Finishing our shower walls with sealed lime plaster | Straw Bale House Build

  • We have two shower surrounds that need to be finished with our polished/sealed plaster method. We did the best we could with what we had, we learned a lot and also had a few errors along the way. I love how the first shower turned out but the second one is another story. We know it doesn't look very good, but it is what it is now and at least we can somewhat 'hide' it with a shower curtain 🤣. Thanks for watching!

    I think it looks great! Finding the right process is tricky and as you did, give it your best and see what the results are.

    I'm just beginning to learn but I've heard the shower is one of the biggest dangers to straw bale builds.
    Ty for the videos! Amazing!

    The swirl technique you attempted on the blue is achieved by putting both colors on your trowel at once. Mostly white, with a little blue. Then trowel on. So every time you go back for more product you put both colors on.

    This is awesome! My wife and I hope to do something similar some day! This will be a great blue-print! You guys should get in touch with Matt Risinger from The Build Show and talk about permitting, ideation, cost, and execution. I'm sure you'd get a lot of exposure and opportunities to educate/teach these methods!

    Another great personality is Corbin Lundsford from the Building Performance Workshop. I think your natural builidng methods compiled with the science/health of building this way would go a long way with him!

    Wanting to do concrete curb less shower, linear drain at the threshold so I don’t have to do any door. Plus concrete walls, and concrete floor in the bathroom. Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing.

    Good job! Great demeanors, too! Forgive me if I missed it but I assume you did the seams with a fiberglass mesh tape set in thin set mortar. Is that correct? At any rate, I'm wondering how it is all holding up. Any issues?

      to be honest, while it has held up ok, I know that our recipe is not worth using. I would do as much research as possible on tadelakt and polished lime plasters and go from there. best of luck and sorry I am not any help!

      Tadelakt
      The true method is incredibly labor intensive and uses tiny high polish stones of a certain hardness rating to punish the plaster to a high shine and close the pores. It's beautiful.😊 But i love these showers and it's a great job for a diy!

    Does it matter what kind of soap you use? I remember reading one construction magazine about the same method. But it didn't state anything about it being specifically olive soap.

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  Рік тому

      Black olive soap I believe is the true method, I have read others mention either olive or coconut oil soap works well

    I want to do this but how does your shower handle mold

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  7 місяців тому

      it seems to be holding up very well although where the tub and plaster meet it does have cracks so I am still unsure if this will become a problem in the future

    • @TheEnigmaticmuse
      @TheEnigmaticmuse 6 місяців тому +1

      The lime is alkaline so mold should not grow on it.

    • @TheEnigmaticmuse
      @TheEnigmaticmuse 6 місяців тому

      @@buildingroots5873when tiling a tub, caulk should be used in those areas because weight from water and people causes those to flex so any hard material will crack. So I would caulk the corners and the parts near the tub.
