"Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" is another epic song by Porcupine Tree. Like "Anesthetize", the live version is amazing.
Thank you for watching and for the recommendation! I'll definitely be sure to add that one to the roster.
not, overrated
@@JonathonThamesMusic Yes. Seriously. Wayne is absolutely correct. Arriving Somewhere will blow your mind apart. Seriously.
Yes. This.
I love watching people "discover" Gavin Harrison for the first time. He's absolutely epic. His ghost notes are beyond explanation. The way he uses the cymbals is without comparison. I love how you commented that the drum fills were tasty. They are exquisite.
This song simply raises the bar to the stars.
Steven Wilson is a living God! Gavin Harrison is a Monster!
As someone said at a PT concert: "He's got the most crisp drumming of all"
absolutely
Porcupine Tree should be heralded as one of the best bands to ever exist. Wilson is just a savant in every sense of the word. Many people don’t even realize what a big role he played in writing and producing the majority of the Opeth albums.
The fill coming out of the really heavy section (about 13:00) when he comes back up the Tom’s to lead into the chorus is the most tasteful fill I think I’ve ever heard
PT The Best Band that a Lot of People Never Heard Of!
The best live performance of all time dare I say.. Steven Wilson is a genius. Gavin Harrison is from another planet.
My reaction to this band was much like yours. Deep rabbit hole. Worth the deep dive! Cheers
One of my favorite live performances ever, so thight and that drumming and fills, from another planet, i play this at least once a week, im a big prog rock/metal fan and PT is on my top 10 list, great reaction and comments👏
This song is so fantastic, it makes me cry
Gavin Harrison is probably the current drummer that best combines chops and tastefulness.
Porcupine Tree is a band to whom you can react using their live vids, as they are so tight that they sound just as good live as they do in the studio. You really can't pick a weak track in the "Live in Chicago", "Live in Tilburg", or "Octane Twisted" concerts. Just to call out a few, try "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here", "Hatesong", and "Fear of a Blank Planet".
Gavin Harrison is a fantastic drummer, awesome control, and leads the band in large parts of this song
I’ve found few music reactors with genuine emotions and excitement like yours! So fun to watch you enjoy such a masterpiece.
Welcome to the rabbit whole. Everything Steven Wilson touches is gold......
Steven has remixed the King Crimson discography, as well as Yes , Black Sabbath, XTC , Tears For Fears, and has produced Opeth ,and Anathema.
His solo work and side projects are top notch.
Gentle Giant and Chicago....
Definitely dive into this rabbit hole! Suggestions:
Hatesong live in Chicago
Cheating the Polygraph live in Tilburg
Heart Attack in a Layby live in Chicago
Bonnie the Cat
Sound of Muzak
Way Out of Here live in Tilburg
Harridan
Cheers!
Thank you for the recommendations! I'll add them to the roster and look forward to checking them out!
Great reaction! Welcome to the Steven Wilson / Porcupine Tree rabbithole. Please check out Steven Wilsons solo work. For example "Home Invasion / Regret #9" (studio version) with Guthrie Govan playing one of the best guitar solos of all times. Greetings from Germany.
You should react to Cheating the Polygraph to be really amazed by this drummer with this band. Same concert. Loved this reaction thoroughly! Best one on this song I've seen yet. Edit: Cheating the Polygraph also is one of their best songs imho. Much underappreciated.
Thank you so much for watching, for the recommendation, and for the kind words! I'll be sure to tack that one onto the list!
I got into this band and Steven Wilson's work in general only 5 years ago. From then on he hooked me and wouldn't let go. I really listen to a lot of music from ABBA to SOAD, but I come back to Porcupine Tree the most. Nice reaction!
Thank you for watching! I'm with you there, I like stuff all across the spectrum -- good music is good music!
@@JonathonThamesMusic It was a pleasure
Exactly! I would recommend something by P.T. or S.W. but I think you will have enough here for now. I recommend Momma Sed by Puscifer. The studio version from the movie V is for Verstile. If you haven't tried yet. It is divine! ua-cam.com/video/6piWIjfW1QI/v-deo.html&ab_channel=pusciferdotcom
I have your same reaction and I've heard it a hundred times. Just brilliant!
At 12:42 when Gavin goes nuts, that is one of my eight year old sons favorites parts in any song.
Welcome to my top 10 songs ever heard.
I attended every porcupine tree concert in nyc from 1999- 2022. Great band
Best reaction to this masterpiece by far!
Thank you so much!
Ive met Steven on a couple of occasions and this version of Anaethetize Live from Tilburg is fantastic 😀
3:13 look at his sly smile, he knows its goood.
Welcome to the world of "Porcupine Tree"
Surely one of the best prog epics! Insane musicianship all round the board, but the drums are definitely something else! Indeed a nice blend of Tool, Marillion, Dream Theater and Opeth.
Would love to see your reaction to Fear of a Blank Planet.
Gavin joined King Crimson after P. Tree first disbanded in 2008 or so. He's been with Crimson up until PT reformed last year.
Keyboardist Richard Barbieri was in the Legendary early 80's New Romantic Masters, JAPAN
Oh wow, then I actually got to see him play with Crimson! I had the amazing opportunity to catch them live back in Septembet of 2019, and there were two other drummers performing alongside Pat Masteletto - it was fantastic; I had no idea it was this dude, but it makes total sense!
@@JonathonThamesMusic yep... The other drummer was Jeremy Stacey I think, and before that was Bill Reiflin of Ministry ( RIP )
@@JonathonThamesMusic check out " Ghosts" by JAPAN. Barbieri was/is the master of atmospherics. Not a technical player, but for mood, I put him above Tangerine Dream, Eno, etc... Easily.
You left out The Pineapple Thief, Bruce Sword's band whom Gavin did a couple of albums and tours with!
Welcome to the world of Porcupine Tree. Greetings from Spain (if you keep listening to their songs you will love them for sure)
What a wonderful reaction! Porcupine Tree touches my heart, I'm from Argentina and made 1.500km by car to see them live in Chile, worth the long trip. Since I've discovered Gavin Harrison my approach to drums is completely different, he's got a Drumeo masterclass on youtube where he shares his point of view when it comes to composing drum parts and it's amazing how he communicates it.
Subbed for more Porcupine Tree, if you want to see Gavin on it's top performance (which is always haha) check out Way out of Here or Cheating The Polygraph from this Live set.
When I find out people who don't know PT I have an urge to push them down a rabbit hole that would take them MONTHS to get out of
Kudos to Rick!❤❤❤
Check out" dark matter" live, same concert. Your reaction was awesome. Awesome! I've watched many reactions with this specific song, and yours, by far, was my favorite. I had fun watching you have fun!
Thank you so much for the really kind words and for the recommendation! I'll add that one to the roster and look forward to checking it out soon!
Best Band ever and Steve Wilson is phenomenal. loved all over the world. Even his own music as a solo artist is superb.
Where is the more porcupine tree we were promised JON!!!! Jokes aside, this was amazing to rewatch :)
hahaha! What a beautiful reaction! Your energy dude is insane!!! Watching your reaction was an awesome journey! 🤘
Thank you so much for checking it out and for your extremely kind words!!
Great reaction! Subscribed for more Porcupine Tree. And maybe some Tool. And alter bridge 🤘.
Thank you for watching and subscribing! I'm definitely going to be checking out more PT. Also, I'm a big fan of both TOOL (my favorite band) and Alter Bridge, so I'm familiar with the majority of their catalogs (in TOOL's case, their entire catalog), but I'd still be happy to do videos breaking down my appreciation of the tunes I'm familiar with in real time, and of course (in Alter Bridge's case), I'd be more than happy to check out any tunes I haven't yet heard. For Alter Bridge, the last album I bought and listened to was The Last Hero, so anything since then I've yet to hear. Just let me know what songs you'd like to see featured, and I'll put them on my list.
I loved your reaction bro 🤘 I’m a new subscriber now.
PT as a whole are amazing, but individually they are all amazing musicians in there own right.
Anything Steve Wilson does is awesome. Great music, and writing...always has done some of the most original writing I'm modern music. And remember..... Play it LOUD
Love the reaction!
Great song from an amazing album. You re reaction is great.
Thank you so much for checking it out!
Steven Wilson attended the first Marillion concert.
Nothing about what this band has achieved, any longer surprises me. They’re just ‘ remarkable ‘ in every phase. I’ve been into their unique, dynamic style for 23 years now when I first heard the song
“ Dark Matter “ from their “ Signify “ album. And yeah, they’re also a great live band. I believe these guys were the most overlooked band coming out of the 90s. Can’t say enough about PT.
Yes, more porcupine tree live please
Check out their song called The Hate Song live. CRAZY good and the drummer shows his stuff!
Wilson is a prog rock god, his writing, composing and production and engineering abilities are exemplary. He downplays his abilities as a musician. Barbieri, on keyboards…the best ever since Rick Wright, at creating “atmosphere”, and a feeling through a song. Harrison on drums… an absolute beast! One of the finest drummers in Rock, without doubt. His ability to switch, time signatures effortlessly and, be accurate and create fills…wow.
Add an ensemble cast of equally talented musicians that “get” the vibe and PT is an absolutely underrated powerhouse of prog rock.
Great reaction! Ever listened to Opeth? Steven Wilson from Porcupine tree have produced some of their albums. Would love a reaction to Hessian Peel by Opeth.
You literally express everything I want to. Keep what you're doing !!!!!!!!
warms my heart to see another appreciate a musical masterpiece like, so much!
welcome to the genius of Steve Wilson and Porcupine Tree..... Steve Wilson was not coincidently involved in my favorite albums from another one of my favorite bands,Opeth. pair him with Mikael Akerfeldt and you have musical gold.
12:51 The Face i make when i have a hard time on the toilette. Btw. loved your video.
Mate, that’s probably the most intense and coolest reaction video ever.
I felt like exactly the same when watching this gem the first time. It blowed and still blows me away!
This was much fun, thank you ❤
Jon, I love how you expressed how most of us felt the first time listening to the song. You not only feel music but understand it. Where are you out of?
Thank you so much for the kind words, Randy! Greetings from FL!
Nice reaction! I’d recommend their “Anesthetize” Blu-ray. Their new album also came out somewhat recently and it’s great!
Love your vibe! This is one of my fav songs ever.
You’re right…there are moments in the outro that sounds a bit like Marillion. Steven Wilson has been involved with Marillion several times and remixed some of their albums.
some very cool drums and melodic craziness!
PORK-EHh-PINE! 1:28
Love this band! You should listen to more of their stuff, I wont recommend anything specific its all really good to me grab any album and go for a ride
18:17 You noticed as well. 👍A bit of Marrilion like transitions and chords.
You can also hear ‘Marillion’ vibes in their song: The Start Of Something Beautiful (After 4.45 minutes in the song)
check out Arriving somewhere but not here. song Makes my eyes tear!
By far the best and most appropriate reaction to this song I've ever seen
Surprising you know Dream Theater and not Porcupine Tree. Between PT and Steven Wilson solo efforts, you have hundreds of hours of amazing music ahead of you!
There’s no compharrison!
Check out What Happens Now live!
Gavin Harrisons drumming is a Masterpiece in itself. Maybe, only a drummer can catch all he is doing?
Oh and I recommend the album “ The Sky Moves Sideways. “ An absolute epic journey !
I love this reaction. You will love the journey of Gavin Harrison (the drummer) and this band. Also Gavin plays in Pineapple Thief. i Recommend "White mist" which is my top 3 tracks.
One of my husband’s favourite bands
He has great taste.
Welcome to the genius of Steven Wilson Jon. But first up - what a fabulous, enthusiastic but so pleasantly knowledgeable and insightful reaction! So fantastic to see someone so able to articulate the absolute genius of not just SW, but Porcupine Tree as an ensemble. Loved you loving it! I was about to rattle off any number of suggestions but I see many of them below already listed. Let me just then suggest one golden rule that I cant see anyone else has mentioned yet. Anything Steven Wilson is perfection in the studio, but just mind-blowing live. If you can find a live clip of anything of Porcupine or Steven Wilson - react to that. I promise you you have just entered a world of gobsmacking enjoyment.
One last suggestion I didnt see listed below is Strip the Soul / Dot Three live ua-cam.com/video/sBQnDNhq8Lg/v-deo.html
But as so many others have suggested, judging by how much you loved Anesthetize, I would go with Arriving Somewhere but Not Here live next....
Prepare to be mind-blown....
Drummer is Gavin Harrison
Check out Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Open Car, A Smart Kid, Lazarus, Start of Something Beautiful, Blackest Eyes
PT and SW are something special. Wait until you get a load of Marco Minnemann, Guthrie Govan, and Adam Holzman. Jeez, hope you're not too busy for the next few years, as Wilson's catalog and body of work imprint themselves on your grey matter. It's almost all just about as good as Anesthetize too, some of it maybe even a little better. Enjoy the trip! Nice reaction, thanks for posting
Check out Steven Wilson's ( front man of Porcupine Tree) solo stuff Luminol live in Mexico . Flutes drumming crazy drumming. UNIQUE!
In Porcupine Tree, imo two of the best musical minds in the genre, in Steven Wilson and Richard Barbieri(his soundscapes are just so, so, so fkn perfect), are combined with the sheer force of the most perfect drummer existing in Gavin Harrison... Add a really humble, laid-back but exceptionally tasty bassist to the mix, and out comes a merge that excedes every band that ever existed. But that's just my opinion xD
Not just yours!
Best reaction video I've seen, Thanks for not stopping every 8 seconds like most other reaction videos! Kudos to you Sir!
You should listen to Hatesong. Gavin is a monster on the drums.
Somebody suggest Ayreon “the day the world breaks down”
John Wesley the guitarist is the guitarist from Marillion lol
Looks like Pete Trewavas Marillions bassist...but it isn't.
You should react to Leprous performing Slave live at Rockefeller Music Hall.
Gavin Harrison is just not human!
Drummer Gavin Harrison is from another planet. If you want to see him (and frankly, the other guys) show off, you really need to check out Hatesong live:
ua-cam.com/video/O5nAA_QXBPY/v-deo.html
"The Start of Something Beautiful" is amazing. Gavin Harrison is the best drummer in the world & Steven Wilson is the major genius of our generation. My Opinion. Regards from Mexico.
Gavin Harrison is God! Watch his drum clinic play through of this, so damn good.
Definitely look at the songs blackest eyes, arriving somewhere but not here, dead wing.
Well I followed your reaction vids around to here, another favorite that many might not even have heard about. I see some more over to the right that I'll dig into sometime. Since you are the only one doing hour long plus reaction segments (to those subjects worthy of the attention) I suggest (don't they all) another candidate for "best musical composition in the world" after or besides the Lamb and that would be Quadrophenia. Or better yet, do just the drum track by itself, and say Wow.
Hello Jonathon. Quel plaisir de voir que tu aimes à ce point PORCUPINE TREE ! Si tu as l'occasion écoute le dernier, Closure_Contination, excellent. Et puis aussi THE PINEAPPLE THIEF, Versions Of The Truth, avec le même batteur, le maître à tous : Gavin Harrison.
Steven is God!
Gavin Harrison is a genius musician drummer ...I insist on the musician part smart and tight
Gavin Harrison is the best drummer out there. You may want to check out the live video of Dark Matter by these guys - but you can’t go wrong with anything they do.
What do you think about Haken?
I'm not familiar with Haken. Should I check them out?
It cracks me up, the rather naivete that reaction people get away with. It's Gavin Harrison, dude. I'm beginning to think I'll do experienced reactions. I can tell you all about what makes Gavin and Steven and all the musicians great. Well not exactly but you really can't quantify or explain genius, right? But, like, Gavin on triplet changes and bass pedal, come on!
