Thank you for checking this out man, been one of my favourite tracks since listening to it first. An absolute beast, has a segment that caters to almost every mood.

Also you’re spot on with your analysis at the end, the song does feel like multiple chapters. 100% not for everyone being 17 minutes long and this was a completely biased request from me being one of my favourite tracks but it’s just such a masterpiece(in my opinion) I had to share! I’ve always said it’s one of the only tracks that can simultaneously put me to sleep(in the best possible way) and get me so hyped at the same time, lol. Anyways..should probably go to sleep it’s 3am in Ireland and you’ve just kept me up way longer than planned🤣

I love that you reacted to this evnthough PT might not be your style. At least you're honest about that, and I get it, some people just want a little more 'oompf' in music. For me however, this kind of progrock will probably always remain my absolute favorite. I love progmetal like Periphery, TesseracT and Leprous, but music like Porcupine Tree, Riverside and Pineapple Thief will always be my fundament, my heart, my soul. Also, you had some pretty accurate insights. Richard Barbieri, the keyboard player, might be one of the most atmosphere-focussed keyboard players I've ever heard, and it's awesome. Gavin Harrison, the drummer, is imo the best drummer alive atm. Anyway, thanks fo reacting to my favorite song ever man!

Yep- Il like various types of music, including some of metal, but PT is right down my musical alley. Like all original bands, they are very difficult to categorize. Since music is emotions set to sound, there is a limit to how much we can categorize and analyze it.
This drummer is by quite a long shot the best drummer I've ever heard. He's just.... something else. And that's saying a lot because of all the amazing drummers in the prog metal/metalcore world. Every single little fill and ghost note he does is nothing short of perfect. This performance is like the single best drum thing ever
Gavin might be the most musical drummer in the hard rock/metal genre today. Only one that comes close I think, in terms of musicality is Martin Lopez, and Gavin is technically better than him.
@@blppt These are some older names, but Simon Phillips, Steve Smith, and Steve Gadd are all pretty musical drummers.

That one goes a little harder and it's one of my favorite live performances ever with Gavin going completely insane on the drums.
And another notch from that is “mother & child divided” and live of course. I think that is not that well known in the Porcupine tree catalog.
Trains is my favourite track of theirs.

Echoes live in Gdansk is the one that blows me away. Obviously the Pompei version is pretty epic, but I think that one is better IMO.

The drummer Gavin Harrison is currently in a new band as Porcupine Tree is no longer together. His new band is called The Pineapple Thief. They have a song called White Mist, it’s their “Anesthetize” if you will. Probably one of the greatest drum performances I’ve heard in that song. It’s a little shorter, but still is an absolute masterpiece you have to check that one out. Will remind you of Anesthetize guaranteed

I'll admit, it took a while for me to get into Porcupine Tree, but man, once they hit, they just didn't stop hitting! Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson is easily my number one go-to artist, up there with the likes of Trivium, Emperor, and Agalloch, Opeth, Dream Theater, and Periphery. They just have so many great songs like Anesthetize, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, The Sound of Muzak, Start of Something Beautiful, Trains, Hatesong, Piano Lessons, Pure Narcotic, Slave Called Shiver, Glass Arm Shattering, Collapse The Light Into Earth. All of their albums are amazing too, although Deadwing, In Absentia, Lightbulb Sun, and Fear of a Blank Planet are my favorites. All of these great songs and albums, and that's not even considering Steven Wilson's incredible solo work like The Future Bites which releases in January; the hype is real!

I love the keyboards in their music. Adds such wonderful depth and layers to the songs.
I've probably watched/listened to this live version 100 times and I've not gotten tired of it. That 17 minutes flies by every single time. After Porcupine Tree disbanded Steven Wilson went solo and has put out some incredible music on his own. For another incredible live performance I highly recommend Luminol (Live in Mexico City). Different musicians playing with him and every bit as epic. It's more towards prog fusion. Ancestral is another monster of a track from him.
This is my favorite song of theirs. It's an experience especially just listening on a long car ride. Definitely one you need to be in the Right mood for.
If you like unpredictable prog, I would strongly recommend Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down Official Video, to introduce yourself and then anything from their Universe live show is fire.
Gavin Harrison (drummer) & Colin Edwin (bass) are ridiculously talented musicians. But honestly man you just need to watch this entire show (Arriving Somewhere (But Not Here) - Live In Chicago) which won numerous awards for production and sound...which means you really need to watch & listen from the DVD. Also there’s numerous spin off bands from this one to check out. Blackfield & No-Man are two off the top of my head. I saw Porcupine Tree live at The Vic in Chicago on their Occam’s Razor tour. Incredibly good. Something that brought a smile to my face at that show was the incredible age differences/gap in attendance. But a significant amount of the older generation had King Crimson shirts on and the middle aged and younger crowds all had TooL shirts on. Lol...Good stuff.
IMO, there's just a few songs that sound better than the studio version... This is the perfect example. Another song is Words Darker Than Their Wings live at Royal Albert Hall... A masterpiece too!
I love the whole arrangement of the song. Thanks for choosing this one for a reaction. Gavin Harrison the drummer on this track is a total beast agreed there's a video of him doing the middle drum parts for a clinic. It's staggering.
I'm probably a little bias because I think Steven and PT did the best modern take on the Prog from the 70's that I grew up with. Yes and Pink Floyd are key parts of the 70's prog I'm referring too. You might want to listen to Opeth. That was Steven and band, doing prog metal.
If you haven't already sampled it MB - based on what you are saying does it for you - check out Strip the Soul/.3 live by these guys. 2 separate tracks that they join together live. And if you REALLY want to be left wandering what on earth is going on.... track down Hatesong live as well! Enjoy and thanks for your intelligent analysis.

It's fine if you like progressive metal more than this but I enjoy good songwriting and emotion, they have the hard stuff to play like your talking about in like what happens now and the calm stuff like trains, I also enjoy the little details like in chloroform colon plays around with the double bass at the end, there's something for everyone though. The emotional depth, the inventiveness of the writing and the passionate playing style of Steven Wilson. I also really liked the interplay of Wilson and keyboardist Richard Barbieri. It doesn't hurt that a lot of Wilson's obvious influences- Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, the Beatles- are favorite bands of mine.
Another crucial thing about their music is Wilson has an appreciation for the long-playing album format, and clearly structures their albums with great care- and I love a well-planned and executed album.
The visceral depth, soundscapes and texture. Porcupine Tree, for me, seems to be kind of a hybrid, capturing the intensity and layered sound of modern electronic music, but largely performed by real musicians and instruments which give it an additional organic dimension, all in a very thoughtful and provoking way. Porcupine Tree's music is a very visual experience for me, it conjures a lot out of my imagination.

Fuck yeah one of my favorite songs of all time! Porcupine Tree was one of my first prog bands so they hold a special place in my heart. Also the drummer is Gavin Harrison he’s a sick drummer. He recently started playing in a band called The Pineapple Thief they are a Progressive Rock band.

The band Riverside has a similar atmospheric approach as these guys but are just a touch heavier. I recommend their song 'Egoist Hedonist' (Drew if you're reading this you'd dig them as well) 🤘

Try Aussie prog rockers Cog - Anarchy OK. They are huge in Australia but have never caught on overseas like Karnivool have. And I'd assume a lot of Aussie fans, while loving Karnivool, probably regard Cog at the top.
