років тому

      Personally, I just got a GP-5 gas mask with filter and bag. It's from 1978, but I am not going to use it. Of course, I will wear the mask for WW1 reenactments (yes, it's not from WW1, but you gotta work with what you got) and Halloween, but without the filter, because i'm not going to risk my lung health. I would suggest, for cosplay and stuff like that, to get a gas mask hose and put the other end in the bag, without the filter. That would still make a cool impression.

    I did the leaking test on my gp5 filter. Only like 1 or 2 particulates came out, but I don't know if it came from it leaking. I might have just been dirty. But I could see a few speks on the top of the filter. But if I look closely, the speks are green tinted. I think it might have just been over spray from paint. But it was brand new, and sealed. and I used it for maybe like 20-30 minutes total. Does anyone else have an opinion? I would greatly appreciate feedback. :D

      That sounds like it would work, remove the filter and clean the can so that its empty, but as weaponsandstuff said if you use a filter with asbestos you can expose yourself. I'm no expert, this is just my opinion, but there is probably a decently safe way to do this. You could probably create some kind of replica filter that can still attach to the mask if you're the creative type.
