Oiling the Earthen Floor Part 3 | Straw Bale House Build

  • After allowing the floors to dry thoroughly and getting our range hood installed (previous video), we were ready to oil the floors! This is the last (and a crucial) step to earthen floors. We used healthy linseed oil from Tried and True that we mixed with 100% natural citrus solvent to thin the oil. We started with the perimeter then the remaining areas. We did 4 coats total, each one right after the other. We do plan to do another coat or two before we move into the house to give it one final 'seal'. Thanks again for watching our channel!

    I’d seen someplace about applying coats of oil to an earthen floor: Once a day for a week, Once a week for a month, Once a month for a year, and Once a Year for life. I can’t wait to get to this stage in our house construction!

    I love how you’re including your kids in the construction of your home. Instilling great memories and a sense of accomplishment and competence that comes from learning skills in childhood. 💕

    "Gutsy" move, I guess in essence you made clay tile. You could have imported Mexican dirt for about $2.50 a sq. tile, instead you made your own rectangular pieces of clay for half the price/ so-to-speak. That is very cool, and so is your home and family. God bless each and every one.

    Sure looks durable, warm, and natural. Just like your family. Kids will remember the awesomeness. Oh, btw, some of my family is 4th generation at the same house, 5th on the same property. You know, you started a legacy.

    Two words “broom handle”. Less bending over and on your knees. I could not have refinished floors without a boom handle on the roller. And just spray it!!

    I think I would have found a special place to capture some footprints in the floor. Just saying.

    Loving your floors!! Just curious how it cleans- and how does it hold up? Does it chip? Scratch? 5 kiddos here 😅

      We have very very hard water so water spots are always showing on the floors even after mopping it seems. But lf you can get a smoother finish than us, that would help. Scratches? Yes, the dogs leave scratches (especially when chasing after the cats 🙄🫣) but they seem to buffer out. The chair legs are the worst with the floors. Need good chair pads otherwise they mark the floors often. I was making Coconut milk that was steaming hot and spilled about 4 cups on the floor - you can see exactly where that happened and it looks very 'dirty'. I need to reoil that area. Overall I love the grounding, earthiness of the floors but I think they would bother many people because it isn't as easy to keep them looking clean. Hope that helps!

      every region will vary depending on the clay/sand content in your soil. we did roughly 3parts soil to 1 part sand, and added straw as we went.. it is has held up really well thus far! but again, you will need to do sample batches starting with small pour samples then once you have a better idea of your ratio, pour those in a bigger sample (3X3' would be good) - this will show you how your mix holds up to a larger surface area. i definitely recommend working to achieve a smoother surface area (between trowel and burnishing) than what we did, it makes it harder to sweep! best of luck!

    How many gallons of danish oil and citrus solvent. Can you show pictures what it looks like after it dries.

      the video at the end is of after it has dried. but the dust and dirt from kids/country life/construction is another story 🤣.. so now it looks a little lighter, you will be able to see this in our next videos coming up. I believe it was 16 gallons of oil and 4 gallons of solvent. i mentioned in the video how much oil was used I just can't recall for sure right now. Thanks for watching!

      We used 8 gallons of linseed oil on our 600 square feet of earthen floor, so pretty similar usage. Our texture probably made it use a little more.

    Will it lighten up after it dries.

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  2 роки тому +1

      not too much but the dust and dirt has really 'lightened' it up now 🤣
