Gas Mask Safety advice

- Important safety advice regarding gas masks or respirators.
This video covers realistic risks to those which are mostly theoretical.
In this video, I cover, the risk of asbestos inhalation from filters as well as a general risk of filters degrading over time. The risk of Chromium inhalation from filters which is widely misunderstood and a lot of misinformation is spread around regarding it.
The risk of suffocation if you use a mask with a sealed filter.
As well as the low-level risks of a mask containing talcum powder or a mask being contaminated with chemicals if sold as surplus.
I would highly advise everyone follow the advice in this video to keep our hobby of gas mask collecting as safe as possible.
If you have doubts about a mask, the safest thing is not to wear it.

"You will sufficate, now let me demonstrate"
Needs a Bond villain voice.
Yeah i didn't know this. My local military shop had one of the Russian gas masks (don't know the name of it had the filter on the right cheek ive seen it in the more creepy gas masks) and yeah put it on and couldn't breathe as the cap was on😅
When I put on a Russian gas mask with ф - 7 and had the cap on
@@lucianstaggs9239 That is an F-7 btw
Cool pls dont
Solution for asbestos filter- make sure to wear a gas mask under your gas mask to be safe
(Sarcasm) duh.
A mask within a mask.
Weaponsandstuff93 the mask has an inner mask, therefore a mask in a mask in a mask in a mask
Maskception
How about a mask within a mask within a mask within a mask within a mask within a mask!
What about a mask in a mask in a mask in a mask in a mask in a mask
This video needs to be watched by everyone with a gas mask who doesn't understand filters great job
Cheers
Another informative safety video.
Thanks
Yes yes! Brother
Ive seen ur channel before
Those lego men should have learned better

my brother almost died by not taking the tab out of the filter. I think that was the most traumatized he has ever been
Hopefully he won't do it again.
Owen Charles lmao no offense but your brother is a straight up dumbass
@@Its_a_Snax agreed
Brandon PuppySnax Agreed
I stuck my hand over the plug when my brother was wearing one he had a panic attack. Lmao
I've worn my GP-5 gas mask a couple of times so thank you for making this video.
No worries.

I think is what you meant according to the adverts for class action lawsuits

I've been thinking of buying a gas mask mainly because of the cool factor, and for costumes and shit, honestly, thank you so much for your safety videos, very informative!
Thanks
A little comfort tip: Take the mask off from back to front. If you wear it over longer time periods, especially in summer, moisture will collect around the exhaling membrane. So if you take the mask off the way you took off that GP-5, you'll smear it all over your face. Just a sergeant's advice^^
Good advice thanks.
@@ye1451 Yeah, that's a valid point. However, I have long hair and I've never had a problem...
a used filter with a nerve agent stuck in it oooooooooh~ I N T E R E S T I N G~
I seriously doubt that's going to happen.
Won’t happen. The military (at least the US Army I was in) is VERY careful and detail oriented about ordinance. Chemical weapons are treated as very serious business and nerve agents are some of the worst. If a mask was used in a nerve agent environment, it would likely be destroyed when it’s taken out of service rather than risk putting it on the surplus market.
Thank you! Just got an GP-5 mask and since i don't know a lot about gas masks in general therefore i decided to watch this first.

You have been a great help to most people &answer d everyone 's on gasmasks been a prepper says thanks

A Point-Of-View Worth Viewing; Solid! Thanks!!
Thank you so much! I heard one could suffocate but didn't know how the filter worked.
No worries
Nice video! It's nice that you're going out of your way to make videos like this, gas maskes aren't toys and people should know what not to do.
Cheers
Nice video, I was thinking of getting a gp-5. I know you can't use the original filter, thanks for the info.
thank you very much. I benefit from your wealth of knowledge.
11:43 This. I can't quite grasp why some people seem so desperate to put on an old filter.
Your channel is very helpful thanks
Glad you like it.

Thanks for this video
I just got a gp5 and I don’t want cancer
Thank you for making this
No problem
Thank you!
Thanks I want one but I wanna see the safeness of them
Great video thanks
I have a quick question. Is it safe to display WWII/any gas masks, without the filter? Or will the asbestos still be in the mask, contaminating the air. Thanks.
On chromium, ive been exposed to it in gas form while welding.
You should do a vid where you cut open and eo-19 filter and see what is inside and if it contains asbestos.
Sadly not really practical, would have to buy more EO-19 filters, when I get an electric microscope I may do that though, I'll think about it.
if you take the filter off a old gas mask and don't wear the filter is there still a chance of just the mask having espestos?
This is all speculation, but maybe the talco powder in soviet hoses is for sealing, i mean, it's the same logic with latex gloves, the talco powder seals the holes and porus the latex could have
I think it's mostly for gripping and sweat reduction as well as storage preservation.
Its from the manufacture molds as a release agent and rubber vulcanization process... And powder on gloves facilitates putting them on... Have you ever put powderless gloves on w wet or sweaty hands?
The powder in gloves is to make donning and doffing gloves easier with sweaty hands.
Man Thanks.
Good to know!
Cheers
For things like volcano ash clouds or smoke from a burning house somewhere (so not chemical) is it possible to dust out an FP-5 and re use it for that same purpose, or is it dangerous to do that? So in case of ash or small dust which is not chemical you re use, but in case of a chemical fire, attack, or any other CBRN-like threat you use another, new one
Great video mate

is there a specific way to clean a gp4? cause i personally just dunked it in warm water with dish soap
Wow thx i need that
I have a gp-5 I got to wear on Halloween, it said it was charcoal activated and I did say it was coated with talc so I cleaned it should I still be worried about the filter because I’ve worn that mask several times
Ok thanks
No problem.
I love this channel
Cheers
What type of replacement filters do you recommend? I have one of those Polish GP-5 looking masks.
Fp-5 filter as far as I know it works with Soviet and NATO masks (don't quote me on this)
how do i know if my filter is expired?
do you know how to empty that gp5 gas mask? so i can use it being empty
Lovely video, very informative.
I've got a question though; Where could I buy Israeli Gas Mask filters? (Speaking of the Shalon M-80).
Ebay doesn't seem to have (m)any, but I would like to get my hands on a few.
Cheers.
Army surplus stores/amazon or ebay, you just have to shop around until you find them.
Alright, I'll keep looking around, and hopefully find some. Thanks for the reply!
Generic Nickname i believe there is a filter for the Israeli masks. Also just search (not on ebay) on google ebay israel mask
Yes there is a filter, it's called the M80, that's why he asked where he could find it. It comes in tan, green and black.
This guy made me buy a gas mask
same
Same got a gp-5 because Soviet
@Ryder busta straight busta
Can you sleep with a gas mask on, or would the breathing resistance be too high and suffocate you? Also, how can I keep the metal parts on a gas mask from rusting when I clean it?
As long as you dry it properly it won't rust, and yes you can sleep with gas masks on but it won't be comfortable.
Where can I find new/unused filters for a Belgian m51?
I personally own a M1A2 non-combatant mask Ive worn it before im not to sure if a contains asbestos ill be sure not to make that mistake again I believe my model is from 43' thanks for the warning about this.
Most United States WW2 filters contain asbestos but hopefully the filter wasn't leaking and you didn't wear it for long.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 I wore for like less than a minute so I'm probably fine that was a while ago as well the mask is in pretty good condition Ill be more careful now.
Yeah you'll be fine asbestosis etc takes years of exposure to normally develop.
+Weaponsandstuff93 their is a channel named Guns, Cars and Guitars 452, that Russian GP-5 Filters or any Soviet Era Filters that was manufactured later than 1972 doesnt contain any white and blue asbestos in the filters. Is that true?
No totally false, I've already made a video with asbestos reports from multiple laboratories with tests on filters from the 1980s.
Question, I found a Mk-5 British gas mask from WWII a few months ago, and without any prior research I tried it on and breathed through it without thinking it could cause any harm. I only wore it for a good 3 minutes and I was wondering if I should get checked for anything, especially after finding out they contain blue asbestos.
Thanks
Lung x-rays can show scarring to the lungs I believe but hopefully 3 minutes of exposure to a filter won't have done much
Would a 1980s filter for a gp5 be dangerous and the bottom plug of the filter was covered in a whit stain
Don't use GP-5 filters full stop.
Would the hose of a ShMS be contaminated if it was connected to the original filter?
Potentially but it's a very low risk, bear in mind the majority of Soviet masks that are surplus were never used.
mesothelioma is the name of the disease. Mesothelioma is a cancer that most commonly starts in the layers of tissue that cover each lung (the pleura). More rarely it starts in the layer of tissue in the abdomen that surrounds the digestive system organs (the peritoneum). bit of information taken from google for anyone that wants to know more :)
Do you know if the pbf filters have asbestos? I'm not sure the years those were made
Most likely yes, every other Soviet filter contained asbestos.
Can modern filters be spraypainted as a cosmetic without ruining the filter or anything similar?
Probably not.
Are you able to take the inside cotton and char coal out of the filter.
Very informative video! I'm not a collector myself, but just bought a GP-5 mask for a cosplay. Not even bothering with the filter, and already cleaned the dust/powder out of it, are there any dangers or safety measures to take wearing the mask as is with no filter?
Nope wearing a GP-5 without a filter is perfectly safe, it's just not going to protect you from anything.
i have an old ms 3 filter that before i did research, i had my brother fart in my face, it doesn't leak but it was heavily used, anyways, it surprisingly still works, only wore that chromium filter twice luckily
Ok woah woah WHPTHOW?
Good information! Funny thing is I forgot to remove the plug on the filter and didn't realize it until I tightened up the mask! Instant panic. Needless to say I won't be doing that again. 👍
I put on my gp-5 as i got it and just panicked because i too forgot to pull the plug
6:55 "Let me demonstrate what happens if you do this." *Kevin Macleod song plays as 3 minutes pass* "Alright that was the demonstra-"
Do you need to wear a filter with a gas mask? I want to get one off of amazon, just for Halloween. So what should I do? I love you’re videos and thank you if you get this.
Only if you want it to protect you from airborne threats, without a filter you just breath regular air.
Weaponsandstuff93 thank you really appreciate it
What mask you getting?
oh no i bought a gas mask when i was 11 years old off ebay and the gas mask doesnt fit me im pretty sure it was in used in 1944 so now i think i have asbestosis
I got a gas mask from the Solvents what should I do?
Is the threat primarily from wearing the old mask? For example, is it still okay to have an old WWII gas mask inside your home on display, even inside your room?
You should be fine just having it on display. I’d probably seal up the filter with something to make sure nothing can come out if dropped or whatever, but there’s not much to worry about beyond that.
I just bought british ww2 mask and it has that 60mm to 40mm adapter how do i remove it
Simply unscrew it.
I have this kinda mask, put out the cap yet still suffocated.. is there any plug in inside the mask that I dont know?
Maybe the filter doesnt work
I know a guy who ran in a gp5 I believe when he served in the army
He has not have a lung cancer
Asbestos related cancers can take 30+ years to develop and not everyone gets them. If the filter isn't leaking you can't inhale the asbestos, however knowingly using an asbestos filter is basically playing Russian roulette with your long term health.
He's an lucky one
Sounds classic
how do you wash out talken in a soviet gas mask and where is talken in a soviet gas mask?
He made a video about that
The arsenic pre filter is the wrong way round.
I know this video was posted awhile ago but would you be able to replace a WW2 gas mask filter with some newer filter. Most likely not but I’m curious.
You need to watch what filters they use
Example gp5 fits 40mm filters so you can potentially use all 40mm filter whit the gp5
@@nhynuke_gamer1595 thanks
when when did italy stop using asbestos? i have an m.31 gas mask with a CMP A2B filter on it dated 9-12-65
No idea but personally I would never use a filter older than the 1980s from most nations.
Weaponsandstuff93 ya i don’t use it just wondering
The m65 filters had warning tape on the plug, hopefully people were trained with gas mask to take the plug off.
A lot of filters do, doesn't stop people winning Darwin awards.
I bought a polish sr-1 mask with the hose and filter. Would it be safe if I dispose the filter or maybe the hose too and put it on display?
No need to dispose of anything, just keep the filter plugged, the hose is totally safe.
Is there somewhere I can buy a prop GP-5 filter (just basically an empty shell)?
No, closest thing is the awful Chinese refillable filters, open it, pour the contents in a bin and reseal it. It will filter nothing but it still sort of looks like a filter.
where can i get a breathable gp-5 filter?
Hello Weaponsandstuff93, I use a cm-3 gas mask and was wondering what kind of filters would fit my mask and would also asbestos free.
Polish FP-5 filters.
Weaponsandstuff93 Thank you.
For GP5 masks, are size 3-4 like a one size fits all? Plus, can anybody link a modern filter for this mask?
No GP-5's come in about size 1-4, size 1 being small and 4 being large.
I have a link to a safe filter on my channels facebook page.
But if i take the filters of from the GP5 and breathe with it,is it save too?
Yeah
I mean, as someone who took chromium pills at one point, it's not exactly cyanide poison levels...
Xl-90-16 ( or 46 ) BKF solviet filter dangerous?
All Soviet filters are dangerous.
Amazing content
Cheers
Weaponsandstuff93 I live in America and I have a question about a Yugoslavian gas mask I am wondering if the original filter would be dangerous
I pulled out the plug from the filter issued with my gas mask and the plug was covered in some kind of white dust
I dont know if it is talc, asbestos or anything else
Prob talk what country is the mask from what color is it I might be able to help
*talc not talk
m10 cheekfilters? they safe? they dont leak black stuff, are dry and were vacuumsealed up to a few hours ago. are they safe to breath through or not?
Nobody actually knows
Is it ok to breathe through a gp-5 filter if it isn't leaking or not?
Not really
Hi i just bought a gas mask an old British s10, am using it for a cosplay and i saw a video talking about the dangers, i just got the package in today am alittle afraid to open it lol but am going to an army surplus store on friday to ask about them and check it out, but is there anything you would suggest ?
+Luke wontsay Masks are safe just not some filters, what does the filter look like?
Weaponsandstuff93 what gas masks could I get for a cheap price???id say around 13-50 $
I did an entire video on that, please watch it.
And in a m10m can you only use its filters or can you use diffrent ones
Only it's filter as the filter is a unique shape to the mask.
Could you test if a gp5 hose will have an air tight seal.
No such thing as a GP-5 hose, it's simply a Soviet 40mm hose, my OM-14 hose has a rip in it but the ShMS hose works, to test it simply block the intake of the hose, if air gets in the hose has a rip in it.
Weaponsandstuff93 so using a hose on a mask with a national filter would not work.
What's a "national filter"?
You could attach a GOST filter to a GOST hose and see if you can smell anything, but that could be a result of a filter failure, you could fill a sink with water, keep each end of the hose out of the water but put the house underwater, and see if any water gets into the hose.
Weaponsandstuff93 a ment nato would it work with a hose
Nive video.
Cheers.
i opend the plug of my gp6 and on the plug was asbestosfibers
I noticed you mentioned polish gas mask filters and asbestos in the same sentence and immediately I got worried. I recently bought a polish gas mask from 1983 that looked extremely similar to the soviet gp5 masks. I have worn it but never attached the filter to it. The filter is tall, and shaped almost like a large alcohol flask. I don’t know what model the gas mask is and I was wondering if the filter was dangerous or not. If you could tell me if it is or not, I would appreciate it.
There's not been tests done on the other Polish and Czechoslovakian filters from the Cold War so personally I wouldn't trust them, personally I would recommend you use modern Polish filters such as the FP-5 that still fit on the old masks but are perfectly safe.
Sounds like you have a Polish EO-14 filter, I personally wouldn't want to breath through that for extended periods.
ok thanks
@@Weaponsandstuff93 late a *lot*, but its a common misconception that the FP-5 filter works with the SzM-41M (which im guessing is mentioned), instead use the MS-4 filter that was made for the MC-4 mask. and also a tip: look at the diameter of the "gwint", 40 for the SzM-41M
and the filter mentioned here is the E-014 which is intended to be used with the pipe included, and stored in the (also included) bag
How dangerous is talc exactly? I breathed in some when I forgot to clean out my gas mask I only wore it once with talc in it then I cleaned it out after, how likely is that talc being contaminated with asbestos?
Barely dangerous, baby powder contains nothing but talc and there has been barely proven dangers regarding that for decades.
Weaponsandstuff93 thanks for the quick response
I have the same Soviet mask as you & I’m using it for a WWI era costume as the filter does look more vintage, is it ok to wear all night for one night? If not what do I do? Are there safer, accurate-semi-accurate WWI masks?
No don't use the filter at all ideally, I'd suggest putting a hose on the mask and then just tucking it into a pocket
Weaponsandstuff93 Crazily enough, I literally just thought of doing that an hour before you commented that! This has worked out perfectly so thanks!
Weaponsandstuff93 And yes I know the mask isn’t at all accurate, but I’m going to be at almost $400 in spending by the end of it, so I don’t want to get a $80 replica on top of it! Haha
I bought a couple of used S10s recently and they have a bad smell about them. I'm not sure if it's because of the aging rubber, the place they were stored or if it was used in a contaminated area. I've washed them with dish soap and warm/hot water and the smell is still there. Is this normal or something to worry about?
Btw thanks for replies to my other questions, I really appreciate all the help.
Most rubber will have some sort of smell to it, wash them with diluted TCP liquid to get them cleaner, you can remove the plastic circle section at the front to clean the mask more efficiently.
Ok I will try that soon
I'm about to get a GP-5 mask and will it be dangerous?
Only if you breath through the green filter.
cool video
Thanks
Isnt the gp-5 fine without the filter and its just worse with the filter
It's safe without the filter but won't work, or safe and working with a modern GOST filter, but it's not safe to use the asbestos filled GP-5 filter.
Could you open up gas mask filters and clean them out?
Not easily or safely.
