Thanks for the video. I hate working on vehicles, especially 19 year old rusty ones. But since I’m not wealthy and since I drive older vehicles, I’m relegated to doing as much repair myself as I can. Thanks to videos like this, it’s much easier. I very much appreciate the effort you put into the video!
Thats why I do these. For the people who need a little encouragement to try it on their own.
I just buy the rebuild kit off RockAuto (Edleman or AC Delco)and rebuild the pump myself, that way if it fails again or leaks- its on me. I must say though, Ive rebuilt 3 Pumps (Jeep Wj's 4.0L) and have had great success on all 3- No leaks, No whining...in fact still alive today. Great content
I'm shocked they sell a rebuild kit. To be honest I never thought to look. Thanks for watching.
Just did a pitman arm seal job for a friend. Got everything back together and serviced up. Now there is no power steering. Its a 1998 TJ 4.0.
I will give it your jack stand test and see what that may correct.
There are not too many videos on youtube for this topic and couldn't find one for a 98TJ. I must say though your instruction is spot on. I am a professional Aircraft Mechanic and know my way around stuff. Step dad was a ASE Master Tech and I started my mechanical adventure handing him tools at the age of 7. Aircraft are cleaner and all are hot rods of the sky. Auto's are my hobby.
Really liked your video it was spot on to the job and nobody should get lost watching it. Thank you for your time invested to make this. Jeep on Brother.
So awesome to hear from you. If the pump is working you can try removing the return line on the back of the pump and make sure you have good return flow.
@@BigFrogs4x4 Did the jack stand test. It blew everything out of the pitman arm again. I think the box is ready to be replaced. 244K. I put that c-clamp in as best I could. Even went to Acr HDWR for a piece of pipe to make sure I got it up in there even. Then a flat blade to cram it if it wasn't there. Nope all blew lose again. Time for a new box and I dig on Red Head.
Good video. I’ve done them 25 years ago and just needed to brush up so I can do one this weekend. No surprises but I was curious which puller I needed. Thanks!
I appreciate the compliment and awesome things went well for you.
Nice video and informational. Creed is also a good add on.
Time for me to do this. Great video
Thanks. I don't remember if i said in my video but it helps to measure the distance between the pump and pulley so you know its fully seated
Hey BF !
Great help !!!
Thank you! Helping people is why I do these. Certainly isn't for the money lol. And I honestly don't like being on camera.
you are the man, thank you.
I do this to try to help people. I do my best.
Thanks for reply dude
No problem. I reply to almost every comment. I will only ignore hateful comments and ones I simply miss.
Great video. Question for you: What toolset would you recommend (puller/installer)? I have a wrangler with the same engine. So whatever tools you're using should work fine. Thanks.
Harbor freight hand tools are fine for a job like this. I will see if i can find a good one i would trust. Mine is cornwell i think.

This is one i would not hesitate to buy. They make great auto tools. But you can find one cheaper or rent one from an auto parts store for free.
That's great! Thanks so much.
I'm about to do the PS pump on my XJ. Today actually. How far did you press on the pulley? The current one is on backwards so it's flush with the end of the shaft (but no lip for a puller to grab. I'd like to put this one on correctly. Looks like you had some space between the end of the shaft and the edge of the pulley in front.
I will have to take a look. I eyeball it. It's just past flush if i remember correctly. You can also take thin string and place it in the 1st groove of the pulleys and eyeball from there if it's square
THANK YOU!! 🙌🏻 Every video I’ve looked at has been mediocre with information. Since I’m a new Jeep owner, I’d prefer to save the money and fix everything myself. I’ve subscribed and will be back regularly 😂
Thank you. I'm glad to help!
Two screws and one electrical connection and the electric fan pulls out. Wouldn't that make the job quite a bit easier? (Ah. I see you do this around the 12 minute mark.)
How about cutting the old return line off of the reservoir instead of buying a new one? New reservoir cost vs new hose cost (if you even needed that 3/4" of hose for proper routing).
Thanks for the video.
I came across one where someone directly wired the fan because the plug had corroded. Rather than cut and reconnect the wires, I had to leave the fan in. Thanks for the feedback.
Do you recommend parts from eBay ? Sometimes I check in places like autozone and price difference it could be between 40 to 50 dollars... am not talking about OEM PARTS....
Ebay maybe. Depending on parts I go local part stores because if you have a faulty part or warranty issue it's easier to return it to an auto parts store.
And from experience it's safer to buy new over a remanufactured power steering pump.
How much noise is normal from one of these that's working well? Mine is pretty noisy, but IDK if it's going bad or just normal for these.
You really shouldn't hear anything. Mine makes noise because I modified it for a little more flow.
What size o-ring does the new pump take? 5/16 x 1/16?
I wish I could tell you. I don't remember. It was too long ago.
I found out my squeak is coming from my power steering pump pulley when I take the belt off to spin it by hand. I guess I'll have to replace the whole pump then?
Unfortunately it sounds like it
Autozones ps pumps are straight trash. Good video and also if anyone tackling this if ur belt does fall loose there is a diagram on the left front corner how it loops back up
Thanks.
My diagram is long gone :-)
@@BigFrogs4x4 lol mine still going, can't say much about the body tho :)
Lol
What is the thread size of those 3 13 bolts?
This is what I found with a quick Google search. M8x1.25x95mm
Your best bet would be to call a dealer and verify that is correct.
I thought this would be an easier job for me to do but seems a bit complicated. Mine is leaking a bit, I want it swapped, I hate leaks.
You should be able to rent the tools from an auto parts store. And then you get your money back when you return the tool. Take pics as you take it apart.
You don't have to mark potion of the belt?
No. Not on a serpentine belt.
Lesson of the day dont buy reman parts when for at least pressurized things Haha. Great video though
Ya it bites me in the butt way too often. Most of the time it comes down to cost. My radiator was a really cheap one from Amazon. Been a few years and its going well. It did come with junk brackets so i have to transfer the stock ones to it.
@@BigFrogs4x4 I'm buying a 1998 Cherokee with no rust for very cheap. Just needs a few things. I want to get a new pump from rockauto but worried because $70 for a new pump with reservoir vs $250+ scares me lol
For that price difference I would take the risk. If you're doing the job yourself you can buy the pulley puller/installer tool with the money saved. Its not a real difficult job if for some reason you need to do it again.
Please try 12 hole injectors lots better then 4 hole. Then add a 43k volt coil and your Jeep and it should leap to life. I tried four hole and it was a step up. But then tried the 12 hole injectors it's a lot more bang for the buck.
Thanks for the advice
Which snap on puller did you use?
I'm pretty sure it's a Cornwell. I will have to get you the part number later.
Part # on tool is 4681
UA-cam is getting bold placing two unskippible ads in the video
How many total? I have little control over it but will do what I can. Thanks for letting me know. I did turn off political ads
You need to put Dexron 3 in that power steering pump not power steering fluid. Probably why your pump keeps failing.
What brand of pump failed that required replacement a second time??
I'm guessing you are asking the other person's comments?
@@BigFrogs4x4 No...at 2:26 you said you had just installed the pump you were now removing... 2 months ago and had to now replace and warranty it. I was curious the brand of the pump that failed so soon.
Lol it's been so long I didn't remember that. It most likely would have been from advance auto parts. I had forgotten all about it. Thanks for reminding me. I get most of my warranty parts from them because they offer good coupon codes with online purchases. Up to 25% if you do an internet search.
Oh the new one would cut out time to time making it harder to steer.
@@BigFrogs4x4 Thanks...I have ordered a new pump from Rock Auto that had good reviews on Amazon even though it is a Chinese pump and reservoir. An SKP SK2038771
would this work for a 1999 tj
4 or 6 cyl
Neither of these engines have the bleader screw.
It was a good video however at the beginning when you were breaking the p/s pressure line not you were banging on the wrench with your hand. That is the fastest route to developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Then when you were removing the pulley you don't need to stick a punch in the pump to stop the pulley because the tool you were using has a place to use a wrench to hold the tool which in turn holds the pulley stationary.
Good video, but I have to say, people get carpal tunnel syndrome by using the heel of their hands as hammers. My college roommate had to have surgery, and he was in hell. And while I'm preaching, wear ear protection when going to concerts, using loud power equipment, and shooting. I guarantee you will be glad you listened to me.
You are correct. But you know how we are. In a hurry to get the proper tool. :-)
13mm
I just cut it off on the bottom I have extra holes at the bottom
Did mine the same way and the power steering isn’t work
Were you able to bleed the air out? If you got a remanufactured part it may be bad.
Yeah it is remanufactured. But I did bleed it a bunch. Took the return line off started briefly and fluid was coming out refilled and took off the metal tube briefly started and it shot about 10 feet
So I don’t think it’s the pump. But it was the pump that went bad. The power steering was fine then the pump went out driving home. Fluid went everywhere.
The pump may be putting out pressure but not enough pressure to help the gearbox. If you Jack the front end off the ground and the engine shut off is it easy to turn the steering wheel left and right?
It’s easier if you do that yeah
That is an old shirt.
Lol it was new at the time
Remive the fan and use a rachet
Thats an option. I worked on a different persons xj where they direct wired the fan with no plug to remove, so I couldn't remove the fan without cutting wires. I'm just showing it can be done.
