Drywall & Lime Plaster In our Straw Bale House | Part 1

  • In this video we finished plastering the bedroom right when you first walk in to our house to the right. Next up we are working on the West and East bedrooms in our loft. We first have to get drywall hung on the walls and ceilings that meet the straw bales and then we are ready to plaster. We got the west room all done; however, we did have fairly deep cracks all over.. Our mixture was a lot wetter than our previous batches ever were so this must have caused too much shrinkage resulting in the cracks. The east room is all prepped (drywall hung, outlets/windows taped) now and ready for plaster! Thank you all for watching and we hope you find our videos to be helpful for those of you looking to build a straw bale house in the near future! Please share, like, and subscribe to our channel!

Appreciate a good, hardworking family. We have lived in our house almost 50 years now (and it was 30 years old when we bought it), No vapor barrier. we are fine.

Wish I could have borrowed you my rock lift to use. My back was hurting just watching you hang without a lift! 😥

You are right about old homes and no vapor barrier behind the lath and plaster. I have seen that myself. Good luck to you two. I really enjoy your videos!

You guys are awesome, but Wylee, you shaving has given my wife all kinds of crazy ideas that I too should shave off my beard. Thanks Bro. Your progress is impressive and it's easy to see how your plastering skills are improving with each wall. Looking forward to the next installment.

i hope you're fine without the moisture barrier ... considering the same for my straw bale building, but haven't done much of the research yet. From what i understand the wool will do a good job of breathing the moisture out of the ceiling and the straw bales with lime/plaster finish will breathe as well. i am for sure going up with the foundation on piers with a moisture barrier on the floor ... living in NE Ohio can be damp in the winter/spring. good luck.

I grew up in a Timber foundation house that was built by a couple for their retirement... The house was so tight that we had to actually remove the vapor barrier because the Ceiling was sagging from the Internal humidity not being able to get out.

How the building envelope works. Would like yo do this in a humid area in the south and a little scared because black mold can be a real problem.

Everyone has their own opinion... For traditional houses.😂
But you are building a non-traditional home. Your house will need to breath because you are using a plaster that takes a long time to dry. No vapor barrier just means you are not "air sealed". You won't meet the standards for a passive house without, but hey it just means you need a bigger heat source in the winter and bigger ACs in the summer. Screw the standards and ney sayers... I don't see them building a strawbale home, nor do they have to live in it.
