  • Is the Power Steering Pump in your 97-01 Jeep Cherokee XJ leaking, groaning, or just not working right? In this video, I'll be replacing the power steering pump in my '00 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) and the high and low pressure lines as well. I'll go over everything needed to do this job including the parts and tools.
Please 👍 the video if you enjoyed it or learned something, and comments are always appreciated!

One of the advantages of having a leak is that the fluid acts as a natural protector and rust inhibitor! Ironic, I know but my XJ had a small rear main leak that would drip down the back of the transmission and transfer case (when at speed, otherwise it would just drip on the ground) and when I power washed it all off, the transmission and transfer case looked nearly new!
I would recommend a penetrating fluid (Project Farm UA-cam channel has a great video about it ua-cam.com/video/xUEob2oAKVs/v-deo.html) and letting it soak for at least overnight. Fortunately, power steering fluid and ATF4 have a high flash point so if all else fails, you can use a small propane torch to apply some heat - just don't use welding gasses as those get hot enough to combust the fluid. Also, if your hoses allow, having the power steering pump at a level where you can see and work on it easier helps a lot as well.
Good luck with your project, and thanks for watching!

They put a blue plug on mine, so it's much more obvious.

You should have replaced your lower radiator hose while you had easy access.

Perhaps, but I had already replaced that about 3 years earlier when I replaced my water pump. And, if you aren't prepared to replace your coolant, then its also not a good time. But it is a great time to inspect all of those hoses and, really anything in that area that might need replacing since you're going to be in that area anyways!
Thanks for the comment, and for the like!

When your power steering is leaking... everything is lubricated!!
Seriously tho... all of the clamps are those pinch type. I have a right angle pair of plyers that I use now for just such a thing. The hoses themselves will be easier to remove if they aren't old and formed into place or brand new are not as pliable. Mine, it seems, were replaced at some point prior to me so they were "old" but not original, and not brand new.
Hopefully that helps you - delayed as it is, or someone else looking to do the same thing.
      Thanks for watching!!
