How To Remove/Install a Power Steering Pump Pulley

  • When you purchase a new power steering pump, they usually do not come with a pulley installed AND your old pulley is usually in fine shape. What you need is a Power Steering Pump Pulley Puller/Installer. These can be rented at any auto parts store and will do the trick of removing your pulley from your old pump, and installing it on your new pump.
    The power steering pump in the video came from a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L, but this process is the same for almost all power steering pumps.

    Thanks for this video... simple and clear... the instructions with my puller set actually shows the wrenching arrow going the wrong way for my pulley installation... I do mine on the car because I have no work vice... One thing I noticed is you can't let the pulley spin as you wrench... I noticed you had to hold yours from spinning too... I get mine on like halfway, where its easier to hold on to... than I put the belt back on to help hold it for the final half...

    • @DEInTheGarage

      My father taught me two things about tools at a young age which I have kept with me ever since. 1. buy good tools, take care of them, and you will have them forever, and 2. No one will care for your tools the way you would.
      For these reason I avoid tool lending whenever possible. I clean things before I put them away, carefully wind up cords, a try to use things properly to keep them in operable condition. I have been burned too many times lending tools out.
      My dad is into wood working and not cars, but he still has all the tools he purchased when he was 20-years-old starting out. Same chop saw, drill press, table saw... even has the same damn hammer! Most of his tools are older than I am and out preform the new stuff I have.

Long story short, bought a line wrench set and new deep well sockets from Harbor Freight . Bingo! got it off. New pump and pulley. Pulley was actually easy to grunt on with wrenches. • @lamegame420
      @lamegame420 3 роки тому +2

      His pulley has holes in it for intallation of the pump. Most applications you have to install the pulley after the pump is intalled.

  • @tv10morehead
    @tv10morehead 3 роки тому +1

    BELT SQUEAK TIP !!! Thanks for that one, BUT the low pressure tank output is on the back of many of these and they're very weak so don't even think of prying or pushing hard to get the hose off or even to push it back on, if you hear a crack or pop from the tank, it is ruined . There's plastic epoxy you can use with fiberglass screen to make it stronger or cobble it but it has to be clean of fluid to stick, ( might void warranty but you can goop it up first to make it stronger in the first place ? ) SO before a install carefully push the rubber hose back on the tank and then place the pump with pulley loosely on the mount. Working around that rubber hose at all do not pull pry or crack that or it is a bad day. The fix for this defective engineering is to go to a external metal reservoir and that means removing the air box to mount it with hoses long enough to reach the pump. phew. A metal or thicker OEM or aftermarket tank solution is probably out there somewhere... a metal pulley would also be nice since a slight ding with a ratchet is all that's needed to chip the lip of those fiber composite pulleys yikes !!!

    Another thing that works if the pump is on the truck, and it’s cold out. Warm up the pulley in a bowl of hot water so the center ring expands just a touch, so that the cold shaft, which shrank, should go on with out issues so long as you deb it with grease. After that pulley cools it will be on there for good lol

    Never seen the wrench in the vice technique. Pretty sure my grandpa that taught me to work on semis/anything with a motor, would yell at me saying what the fuck is the wrench in the vice for. Going to make the wrench bend a little and you can't use a damn breaker bar or anything else to get more leverage. I'd definitely be getting dumb fucked by my family if they seen me do that move. But whatever works. I just have old people over my shoulder that do things their way
