    We all know them, the rough soundchecks!
    Where everything is very important
    except the sound of the monitors and the convenience to play.

    I did sound for Steve for a drum masterclass. Time was short, sound check was 5 minutes max. Steve just got to work no complaints. Got a hug at the end because Steve noticed how hard the setup was. Great guy and musician. Had dinner that night with Steve and a drum tech. I was in heaven!

      Musicians who have their shit together are always easy to soundcheck. It's the ones who think they have it together are the problem. If everyone is on the same page, you can get a lot done in 5 minutes.

    A great sound guy listens to the drummer, if the drummer can’t hear the band properly the band won’t sound good. I use to dislike sound guys who don’t understand that.Gadd isn’t messing around he wants to know he can hear everything. Drummer is the root of the band. Great video!

      that is just the case when you are steve Gadd. When you are a random drummer like me that is a cheap excuse to sound bad. We normally have to face not optimal scenarios where the sound is not that good & we should solve and sound good (maybe not great), and we can do that when we actually study the songs and learn our parts, with or without good monitor.

    Might look like diva behaviour from the outside but we need to have a good night for the rest of the band to have a good night. Nothing ruins a show for us more than a frustrating mix. When Steve talks people listen. This man plays so well in group formats. On Grover Washington’s Come Morning album as one of many examples he never overtook the band. He anchors the band. Rather it’s Grover, Steely Dan, or Paul Simon. Yet when he does take an occasion to give you fills he gives you Aja. One of favorite drummers. Up there with Vinnie and Stewart.

    This is an excellent example of how IEMs solves so many issues, makes the production smoother and everyone happier. The stage volume is obviously quite loud, yet Gadd is not getting a direct enough sound from the monitors because most of what he's hearing is from the PA. The balance here is always difficult, and when dealing with a lot of wedges, especially for a drummer surrounded by acoustically loud sources, you will end up with compromises. With IEMs, not only does it allow them to get the most direct sound possible right to the ear without fighting with anything else, it also seals the ear so that no other acoustic source interferes. FOH doesn't need to worry at all about whatever's going on in the monitors. Also, troubleshooting is much more difficult with wedges, since the monitor engineer is not able to actually hear what the talent hears. They can listen to headphones and check the balance, but how it actually sounds is determined by the monitor being used, the placement, direction, other sources, PA etc. So you actually have to stand where the talent stands to be able to hear what they hear. Also, if they're a musician that's been playing on super loud stages for 40+ years, they are probably on the brink of being deaf.

    • @martymcdermott67
      @martymcdermott67 Місяць тому +6

      it's a jazz gig. The loudest thing on stage, with PA and wedges off, should be either the drumkit, the horns, or the piano if it's acoustic. Everything else has a volume knob. Without wedges, if you have a volume knob, and all you can here is you, you're too loud. After you sort that out, you get in the wedge ONLY what you can't hear naturally. And only at a volume that you actually need, without having to turn yourself back up again. Guys like Gadd etc played in wee jazz clubs forever, where the musicians just played together. IEM can take away that "in the room" vibe. They definitely have their place, but they're not the perfect solution to everything. Volume control is the key here. The problem with the phone app for IEM's, I've found, is that dudes spend as much time tweaking their mix throughout the gig, like they're trying to mix a CD, as the do playing the actual gig! If a musician can't balance their own sound against tne rest of the band, un-mic'd, then they shouldn't be let near a monitor mix.
      Gadd seemed to be advocating for volume control here. Jazz levels, not rock levels.

    If the drummer is comfortable with the levels from the monitors, that drummer is more likely to find the pocket of the tune . The band will be playing for x amount of time and will want to enjoy it rather than feel like it's work. The monitor mix enables a listener perspective in the music and so with a great mix the musicians can get in the zone and vibe like listeners. Part of enjoying playing music is that you are still a listener too

    Yeah, I could see how he could get a little bent. Hehehe. It almost seems like they wanted the band to start playing and do some front of house audio first. I've done lots of gigs with techs and a lot of gigs doing the PA myself. I've also done PA for other bands. My current band uses wedges. I like to get a comfortable stage volume and all of the monitors dialed in before I even bother doing FOH. I have a digital board, so everyone can have a separate monitor mix. My band opened for a headliner about a month ago in a medium sized club. The FOH was way too loud making the stage volume also too loud. Our lead vocalists only had SM58's instead of Beta's and they could barely hear themselves. The tech never really muted FOH and got the monitors dialed in first. It can be rough sometimes.

    are they debating G minor versus B flat major or G major versus B flat major?

  • @StarAD
    @StarAD 9 днів тому

    I understand they need to hear themselves and that is only an empty room problem. The reason I asked for the bands to play without any PA and monitor sound until they need to ask something in their monitors. Many times it is not only the PA sound in an empty room, it is the musicians themselves that are too loud for a "rehearsal" sound. In other spectrum is the people that paid to hear them and they can´t because the musicians think they do not need PA sound. The first sentence of him goes in this direction but he said "maybe" with the full room. Well, it is not maybe. It is the sound engineer job to use the system to fill the room with sound and not only the VIP front row. I really think he is making things harder than it can be for not explaining right that the sound of the empty venue is affecting the stage sound, as it always do, and lower it or cut it until the mix on the stage is right. We as sound engineers know that when the show starts this problems are going away but we also need to test the FOH sound so people will enjoy the show not only the musicians. Btw, the front of house guy was mixing the kick drum too loud and it is the reason Steve thought it was too loud overall. If you want an unprocessed kick drum sound you cannot mix it so loud.

    This is equally true for a heavy metal band as it is for jazz.

    Seems like the sound guys were concerned with how it sounds in front of house and Gadd wanted it to sound loud enough on stage for all the musicians to hear and feel it! "There can't be more out there (foh) than whats coming from here (stage)"...so much for the "quiet stage" nonsense that is trendy now.

    • @hepphepps8356
      @hepphepps8356 Місяць тому +1

      It is not nonsense, it is imperative. Fucked up stage volumes with sources out of balance create this problem. Getting that under control solves everything.
      Some rooms gives so much back to stage from the PA that it is meaningless to start working on the wedges without the room already present.
      The fault here is all on Gadd. He didn’t trust the sound engineer. There is only one solution to that, it is getting one you trust to do the job. If he/she is not present, you simply have to pretend to trust tge one present. Arguing or trying to mix from stage never works, everything just falls apart.

    What does the video actually show?
    completely normal musical everyday life. Watch orchestra rehearsals. And basically it has nothing to do with Steve Gadd. Precisely because as a spatial central figure with his drums he relies on balanced answers based on balanced skills. Basically it's the basics of how to create a monitor mix and a FOH mix.
    It also depends on the space. Then you have to make it clear in good time what doesn't fit. You can't play if you don't hear yourself enough.
    Regardless of the instrument. It has nothing to do with musical genius or other privileges to notice something like that. It's no different for any other musician. But the unexperienced are less aware of it.
    What's important is that you trust your ears and then intervene immediately.
    Musicians are often too lethargic about such things. because they often have no idea about sound. And sound engineers don't care about musical interaction.
    And one thing is nothing unusual either. that you forget pitches. Especially at Cornell, who probably already had severe oxygen problems back then, if I classify the time of the audience correctly, small things like that should just be ignored.
    Steve wasn't entirely sure either. otherwise he wouldn't have asked the others.
