Gas Mask Safety advice

  • Important safety advice regarding gas masks or respirators.
    This video covers realistic risks to those which are mostly theoretical.
    In this video, I cover, the risk of asbestos inhalation from filters as well as a general risk of filters degrading over time. The risk of Chromium inhalation from filters which is widely misunderstood and a lot of misinformation is spread around regarding it.
    The risk of suffocation if you use a mask with a sealed filter.
    As well as the low-level risks of a mask containing talcum powder or a mask being contaminated with chemicals if sold as surplus.
    I would highly advise everyone follow the advice in this video to keep our hobby of gas mask collecting as safe as possible.
    If you have doubts about a mask, the safest thing is not to wear it.

    A little comfort tip: Take the mask off from back to front. If you wear it over longer time periods, especially in summer, moisture will collect around the exhaling membrane. So if you take the mask off the way you took off that GP-5, you'll smear it all over your face. Just a sergeant's advice^^

      Won’t happen. The military (at least the US Army I was in) is VERY careful and detail oriented about ordinance. Chemical weapons are treated as very serious business and nerve agents are some of the worst. If a mask was used in a nerve agent environment, it would likely be destroyed when it’s taken out of service rather than risk putting it on the surplus market.

So in case of ash or small dust which is not chemical you re use, but in case of a chemical fire, attack, or any other CBRN-like threat you use another, new one

    For GP5 masks, are size 3-4 like a one size fits all? Plus, can anybody link a modern filter for this mask?

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 років тому

      No GP-5's come in about size 1-4, size 1 being small and 4 being large.
      I have a link to a safe filter on my channels facebook page.

      Only it's filter as the filter is a unique shape to the mask.

    Could you test if a gp5 hose will have an air tight seal.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 років тому +5

      No such thing as a GP-5 hose, it's simply a Soviet 40mm hose, my OM-14 hose has a rip in it but the ShMS hose works, to test it simply block the intake of the hose, if air gets in the hose has a rip in it.

    • @viraldisc1120
      @viraldisc1120 7 років тому +1

      Weaponsandstuff93 so using a hose on a mask with a national filter would not work.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 років тому +2

      What's a "national filter"?
      You could attach a GOST filter to a GOST hose and see if you can smell anything, but that could be a result of a filter failure, you could fill a sink with water, keep each end of the hose out of the water but put the house underwater, and see if any water gets into the hose.

    I noticed you mentioned polish gas mask filters and asbestos in the same sentence and immediately I got worried. I recently bought a polish gas mask from 1983 that looked extremely similar to the soviet gp5 masks. I have worn it but never attached the filter to it. The filter is tall, and shaped almost like a large alcohol flask. I don’t know what model the gas mask is and I was wondering if the filter was dangerous or not. If you could tell me if it is or not, I would appreciate it.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 років тому +4

      There's not been tests done on the other Polish and Czechoslovakian filters from the Cold War so personally I wouldn't trust them, personally I would recommend you use modern Polish filters such as the FP-5 that still fit on the old masks but are perfectly safe.
      Sounds like you have a Polish EO-14 filter, I personally wouldn't want to breath through that for extended periods.

      @@Weaponsandstuff93 late a *lot*, but its a common misconception that the FP-5 filter works with the SzM-41M (which im guessing is mentioned), instead use the MS-4 filter that was made for the MC-4 mask. and also a tip: look at the diameter of the "gwint", 40 for the SzM-41M

    • @your_local_goose
      @your_local_goose 9 місяців тому

      and the filter mentioned here is the E-014 which is intended to be used with the pipe included, and stored in the (also included) bag

    How dangerous is talc exactly? I breathed in some when I forgot to clean out my gas mask I only wore it once with talc in it then I cleaned it out after, how likely is that talc being contaminated with asbestos?

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  5 років тому +3

      Barely dangerous, baby powder contains nothing but talc and there has been barely proven dangers regarding that for decades.

    I have the same Soviet mask as you & I’m using it for a WWI era costume as the filter does look more vintage, is it ok to wear all night for one night? If not what do I do? Are there safer, accurate-semi-accurate WWI masks?

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  4 роки тому +2

      No don't use the filter at all ideally, I'd suggest putting a hose on the mask and then just tucking it into a pocket

      Weaponsandstuff93 And yes I know the mask isn’t at all accurate, but I’m going to be at almost $400 in spending by the end of it, so I don’t want to get a $80 replica on top of it! Haha

    I bought a couple of used S10s recently and they have a bad smell about them. I'm not sure if it's because of the aging rubber, the place they were stored or if it was used in a contaminated area. I've washed them with dish soap and warm/hot water and the smell is still there. Is this normal or something to worry about?
    Btw thanks for replies to my other questions, I really appreciate all the help.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 років тому

      Most rubber will have some sort of smell to it, wash them with diluted TCP liquid to get them cleaner, you can remove the plastic circle section at the front to clean the mask more efficiently.

      It's safe without the filter but won't work, or safe and working with a modern GOST filter, but it's not safe to use the asbestos filled GP-5 filter.
