  • It has been a while since our last video and have since moved in! We are doing well; we just took time off away from the computer and camera while working on outside projects as well as small projects inside. This video is showing the larger projects that were completed before moving in, such as refinishing the earthen floors and staircase, painting the island, adding shelves into the pantry and waxing the rebar. The appliances and bathroom vanities are all in as well! While there are still a few more projects left to finish in the house, it was time to finally get in there! We will be posting a walk-through of the finished house in the near future as well as another time lapse so keep your eye out for them! Hope you enjoy this video, as always thanks for watching!

    Quite possibly the most wholesome family based building project ever on UA-cam. I'm so glad this turned out well. Not surprised, just glad.

    I cannot believe you didn’t end up with 10x the subscribers. Your dedication & perseverance to all the build processes was admirable. You are truly craftsman. And fun parents as well. How’s the house feel going into winter? Best wishes, peace.

      aww, thank you! Honestly, I feel I didn't give it my best shot towards making better videos/editing/and trying to get our videos out there. We were so consumed with building, husband working full time, our small business, homeschooling, learning the science and steps along the way, and taking care of the kids that it was the least priority at the time. I appreciate the kind words 🧡

      winter with below zero temps are still a bit chilly.. I do wish we used WHEAT straw bales. I think these flax bales are allowing too much air to pass so we do feel a little cool air through the walls. but overall, it is sounds and warm.

    Would love to hear how the home has performed in this extreme winter weather we’ve had this winter. Miss seeing your videos. I was almost sad to see that you were finished and I didn’t get to watch y’all anymore. Your family is so great to watch. I loved the extended family camaraderie and the way they all came together to help you through this process. Not something we see much in this day and age.

      thank you for your words. I personally believe it would perform better if the bales were made from wheat instead of flax. There is too much air in the flax bales so the house is a little colder than one would expect. BUT the floor heat has been amazing and keeping us much much warmer than where we were before the build.

    Our child just bought a straw home, one of only 225 ever built in our state. How has yours performed so far ? Have you saved money in heating and cooling bills ? What are issues she needs to be on the lookout for.? Your house is quite beautiful, I love the staircase.

      its been performing well. We do not know how efficient it is the winter just yet, but during the summer it was great. There is no AC in the house, and only had a few windows open at nights and the house stayed between 70-76 even during 100 degree days. It was humid during the nonstop days of rain though. She shouldn't need to be on the 'lookout' for anything different than a typical house. thank you!

    How long and wide is your living/dining/kitchen area? I have started construction on our attached barn and am about to start building our house now and your house looks so identical to our floorplan that I'm screenshoting multiple times to show my husband what my drawings will look like in real life. (I'm referring to the living, dining, kitchen area with the balcony up top with the doors. We have 4 kids too so we decided to give them their own tiny bedrooms across the top, so 4 doors) seeing your UA-cam thumbnail was a holy crap moment. It was seeing what was in my head and sketchbook in real life, but I really am interested to know your dimensions. Yours may be almost the same or maybe a tiny bit more narrow and it would be nice to know the numbers to ask my husband what he thinks about size now that he can see it in a real structure. Thanks in advance!

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  Рік тому +1

      Haha that's awesome!! The main Floor exterior dimensions are 36x45... the area you asked about from south wall of windows to the post and then the entire length is 16'x42' (interior dimensions)..hope that helps!

    Hello, I just started checking out your vids, I have a question. Were you able to get a build loan for this house or had to pay as you built? We are at the property purchase stage now and looking at barndominiums as an option. These haybale builds have been on my mind for at least 10 years though. If nothing else I will build my garage/shop like this or shipping containers. Possibly a mix of both.

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  2 роки тому +1

      we did not look into a build loan. we paid as we could, and got a small personal loan just to help us through so we didn't feel stressed about money. best of luck on your upcoming projects!

      we had a few hailstorms, and during one of the storms the pea sized hail actually indented into the stucco! there are also a couple cracks along corners that we should probably address, otherwise it appears to be holding up well.
