Earthen Floor Part 2 | Straw Bale House Build

  • In this video we laid our second coat of earthen floor which also happens to be our final layer. We have 2-3" of concrete as our sub floor, we then poured around 1" of earthen mix on top of the concrete, and for our final coat we went with a 1/2" thickness of earthen materials. We had a few set backs along the way during this process which was a huge bummer for us but a person just has to go with the flow and trust that it will all work out. We will be posting our next video of oiling the floor so stay tuned!

    Hey guys. I have watched your entire build. My wife and I are 66 and planning to build a Strawbale here in Kentucky (with help). I am not your grandpa, we are not associates or acquaintances. In fact we have never met. But I really feel compelled to say "I Am Proud Of You". You not only have accomplished a home build but have in an awesome way, Educated a New Generation to the importance of sustainability and hard work. And you both are still young. WOW!!! I so admire all of your efforts and only hope that I may be able to inspire others to Strawbale Construction as your Family has inspired me. It's all Very Beautiful. Well Done. My Very Best Regards!!!

      that means A lot- thank you:) I am amazed at how many locals (whom I never thought would care about sustainability/earth homes) are inspired and intrigued at having an "alternative" style of house. "Educating a new generation" is a great way to put it - this motivates me to keep getting videos out there, thank you!

    You two are amazing. Keeping your cool under adverse conditions and realizing that getting mad is not the answer. I wish I had been so wise at your age. Strong stock. Rock on! 👍🏻

      O we get mad or atleast I do, but at the end of it, there’s a job to get done and have to move past the madness. It’s one of my biggest downfalls. 😞 thank you for watching

    When using a mortar mixer they don’t like to mix dry materials. You need to start with 3/4 of all your water for the batch as the first thing in the mixer.
    Dry materials added can quickly change to a solid mass when there isn’t enough water and break the gears easily.
    Water is the key.
    Alternatively, a vertical mortar mixer can mix dry materials easily. Blending your agragates, dirt, sand, and clay dry is a benefit of the vertical mixer, then add water until you reach your desired hydration.

    We ate building a vertical log cabin. Primitive style. Planning to do a dirt floor and linseed oil as well. I studied some on it the way the Navahos done their floors. The Morton mixer and trowel seems like a good plan. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Wow! It is looking great! I love the character/texture that the burnished trowel marks leave. Such hard work and soo worth it. Thanks for sharing

    You could use a power trowel to burnish if you feel like fewer trowel marks would be better. It looks awesome the way it is though. Great job!

    Was this dirt floor put on top of a concrete slab? If so, why did you choose this? If not, what was underneath the floor?

    What ingredients are in the floor materials, and what were the rations? It's not COB persay is it? I don't see any straw in the mix. Is it just clay and sand? Mix of clay and concrete? Thanks for any insights!

    Was wondering if a screed and a bull float would be of use in this technique? Or how about a power trowel to burnish the floor? Did you do this for upper floors?

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  2 роки тому

      yes both those ideas would have been a GREAT idea! no, I didn't want to take this challenge on a second floor. we went with cork flooring

    How many coats are you putting on and what is your mix.

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  2 роки тому +1

      we used clay soil, sand, straw, and water. our ratios will differ greatly from others due to the variations of clay in your soil, moisture levels and so on.
