Trios like this are arguably the best form for jazz. Everyone shines. No thick banging and thrashing about, just smooth flowing notes. These guys are top notch.
They all have magic fingers , Metheny on the guitar is amazing and all those ghost notes on the snare … i used to listen this album every day when it came out back in the day.
@@Bebopin-69 Hey Bebop... listen to some of those Gateway Albums with Holland and Jack DeJohnette. I was yearning for good jazz back in the early 80's, and they delivered.
Me too! I’m 50 and have been trying his style out for years. Popcorn man on the drums. Coltrane with Haynes and Monk with Haynes are my favorite versions of the two bands.
I traveled to Europe because of that album. The band director heard me practicing to that album for weeks and hired me for the gig. I had head phones on and he thought I was good? We’re all good playing the things we know or have memorized. Ahahaha the album was good and I was just trying to keep up. Mr Haynes is like Elvin with rudimental chops. Simply perfection.
@@benlogan430 Wow, playing along that record got you a big band gig tour in Europe? Damn... I''m sure Haynes would be proud if he knew this! Cheers from Brazil, stay safe.
Although iI must be fair and add that 'Bright Size Life', his 1976 debut, as well as 1999's Trio Live (w/ Larry Grenadier and Bill Stewart) as well as 2007's 'Day Trip' (w/ Christian McBride and Antonio Sanchez) are great too. But 'Question and Answer' is my favorite.
First saw Pat and company in the 80's during the First Circle tour, brilliant stuff, but the trios, the trios.....thanks for posting, and thanks eternally, Pat, Roy, and Dave.
At 70 years old, lifetime drummer...the more drummers I listen to all these greats ..including Buddy, I've realized that I am my favorite drummer in the world. I tend to get bored with these folks. The only two drummers I still enjoy are, Gene Krupa and Speedy Jones. Gene is Gene....and Speedy is beyond human. And please. ..don't ask me to put up a video of my skills.. cause I am very modest.
RIP jazz master Roy Haynes. 🙏
Mr Roy Haynes is my hero. I am 74
RIP Roy. Amazing

I still like Pat the most in small group settings like this.
Roy Haynes so unique fn awesome drumming. Damn good stuff 👍
Great drummers still carry great jazz.
Give a holler for bassist Holland. So underrated. Magic fingers.

When I grow up, I want to be like Roy Haynes.

So am I. Long live Snap Crackle “Roy Haynes”
Fun fact : Roy was 65 years old himself on this video !
This is great Jazz. PM's best Trio record in my humble opinion - "Question and Answer".
He took the guitar trio to a new level with this recording... Not my opinion, it is the truth.
Definitely! I agree! I don´t get tired listening to it since I own this record. A true timeless gem.

One of my very first live jazz experiences was this trio at the Blues Alley. I'm still speechless.
One of the best trio's ever !!!

@@keithhodges9776 He likes teasing.
Embracing his inner beast!

Roy played his Ass off!
Thank you for posting, could not imagine that I could watch this. This trio is the best one among his various trio.
I wouldn't be so quick to say this.

" H & H " di Pat Metheny 1990
I remember when that guitar looked new....lol
Dave looks like office or bank worker, Roy is just left his big truck, Pat is "crazy" professor..
I love this but what happen with the hi hat? like...nothin
I like the ibanez's sound more
dave holland is a beast! what's this tune called?

Did Pat play his Gibson on "Question and answer" album or his Ibanez?
fedbos91 ibanez I believe
Both - according to an PM interview I've read somewhere.
Tha'ts the first record where he played the Ibanez exculsevely!!
I also read an interview where he said Q and A was the first recording in which he exclusively used the Ibanez
Don't really get methany playing to well. His playing is very flat and no dynamics. Other than that he I a great technician on his instrument.
So the use of motif, question and answer, rhythmic displacement, tension and release, consonance and dissonance, non of that is interesting to you?
@@ertoliart I think he’s a phenominally furious improviser!!!
If you think this is “flat and no dynamics”, seek help. To each his own, but Metheny’s dynamics on the instrument are unparalleled.
